The GTA began its involvement in youth robotics in the Gorge in2010 with the first tech education grant we received from theTides Foundation on behalf of Google's Data Center in TheDalles. The original robotics equipment and laptops wepurchased then are still in use and have been supplemented overthe years with several more Google grants and specifieddonations from our members to our robotics fund. The GTA isproud to now have 30 robots and laptops in circulation to schoolsand youth groups in this five county area. We also regularly holdyouth robotics events and host the local qualifying tournamentsfor FIRST LEGO League every December.

The result?

Innovative class time at schools like Hood River MiddleSchool where every student in a single grade level hasleaned robotics. Thousands of students ages 6 to 18 in the Gorge are nowexposed to robotics.Top notch Gorge seniors are leaving for engineeringdegrees with plans to return and work for our techcompanies.

Growing high-quality STEM (science, tech, engineering andmath) programs in the Gorge is part of our mission to support thetechnology community of the region. We're telling you nowbecause we need your help too. From 14 teams in 2010, theFIRST LEGO League tournaments will have around 63 teamsfrom the Gorge competing this December. It will require fourseparate tournaments with lots of volunteers, supplies, anddonations needed. If you would like to help with hours orsponsorship funds, contact Jessica today.

GTA Events in October

Geek Lunch on Oct 15: Intro to Meteor (A JavaScriptFramework)Popular websites such as Google Docs and Facebook areforcing a paradigm shift in web development. These ultra-dynamic sites consist of a single HTML page that updates itselfby using JavaScript to send data to/from the server with AJAX-style requests. AJAX is not new, but managing the complexity ofcoding such massively dynamic websites has required largeteams and complex code. A new breed of JavaScript frameworks(e.g. AngularJS, Ember.js, Meteor) has recently emerged tomake these features possible with much less complexity.

Meteor (www.meteor.com) is arguably the easiest to learnJavaScript framework, yet is also one of the most powerful. JonahPeskin will introduce the basic concepts of JavaScript-focusedweb development, including Node.js and "NoSQL" databases. He will then introduce Meteor by taking you through each step ofbuilding a multi-user, multi-room, real-time chat website in under130 total lines of HTML/JS code.

This talk is best for anyone who has developed a traditionaldatabase-backed website that fetches data from a SQL databaseand then renders the data to HTML (PHP, Python, Ruby,ASP.NET, etc). The talk will assume no familiarity withJavaScript, Node.js, NoSQL, or any frameworks. But all arewelcome!
