UTC Aerospace Systems, Gold Sponsor Wind Challenge Seeks Volunteers, Teams The 2017 Wind Challenge, hosted by the Gorge Technology Alliance, Google, and the Columbia Gorge Community College, returns to the Gorge on Saturday, March 11 at the Fort Dalles Readiness Center. This event allows middle and high school students to learn about wind turbine technology and design and apply their new skills in an all-day competition to build, test, and present their wind turbine models. It is based on creative, hands on curriculum to help ignite student interest in science, technology, and clean energy. Teams can still register until Feb 3 here . Organizers are also seeking many volunteers to serve in several roles. No experience is necessary; training is provided. Wind Challenge Seeks Volunteers, Teams

The 2017 Wind Challenge,hosted by the GorgeTechnology Alliance,Google, and the ColumbiaGorge Community College,returns to the Gorge onSaturday, March 11 at theFort Dalles ReadinessCenter.

The GTA is planning our fourth-annual STEM Career Day wherewe invite all 7th graders in our five-county region to learn aboutlocal career opportunities in science, technology, engineering andmath. Businesses give 20-minute presentations to groups ofabout 25 students on Friday, April 28 at Columbia GorgeCommunity College in The Dalles from 9am to 2pm. The schoolsand students love this event and it is a rewarding way to sharewhat you do and inspire the next generation. Please considercontributing your time to this worthy event! The GTA is currently accepting applications for students pursuingadvanced degrees in science, technology, engineering or mathdisciplines. The Corwin Hardham Memorial Scholarship is open toany graduating high school seniors from our five-county region.Please encourage any applicable students you know to apply.The application is online here and due March 22.

Cascade Angels based in Bend is seeking Oregon start-upbusinesses interested in angel investment. Support to Attend Global Trade Shows

Grants may be available to support small businesses in bothOregon and Washington that are looking to expand internationalexports by attending global trade shows. Export Promotion Grantsreimburse up to 50% of a company's eligible expenses up to$5,000. Eligible applicants may receive up to four grants perFederal fiscal year. Additionally, Oregon is leading delegations to two aviation-specifictrade shows and invite Gorge Oregon businesses to participate intheir booth. A^3 by Airbus Group recently awarded a Flight Test and RangeServices contract for "Project Vahana" to Modern TechnologySolutions, Inc. (MTSI), and their partner, SOAR Oregon (SOAR).Project Vahana is an autonomous flying vehicle platform forindividual passenger and cargo transport. It seeks to advanceautomated electric vertical take off and landing (VTOL) flight forthe emerging on-demand mobility market. The awarded contractcovers the prototype Alpha Phase, which seeks to identify andresolve major technical and certification risks, culminating in aflight test demonstration at the end of 2017. MTSI will lead theFlight Test effort, while their partner SOAR Oregon will providetest range support and other services at the Oregon FAA-designated UAS Test Ranges. Read more

Business Support for Made in America Grants

Grant funds up to $75,000 per company are available forcompanies in the tradable sector (manufacturing and someagriculture and services) that are losing ground to imports. Over many years the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance forFirms program has been an effective tool to turn aroundbusinesses facing import competition from losses and layoffs togrowth and new hiring. NorthwestTAAC operates the program inOregon and Washington through the U.S. Economic DevelopmentAdministration. The program offers three benefits to companies.1. Direct help with qualifying. We offered this no cost or obligation.2. Direct help with planning. Solutions to import impact generallybegin with planning. We offer this with 75% matching.3. Matching fund for multiple projects involving outside expertise.Most solutions will begin with some level of outside expertise,such as production process, product design, quality registration,information systems, website & internet presence, marketingfocus and materials, or any of a broad range of businessimprovement projects. Companies define projects and selectvendors. NorthwestTAAC matches the expense. Any company that is experiencing a loss of business due at leastin part to import competition may qualify.
