‘MORE’ TO COME FROM
MOQUETT
by Steve Sherack For trainer Ron Moquett, the path to the 2016 GI KentuckyDerby begins through his own backyard in Monday’s GIII Southwest S. at Oaklawn Park. The 44-year-old native of Arkansas shoots for his secondstraight success in the 1 1/16-miles President’s Day feature withthe lightly raced Whitmore (Pleasantly Perfect), a visuallyimpressive winner of two of his three career trips to the post. “It’s no secret that you always want to show out at home,”Moquett commented. “I may look across the grandstand on anygiven day and see someone that I went to highschool with. Andwhen I say I live near Oaklawn Park, I mean, I can look out mykitchen window and watch the tractors.” Moquett added with a laugh, “When the horses go by in arace, it’s like a scene from Jurassic Park where you can see theripples on a glass of water.” The former employee of conditioner Bernie Flint, on his ownsince 1997, will have more on the line than the standard 10%training commission in the Southwest. Moquett’s SouthernSpring Stables group owns a 50% interest in Whitmore, anexplosive optional claiming winner in his sophomore bow aftergetting pinched at the start with blinkers added in Hot Springsmost recently Jan. 16 (video). SATURDAY SPOTLIGHT ON TAMPA BAYby Ben Massam
With sunny skies and an appearance by reigning champion
female turfer Tepin (Bernstein) topping three graded stakes
events on the schedule,
Tampa Bay Downs is ready
for a day in the limelight
Saturday. Despite a difficult
winter of weather and stout
competition from their
neighbors to the southeast,
the Oldsmar oval continues to
carve out a unique niche in
the racing industry--one that
has proven appealing to top barns wintering in Florida and
horseplayers alike. Cont. p4

ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE FOR PLETCHER RR2It was another successful day at the track for seven-time Eclipse winner
Todd Pletcher. The conditioner had a trio of 3-year-old winners in Florida
Wednesday with Battery (Bernardini), who took a Gulfstream allowance;
FirstHand Report (Blame), winner of a Hallandale maiden special; and
All World (Curlin), who graduated at Tampa Bay Downs and became
Eclipse Thoroughbreds 100th winner.

Robert LaPenta and Harry Rosenblum, also co-owners of last
term’s Southwest hero Far Right (Notional), bought into the
chestnut after he zig-zagged his way home by 7 1/4 lengths in
his Churchill debut Nov. 6 (video). The first foal from the
unraced Scat Daddy mare Melody’s Spirit was acquired privately
by Southern Springs from breeder John Liviakis.
“It’s a way for me to get people invested in our sport and be
able to teach them without having them get overwhelmed in
their first time or two in the
business,” Moquett explained
of his partnerships. “It’s kind
of like training wheels for
owners. You get to see a bill
and go through the process
and get to experience what
it’s like to own a racehorse.”
He continued, “I’ve had
everybody from people that
were burned out of the game
and were wanting to just be associated with it a little bit to
people who later moved on and ended up owning 12 horses of
their own. I do have some friends and family involved and that
kind of stuff, but the group was created with the idea to
introduce or re-involve people in our awesome sport. We’ve
been very fortunate so far.”
In addition to his pair of aforementioned tallies going six
furlongs, the Kentucky-bred Whitmore also finished a
disappointing fifth while making his two-turn bow in the
GIII Delta Downs Jackpot S. Nov. 21. A muddy track and/or quick
turnaround seem like valid excuses for that no-show at 7-1,
right?
“Trainer error--that’s what it was,” Moquett replied. “I always
give the horse credit and I try to deflect the blame. If I had
prepared the horse properly, then he’d be ready for an off track,
two turns, etc. His job is to do what he’s prepared to do, and
obviously he wasn’t prepared.”
He continued, “All the indications are that he’ll relish the
stretch out [in distance]. It’s all about getting him to do what the
rider wants. He’s strong minded, but super athletic, too.
Hopefully, they get along and get a nice trip.” Cont. p4

