PARENT STUDENT TEACHER CONFERENCES

On Monday, 18 February 7 A-D headed off to Camp Adanac for 3 days in Yarra Junction. Forms 7E-G joined us at camp on Wednesday, 20 February for the remainder of the week. The camp was carefully constructed to provide consolidation and extension of the Transition Program. Students participated in a range of team building activities some of which included raft building, canoeing, thunder hockey, low ropes and hut building. Camp Adanac allowed the students plenty of opportunities to make new friends and develop stronger relationships with their peers. Many of the activities required them to work in groups to problem solve, or relied on the support of their peers to make sure activities ran smoothly and all students felt supported and included. On the first day of each camp, we took the opportunity to conduct our class elections for captains. All mentor teachers were very impressed by the preparation and organisation of students who applied for the role. We had close to 21 students apply and we would like to thank all students who took part. Our successful candidates have formally recognised at our investiture assembly on Wednesday in front of the college. Please join me in congratulating the following students:

7A Carl Petrucci

7B Ella Rauli

7C Jacqueline O’Connor

7D Emma Read

7E Alex Petrucci

7F Aaron Leydon

7G Elijah Magno

Each day was jam packed with lots of activities, however the night times were no different. Miss Anna Stevens organised a trivia night for each camp group. The students were challenged to participate in a variety of activities such as ‘the bottle flip challenge’, cup stacking and even some dance challenges. Both staff and students had a lot of fun and enjoyed answering general knowledge questions. In mentoring last week, we asked the students to reflect on their experience at Adanac, here are some student reviews: “Hands down this camp was one to remember! Food was good, staff were friendly and the scenery was beautiful! I can’t think of a better camp or way to kickstart the year! No matter what happened I kept moving forward with a smile on my face! I’m so ready after that camp! Nothing can stop me!” Elijah Magno (7G) “It was definitely my favourite camp compared to the ones I've been on in the past. Canoeing was a new experience for me and it would be something I would definitely recommend to others. The raft building gave us survival skills and it taught us about what type of knots we needed for different scenarios, it also taught us about weight distribution.” Charlie Bekker (7C)

“When I went on camp, I was nervous and scared but by the end, I had a different opinion. I was put in a cabin with girls from my class and we had so much fun, singing songs, sitting on the couches and other various activities. When we arrived the lake look gross and brown. However, to my surprise my favourite activities were raft building and canoeing. I enjoyed all of the

activities some of them being, the waterside, trampolining, flying fox and the

low ropes. Over all I really enjoyed the whole camp experience.” Ellie Cardwell (7C) Overall, both camp groups did an amazing job. We would like to take the opportunity to recognise students who went above and beyond, the staff really enjoyed getting to know the students and we hope this opportunity has assisted in the transition of our new Year 7s. Miss Elisabeth Collins and I would like to thank the Mentor teachers and other staff who joined the students for their time at camp. Without the enthusiastic involvement of our staff, camps such as this one would not be possible. Priscilla Ryles-Smith, Head of Year 7 Elisabeth Collins, Year 7 Coordinator

On Wednesday, 20 February, the VCE English students were given a rare opportunity to meet and hear from the published author, Cate Kennedy. It was a valuable experience, with students from both Year 11 and 12 gaining insight into the processes of writing and the development of creative ideas. Ms Kennedy spoke to both groups for an hour, answering specific questions and taking the students into the world of creative writing. She was passionate and honest about her writing, and more importantly, generously gave up her time afterwards to speak one on one with the students. We hope that this experience aided their understanding of writing and assisted them in completing their first VCE Outcome for the year. A big thank you to Ms Kennedy, VCE staff and the students who were so respectful throughout the day. “It was a great opportunity for us to ask her questions about her novel such as, the reasons behind her writing, where her inspiration comes from and the impact she wants her stories to have on her readers. Ms Kennedy also advised us on how to enhance our own writing, providing us with tips and strategies to develop a storyline and keep the reader engaged. Overall, it was a great afternoon and many of us walked away with a better understanding of both her novel and creative writing.” Valy – Year 12 “We all have our first English SAC coming up which is based on one of Ms Kennedy’s books, ‘Like a House on Fire’, so this was the perfect opportunity to ask anything we were curious about, or anything we thought would give us an edge. With short and few prompts from us, Ms Kennedy unleashed her endless pool of knowledge to explain and justify parts of her short story collection. She spoke with energy, excitement and eloquence that I’m sure that she sparked motivation and inspiration in more than one of us. She gave us knowledge delivered with passion giving every Year 12 something different to take from this incursion. For me, I found it very interesting to

