Our parish mission is to “Go and make disciples of all nations.” If we are going to accomplish that mission, we
need to “go,” to be present and active in the community beyond the walls of our church. As one way to accomplish this, we are forming a new ministry called the Borromeo Volunteer Corps. Once a month, we will fi nd a volunteer opportunity in the community for our parishioners to assist with.
Our fi rst service project will be Sunday, Feb. 16, from 2-3 p.m. at Barnwell Middle School (1035 Jungs Station Rd, St. Charles, MO 63303). We will be helping with an organization called KEEN, which stands for “Kids Enjoy Exercise Now.” KEEN is a volunteer organization that provides free one-to-one recreational and sports programs for children and young adults with more profound and severe mental and physical disabilities. Volunteers will work with young people to engage them in recreational and sports activities. (I volunteered with KEEN when I was in seminary, and it is a very fun program.)
Each month, we will have a different volunteer opportunity. They will vary in the type of work being done, but all of them will give us an opportunity as a parish to go out and be present in our community.
We want to form a database of parishioners who are interested in helping. After Masses today, we will be collecting information from parishioners who would like to be part of the Borromeo Volunteer Corps. You do not have to commit to being there every month. This is simply to form a database of interested parishioners whom we can contact to alert them of opportunities.
If you are interested, please sign up after Mass or e-mail me at [email protected]. Special thanks to Tammy Buehler and Ryan Endres for helping to create this new ministry.

"What a great experience. It was a good opportunity for me to meet and grow my fellow brothers in the parish. The weekend was one of the best spiritual experiences I’ve had in a long time. I look to put on another great session and hope to see a lot of new faces."
- Jay VanDerBeck
"I made friendships with several parish brothers where Christ will always be the nucleus of those friendships. It was also a great chance to just get away from everyday life and just spend time refl ecting on how essential it is to keep God in my heart and mind continuously. I look forward to another wonderful weekend with my focus on Christ."

We are launching a new program called “Friends of St. Charles
Borromeo.” The purpose of this program is two-fold: to allow people to share in the spiritual blessings of the parish and to support the continued upkeep of our parish.
For a free-will donation, you can enroll yourself or a loved one, living or deceased, in the Friends of SCB. Members of the Friends of SCB will be remembered in the prayers of the parish, and Mass will be offered monthly for all members. The money raised through this program will be used for maintenance, upkeep, and capital expenditures.
There are envelopes in the vestibule that you can use to enroll in the program. We can also send a postcard to your loved one notifying them that they have been enrolled.
We hope that many parishioners will take advantage of this new opportunity both to support our parish and to share in the spiritual fruit of our parish family’s prayers.
Participe en el "Friends of SCB"
Estamos lanzando un nuevo programa llamado “Friends of
fallecido, en Friends of SCB.

The visit of the Magi occurs directly before the story of the Holy Family’s
fl ight into Egypt. Matthew’s Gospel tells a version of Jesus’s birth that is different than the one in Luke. Of the actual birth of Jesus, Matthew tells us little more than, “When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod...” The story of the census is found only in Luke’s Gospel, but we hear about the visit of the Magi only in Matthew’s Gospel.
We know little about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to Bethlehem, following an astrological sign, so we believe them to be astrologers. We assume that there were three Magi based upon the naming of their three gifts. The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel, they represent the Gentiles’ search for a savior. Because the Magi represent the entire world, they also represent our search for Jesus.
We have come to consider the gifts they bring as a foreshadowing of Jesus’s role in
salvation. We believe the meaning of the gifts to be Christological. Gold is presented as representative of Jesus’s kingship. Frankincense is a symbol of his divinity because priests burned the substance in the Temple. Myrrh, which was used to prepare the dead for burial, is offered in anticipation of Jesus’s death.
The word Epiphany means “manifestation” or “showing forth.” Historically several moments in Christ’s early life and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” including his birth in Bethlehem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his fi rst miracle at Cana.
