CLASSIC EMPIRE RECOVERING FROM ABSCESSBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Trainer Mark Casse kept racking his brain in the aftermath of the

Feb. 4 Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (G2) trying to come up with a reason why reigning juvenile male champion Classic Empire put in the most non-competitive outing of his young career.

By the morning of Feb. 7, the Canadian Hall of Fame conditioner could look at the colt's right front foot and have a concrete explanation.

Days after John Oxley's Classic Empire finished a well-beaten third to Irish War Cry in the Holy Bull, a foot abscess was discovered in the son of Pioneerof the Nile, providing his connections a reason—and some relief—as to why the bay colt was agitated and washed out in the post parade and, consequently, never threatened during his seasonal bow.

Casse said that while Classic Empire appeared in good order Sunday after the race, the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner was noticeably off Monday morning and "couldn't walk at all" by that afternoon. X-rays on the foot came back clean and by Tuesday morning, the abscess began to drain before busting wide open Wednesday.

"One thing about this horse is he is very tough. He never gave us any indication, but it's one thing when you're walking and you're jogging at a slow pace. It's another when you're running at 40 miles per

hour," Casse said Thursday. "This is not something that just popped up. It had to have been brewing. I wonder if that's why he got so upset and didn't run better.

"(Jockey) Julien (Leparoux) said he felt okay running but even in the post parade ... he said he was just a bundle of nerves. So honestly, it's a great relief. We knew that his race was too bad to be true. You start grasping at straws to come up with some reason why he ran so bad. Then we got the answer."

The 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull marked the first time Classic Empire was beaten when he actually made it out of the gate in good order. The only other blemish in his six starts came in the Sept. 5 Hopeful Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, where he wheeled at the break and dropped jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.

With an excuse to point to, Casse said all options remain on the table for Classic Empire's next start, including the March 4 $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park.

"Given what we know now, it puts the Fountain of Youth back in the picture," said Casse, who initially said Classic Empire was unlikely to run back at Gulfstream. "I honestly found it hard to believe that he wouldn't like the track. He broke his maiden on a muddy track at Churchill Downs, he won on a fast track at Churchill, he won at Keeneland, and won at Santa Anita Park, so he's not a horse that needs to take his track with him. It all makes a lot more sense now. I know I feel a lot better."

Casse added Classic Empire could return to the track by Feb. 10.

Fellow Eclipse Award-winner Tepin is already back training after suffering a mild bout of colic Feb. 5 that caused her to miss her planned seasonal debut in the Feb. 11 Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes (G3T). Casse said the two-time defending champion turf female could possibly return to the worktab this weekend. BH

QUARANTINE LIFTED ON BARN AT KEENELANDBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

The Kentucky Office of the State Veterinarian re-ports that a quarantine, put in place last month after

horses tested positive for equine herpesvirus type 1, has been lifted on one of two Rice Road barns at Keeneland.

A news release from Rusty Ford, equine programs manager for the Office of the State Veterinarian, said the quarantine was lifted on one of the barns after blood tests and nasal swabs came back negative from all horses in the barn. More than the required 14 days have passed since the quarantine, imposed Jan. 22, was put in place—and each horse in the barn has cleared two full sets of tests.

As for the other barn, test results are expected back Feb. 9 and an update on its status is expected to be issued.

A Turfway Park barn remained under quarantine Feb. 8. While most of the horses in that barn have tested negative for EHV-1, a single horse tested positive in a nasal swab for EHV-1 DNA at a low level. That horse's blood sample was negative and no signs of illness have been detected in the horse.

Ford, in his release, said the quarantine will remain to ensure confidence in the status of the individual horse and the population. Additional samples are scheduled to be collected with results expected Feb. 10. BH

NEW AMERICAN PHAROAH SIBLING ARRIVESBy Claire Novakt @BH_CNovak

The latest in a line of runners with high expecta-tions resting upon their shoulders arrived Feb. 9 at

Summer Wind Farm, when a full brother to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah was born.

Littleprincessemma—the 2015 Kentucky broodmare of the year and a $2.1 million purchase by Summer Wind from the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall 2014 mixed sale consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency on behalf of Zayat Stables—delivered the bay Pioneerof the Nile colt around 1:40 a.m. ET. Mare and foal are both doing well, according to the farm.

The first foal out of Littleprincessemma was the Maimonides winner XiXiXi. She next delivered American Pharoah from her first mating to Pioneerof the Nile. Her third foal is another by Pioneerof the Nile, the grade 1 stakes-placed filly American Cleopatra, who is in training with Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert with an eye on a late-March or early-April return.