A year that saw Moquett’s stable register more than a career-
high $2.2 million in earnings--his fourth straight season of having
that number reach seven figures--it was also the operation’s first
representative in the starting gate on the First Saturday in May.
While it was an “honor” to saddle the GI Arkansas Derby runner-
up Far Right to an unplaced finish behind the subsequent Triple
Crown hero American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile), Moquett--
who trained Seek Gold (Touch Gold) to a monumental 91-1
upset in the 2006 GI Stephen Foster H. beneath the Twin Spires-
-wasn’t exactly satisfied with just showing up, either.
“Now that we know how to get there, I want to get there
again,” said Moquett, who has 35 horses in training. “And I want
to have a better showing. Now, it’s all about improving. And I’m
confident we will when we get the chance again.”
With another big effort from Whitmore this weekend,
Moquett may be back in Louisville sooner than he thinks.
Saturday Spotlight on Tampa Bay cont. from p1
Conditioned by Mark Casse to a stellar five-win campaign
capped by a triumph in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile in 2015, Tepin
will be the latest in an
extensive line of high-
profile horses from high-
profile barns to compete
at Tampa Bay Downs.
According to Margo
Flynn, the track’s Vice
President of Marketing
and Publicity, sustained
interest from trainers of
Casse’s caliber make days
like Saturday--with 13 graded stakes winners in the entry box--
all the more special.
“The horsemen appreciate both racing surfaces here, so they
will come and race here,” Flynn observed. “Whether it be on the
dirt--which I feel is a good springboard to go to other tracks if
they’re looking to campaign 3-year-olds on a safe surface--or on
the turf course. [The turf] is second to none, basically.”
In recent years, Tampa Bay Downs has seen more and more
entries coming in from trainers
stabled in South Florida as well as at
Payson Park Thoroughbred Training
Center in Indiantown, which is roughly
four hours from Oldsmar. Citing
trainers such as Christophe Clement
and Bill Mott, who do some of their
best work on the turf, Flynn noted
that Tampa benefits from the fact
that many barns have numerous
horses eligible for similar conditions.
Confronted by massive, overflow field
sizes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale
Beach, the lush turf course at Tampa emerges as an appealing
option for horses of all abilities.
“The trainers separate horses, and we understand that, and
most of those barns have multitudes of horses that fit the same
conditions,” Flynn said. “The turf trainers do try to point their
higher strings here [too], because typically with those races, for
example, there is not a lot of difference between the purse of
the Suwannee River S. [$150,000, GIII, Gulfstream] and the
Endeavour S. [$150,000, GIII, Tampa]--and they are both graded.
We have Tepin coming, so it’s a wonderful tribute to the quality
of the surfaces.”
In addition to out-of-town shippers, Tampa has seen a number
of successful barns opt to stable horses at the track itself. In
addition to names like Ian Wilkes and Jonathan Sheppard on the
grounds, trainer Tom Proctor has established a significant
presence at the track, using a win in last year’s Suncoast S. as a
springboard to Grade I success for Include Betty (Include) later
in the season. Cont. p5

Saturday Spotlight on Tampa Bay cont.
“I think stabling is very competitive down [in South Florida], so
certainly we do get some people who choose to stable up here
during the winter months that have been down there in the
summer,” Flynn continued. “That’s a natural transition, and it
typically has been anyway when Calder would close [and
Gulfstream would open]. But I think stalls are actually a little
more competitive down there in the winter months, so people
have shown interest in coming here and stabling here.”
As the centerpiece of the meet, the GII Tampa Bay Derby has
proven time and time again to be a useful stepping stone to
achievement at the highest level. Street Sense (Street Cry {Ire})
and Super Saver (Maria’s Mon) both competed in the Tampa
Bay Derby en-route to wins in the GI Kentucky Derby, while in
more recent years Todd Pletcher-trained winners Verrazano
(More Than Ready) and Carpe Diem (Giant’s Causeway) went on
to score Grade I wins in their next starts.
“I think that a lot of trainers use [the GII Tampa Bay Derby] as
a moving-on point,” Flynn asserted. “Certainly Todd Pletcher has
been very supportive over the years with bringing horses
through here, and Ian Wilkes--who was connected with Street
Sense--has used it to bring them through as well. Horses have
gone on to have superb careers, whether it be winning the
Kentucky Derby or going on to be solid handicap horses.
[MGISW] General Quarters comes to mind.”
Although Tampa’s product has also seen a notable rise in
interest from horseplayers as well over the last decade, Flynn
said the 2016 season has posed a number of challenges.
Namely, an extraordinarily wet and cold winter has threatened
to halt a prolonged streak of positive or steady handle figures.
“We did show an increase [in handle] last year, but we had
been steady prior to that,” commented Flynn. “Before that, we
were taking large leaps, which has to level out at some point.
We would love to
keep taking large
leaps, but it’s hard to
do. Obviously, the
recession factors into
that as well. We had
the slight increase last
year, and I think we’re
about even right now.
With the weather, it
has obviously not
been good anywhere
in the country, but it’s had a trickle-down effect here. It’s so bad
that the OTB parlors are closed as well. We’ve had a very wet
winter--I believe we’ve had 18 to 20 races off the turf so far,
which is unusual.” Cont. p6

