We abuse land because we regard it

as a commodity belonging to us. When we

see land as a community to which we belong,

we may begin to use it with love and respect.

—Aldo Leopold

FUNDO PILLÁN

Province of Palena

Patagonia, Chile

10th Region of the Lakes

Fundo Pillán is a 492 hectare (1215 acre) estate in the Chaitén area of the province of Palena in the heart of the 10th Region, or Region of the Lakes,

in Chile. The fundo, or farm, stands on the estuary of the Reñihué Fjord, which flows alongside the Pumalín National Park into the South Pacific, and is bisect-ed by the Pillán River.

Although the property is a working farm, most of its productive activity is con-centrated in the middle of its territory, with some 80% of its lands in pristine condition, home to a rich variety of flora and fauna.

INFRASTRUCTURE

The main two-story house is spacious and typical of the turn-of-the-century farmhouses in southern Chile. It also has two independent guest houses and accommodation for farm-

hands and administrative offices, barns and warehousing, as well as the honey-processing plant and sheep shed. Fundo Pillán has its own airstrip, as the easiest means of access to the estate is by air on a private charter flight some 40 minutes flying time from Puerto Montt airport.

THE FARM

This is a very attractive investment opportunity for conservation-minded buyers keen to return to the land and its traditions.

While the property’s forests, rivers and lakes offer a wide range of recreational and conservation activities, the farm has its own apiary and honey-processing facilities, berry plantations and flock of sheep, which contribute to the income required to keep the estate self-financing.

CONSERVATION VALUES

The land offers an abundant variety of natural habitats from beach to meadow and fjord, including vast tracts of lowland temperate damp forest,

where evergreens, including the Patagonian arrayán, pitra and ulmo trees, the latter attracting honey bees, grow in thick profusion.

The wildlife is colorful and diverse: the mountain coypu monkey, Patagonian fox, ferrets, the Andean puma and river otters. The region is also home to a number of endangered species such as the pudu, the smallest deer in the world, and the Chilean dolphin. There are a huge amount of indigenous bird species: penguins and cormorants live on the rocky coastline, while swans and herons inhabit the river and its shores, and condor, hawks, eagles and other birds of prey nest high up in the mountain crags.

RECREATIONAL ATTRIBUTES

The neighboring Pumalín Park with its russet and copper lenga and Antarctic beech trees, the Pillán River and the fjord in the shadow of the

magnificent Michinmahuida volcano, offer outdoor enthusiasts a full range of hiking, camping, riding and canoeing options.

The fishing season lasts from November until early May, and rainbow, brown trout and Atlantic salmon can be caught anytime. Sea run fish enter the waters beginning in January.
