27 MARCH 2019

GOURMET IN THE GARDEN 2019 Last Friday evening the Shire of Kondinin hosted its second Gourmet in the Garden event at the Kondinin Community Garden. The 102 guests arrived from across the district to mingle in the garden which had been beautifully decorated by locals Jo McCubbing and Helen Crane with pre-dinner drinks served by Charlie & Collette Vintage Caravan, aka Simone Lockyer with assistance from Mum Heather, live acoustic music by Denise and Rene of Rhyme and Reason and some lovely canapes . Guests then moved into the marquee which looked amazing orchestrated by Rachel Andrews and her team with ivy and festoon lights hanging from the roof tops, timber barrels adorned with fairy lights and each table decorated to perfection with gorgeous flowers from The Flower Farmacy. The meal was cooked by Sophie Budd of Taste Budd Studios and comprised a delicious entrée of boiled potato Gnocchi with tomato source, yabbies caught from local dams, parmesan and fresh basil served with Sophie’s special home made focaccia. This was followed by a main meal of slow cooked lamb with salad and vegetables from the community garden with a scrumptious dessert of cold lemon souffle made from local lemons. The souffle was an old favourite of Sophie’s which won her first prize in a cooking competition at 16 in the UK! During the evening each table was asked to vote on naming the ‘Community Garden Chook’ from a list of 40 nominations which were submitted to the Shire prior to the event. This was no easy task from a list of very creative suggestions, however the most votes went to ‘Princess Layer’, which was nominated by Hanusia Holland. The winners of the raffles were also announced with the $150 Garden Treasures going to Tammy Wilkins, the Gourmet Delights going to Pauline

from Corrigin and the $50 voucher from CC’s Café going to Minnie Lucchesi. It is intended that the money raised in the raffles will be going towards

the purchase of a community marquee. The running of these type of events is not possible without the assistance of volunteers. I would especially like to thank Rachel Andrews and her team in the amazing job they did on decorating the marquee and to Jo McCubbing who continues to be a stalwart in developing the community garden and Helen Crane who with Jo decorated the entrance and the garden and prepared the canapes. A shout out also to everyone that helped at the busy bee, to Alan, Heather and Ellen who caught and peeled the yabbies and did the registration, to Graeme Robertson and his crew from the Kulin Bush Races and Steve and Sacha who put up and took done the marquee and to all the Shire staff who assisted during the week to prepare for the event. Thank you also to Kristo and Jenny for taking some fabulous photos on the night. A huge thank you also Mia and Ann Franich, Janet Repacholi, Jan Wilkins, Carla Waters and her friend for helping with the prepping in the kitchen before the event, and to local school children Indigo and Maddi Collard, Zali Smeed, Jude and Eli Ackesson-Werth, Albert Eades, Deacon Blurton and Jorja Dohnt for helping Sophie on the night. And most importantly it was wonderful to see locals and visitors from across the district enjoying the evening in an amazing setting with good company, good food, drinks served with a smile from Simone’s gorgeous caravan, lots of laughter, fantastic music, and the fires burning into the night.

COMMUNITY ARTS PROJECT COMES TOGETHER JUST IN TIME!

The Shire of Kondinin in conjunction with the Kondinin Primary School and the Kondinin Arts Group with assistance from Titan Engineering have been working together to create a new collection of public art work that has been recently installed up at the Kondinin Community Garden. In December last year Ann Smoker and Tory Young were fortunate to spend an afternoon with the Kondinin Primary School students creating a collection of drawings by the students that related to a garden. The students came up with some fabulous illustrations of animals, people, tools, and plants that you might find in a garden. A huge thank you to Ann Smoker from the Kondinin Arts Group who then enlarged the images, enabling them to be drawn onto the steel panels with chalk. Using the plasma cutter shared by the Kondinin Men’s Shed and Arts Group, Tory, Ann and Rob Eastley spent time at the Men’s Shed on a Sunday to chalk and then plasma cut the student’s de-signs onto the panels. At short notice (thank you Vaughan!) Titan Engineering then painted the panels and gifted some old timber poles to install the designs at the community garden. A big thank you to Rob Eastley who volunteered his time in doing a fantastic job in plasma cut-ting the designs. Thank you also to Shire Works Crew, Mick, Geoff and Bob who installed the signs at just the right angles in time for the din-ner last Friday evening. The art work is installed on the western wall of the garden and in the morning and when the lights were shining last Friday night (as captured above by Annie Mitchell), create a reflection on the fence behind. Kondinin Primary School kids are welcome to drop into the garden to see if they can recognise their drawings!