Nevertheless, Flynn said she is confident that Tampa offers
sufficient “mystique” with a wide variety of horsemen from
across the country, creating highly competitive and diverse
wagering opportunities.
“Tampa is very well-received around the country,” she said.
“Obviously, having turf racing in the winter is a plus, and if the
sun is shining here and you’ve got six feet of snow to shovel out
from, it makes [Tampa] appealing. With the field sizes, we try to
make a wagering menu that is competitive and interesting.
People do follow us and look forward to when we open.”
If Tampa is able to maintain a steady stream of interest on an
everyday basis, days like Saturday hammer home the track’s
status as a major player on the winter racing docket. As such,
there is no reason to believe that the small-scale operation on
the Gulf Coast won’t continue to thrive as a destination for both
horsemen and horseplayers.
“It’s a combined effort from everybody, whether it be the
person at the front gate, the person who is taking the $2 wager
or the racing office,” Flynn concluded. “Everyone together works
to make it a go. We try to do that. We’re a relatively small
operation, but we all work multiple jobs and wear multiple hats
to make it all work. Everyone is very proud of having these big
days because it shows off what we have put into it.”

DOMINGUEZ ELIGIBLE FOR HALL OF FAME The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's executive
committee has unanimously approved a measure to make
retired jockey Ramon Dominguez
eligible for Hall of Fame
consideration beginning in 2016.
Dominguez retired in June 2013
after suffering a career-ending
injury at Aqueduct six months
earlier.
Hall of Fame procedures require
jockeys to be licensed in North
America for 20 years in order to be
eligible for consideration, but the
executive committee has the
option of waiving the requirement
at its discretion based on special
circumstances. Jockeys who do not
satisfy the 20-year requirement
must typically wait five years before they become eligible to be
considered for the Hall of Fame.
The requirement was waived in the case of Dominguez, whose
18-year career spanned from 1996 to 2013, because he would
have satisfied the requirement in 2015 and would have been
eligible for Hall of Fame consideration beginning this year if not
for the career-ending injury.
"We appreciate the sensitivity of the executive committee and
Museum director Chris Dragone in responding to his unusual
circumstance," said Edward L. Bowen, chairman of the Hall of
Fame Nominating Committee. "They all recognize that this is an
appropriate use of the discretion given to the executive
committee."
Dominguez won the Eclipse Award for outstanding jockey in
2010, 2011 and 2012 and led all North American riders in
earnings in each of those years. The Venezuelan native set a
single-year record for North American earnings in 2012 with
$25,639,432, which has since been surpassed by fellow Eclipse
winner Javier Castellano.
Dominguez also led all jockeys in wins in 2001 and 2003 and
finished second on seven other occasions. He retired with 4,985
wins from 21,267 mounts and earnings of $191,620,277. He
ranks 17th all time in earnings and 32nd in wins.

