Dear Parents / Carers and Friends, So, its the end of the term already! What a busy ten weeks we have had! There have been incursions and excursions, academic and sporting competitions, fundraisers and fabulous teaching and learning across the school. Thank you to the passionate staff here at BPS for making the term so much fun and so productive. Family First Credit Union have recently donated $1200 to our school. We thank them sincerely for this donation as it will enable us to finish off our new sensory / native gardens near the kindergarten rooms. Thank you also to the Mt Victoria/Blackheath RSL Sub-Branch for their recent donation. Christine Curtis has very generously donated four blazers for our school leaders to wear on more formal occasions. The Captains and Vice-Captains look very smart and we thank Christine. The P&C need your help. On Monday night the P&C meeting was held, with seven parents/carers present. Thank you to Morgan Boehringer (President), Justine Brown (Secretary), Alex Ridder (Treasurer), Mel McGrath (Fundraising Coordinator), Christine Curtis (Canteen Manager), Dyani Hoesktra and Sarah Clarke who attended the meeting. Our P&C do a remarkable job in providing the Wholesome Kids Café and raising funds for our students, but the executive and regular attendees cannot do it alone. Please consider donating some of your time to assisting the P&C. When the school is non-operational due to snow, bushfire or an other emergency or weather event, students MUST NOT be brought to school. In our recent closure due to snow, several students were sent to school in the morning. Under Work Health and Safety guidelines, if the school is non-operational NO ONE, staff or students should be on site. We respectfully ask that all families follow these guidelines.

Please ensure you have either signed up for the SkoolBag App or Class Dojo (or both) as these are the official communication channels for the school and this is how the most up-to-date information is disseminated. The P&C also endeavour to update their Facebook page with relevant information as required.

Semester 1 student reports will be sent home this week so please check your child’s school bag.

Term 3 for students commences on Tuesday 13 July.

We wish you a very healthy, safe and happy winter break.

Warm Regards, Kristin Hardge Principal

Dear Parents and Carers, You are warmly invited to attend Blackheath Public School’s annual NAIDOC celebrations on Friday, 25 June 2021, at 9:15am. Our school will acknowledge and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history with a special NAIDOC assembly, led by our students and special guests from our local community. Students will also engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history, through song, games, dance and art as part of the celebrations. Students are invited to wear black or yellow clothing and asked to bring a gold coin donation for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Kind Regards, Mrs McIntosh

WHOLESOME KIDS CAFÉ NEWS

Sydney West Cross Country. Five students from Blackheath Public School recently represented the Blue Mountains at the Sydney West Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek Motorway. Alton F, Joe W, Theo AC, Charlotte M and Vincent H competed against the best long distance runners from schools in the Greater Western Sydney area and achieved some excellent results!Congratulations to Alton F, who finished 5th in the 12/13 Years Boys race and Theo AC who finished 6th in the 8/9 Years Boys race. Both boys have qualified to compete at the PSSA State Championships next month. Good luck boys! Sydney West Orienteering. Last Wednesday, 12 students from our school travelled to Castle Hill Showgrounds to participate in the Sydney West Orienteering Championships. Orienteering is a fun adventure race that combines athletics, geography, maths and problem solving. Using a map, the students had to navigate their way around a course that included bush and parkland. With over 80 students in each race, the competition was fierce, but the Blackheath students did not let this deter them and some excellent results were achieved. Alton F – 1st; Aleitheia C – 2nd ; Ashley C – 4th; Arrow C – 11th; Elliott E – 18th; Elvie H– 25th; Astrid H – 26th; Owen T – 26th; Cody S – 31st; Thomas C – 36th. Wilhelm R and Ruby D also competed but missed a checkpoint so did not record a result. Thank you to Mrs Freeman for her help and encouragement on the day. Sydney West Golf. Thomas C represented the Blue Mountains at the Sydney West Golf Championships on Monday, 21st June. A big congratulations to Thomas, who was not only a great ambassador for our school at this event, but finished 2nd and will now be competing at State level. Best of luck Thomas!

The WKC will NOT be open on Friday 25th June.

We hope that you all have a wonderful & safe holiday.

FRIDAY FUN DAY

Thank you Blackheath families for supporting our Friday Fun Day. A very special thanks to Christine and her team in the canteen for running the sausage sizzle. We had a wonderful time playing games while raising money for our school musical. Your generous support has helped raise $1485.40. The P&C, through the canteen, contributed $300 to the total.

FAMILY FIRST GRANT

Our school was successful in receiving a grant of $1201 from Family First Credit Union. The grant will be put towards native plants and books for the school. Thank you Family First Credit Union for supporting our school.