Littleprincessemma also has a Pioneerof the Nile 2-year-old colt named Irish Pharaoh, and in 2016 foaled a Tapit filly named Chasing Yesterday.

Bred in Kentucky by Brereton Jones out of the Ecliptical mare Exclusive Rosette, Littleprincessemma is by Yankee Gentleman. Zayat Stables bought her for $250,000 from Woods Edge Farm's consignment to the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale after agent

BATTLE OF MIDWAY TAKES ON FOUR IN SAN VICENTEBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Five maiden winners will look to break through for their first graded score Feb. 12 in the $200,000 San

Battle of Midway, a Smart Strike colt trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, won his six-furlong debut Jan. 21 at Santa Anita by 3 1/4 lengths, while Aquamarine, a Gemologist colt trained by Bob Baffert, took a 5 1/2-furlong try by 1 3/4 lengths. Both wins were over a wet main track.

Kaleem Shah's Iliad won his last start Dec. 18 at Los Alamitos Race Course by 3 1/2 lengths. The Ghostzapper colt is now under the care of trainer Doug O'Neill, who took over when Shah and Baffert parted ways on New Year's Eve.

ENDEAVOUR MAY BE SWAN SONG FOR ISABELLA SINGSBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

The second stage of Isabella Sings' career is already in the works. But before the 5-year-old daughter

of Eskendereya transitions from top-flight runner to broodmare for owner and breeder Siena Farm, she will be given an opportunity to capitalize on the strong form her connections hope she passes on to offspring.

In what could be her racing swan song, Isabella Sings will try to pull off her catch-me-if-you-can routine against 10 other fillies and mares in the $150,000 Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes (G3T) going 1 1/16 miles over the Tampa Bay Downs turf Feb. 11.

With three graded stakes wins already to her credit, including a win in the My Charmer Handicap (G3T) Nov. 26 to cap off her 2016 campaign, Isabella Sings earned the right to have a high-profile first mating when she enters the breeding shed. That date will come this spring, as she is booked to leading Ashford Stud stallion Uncle Mo—but hopefully not before she adds a bit more padding to her resume.

"The plan has always been to bring her back for the early part of this season, but she will be retired this spring and become a mom," said David Pope, president and co-owner of Siena Farm. "We didn't have any plans to send her to the breeding shed early, so we thought we'd try and get two or three more races in and then bring her back.

"You don't want to get ahead of yourself, but we think possibly the Hillsborough (G2T, at Tampa Bay March 11) could be after this. We believe she likes the surface at Tampa. She's training great (and) she's doing well, so we're taking it one race at a time. This could be the last one, but we'll see how it goes."

Isabella Sings began 2017 with a third-place finish in the Marshua's River Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream Park Jan. 14, the latest in a string of consistent results for the chestnut mare.

Beginning with her first graded stakes win in the 2015 Mrs. Revere Stakes (G2T) at Churchill Downs, the Todd Pletcher trainee has only finished worse than third twice in her last nine starts. She nearly pulled off an upset of champion turf female Tepin in last year's Hillsborbough when she jumped out to an 18-length lead at one point only to be reeled in late to finish second by a length.

"I think Todd's team has been the difference there," Pope said. "They've been working with her, getting her to relax and she's doing, I think, incrementally better each race. You can't try and go in there and rate her behind horses. She's not going to go for that. But the patience (Pletcher) has shown is paying off."

Installed as the 5-2 favorite on the morning line, Isabella Sings could face her toughest challenge from a pair of Chad Brown-trained runners in Light in Paris and Elysea's World.

Light in Paris raced just off the pace last time out en route to winning a 1 1/16-mile allowance race over the Tampa Bay turf Jan. 8, while her stablemate—who is cross-entered in the Suwannee River Stakes (G3T) Saturday—enters off a 1 1/4 length allowance victory at Gulfstream Dec. 29. BH

CONQUEST ENFORCER CHASES STAKES DOUBLE FOR LOOOCHBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Conquest Enforcer's first start in Southern California couldn't

have gone much better. With a new ownership group

and under the guidance of trainer Phil D'Amato for the first time, the Into Mischief colt who was a $785,000 purchase by Loooch Racing out of the 2016 Keeneland November sale set the pace, took pressure, and dug in to win the Dec. 26 Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita Park.

"He took that pressure on a fresh turf course that had gotten a lot of rain, and it showed a lot of heart," D'Amato said of Conquest Enforcer's pace—:22.91, :46.11, and 1:10.29 through six furlongs. "Usually, early in the meet, the track plays fair, which made the way he did it even more impressive."