Cris Caldwell, a Keeneland auctioneer, blogs about his
experience in Australia.
I head to Australia now, having recently left New Zealand and
the Cleary family at their home in Queenstown. They are the
owners of Blue Sky Farm in Lexington, Kentucky and one of the
families far flung interests is a large
dairy south of Queenstown with a plant
for processing milk, a product that is
one of the countries largest exports.
Bernard and his sister Trina were
celebrating Mohaymen (Tapit)’s win in
the GII Holy Bull S. at Gulfstream Park.
This Tapit colt was sold at Keeneland
for $2.2 million in 2014 to Shadwell
Farm and Sheikh Hamdam. He is now
one of the early Kentucky Derby
favorites and is unbeaten at this point. Their mare is bred to
Tapit, due to foal soon and will, coincidentally, revisit that
Gainesway stallion after foaling.
Landing in Sydney, I headed straight to the Royal Randwick
Racecourse for a lovely day at the races. As the summer festival
kicks into full swing they will have regular weekend crowds of
40,000 plus. Cont. p9

People were very well dressed and many of the ladies wore
hats similar to our Kentucky Derby day or the Breeders Cup. The
track boasts a very well laid out plant filled with constant
commentary between races and interviews of interest both
before and after each post. Very highbrow and very well done.
I was a guest in the Inglis suite and betting was easily
transacted from a machine within each room. Jamie Inglis and I
talked extensively about the auction selling process, noting the
similarities and differences between our countries. Jamie was
most recently at the Keeneland November sale in 2015.
A past Keeneland intern, Louis Le Matayer, had the horse Wolf
Cry entered and he was on the lead until the very end in heavy
going. He imports older horses from France and has a buying
agency in Australasia.
There are four tracks laid out concentrically at Randwick to
minimize overuse and grand views abound in every direction.
There is plenty of outside seating under umbrellas near the rail
to take advantage of the perfect weather.
As soon as the racing concluded Saturday, the Inglis Classic

held in an open air facility with
stadium seating surrounding a large
rubberized walking area. Offices, food
service and repository are in close
proximity.
Over the course of the three-day
event the average was up by 35%,
gross was up by 37% and the
clearance rate was a phenomenal
90%. A very strong auction with many
consignors selling every lot offered.
Top lot was Hip 193, an I Am Invincible colt out of a Red Ransom
mare. The $410,000 price set a new record for the sale.
Mark Webster, the sale manager, stated that many foreign
buyers are now keeping their horses in the country competing
for the largest purses in Australia. He noted that it has taken
years of exchange, dinners shared and a slow building of
confidence before many of these buyers now find it more
engaging to stay and race on this grander scale against other
international race horse owners. Graded wins in Australia
readily increase the world wide value of the horses purchased
and raced as opposed to other smaller jurisdictions.
Some time was spent in and around the town of Scone in the
Hunter Valley. This area is the Lexington, KY of Australia with
over a dozen stud farms. Many of these are owned by
international players with other horse properties positioned
around the world. It is set in a huge, beautiful valley that also
contains over 100 Wineries that produce Semillon and Shiraz
varietals.
I was invited by Wendy Perriam, the resident farm vet for
Arrowfield, on a tour of this large 2,500-acre stud. Standing
more than 10 stallions, including Australian legend Redoute’s
Choice and shuttle stallion Animal Kingdom, this property will
breed over 1200 mares starting in the 2016 season.
A new breeding barn, a mirror image of the current barn, is
being built to process mares with
greater efficiency. Many of these
mares, similar to Lexington, are driven
in and out the same day. New, wide
entry roads are being built now, in the
off season, to facilitate ease of entry
for these numerous four-legged
clients. Other pastures and stallion
turnouts are being built as well.
On Arrowfield there is a separate
sales centre dedicated to yearling
sales preparation. It is a huge
multi-row barn with an in-water
walker, pool, weigh scales and innumerable turnout pastures for
a complete sales prep service. This farm will sales prep close to
200 head for themselves and clients for the Magic Millions, Inglis
and other local venues. As Wendy stated “Never a dull
moment!”
Magic Millions recently concluded its Premier Gold Coast
Yearling sale with the gross up 25%, a top lot at $1,600,000 and
a near 90% clearance rate. Inglis will hold its Premier Easter sale
soon and is building a new, state of the art sales facility outside
of Sydney that will be ready in 2018. Optimism abounds on all
fronts.
Finally, as I return home to the United States from visiting both
New Zealand and Australia, I am struck by how the pursuit of
raising Thoroughbreds, whether broodmares in foal or yearlings
heading to an auction, requires the same effort, the same
quality land and the same physical structures from barns to
fencing, from pastures to breeding sheds, everywhere around
the world. At the end of it all, the horse rules the day and those
specific needs when met, outline the way to create an
environment for success.
The culture, in any given area, may be wildly different but the
horse is the great equalizer and common denominator that
intrinsically designs an environment suitable to creating an
optimal and gorgeous animal that catches the eye and fires the
imagination of people worldwide.

