Strategies Can Help Your Child Achieve School Resolutions'A new calendar year is a chance for a fresh start. It's a good time to talk with your child about how the school year is going. Isshe happy with the progress she has made? Are there things she wants to change?

New Year's resolutions can be a good way to make positive change. But resolutions by themselves can't lead to change. Hereare some ways your child can actually achieve the positive resolutions she makes:

Start small. Your child is probably not going to go from doing 10 minutes of reading a week to finishing an entire bookeach week. Instead, help her figure out smaller steps. "How about if you read for 15 minutes before bed?" Each smallstep builds her "reading muscles" for even greater success.

Think about the rewards. Suppose your child says she'd like to change the grade she's getting in math. Before shemakes her plan for how to improve, help her focus on the rewards of getting a higher grade. Once she has a picture ofthat success, it will be easier to make the changes.

Plan ahead. If one of her goals is to watch less TV but she always turns on the TV after school, help her think about whshe can do differently. Perhaps she can have a snack or play with the dog instead.

Celebrate successes. Change is not always easy. So celebrate every success. If she only reads for 30 minutes a day four days this week, that's still a lot more reading than she was doing before!

PropellersDo you wonder how to connect better with your children? Do you wonder what matters to them, and how you can assist them grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible citizens? PHONE NUMBER?Do Your Children Know Their Home PhoneNumbers?... Almost every afternoon, students comeinto the office to call home, but cant do it without ourhelp because they dont know a phone number tocontact a parent or care giver. Knowing a phone

number to contact a family member is a life skill that allour students should have. It will make them feel moreindependent, and you will feel more confident that theycan reach you in an emergency. For those too young toremember multiple numbers, we suggest that you writedown important phone numbers and have your childkeep them in his/her backpack for easy access.