But with the new year comes a new challenge in the $200,000 Arcadia Stakes (G2T) Feb. 11 at Santa Anita.

The 4-year-old bay, who has five wins from eight starts and earnings of $480,640, raced against older horses during his 3-year-old year in 2016, but he lost both starts. Previously trained by Mark Casse, Conquest Enforcer ran third by a neck sprinting in the Nearctic Stakes (G2T) at Woodbine and finished third in the Play the King Stakes (G2T), also at Woodbine.

"We'll find out," D'Amato said of

trying the older-horse turf division in California for the first time. "I'm pretty confident he'll handle it just fine. There are some quality horses in there and he definitely has earned a spot to compete against those horses."

Of the four other entrants for the Arcadia, three are graded winners. The horse in the best form from the group—if you toss out his off-the-board finish in the off-the-turf San Gabriel (G3)—is St. Elias Stable and West Point Thoroughbreds' Ring Weekend.

In his previous grass start, the 6-year-old Tapit gelding just outfinished Vyjack to win the Seabiscuit Handicap (G2T) at Del Mar. Fellow Arcadia entrant What a View finished sixth in the Seabiscuit, but came back from a two-month layoff to run a quality second to graded winner

Ashleyluvssugar in the California Cup Turf Classic Jan. 28.

Returning from an extended layoff is Golden Pegasus Racing and Earle Mack's Bolo, the defending Arcadia champion. In last year's Arcadia, he returned from a nearly identical layoff (his last race was in July in both cases) to win the mile Arcadia by a neck over Obviously. The son of Temple City went winless in three starts after that, though, including a second-place run—3 3/4 lengths back—behind What a View in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1T).

Rounding out the field is Ohio, who has won two allowance races since he made his U.S. debut in March, but he is winless in five starts against graded stakes competition. BH

NASHMIAH TOPS REALLY SPECIAL IN UAE GUINEASBy Tom Hallt @lordatwar

Godolphin's 3-year-old filly Really Special looked to be a lock in

the UAE One Thousand Guineas Sponsored By Al Tayer Motors, possibly giving the hometown stable third consecutive win on the Feb. 9 Meydan card.

The undefeated Britain-bred daughter of Shamardal, trained by Saeed bin Suroor, was an easy three-length winner of the Jan. 19 UAE One Thousand Guineas Trial Sponsored by District One Villas.

However, another undefeated 3-year-old filly blew in on a desert wind to spoil the best-laid plans.

Trained by Nicholas Bachalard for Sons of the late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, the homebred Nashmiah transferred her winning form from King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia—where she won a KSA group 1 in late January—to best 10 other sophomore fillies in the 1,600-meter event over Meydan's dirt surface.

Godolphin's Calare (Dubawi) set the early pace more than halfway through the mile until Nashmiah and jockey Mickael Barzalona passed the tiring leader and led to the wire.

Kentucky-bred Nomorerichblondes (Hard Spun), who finished seventh behind Really Special in the Guineas Trail, gamely challenged Nashmiah near the wire but fell a head short. Britain's Rajar (Archipenko) finished 1 1/2 lengths third, a neck better than Kentucky-bred Complimenti (Congrats). Really Special, who failed to replicate her

Guineas Trial form, finished fifth. The finishing time for the distance was 1:40.75.

Nashmiah's sire Alnajim Althakeb came to Saudi Arabia in utero after Three Roses, representing the foreign interests, paid $800,000 for his dam, Hurry Home Hillary, in foal to Unbridled's Song at the 2005 Keeneland November mixed sale. Hurry Home Hillary, a daughter of Deputed Testamony from the Exclusive Dancer female family, also produced Wood Memorial (G1) winner Bellamy Road (Concerto).

A half sister to Mokarab, who secured the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (KSA-1), Nashmiah is out of Saudi-bred Qereerah. She is by Blue Burner, a product of Florida's Kinsman Stud, who finished second in the Florida Derby (G1) and third in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G1) before being sold to race in Saudi Arabia. Quereerah's dam, Rienroe, is a Caerleon half sister to group 1 winner Flutter Away (Lomond), who took the Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland.

Although Really Special might have disappointed her Godolphin connections, the team-blue boys had to be buoyed by their three winners on the day, two with Kentucky backgrounds.

Britain-bred Top Score—whose roots are firmly planted in Kentucky as a son of Hard Spun out of an Elusive Quality full sister to Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Raven's Pass—took the first Thoroughbred race on the Meydan card, the Meydan Classic Trial on the turf.