NYRA CUTS DOWN TREES AT SARATOGABy Mike Kane Travelers along Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs this weeksaw an unusual amount of mid-winter activity in the mainparking lot at Saratoga Race Course--33 trees of the 40 treesbeing removed. Cutting 82% of the trees from the lot--all of which were judgedto be at some type of risk-- is part of the New York RacingAssociation=s Backstretch Tree Management Plan. In the secondphase of the program, scheduled to be completed before thestart of the 2016 season in July, four times as many healthy, young trees as the ones taken down will be planted on thegrounds of the historic facility. The removal of the trees from one of the more visible sectionsof the track grounds--where NYRA now stores picnic tablescovered in blue tarps in the off-season--caught the attention ofpassersby, including Saratoga Springs Mayor Joann Yepsen, whodid not know that the project was underway. Saratoga RaceCourse is part of a national historic district in the city. Many Saratogians and racing fans are very protective ofSaratoga Race Course and concerned about changes at thenation=s oldest sporting venue. A year ago, a half-dozen treeswere taken down behind the grandstand to make room for theRed Jacket Hall of Fame building, a pet project of NYRApresident Chris Kay. The trade of the trees, which likely hadbeen part of the Saratoga landscape for a century or more, for astructure to house a newly created hall of fame, was criticizedby many unhappy with decisions being made by Kay and hisadministration. The Backstretch Tree Management Plan has been taking shapefor a few years. In September 2014, the LA Group, a landscapearchitecture and engineering firm in Saratoga Springs, delivereda 43-page document to NYRA that assessed the condition of thetrees on more than 250 acres of the backstretch sections andthe parking lot. The survey identified 22 high-risk trees thatshould be removed immediately. It rated other trees as beingmoderate or low-risk, noted which trees should be pruned andlaid out a planting plan for new trees. The LA Group documentsaid that eight of the high-risk trees were in the parking area. That group consisted of seven Red Maples and one NorwayMaple. NYRA spokesman John Durso said Tuesday that NYRA decidedto remove all the at-risk trees, approximately 10% of the some2,000 trees on the backstretch, the Oklahoma training area, adjacent training barn areas like Sanford Court, and the UnionAvenue parking lot portions of the state-owned property. Whilethe project is part of capital improvements for Saratoga RaceCourse, Durso declined to provide a price tag for the work. AThe New York Racing Association is currently engaged in planting more than 800 new trees that will replace andsupplement the less than 200 trees on the property that were
recommended for removal by a team of expert Saratoga-basedfirms, including a licensed arborist, who identified trees thatwere either dead or posed a viable risk to people and property,@Durso said in a statement. AThis tree management plan has beenshared with the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation, withwhom the New York Racing Association has been in contactduring this process.@ Samantha Bosshart, executive director of the Saratoga SpringsPreservation Foundation, said she was aware that the projectwould begin at some point this winter. She that at present thereis no local oversight to changes being made to state-ownedproperty. AHistoric landscape is an important resource and implementinga tree management plan will insure the long-term preservationof Saratoga Race Course,@ she said.
HOUSE AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE
APPROVES HB 112 The Kentucky House Agriculture Committee unanimouslyapproved HB 112 in an effort to achieve sales tax equity forKentucky=s horse industry. Introduced by Rep. Mike Denham, HB 112 will provide exemption from state sales tax for feed, supplies and equipment used to raise and care for equines, equivalent to the tax policy for other agriculture animals. AOn behalf of Kentucky=s equine economy, I would like toexpress sincere appreciation to members of the Committee forthe strong message of support they sent to Kentucky=s signatureindustry today,@ said Joe Clabes, KEEP=s executive director. AWeowe a debt of gratitude to Rep. Denham and Chairman McKee inparticular for their leadership on this issue.@ Clabes urged members to consider the increased revenue sucha change in tax policy would generate for the state fromincreased equine activity and not just focus on the revenue lostfrom not collecting the tax. AThe Equine Sales Tax Equity Task Force members and theindustry=s grassroots supporters also played an important role inthis process@ added Clabes. AMany of the Committee membersreferenced receiving messages of support for HB 112 from theirconstituents, clearly expressing their support for the horseindustry and unity in their desire see the industry treated fairly.@ Due to it budgetary implications, the bill would need to beapproved by the House Appropriations and RevenueCommittee, before it could advance to the full House for a vote.Unlike the Agriculture Committee, which focuses more onmatters of agriculture policy, the House A&R Committee willlikely place greater emphasis on the fiscal impact of thelegislation.

