Advent Begins Nov. 27, 2011 All Saints Sunday Nov. 6, 2011 Advent is the beginning of the Church Year for most churches in the Western tradition. It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, which is the Sunday nearest Nov. 30, and ends on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24). If Christmas Eve is a Sun- day, it is counted as the fourth Sunday of Advent, with Christmas Eve proper beginning at sundown. The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ in His first Advent, and the anticipation of the return of Christ the King in His Second Advent. Thus, Advent is for more than simply marking a 2,000 year old event in history. It is celebrating a truth about God, the revelation of God in Christ whereby all of creation might be reconciled to God. That is a process in which we now participate, and the consummation of which we anticipate. Scripture reading for Advent will reflect this emphasis on the Second Advent.

Ask the Pastor -What is Halloween?

The name “Halloween” comes from “All Hallows Eve”, which means the night before “All Hallows Day”, which is known in modern times as “All Saints Day”, Novem-ber 1. This day is a celebration of the saints who have died before us. Prayers are offered as a thanks for them, and in the Catholic tradition, the saints are asked to pray with the petitioner to God.Some traditions hold that, on the night before All Saints, poor people would go around their neigh-borhood, sometimes in costume, asking for food in exchange for offering prayers on All Saints Day. Shake-speare even mentions this in The Two Gentlement of Verona. The roots of “trick or treating” are a little more obscure, perhaps started when the food offered was considered insufficient and the person in costume threatened to “trick” the homeowner. In Scotland and Ireland, the children were often asked to do some sort of “trick” such as singing a song.

The Upper Elementary Sunday School Classis collecting socks and candy bars for Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center. There has been a call from Beaumont for 100 pairs of white crew socks (not short ones) and 100 candy bars to put in gift bags for the youth incarcerated at Beau-mont. This is in lieu of dinners and gift bags made up by each volunteer group.

Not all young men have received things in the past and some groups got more than others. The deadline for collection will be December 11.

The Good News of Gum Spring United Methodist ChurchLouisa Foundation Match Update

Just over one month ago, the William A. Cooke Foundation issued a challenge to individuals, churches and civic groups. The Foundation pledged to match every dollar raised up to $100,000 to assist homeowners repair in the wake of the August 23 earthquake. To date, just over $50,000 has been raised to meet the challenge.

This emergency fund was established to help uninsured or underinsured homeowners pay for re-pairs not covered by other disaster relief sources. Persons wishing to donate can make checks out to the Fluvanna/Louisa Housing Foundation, P. O. Box 160, Louisa, VA 23093 with “Louisa Earth-quake” written in the memo line. For more information, visit www.louisacounty.com/LCHF/in-dex.php.

“The W.A. Cooke Foundation Grant Fund provides funding for projects that benefit the residents of Louisa and Orange counties. In the past, we’ve been able to support a diverse range of public projects, including the Louisa County Historical Society Sargeant Museum, the Cooke-Haley Theatre at the Louisa Arts Center, and the William A. Lay Speaking MinistriesWhat is the Lay Speaking Ministries Program?Leading, Caring, Communicating: these words characterize what lay speakers do in ministry as The United Methodist Church engages the world of the 21st century!

LEADING: Lay speakers combine words and actions in leadership roles within their churches and communities.CARING: As lay speakers combine words with deeds, they find ways to care for others. Some are involved in crisis min-istries, such as visiting grieving families. Lay speakers share a ministry of caring one-on-one with people in times of need and in times of joy, and show their faith by responding to others with care--giving love and service.COMMUNICATING: Both the Bible and Christian experience point to the importance of proclaiming God’s transform-ing love for a broken world. Lay speakers often fill pulpits, lead Bible studies, or speak in youth and children’s groups, health care centers, retirement centers, prison ministries, and more.Lay Speaking Ministries is a program to provide training opportunities and experiences to equip disciples of Jesus Christ to realize and respond to their personal calls to ministry. Since each disciple is ‘gifted’ with one or more spiritual gifts (skills given by the Holy Spirit for the express purpose of serving the body of believers and thereby God), Lay Speaking Ministries strives to help disciples become aware of their particular gifts by offering educational events to enhance and develop the skill level necessary for the full fruition of these gifts. It is an excellent vehicle for servant ministry skill de-velopment and has aided thousands of church members to be better servants of Jesus Christ, to become stronger church family leaders, and to more capably assist their pastors.

What is a Lay Speaker?A United Methodist Lay Speaker is a member of a local church or charge who:• Is an active supportive member of the United Methodist Church;• Is ready and eager to serve the Church;• Is well informed on and committed to the Scriptures and the doctrine, heritage, organization, and life of The United Methodist Church;• Has received specific training to develop skills in witnessing to the Christian faith through spoken communications, church and community leadership, and care-giving ministries;• Is committed to witnessing through church and community leadership, care-giving ministries, and spoken communica-tion; and• Is willing to improve his or her skills for service.

Lay Speaking Ministries offers training opportunities for laity who would like to use their witness, leadership, and service to inspire others to a deeper commitment to Christ and more effective discipleship. This may include the interpretation of the Scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of the church.

Local Church Lay Speakers:• Support and minister to the local church• Look for leadership opportunities in the local church• Must file a report with their Charge Conference every year• Take a refresher course every three yearsCertified Lay Speakers:• Support and minister to the local church and beyond• Can be utilized by other congregations• Look for leadership opportunities in the local church and beyond• Must file a report with their Charge Conference every year• Must take at least one Advanced Course every three years to maintain certification. What the Discipline Says about Lay Speaking MinistriesLay Speaking Ministries is described in numerous places in the 2008 Book of Discipline, with the main description for local church requirements being in Paragraphs 266 (p. 197) – 269 (p. 270)

Pastor’s Corner:What is a saint? In the Greek, saint simply means “set apart”. While we occasionally use this term with living people, in the Protestant church, we normally use it for the dead. Yet Paul clearly intends it to be used of all Christians: He commonly refers to the recipients of his letters as “saints” and uses it for all Christians.

So in the first case, we know many people who have died and yet we still feel their influence. We give thanks to God for these saints--perhaps it was a parent or grandparent, a teacher, or a friend who taught you something that changed your life. It might even be someone who passed through you life only for a moment. Yet in some way, they brought you closer to God.On Sunday, November 6, we will celebrate “All Saints sunday”. During our service, we will read the names of the saints who have died in the past year and light a candle as a reminder of the light they left burning. If you have the name of a person you want us to remember, please let the church office know as soon as possible. It would be helpful if we knew the date of their death, as well.

The important part, though, is not just remembering these saints, but make the best part of them a part of us. What did they do that had an impact on your life? Then what follows is obvious: What can you do to have an impact on someone else’s life? How can your life be a pointer to God to someone else?

Living or dying, we are called to be saints in Christ. May we live lives worthy of the name of the One who saved us.

See ya Sunday!Jeff