Special thanks to Liz Hunter for her amazing game board painting.

KISS & DROP / PICK UP

A gentle reminder that all payments MUST be in by the due date on the note. Owing to our Department of Education system we cannot process money that comes in after the closing date. You may find that the online payment may seem to work as this is the bank’s system but the money cannot be processed for that event and will be put into credit for your future use. If finance is an issue PLEASE complete the assistance form BEFORE the due date. You are more than welcome to reimburse us after the date.

Do you throw away your used stamps? If so, please tear off the stamp and bring it to Sue in the school office for donation to the Red Cross. Money raised by the foundation is used to support under-privileged families in Australia

PAYMENTS

NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

It is also important to arrive on time to: -ensure students do not miss out on learning activities scheduled early in the day –help students learn the importance of punctuality and routine –give students time to greet their friends before class –reduce classroom disruption.

IT IS IMPORTANT FOR ALL OF US TO BE AWARE OF AND FOLLOW THE ROAD SAFETY RULES TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN. PLEASE REFER TO THIS LINK FOR

Kiss and Drop/Pick up Zones are designed for your convenience and for your child’s safety. Designed for quick entry and exit, these zones minimise congestion and risk when used properly by all parents and carers. These zones operate under the same conditions as no parking zones, which means you may stop to drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes. You’re required to remain in, or within 3 metres of, your vehicle. Fines do apply.

Hi Parents and Carers and welcome to the end of the first half of the year! We hope you and your children are staying warm and looking

forward to a break as I am sure all of the staff at BPS are…

In thrilling news, our former long time Uniform Officer, and P+C stalwart Justine Brown has accepted the position of Secretary! Thank you Justine! As a reminder, our AGM is coming up in September, and our membership drive continues. Given that at least one of our executive member will be leaving at the end of this year we will need to fill the vacancy, and new members need to have had membership for 60 days to be nominated – so if you have interest and availability please become a member!!!

If the prospect of undertaking a role in the P+C is daunting, then perhaps opt for our new Micro-Positions! Yes, for the low, low price of your time, you can co-opt a small event such as Mother’s Day (hint- you won’t have to do this one until next year!!!) or Father’s Day or the upcoming Disco or an equally happening event and completely make it yours!

CALLING ALL CREW!!!

Do you have an idea for an upbeat and amazing fundraiser? Or perhaps a slow, brooding amazing fundraiser? Whatever it is, we are all ears. And eyes. And hearts. Stuff. Anyway, if you have the right stuff (or left…stuff… if like me you are left-handed and had to go to the Left-handed shop to buy scissors as a kid and never got over it) then contact our amazing Fundraising Co-ordinator Mel McGrath on 0452 217 388. Bands, yarn-bombers, Tuvan throat singers, barnstormers, chocolatiers, jugglers, jump-rope for P+Cers; performers, extreme sportists,, mimes and still-life as artists or just a

humble cake stall at the next pop-up Hemsworth appearance – heck, cold canvas Mike Cannon-Brookes from Atlassian and ask for a cool hunjy mill – we aren’t shy, and neither should you be. We make quarterly contributions fro students facing hardship as well as to all school classes including the Library and the Learning Support unit so if you want your children to get more support then help us out.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

Following our long drawn out and mainly not very nice experience with no-parent-school 2020 we have noticed a general downturn in sales at our canteen, and the current scaffolding snaking across the yard hasn’t helped. We will hopefully be re-opening the afternoon service at the Canteen, but we cannot do this without… VOLUNTEERS!!! Yes, that means YOU!!!

Our Canteen is a social hub and network that provides much needed food and beverages for staff, students and parents; provides a central hub for organising volunteers for events, provides nourishment in the morning for the students who require it through the Breakfast Club programme and provides opportunities for parents to network, socialise and learn just how many slices of cucumber to put on a staff member’s pizza order (Answer: none. Who knew? Not our President, that’s for sure…).

Ok, that’s enough ranting and poor attempts at “humour”. Seriously, we can’t do it without you. Or, we can, but it is much better if we have your help. And if you are somehow reading this, and your child is in Stage 1 or early Stage 2, then really have a think about what you would like to see for your children in their later years at BPS – we are moving on soon, and if you are going to take over, it’s much better that you come now and find out how not to do a couple of things than try and learn it from our Operations Manual after we have shuffled off.

See you at our next meeting (Monday 26th July, in the Library, 6:30 PM)

Yours warmly, and not at all passively

Morgan Boehringer P+C President (aka “Cucumber on Pizza Guy”)