CAMELOT FILLY OUT INFRONT AT GOFFS
By Emma Berry
A first-crop daughter of the treble Classic winner Camelot (GB)
(lot 160) took top billing during the first day of Goffs=s February
Sale, with Hamish Alexander winning the battle for the Abbeville
and Meadow Court Studs-consigned filly at i80,000.
A half-sister to the German listed winners Skagen (Ger)
(Dashing Blade {GB}) and Scoville (Ger) (Sholokhov {Ire}), her
dam has a clean sheet of winners to runners with five scorers
from her six previous foals.
AShe=s a beauty and she=s been bought for a syndicate who
would like to bring her back here later in the year for the Orby
Sale,@ said Alexander, who also signed for an Acclamation filly at
i20,000 (lot 45) earlier in the session, which was devoted solely
to Flat and National Hunt yearlings.
Eimear Mulhern=s Abbeville & Meadow Court Studs draft
enjoyed a good day and was also responsible for lot 190, a colt
from the final crop of High Chaparral (Ire), who was bought by
Anna and Etienne Drion=s Coulonces Consignment for i54,000.
His unraced dam Zanzibar Girl (Johannesburg) is a
granddaughter of the Kilfrush Stud matriarch Mill Princess and
has had one placed runner to date, the Dermot Weld-trained
3-year-old Whiskey Zulu (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}).
A clearance rate of 63% was indicative of how selective the
market remains for young stock, with 142 of the 224 yearlings
offered being marked as sold. Cont. p2

said, AIt=s lovely to be able to buy into such a good Moyglare

have introduced a bit of speed to the

DBS TO BE RENAMED GOFFS UK Doncaster Bloodstock Sales, known universally as DBS in
recent years, will be renamed Goffs UK nine years after its
merger with Goffs.
Since 2007, Goffs and DBS have integrated a number of areas
including their
auctioneers= panels, client
accounts and Conditions
of Sales. Both entities
report to the Robert J Goff
& Co PLC Board, whose
chairman Eimear Mulhern
said, AThe merger of Goffs
and DBS has proved to be
an enormous success from
day one as the approach
of both companies was always very similar in terms of ethos and
customer service. It is clear to us that our key staff can play a
vital role on both sides of the Irish Sea and we are looking forward
to this new phase of our development with great enthusiasm.@
Henry Beeby, group chief executive of Goffs and managing
director of the now Goffs UK, added, AGoffs and DBS have
worked in increasing harmony over the last nine years and this
brings the two teams closer together at a time when the Goffs
Group continues to grow and innovate. In 2015 we sold nearly
5,000 horses for around i157 million /,121 million across 18
sales and five locations for a wide diversification of vendors
from the UK and Ireland, and to buyers from every corner of the
globe. As a brand, Goffs enjoys a superb international reputation
which can only strengthen what we offer at our sales in
Doncaster and our international identity, especially as the ethos
of industry, integrity and innovation that pervades both auction
venues is now identical.@
The first sale to be conducted by Goffs UK will be the Aintree
Sale Apr. 7, and the first catalogue to be published with the new
logo will be for the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale.
RECORD YEAR FOR AT THE RACES At The Races enjoyed a record year in 2015, including
increased revenues of 15% and increased media rights
payments to racecourse partners of 30%. Figures unveiled by
the company Wednesday also showed a record 8.1 million
different viewers last year, averaging over 2 million every
month. Sport Mediastream, ATR=s wholly owned streaming
platform, delivered over 80 million streams, and Attheraces.com
attracted an average of 2.3 million unique visitors per month.
Matthew Imi, Chief Executive of At The Races, said, AAt The
Races remains very much a growth business and I=m particularly
pleased that our returns back to our racecourse partners were
so impressive last year. We anticipate that this will continue in
2016 as we extend our presence across key markets and
platforms and diversify into other revenue generative sectors.
We look to the future with a considerable degree of confidence
and will be reporting on some significant new initiatives as the
year progresses.@

