NAIDOC WEEK The theme for NAIDOC Week 2013 is We value the vision: Yirrkala Bark Petitions 1963. With a growing awareness of the distinct cultural histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) peoples, NAIDOC week recognises the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture to Australia’s history, society and the arts. The organising group continues to be known as National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC). This name has become the title for the whole week, not just the day. Each year, a theme is chosen to reflect the important issues and events for NAIDOC Week. Since 2008, Anne Martin and Ben Mitchell have been serving as co-chairs of the National NAIDOC Committee. There will be events advertised in local newspapers.

NAIDOC at School We will be celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) culture, history and achievement this week and next. Classes will be talking about ATSI culture during this week. We will have ASTI themed pencil cases on sale in the first week back to school. We also have three performances in the hall on Wednesday 18 July 2012 from Aboriginal artists. Maluerindi Clan We will have a visit from the Maluerindi Clan tomorrow for the K -2 classes. These hands on workshops will teach the students about traditional Aboriginal dance, art and music and read Dreamtime stories The Beatty Crew Stories, Dance and songs from modern and tradtional ATSI cultures will be presented in an engaging way for our older students next Tuesday.

EMAIL OUTAGE The Department of Education has experienced a computer fault and we have been without email and all our finance programs for 2 days. We are hoping that all will come back online by late Thursday or at the latest Friday. Please accept our apologies if you have been trying to email us and there has been no response.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL‘S PROSE KINDERGARTEN’S LIBRARY LESSON Due to the Kindergarten excursion on Monday 24 June to see ‘Room on the Broom’ at the Concourse, KB, KK, KM and KG will not have library on the Monday and therefore should not bring their library bags. KW, however, will continue their lesson on the Thursday. The library is open each lunchtime for the Kindergarten students to return and borrow books for the holidays.

DOROTHEA MACKELLAR POETRY AWARDS Our school has submitted ten entries for the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards. Students wishing to enter the competition were from our Year 1 to Year 6 grades. The titles of the poems submitted were: ‘The Appearance of Laughter’, ’Dragon’, ‘Wherever the Wind Blows’, ‘My Home’, ‘Ants in the Classroom’, ‘Harold the Pirate’, ‘Where the Wind Blows’, ‘Whenever the Wind Blows-Angel’, ‘Elephants’ and ‘Precious.’ All of the poems were well-structured, used interesting vocabulary and were a pleasure to read. The finalists of the competition will hopefully be announced later in Term 3.

MULTICULTURAL PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION The finals of ‘The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition’ for Northern Sydney will be held next Monday at Hornsby South Public School. The four finalist from our school, Maegan L, Jack S, Ashleigh K and Scarlett Q will compete against twenty-eight students from various schools in one of the two divisions: Years 3 & 4 students and Years 5 & 6 students. The students are required to deliver a prepared speech selected from a list of topics provided by the competition organisers (The Arts Unit and the Multicultural Programs Unit). The students will also be given limited preparation time to deliver an impromptu speech on a topic provided by the adjudicator. This year, a total of 2 132 students entered the competition in Years 3 to 6. We wish our four students the very best in the competition.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE Congratulations to the following students who had completed the challenge last Monday: Laura N, Alaiya M and Craig H. Students have until 23 August to record their books and until 30 August for Mrs Mills to validate the student reading records.

SPORT NOTES YEARS 3—6 The successful sports program for Term 2 will continue in Term 3 with the students continuing to attend SISA sport at school, Macquarie Sports, AFL Friendly Games or PSSA soccer or netball. The payment options are due tomorrow. Our money collecting days are each Tuesday and Friday.

KINDERGARTEN WRITING After reading the book ‘One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab’ KG wrote their own stories. Come to the school office foyer and read their fantastic number stories. You won’t be able to read them without scanning the QR Code. You will need a QR code scanner on your smart phone or tablet. The QR code (Quick Response code) was invented for the automotive industry. Toyota asked their supplier Denso Wave to develop a barcode for safely and easily identifying components. QR generators were originally used in industry. Be-cause of the outstanding error correction performance (they can be read even if up to 30% of the surface is destroyed) and a lot of applications, the QR code quickly made its way around the world.

KG has also used these codes for instructions in literacy groups. The students have found many QR Codes at home and bring them in daily to discover what messages or links to websites they contain.

Scan to read one story by Ally M in KG and come and see some more in the office foyer.

THE ANGEL STATUE Once, there was a war. A destructive war, a war that killed millions of men. This war was many years ago, in me-

dieval times. Watching over this war was a beautiful angel. She had a very gentle soul and was upset by this war.

Back at the battlefield was a destructive time. Swords slashing through earth and man and horse alike. Men

chucking spears. Arrows flying everywhere. Catapults launching rocks on fire. Battering rams sieging castles.

Clangs of swords clashing. And all the angel wanted was peace. So she did something about it. She swooped

down to the field and froze everyone but turned herself into stone on mistake! Now legend has it that whoever

disturbs her slumber will awaken the war, and destroy the world.

BANKING NEWS

Your last School Banking day this Term is Tuesday, 25 June 2013

25 Jun 2013—Gabi H, Vanessa G, Nina Z, Russel E

The Commonwealth Bank School Banking Program Did you know that School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. The school receives $5.00 each time a student makes their first School Banking deposit. In addition the school receives a commission from the bank on every deposit made through the School Banking program.

Taking part in School Banking is easy If your child does not have a Youthsaver account, you can open one at any Commonwealth Bank and there are no forms to fill in! Alternatively, if you are an existing Commonwealth Bank customer with access to NetBank you can apply online.

School Banking Competition There’s still time for your chance to win a $5,000 FAMILY ADVENTURE HOLIDAY!

So far we have 113 student bankers who have qualified for the School Banking competition this Term. If you have only made two deposits this Term, there is still 1 week left for you to be part of this amazing competition.

First prize: $5,000 family holiday to anywhere in Australia with $500 spending money and $5,000 cash for your school.

There are also 25 Runner Up prizes available – these adventure packs are valued at over $700 and include a Wii U, Razor eSpark electric scooter, walkie talkies, night vision goggles and an underwater digital camera.

More details are available at www.commbank.com.au/adventureisland
