Student Rights and Responsibilities and Code of Conduct (English and Spanish)

In order to ensure a safe, productive, and positive learning environment, MCPS publishes two documents that help students, parents/guardians, and staff understand school rules and regulations; the expectations for student conduct; and the possible consequences for violating the rules. A Student’s Guide to Rights and Responsibilities is an overview of the rights and responsibilities students enjoy in MCPS and a summary of the laws and regulations that affect students.

The MCPS Code of Conduct provides an overview of discipline procedures and protocols and the range of consequences students could face for violating various policies, regulations, and rules. The guide also discusses the MCPS philosophy toward discipline.

All families received copies of these documents and are encouraged to review them with their child(ren). The documents are available online at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/students/rights/.

Derechos y Responsabilidades del Estudiante y Código de Conducta

Forum for Equity and Excellence Set for October 15 (English and Spanish)

The Black and Brown Forum for Educational Equity and Excellence will be held on Tuesday, October 15. The event, which is being hosted by the NAACP Parents’ Council and Identity, is set for 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Gaithersburg High School, 101 Education Boulevard in Gaithersburg. The forum will bring together Montgomery County education stakeholders, advocacy partners supporting the Black and Brown Educational Equity Coalition, and other community leaders for a discussion of evidence-based solutions to create better educational outcomes for students of color in MCPS.

The MCPS Parent Academy is kicking off its fall season today, Thursday, September 26. Parents/guardians and members of the community are invited to participate in these free workshops that provide information, resources, tools, and tips to support your child’s success in school. Don’t miss this season of workshops, which will be offered on a range of topics, including college and career planning, mental health, cybersafety and social media, active parenting, and positive communication. Parent Academy workshops are free. Childcare and interpretation services are provided upon request. A full list of courses will be posted at

If you’ve started wondering about college and how to pay for it, learn more during free financial aid workshops that will be held throughout the fall at MCPS high schools. During these sessions, parents/guardians and students will learn what financial aid is, what kinds of financial aid are available, and how students can apply for need-based financial aid. Saturday School (The George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy, Inc. kicks off its 2019–2020 season of Saturday

School on Saturday, September 21. Saturday School is a low-cost tutoring and mentoring program that provides a sixth day of learning and helps MCPS students enhance their mastery of core academic subjects. Students who are in need of additional academic support can attend sessions at one of 12 locations across Montgomery County. Classes begin on

County Executive to Host Budget Forums Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich is holding the first of five budget forums on Monday, Oct. 7, to seek input

from residents about Fiscal Year 2021 (FY21) Operating Budget priorities. The forum will begin at 7 p.m. at the Wheaton

Library and Community Recreation Center at 11701 Georgia Ave in Wheaton.

Additional FY21 Operating Budget forums are scheduled for:

Monday, Oct. 21 – 7 p.m. – Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, 4805 Edgemoor Ln, Bethesda.

Community News and Events The 2019 flu season is upon us. There are simple steps you and your child can take to stay healthy and help prevent the flu. That includes getting a yearly flu vaccine.

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services will conduct free injectable flu vaccine clinics on Nov. 12 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. for children 18 and under at John F. Kennedy, Northwest and Rockville high schools. These clinics will be open to any school-aged child.

The clinics are free, but registration is required due to limited vaccine supplies. For more information, visit the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services website.

An Important Health Message Regarding Food at South Lake

Dear Parents/Guardians: Food allergies have become common among students nationally and within our school system. Currently, one or more students in your child’s class have a severe food allergy to peanuts and/or tree nuts that could result in a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. In order to minimize the risks to these students and to strengthen healthy habits, we encourage students to wash their hands before and after eating and we are reminding them not to share food with their classmates. We ask for your support in reinforcing these habits at home. In addition, we urge you to send snacks that do not contain any peanuts or tree nuts such as walnuts, cashews, pecans, pine nuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. Lost and Found

Please encourage your child to come and look

for any forgotten jackets or sweaters. During

lunch time, we will display all of the clothing in

the lost and found so that students have an op-

portunity to retrieve any forgotten items. After a

month goes by, we will donate the clothing .

Por favor anime a su hijo a que venga y busque

chaquetas o suéteres olvidados. Durante la hora

diantes tengan la oportunidad de recuperar
