From waterfall to agile…
Transitioning to AgilePM – Lessons Learned
1. It is not a simple switch from PRINCE2 to AgilePM so become an expert, get educated and really understand AgilePM before you begin the transition.
2. There are different pressures, different priorities and a change of pace managing an agile project compared to a PRINCE2 project.
3. Don’t throw everything away, the two approaches can be combined to create something that is greater than the sum of their parts.
It is not a simple switch
Switching from PRINCE2 to AgilePM
1. AgilePM is not a methodology, it’s a philosophy so it requires deep understanding of how it works to get the best out of it.
2. Switching to AgilePM involves changes roles and responsibilities so requires some organisational redesign.
3. AgilePM changes the expectations of what is delivered, when and how so research the impact on your business and identify why agile is better.

• Greater involvement of users changes the team dynamics
• Responsibilities for Team Leaders and Project Managers can lead to imbalance in salaries

Different pressures
Different pressures
Waterfall:•Gather all requirements up front•Decide on timeframe based on requirements•Deliver project at end of project lifecycle•Manage change if it is requested but don’t seek it out•Document designs•Report on progress and decisions
Agile:•Agree project scope and ‘Must Haves’ up front•Decide on requirements based on timeframe•Deliver project throughout project lifecycle•Actively seek feedback and more ideas throughout project•Talk through designs•Report on achievements and decisions
How it feels for the project team
• Stop/Start work – constantly breaking off to show users what you have created
• Lack of belief in your work – being given feedback on unfinished work
• Very focused on current work – everything else is an annoying interruption
• Certainty of direction – you know you are creating what users want
• In it together – feeling valued by the business, no longer a them and us culture
• Delivery of more value – greater influence and use of commercial awareness
How it feels for the users
Lots of interruptions – not always easy to find the time to spend with the project teamCreativity and imagination – cannot give a simple list of requirements, need to participate in solution creationMore direction needed – project team needs to be pushed towards solutionWe get what we want – increased probability that what we get is what we need
Integrate not compete
One method is not better than the other..
Waterfall:+ve•Provides full information to stakeholders•Strong governance framework-ve•Bureaucratic•Inflexible, doesn’t respond to change
Agile:+ve•Meets needs of customers and responds to their changing needs•Delivers on time so certainty of when to go live-ve•No documentation•No control, people do what they want
Use AgilePM to enhance your projects
Don’t throw your waterfall method away:•Alienating those on the periphery of project management•Losing the progress we have made in sponsorship and governanceChange the emphasis:•Keep your existing structure – terminology, documentation, routines•Replace the contents – Project Plan becomes Delivery Plan and Deployment Plan; Requirements become Prioritised Requirements List; Models replace presentations; Testing is early and frequent
Methods can align!
Development:•Focus is on creation, trial and error and demonstrating early value to customers
Project Management:•Focus is on creation, trial and error and demonstrating early value to customers
Governance:•Strong audit trail, keeps stakeholders informed