KidSport delivers $27 million worth of opportunities for WA kids 18 March 2019

The State Government's program to assist lower-income families to get their children involved in organised

sport has hit a $27 million milestone, with more than 80,000 WA kids having now benefitted from the

Initiative. The KidSport program provides eligible children with grants of up to $150 per year to help pay club fees, easing the burden the rising costs of junior sport places on families. Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray today announced the fund had hit the $27 million milestone — noting the particular benefits it had provided to regional WA, where it has delivered $10 million to eligible children, all the way from Albany to Karratha. Since the program started in in 2011, KidSport has distributed more than 176,000 vouchers to more than 82,000 children. Of those children, some 55,500 had never joined a club before. The cities of Wanneroo and Cockburn have both been big supporters of the program, helping to deliver $2.5 million and $1 million of vouchers respectively to children in their localities.

KidSport is run by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, with the help of 131 local

governments. Applications are open all year round. http://www.dsr.wa.gov.au/funding/individuals/kidsport

National Ride 2 School Day

Friday 22nd March

Thirteen riders - bikes and scooters and two walkers joined the Riding School Bus led by myself and Bronwyn Murray. Only two children who attended school on the day did not join us. Starting just before 8.00 Mrs Smeed headed off to pick up Angela, but whilst going passed David’s picked him up as he was ready. After waiting for Angela to find her helmet and tightening up both David and my helmets we met Tristan and then headed back to pick up Alfonzo. On the corner of Stubbs and Rankin Street we collected Bradley, Mehjaben, Mrs Murray and Payson (thanks Jen for dropping her off). Up a bit further to Milly, Torana and Dieter. Holly and Bridie were still a bit sleepy when we picked them up, but a promise of bacon and eggs for breakfast perked them up. Up to the Anglican Church where we met Brock and Keiren. Mrs Murray had taken some of the children who were on scooters straight to the roadhouse where she met up with Anthony. After negotiating some very rocky bike paths we made it to school, had photos and were greeted by the delicious smell of bacon, eggs, sausages, spaghetti and toast cooked up by Amy, Ruma and Naomi. Well done for all the participants and hopefully it will encourage you to ride or walk to school on a regular basis. Thanks to Bec Culbertson for the donation of the eggs and to the ladies who

cooked it up for the children. Thank you to Bronwyn who helped with the

enthusiastic riders.

Kondinin’s treasure hunt, giant crossword

puzzle and obstacle course

Monday 18th

march

This year’s bike event was planned for the 17th March but due to a clash of events it was changed

to Monday 18th March starting at 4.30pm. We had to complete with the sun setting, but everything

was finished off just as the sun was going down. Luckily we did not have a thunderstorm to contend with too. Ten children and two adults were involved in the treasure hunt, giant crossword puzzle and ob-stacle course. The participants had to ride a lap of the obstacle course which was set up on the skatepark before receiving a picture clue. The photo had to be located and a question about the place answered on the crossword. It was then back to the obstacle course to do another circuit before receiving another clue. Participants certainly got their 30 minutes of exercise on this day, which wasn’t helped when we gave out the wrong clues to one of the groups! Participants had to find clues at the community garden; school; mosaic walk; information bay and surrounds and the sporting precinct. A sausage sizzle and presentation of certificates finished the activity off. Unfortunately we are still waiting on the prizes, but they are due here next week, so we will all get together to hand these out. Thanks to Tory and Nicole for riding around with the kids and to Steve, Lynne and Bronwyn who helped to hand out the clues. Zali took the photos and a display can be seen in the CRC window with examples of the picture clues and the completed crosswords. Well done to children that participated, it was great to see you enjoying yourselves whilst learning a bit more about the community in which you live. Don’t forget to complete the surveys which can be found at www.bikeweek.com.au. It closes on Sunday 7

th April. Drop into the CRC and I will help you complete it if you do not have internet

access.