Politicians Support Aus Industry Cont. from p1
Thompson explained that he has 60 full-time employees to
care for 350 Thoroughbred mares and one full-time worker to
tend to more than 1000 cattle, and Government Chief Whip
Nola Marino, who breeds and races horses in Perth, spoke of
her experience, saying, "There is nothing like winning a race--
whether it's the smallest race at a country track or a big race
that you never expected to win. There's nothing like it. The
equine industry supports so many of our small businesses and
communities but is frequently overlooked in the economic
dividend it provides for our community.@
The event followed a day of political meetings for the TBA,
with issues including a shortage of Equine Herpes Virus vaccine
to a future Research and Development Levy discussed, and
Reilly deemed the events a success.
"It's been a very productive few days in Canberra and I'm
delighted with the response we've had from all corners of
parliament,@ he said. "There's a recognition that as a significant
industry we need support from federal parliament to maintain
our status as a world leader."

INGLIS UNVEILS MIXED SALE INCENTIVES Inglis will introduce new incentives for breeders and vendors,
including reduced commission rates and rebates, at its
Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale May 1 to 4.
Any proceeds of a horse=s sale price in excess of A$100,000
will be commission-free, Inglis=s National Bloodstock Director
Jonathan D=Arcy explained. AThis will mean that vendors whose
weanling or mare sells for A$400,000, for example, will pay only
A$8,000 in commission,@ he said. Inglis is also guaranteeing sales
proceeds to reach vendors by June 15.
Inglis will also assist farms who sell horses on behalf of clients
with travel rebates. Vendors who sell three or more lots will
receive a rebate according to the following structure: A$1,000
for turnover between A$100,000 and A$249,000; A$2,500 for
A$250,000 to A$499,000; A$5,000 for A$500,000 to A$999,000;
and A$10,000 for a million-plus.

GODOLPHIN SETS GUINEAS PACE The Godolphin pair of Steady Pace (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and
Rouleau (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) finished 1-2 in the UAE
2000 Guineas Trial over 1400 meters at Meydan Jan. 14, and
Sheikh Mohammed and his team will certainly be hoping for a
repeat performance when that pair face the starter in the main
event, the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas, Thursday.
Steady Pace is by far the highest-rated horse in the field--112
compared to Rouleau=s 105--and his last-out win franked the
form of a busy juvenile campaign largely spent chasing dual
Group 1 winner Shalaa (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) around
Britain=s racecourses.
A first-out winner at Ascot in May, Steady Pace finished third
in Royal Ascot=s Listed Windsor Castle S. in June before hitting
the board behind Shalaa in the G2 July S. and G2 Richmond S. He
closed out his season with a third behind that rival in the
G1 Middle Park S., with Rouleau a further three lengths back in
fifth. Just a head separated them in the trial, however, and
trainer Charlie Appleby expressed confidence Rouleau would
appreciate the added furlong.
AHe was staying on strongly in the trial,@ said Appleby. AThe
extra 200 metres should really suit him and we expect a big
run.@
Trainer Saeed bin Suroor added of Steady Pace, ASteady Pace
won the trial nicely and has been working well since. He showed
he handles the dirt and hopefully he will go very close.@

