In order to expand their primary and specialty care capabilities in the Brighton area, University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) contracted Aristeo

Construction Company to pour concrete foundations on a new 320,000-square-foot health care center. Our decades of experience self performing concrete work and access to privately owned equipment made us the perfect choice for this demanding job.

Creating a safety culture is something we actively work at every day. As an industry, we have come a long way in terms of safety—those of you of my vintage can remember some of the “best practices” thirty years ago that

would be completely unheard of today! As a company, we have not only strived to match industry standards, but exceed them by truly ingraining safety into our culture.

One of the hallmarks of our “Everyone Goes Home” safety program is proper planning, particularly when changes occur. If I’ve learned one thing over the last 40 years, it’s that change on a project is unavoidable. It’s how we handle those last minute changes, however, that define us as a company – and determine if a project is successful or not.

Taking our time to stop, think through the change, effectively identify all of the hazards we may encounter, and come up with a plan to mitigate those hazards, is a critical step to ensure the project is completed safely and efficiently.

We all know how difficult it can be to deal with never-ending scheduling and production pressures, but at the end of the day safety is the most important part of all of our jobs. Proper change management and planning is the only way to ensure safety so that everyone goes home.

A heavy self perform concrete job, the Aristeo team poured 4,000 cubic yards of concrete to create footings, basement walls, and grade walls. The basement walls, over 20 feet tall, were poured with the help of Aristeo’s own MEVA panels. The MEVA panels were constructed on the ground and lifted into place with our privately-owned Mantis crane.

In addition, a continuous pour of 300 cubic yards of concrete and 270 tons of resteel created the building’s mass foundation. Slab work consisted of 180,000 square feet / 3,500 cubic yards of slab on grade and 115,000 square feet / 1,700 cubic yards of slab on deck. Also included was 180,000 square feet of welded wire mesh, slab on grade resteel, and 80 tons of slab on deck resteel.

At the end of the project, Aristeo was complimented by UMHS for site safety and performance. Not only was the project completed on schedule and on budget after more than 13,500 man hours, but our team also boasted a pristine safety record, with zero recordables and zero first aid incidents. Aristeo is proud to have assisted UMHS with their new health center, which will support a growing number of patients in the Brighton area and provide over 40 UMHS specialty care services to children and adults, all under one roof.

Sunday, May 21, 2017 marked our Fourth Annual Kids’ Day at Aristeo’s office in Livonia. It was a day of fun and celebration for employees and

their families, complete with delicious food, a frozen yogurt truck, and tons of activities for the kids. With over 250 employees and their family members in attendance, this event was one of our best attended Kids’ Days at Aristeo yet.

The day was busy from start to finish, as kids competed to blow up balloons, won prizes at a Giant Plinko, enjoyed coloring and painting stations, and played in the sand with toy excavators. Aristeo’s own construction equipment turned out to be the most popular activity as kids were able to sit at the controls, honk the horns, and pretend to operate the machinery. Older children (or those with an adult) were even able to operate a mini excavator.

Aristeo employees love bringing their children to the office and introducing them to the equipment they work with every day, as well as meeting and mingling with coworkers’ families and friends. At Aristeo, we’re all one big family, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event!

An Aristeo-sponsored team of construction management and engineering students won first place at the fifth annual Bid Day

Simulation on March 28th, 2017. The event, hosted by Chapter 17 of the American Society of Professional Estimators and the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), introduces students to the fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled activities of a real world bid day. Aristeo was proud to yet again be a Gold Sponsor of the event and assist our team in their victory.

Professional estimators lead each team through the ups and downs of the bid day process, including everything from the stresses of unavailable subcontractors to the complexities of comparing different bid numbers. The students are required to review the scope of work for their project, decide which costs are needed, obtain and compare three quotes for each trade, and make decisions about which subcontractor to utilize. The winning team, sponsored by Aristeo and led by our own Susan Gollon, submitted a bid number closest to the preset “target”.

ARISTEO TAKES 1ST PLACE AT ANNUAL BID DAY SIMULATION

A great opportunity for students to learn how bids are handled in the real world, the event also donates all proceeds to scholarships for students interested in construction cost estimating careers. Thank you to Susan Gollon for representing Aristeo and inspiring students to pursue careers in construction.

A team of students led by Aristeo’s own Susan Gollon won first place at the annual Bid Day Simulation.

Aristeo’s team listens to the latest announcement in the Bid Day Simulation before assessing how it will affect their bid.
