Chris’ Australian team played in Group B against Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Mexico & Spain. Whilst the side did not progress from the group stage it played some top flight football on the world stage. Congratulations Chris on not only playing for your country but also completing the Trial HSC @ the same time! Chris Naumoff far left front row, prior to playing Mexico HSC Major Works also continue to be completed and externally marked, both Design and Technology and Visual Arts are scheduled for this week. Once again thanks to all those teachers who have contributed to these bodies of works and in particular to Mr Gibson and Ms Wailes for all the extra personal time they have generously given their students. We have a whole school assembly this Thursday in John Paul II Hall and would like to remind parents that they are more than welcome to attend these community events. Just as a matter of organisation we ask that parents sign in at reception in the College Office and to be seated in the hall by 11:50am. One of the ‘highlights’ of World Youth Day Pilgrimage was the opportunity to be immersed in some mission work in some of the poorest neighbourhoods of Lima, the capital city of Peru. I use the word ‘highlight’ in the sense that the opportunity to add in some small way, to the quality of life of people who have very little in terms of the services and infrastructure, that we consider absolutely essential and probably mostly take for granted. Fresh running water, electricity, sanitation, health services, basic primary education, law and order are all absent or in very short supply in the shanty town of Pamplona. The simple act of stair building allows for ease in traversing steep slopes for the residents to access communal kitchens, water and chapels. Importantly, the presence of stairs also attracts some small level of local government support in the provision of essentials like access to power, water deliveries and the simple recognition that a community actually exists. The work done on these days was very physically demanding but more significantly, gave a sense of the scale and the way in which some of the truly poorest people on our planet exist. I hope some of these photos give some indication of what the students from Sydney Catholic schools achieved, including our ‘Aquinians’. Pamplona ‘streetscape’ Cement ‘pouring’

HSC Prayer Families As our Year 12 students prepare for their upcoming HSC examinations, we invite you to become a HSC Prayer Family. This would involve keeping a student that you will be allocated in your prayers leading up to, and during the HSC exam period next term. If you would like to participate in this program, please complete your details at: http://tinyurl.com/2013AquinasHSCPrayer by Friday September 6th 2013. HSC Judaism Workshop Last Friday, Year 12 Studies of Religion students attended a workshop on their HSC Judaism unit. Mrs Sandy Hollis, the Director of Education at the Emanuel Synagogue, worked with our students, revising the three options that they have undertaken in their Judaism Religious Tradition Depth Study: Moses Maimonides, Bioethics, and Marriage. The expertise Mrs Hollis shared with our students is invaluable in their preparation for their HSC examination. Year 7-9 Assessment Tasks A reminder that students in Years 7-9 will submit their Term 3 Religious Education assessment task this week. Students are encouraged to speak to their Religious Education teacher if they have any questions. Mrs Catherine Nolan Religious Education Coordinator

Reflection on the Gospel

In Sunday’s Gospel (Lk 14:1, 7-14) Jesus had a meal at the house of one of the leading Pharisees. After noticing how they picked the places of honour, he told a parable, concluding with the statement “for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted.” He also challenged the host to not only invite relations, friends and rich neighbours, but to invite those less fortunate than themselves. This Gospel has implications for how we share the riches with which we have been blessed, with others in the world. It also reminds us that at Christ’s banquet, it is not the poised and perfect who are the most welcome, but the vulnerable. God embraces those parts of us that are in the greatest need of his love and healing.

2009 Q10

I was born in Italy and while riding my horse one day I came across a leper. I clothed him and bandaged his wounds. I decided to hand all my possessions back to my rich father and became a beggar. I dedicated my life to helping the poor. I believed that the natural world deserved care and respect because it was part of the gift that God had given all humans. I often spoke about God to rocks, birds and trees. I am a. Paul of Tarsus. b. Mother Teresa. c. St Francis of Assisi. d. St John of the Cross.