VCE ENGLISH NEWS

6

hear her describe why she writes. What I took from this is that an artist has incredibly complex feelings on their motivations and their justification for making and publishing their art. To hear an established poet and writer express this wavering conviction is reassuring to me and cements some of my own thoughts and plans for the future. Thank you to the staff for organising this very special visit, it’s been highly beneficial”. Sophia – Year 12 “Amazing. This is the word that comes to mind when I’m asked to describe the Cate Kennedy incursion. For me, it was not only the analytical perspective she offered that was so rewarding, but rather, listening to her recount the sources of which she draws her inspiration. Like many works of fiction, Ms Kennedy revealed that her stories were in fact, based completely on real life events, some of which, were her own. An insight which I found especially interesting was her basis of ‘Laminex and mirrors;’ a short story about a young girl who worked in a hospital. The story ends with the girl sacrificing her job in order to give a dying man a few brief moments of happiness. The reality, however, was that Cate Kennedy, who was the worker in the hospital, never took the risk of helping the man, and has regretted it ever since. To her, writing about it, and changing the ending to what she wished she had done, is a type of way to cope with the otherwise consuming guilt she may have faced. I then had the privilege of staying back after school until 4.20pm to speak to her about the stories, her past, and her outlooks on life. A big thank you to the English faculty for organising such an amazing experience to the cohort, and an even bigger thank you to the lovely Cate Kennedy, for inspiring us all.” Jared – Year 12 Samantha Fox, Head of English

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS’ CRICKET On Tuesday, 26 February, the Intermediate Girls’ Cricket team had a wonderful day's cricket at Silcock Reserve, Croydon. The team spirit and support to all team members, and respect to our opponents was first class, as was noted by parents in attendance. The grand final against Mooroolbark saw us bowl first and restrict the opposition to 8/52 off 20 overs. All 7 bowlers bowled very well:

Elise Prunty 2/8 off 3

Astrid Gardiner 1/2 off 2

Ashleigh Clifford 1/12 off 3

Alicia Pumpa 0/10 off 2

Bella Whelan 0/8 off 2 Our economical openers, Lily Osborn 0/7 off 4 (one maiden) and Jaclyn Bevan 0/5 off 4 (two maidens). In the field, Ashleigh took two great catches and there were four runouts, one of which was by Rachael Hardy with a direct hit from mid on. Natalie Vlahos, Allanah Sebire and Kate Burton all fielded well and supported the bowlers most effectively. When it was our turn to bat, we wasted no time and after 6 overs had accumulated 59 runs to finish the game early. Astrid Gardiner was most impressive and aggressive, scoring 23*(4 fours) in 3 overs. We look forward with enthusiasm to the challenging Eastern Region in Term 4. Congratulations to all the squad for your efforts at training and for winning the 2019 District Premiership.

UGANDAN 100% HOPE CHOIR SET TO PERFORM AT NORWOOD SECONDARY COLLEGE Norwood is one of the fortunate schools to be hosting the 100% hOPE Ugandan Choir next Thursday, 14 March. The concert begins with traditional African ACappella singing, dancing and drumming, leading into more contemporary dance, culminating in head-spinning breakdancing. During the incursion, they share extraordinary stories of survival and answer questions from students about their lives and culture. All of the 10 Ugandan dancers have experienced some form of trauma in their lives. Many of these children have lost both parents to the ravages of AIDS and would otherwise be living on the streets in dire circumstances. The organisation is founded by a Gold Coast school teacher Trishelle Sayuuni in 2011, who now lives in Uganda and oversees all the projects. Watching the group sing, dance and drum, will give our students a chance to reflect on the resilience of these young people who have experienced extreme difficulties. All Year 8 students and all enrolled Music students will be attending the incursion in the Hall - details are on Compass. Funds raised via the $5 entry will go directly to building a school in Uganda.

WHO IS 100% hOPE? 100% hOPE is an Aussie registered charity that partners with the local Ugandan community to provide education and support for children facing profound hardship. Jo Dema, Instrumental Music Coordinator

LIBRARY NEWS

THE NEW LOOK LIBRARY Students and staff returned to the new look Library in 2019, after we underwent a ‘Library Reinvigoration’ at the end of last year. The layout of the Library has completely changed, allowing for new spaces which encourage students to study independently or in groups, explore the collection, research with intention, and find a comfortable place to relax with friends. We were excited to have new paint schemes, mobile shelving and fresh signage which has changed a dated space into a modern and inviting area. The response from students and staff has been overwhelmingly positive, and we have already noticed a greater increase in non-fiction browsing, use of the class space, and interest in different fiction genres. Simple changes have had maximum impact, and we are excited to continue to roll out some new initiatives in 2019. The school Library environment offers our students the chance to foster a love for reading, and feed their curiosity for knowledge, so we are passionate about investing time and thought into this space. Feel free to pop in any time and visit the reinvigorated Library! Kate Atkinson and Kerri Jones, Library Team
