FROM THE PRINCIPAL 23 August 2018

The students have participated in many additional opportunities this term that help to build the holistic child, a love of learning and life long learners.

Most recently the years Prep to 3 travelled to Rockhampton to see the show “Josephine wants to Dance”. A big thank you to our P&C for providing the funding for the tickets to enable us to go.

The whole school participated in Archery Lessons and showed that at Wowan State School we all have good aim! On day one we learnt how to hold a bow, shoot an arrow, and how to participate safely. On day two we played pop the balloon. The balloons were pinned to the targets and there were lots of cheers for each other when a balloon was popped.

The police also made a visit to school with the scent detection dogs. We were amazed when the dogs were able to locate the hidden object amongst the items presented to them. A big thanks to Senior Constable Newson for organising the visit and to Officer Cam-eron for bring his dogs out to Wowan.

The entire school also participated in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathe-matics) day at Jambin State School. The students became inquirers and scientists for the day. Many thanks go to Jambin State School Staff for organising and hosting the event held in Science Week.

Yesterday, we came to school in our pyjamas as part of book week celebrations and to raise money for the “Pyjama Foundation”. We had fun learning in our pyjamas for the day. The school community raised $60 for the Pyjama Foundation. Thank you everyone for your support and donations on this day.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

Wowan State School is a PBL school. We actively encourage positive behaviors in and out of our classrooms. These behaviors create a happy, safe and caring learning envi-ronment. Our school guidelines are:

Be Respectful - Be Responsible - Be a Learner - Be Safe

At Wowan we believe that being safe and happy at school impacts academic success.

Our students are acknowledged for meeting these expectations on our Tuesday morn-ing assemblies. We encourage as many parents as possible to join us at our assem-blies to congratulate and celebrate the great work of our Wowan State School stu-dents. This week we have been focusing on BEING RESPECTFUL by greeting each other politely.

Nihongo News! Language Department News

こんにちは!Konnichi wa!

Wowan students in Years 5 and 6 enjoy weekly

Japanese lessons as part of the whole school

curriculum. These lessons occur each Tuesday

and Thursday and are delivered online via web

conferencing.

We have had a busy start to our Japanese lessons this semester.

Our current learning focus is ‘What is school life? ‘. Students have been

investigating what school is like in Japan and have started to make comparisons

between Japanese schools and their own school life here in Australia. We are also

learning a range of language to discuss school experiences.

Towards the end of Term 3, students will be required to create a written recount,

in Japanese, of their favourite school day. In Term 4, they will undertake a

reading comprehension task based on a letter from a Japanese school.

How can I help my child with their Language learning?

There are many ways! Here are some my top picks:

Encourage your child to share with you what they are learning in their Japanese lessons each

week! What interesting facts can they remember?

Ask your child to become the Sensei and have them teach you some Japanese words and phrases.

This roleplay will help them to consolidate what they are learning about in class!

Access a large collection of language learning websites, resources and games at my Learning

Pathway. Go to The Learning Place website: http://education.qld.gov.au/learningplace/

Next, select Middle and then Student Space. Here, type in the access key: L2853485. This will

take you to Weatherley Sensei’s Japanese Pathway. Lots of learning and fun to be had!

Here are links to several of the Hiragana script learning websites we use in class:

Usagi-Chan’s Genki Resource Page: https://www.csus.edu/indiv/s/sheaa/projects/genki/hiragana-

timer.html

Kana Invaders : https://learnjapanesepod.com/kana-invaders/

Online Nihongo : http://www.onlinenihongo.com/

If you own a smart phone or tablet, there are plenty of great, FREE Hiragana (Japanese

script) and Japanese language learning apps.

Any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