MCLAUGHLIN MAKING HIS >MARK= Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin enjoyed a lucrative return to the
Dubai carnival last week, with Frosted (Tapit) and Confrontation
(War Pass) winning feature races, and on Thursday he saddles
the horse he described as his Amost likely@ winner at the
carnival, >TDN Rising Star= Marking (Bernardini), in the G3 Al
Shindagha Sprint. The son of Grade I winner Seventh Street
(Street Cry {Ire}) will be making just his fourth start Thursday. He
broke his maiden at Belmont at first asking in September before
taking an Aqueduct allowance by 5 1/2 lengths Nov. 4, and lost
his unbeaten record when second only to the Eclipse sprint
champion Runhappy
(Super Saver) in the
GI Malibu S. at Santa Anita
Dec. 26. Marking will be
dropping down to six
furlongs for the first time.
AWhen we arrived we
actually thought Marking
was the most likely of our
four Godolphin horses to
win,@ McLaughlin said. AHe is dropping in trip, which is a slight
query, but he is a very nice horse, we think, and one who should
cope with the sprint trip, but could stretch out beyond a mile.@
The lightly raced Marking will have to contend with a seasoned
veteran in the form of track and trip specialist
Reynaldothewizard (Speightstown), a former G1 Dubai Golden
Shaheen winner who has won all three starts at Meydan since
the switch to dirt last year. The 10-year-old gelding was the first-
up winner of the Listed Dubawi S. over this course and distance
Jan. 14, and regular rider Richard Mullen said, AHe seems in
great form. He is not the easiest to gauge at home as he is far
from an exuberant worker, but he has been full of himself,
which has to be a good sign. We could have been drawn better
but he tends to get behind early on anyway and there looks to
be plenty of pace in the race, which will suit him. It is a stronger
race than the one he won last time, but hopefully he has a good
chance.@
One who does boast a win over Reynaldothewizard is Hong
Kong=s Rich Tapestry (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), who
bested the veteran gelding in the 2014 G3 Mahab Al Shimaal
over the Tapeta before finishing second to Sterling City (Aus)
(Nadeem {Aus}) in the G1 Golden Shaheen. Rich Tapestry won
Santa Anita=s GI Sprint Championship later that year and
returned to Meydan last year to be third in the Golden Shaheen,
but will have to rebound from a flat last of 13 in the G1 Hong
Kong Sprint Dec. 13, when he came up empty in the stretch
after contesting the pace.

GO WITH THE FLOW Thursday=s Listed UAE 1000 Guineas is made up largely of two
groups: >TDN Rising Star= Polar River (Congrats), and the fillies
that have chased her around the track in her two dominating
wins. The Doug Watson trainee was an eye-popping 13 1/2-
length maiden
winner on debut at
Meydan Dec. 3, and
she followed up
with a 4 3/4-length
score in the trial for
this race Jan. 14.
Trainer Doug
Watson reported
the bay to be ready
to go, saying, AShe is
in great form and
we are really looking forward to running her again.@ Jockey Pat
Dobbs added, AI would be very surprised if she gets beaten, to
be honest. Her attitude is good and she=s straightforward in
every way. She has a really good turn of foot and a high cruising
speed.@
Godolphin=s Promising Run (Hard Spun) was well adrift of
Polar River when second in the trial, but on the ratings she is
considered equal at 107. The Saeed bin Suroor charge won
Newmarket=s G2 Rockfel S. last year and was making her first
start in the trial since finishing seventh in the G1 Dubai Fillies= Mile
in October, so if she can come on for that run, she looks the one to
pose the greatest danger to the favorite. The only one in the field
to have not yet met Polar River is Promising Run=s stablemate
Dubai Fashion (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who was a first-up winner at
Wolverhampton in September but has to rebound from a fifth in
a Newmarket conditions race on Halloween. Field p7

Hustled along early by Joao Moreira to take up a forward

He was roused to the lead while lugging in a bit with a furlong
