Cabernet is CA’s most widely planted red wine grape; however, this was not always the case. In the early ‘70s there was an enormous expansion of Cabernet plantings throughout CA. To give some perspective on the explosive growth, in 1963, only 1,417 acres of Cabernet vines were planted. By 1976 that number totaled 27,000 acres, largely attributed to the successful collaboration between Concannon and U.C. Davis in developing the Concannon Clones. After the Judgment of Paris, California had new excitement and confidence for growing Cabernet, and the Concannon Clones quickly became an essential asset to the enormous expansion of Cabernet plantings that ensued. Remarkably, by 2014, that number had climbed to 88,000 acres of Cabernet vines in California, of which 80 percent is estimated to be plantings of the Concannon Clones. A s you enjoy your wines, please raise a glass with me to toast California Cabernet and the Paris Tasting that transformed the world of wine. Cheers! Last year, we were excited to introduce Concannon’s first varietal bottling of our estate-grown Malbec. Now, being huge fans of dry Rosé, John and I are thrilled to announce the release of Concannon’s first—Rosé of Petite Sirah. This is the Rosé you’d expect from Concannon Vineyard: crafted with our prized, Estate Petite Sirah fruit, this Rosé is crisp and refreshing with juicy flavors of strawberry, raspberry and watermelon balanced by bright acidity—a lovely expression of rich fruit and floral aromas. A perfect spring and summertime sipper, this elegant Rosé pairs beautifully with many lighter dishes. Some of my favorites are Spicy Tuna Tartar, Smoked Salmon Goat Cheese and Warm Caprese Panini Sandwiches. Since this is an extremely limited- production wine, I’m also thrilled to let you know that our new Rosé will be released to you, our members first — at our First Friday on May 6th. We’ll also be providing members a first tasting of this lively Rosé at the Gatekeeper’s Spring Release Weekend. I look forward to seeing you in May and sharing our 2015 Rosé of Petite Sirah with you soon. All the best! It was the “vinous shot heard around the world.” It was

the moment that catapulted California wine onto the world wine stage. It was the singular event that revolutionized the American and international world of wine. It was the 1976 Judgment of Paris.

Forty years ago, May 24, 1976, during this legendary,

blind tasting, French judges shocked the world by choosing unknown California Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines over France’s best of Bordeaux and Burgundy. A new generation of California wines had emerged out of the devastation of Prohibition, and the California wine region, which had been unnoticed and unheralded since 1920, proved once again that California could be as great a winegrowing region as Bordeaux — and Concannon Cabernet was there!

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris, I look forward to our enjoying some great

wine together — every bottle has a story, and we have some remarkable stories to share! The Paris Tasting took place during a time of extraordinary risk and determination, dreams and innovation. It was the time of the post-Prohibition, California wine pioneers who founded a new California wine industry: among them, Warren Winiarski, André Tchelistcheff, Joe Heitz, Bob Travers, Robert and Peter Mondavi, Mike Grgich, Jim Barrett, Ernest Wente, Dr. Harold Olmo, Curt Alley —

From our Table to Yours... Cheers!

This classically-styled Viognier with a complex essence has a distinctly rich and creamy texture. Floral aromas of honey blossom mingle with green apple and white peach, fusing fresh melon and apricot flavors with a hint of fig on the finish.

A lush, well-structured wine with rich aromas of vanilla and butterscotch. This Chardonnay is bright with acidity, vibrant flavors of crisp green apple, melon and pear intermingle to create a seamless taste that leads to a smooth, creamy finish with notes of oak and vanilla.

This full-bodied Rhone blend is styled to complement a wide variety of hearty, well-seasoned dishes. Loaded with expressive red fruit aromas, leading to flavors of raspberry and ripe plum with subtle vanilla. The Stampmaker’s Red is grounded by well-balanced integrated oak and a well-built acid backbone.

Our Reserve Pinot Noir is rich and focused displaying abundant flavors of black cherry and intense raspberry with complex aromas of vanilla, spice and cola. The intensity and structure of this wine is well balanced and finishes with fine, tannins and touches of toasty cedar and oak.

Deep inky hues true to this varietal, our 2013 Captain Joe’s Petite Sirah is bursting with expressive aromas of mocha and dark red fruits. Luscious and full-bodied, the delightful berry and plum flavors are unified with notes of pepper and spice. Balance between intensity and finesse, gives way to fine silky tannins, which persist on the palate with notes of sweet vanilla oak.

Our Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon presents an abundance of mature dark fruit aromas with nuances of warm spice and vanilla. Expressive and lush flavors of bright red cherry, blackberry and ripe currant are rich and abundant in the mouth, yet silky on the palate. The well integrated sweet oak flavors lead to a lavishly smooth finish.

This elegantly intense Petite Sirah has a complex palate of big bold blackberry, black cherry and blueberry flavors. Its rich structure and ample tannins marry well with the complex, yet restrained dark fruit flavors and melded oak characteristics of vanilla and spice. Enjoy now, or cellar worthy upwards of 5-15 years.