Following closely on Top Score's success came Kentucky-bred Alabaster, a 5-year-old son of Medaglia d'Oro—Lady Pegasus, by Fusaichi Pegasus, who scored a neck victory over the dead-heating Etijaah (a Kentucky-bred by Daaher) and Emotionless in a 10-furlong handicap.

Godolphin's 4-year-old Folkswood (Exceed And Excel) closed the card with a two-length win on the turf. BH

VALUE PLUS TO STAND IN BRITISH COLUMBIABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

A British Columbia breeding incentive program and serendipity combined to send graded stakes-pro-

ducing sire Value Plus to Cathy and Steen Reggelsen's Strideaway Thoroughbreds.

The Reggelsens bought the 16-year-old son of Unbridled's Song—Roll Over Baby, by Rollin On Over, for $13,000 through the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale. Prior to the sale, the new owners weren't standing any stallions, which they've been doing with a variety of breeds for 27 years. Then in a gathering of friends ahead of the sale, Value Plus' entry came up in conversation.

"It grew from there," said Cathy Reggelsen. "B.C. is trying to get breeding going again, and (Value Plus) was a racehorse and by Unbridled's Song who is as hot as can be now. There was nothing like him standing in B.C., and he was proven; his progeny have already earned more than $12 million."

The Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (B.C. division) is trying to kick-start its breeding program by reimbursing 50% of the price of any in foal broodmare bought at auction outside the province, up to $10,000.

"Everything seemed to work to our advantage," Reggelsen said. Value Plus will stand for $2,500.

A grade 1-placed stakes winner and track record-holder, Value Plus has sired 220 winners out of nine crops of racing age. He has three black-type stakes winners, led by multiple graded stakes winner Long on Value. BH

NOTIONAL TO STAND IN INDIANABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Grade 2 winner and sire of multiple black-type winners Notional is being relocated to Swifty Farm

near Seymour, Ind., where he'll stand for $2,000.The 13-year-old son of In Excess—Truly Blessed, by

French Deputy, was purchased for $8,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky mixed sale by partners David Bogue, Randy Haffner, and Tommy Wente out of the Rockin Z Ranch dispersal handled by Vinery Sales.

"I was watching this horse when he stood at Spendthrift," said Wente, who owns a farm near Lexington. "When we saw him in the sale, we knew he was a perfect fit for Indiana—the good dirt record and speed. He's a whole lot more valuable than what we paid."

Notional won three graded stakes, including the San Rafael (G2), Risen Star (G3), and the Salvator Mile Handicap (G3). He also finished second in the 2007 Florida Derby (G1). He entered stud at Spendthrift Farm before Dr. Robert Zoellner's Rockin Z Ranch in Oklahoma bought him in 2014.

"One of the advantages with him is the 43 shareholders," Wente said. "Having him closer to Lexington should attract more mares."

Notional has sired 138 winners and six black-type stakes winners to date. His top runner is grade 1-placed stakes winner Far Right, who won the Southwest Stakes (G3) and finished second in the Arkansas Derby (G1). He has earned more than $700,000. BH

IT'S NO JOKE HEADING TO ALBERTABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

When grade 2 winner It's No Joke appeared in the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale catalog,

Canadian breeder Pierre Esquirol saw only potential."I've had this horse on my radar for several years and

made an offer on him at one point, but we couldn't get the deal done," said Esquirol, who owns Esquirol Farms near Edmonton in Alberta. "His statistics from a limited number of mares are really impressive, he really moves his mares up."

It's No Joke, a 15-year-old son of Distorted Humor—It's Personal, by Personal Flag, was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm. He was sold as a yearling by Woods Edge Farm for $675,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale to Fleetwood/NW Management as agent for owner Stan Fulton. It's No Joke won three graded stakes, including the Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (G2), and retired with $685,612 in earnings.

As a sire, It's No Joke has 51 winners from 70 starters out of 94 foals of racing age. His winners include three black-type stakes winners, led by Canadian graded

stakes winner Bear No Joke. His progeny have earned more than $4.4 million to date

and average $63,523 per starter. He most recently stood at HallMarc Stallions at Stonewall Farm Ocala in Florida.

Dr. Don Gibb, acting as agent, bought It's No Joke at Fasig-Tipton for $6,000. The stallion will stand at Esquirol Farm for $2,000. BH

I SPENT IT RELOCATED TO OKLAHOMABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Grade 2 winner I Spent It, who entered stud last year, is being relocated to Merrick Ranches near

Sayre, Okla., where he'll stand for $2,500.The 5-year-old son of Super Saver—Rateeba, by

Sky Mesa, was purchased by Joe Merrick for $22,000 out of the Denali Stud consignment at the Fasig-Tipton February mixed sale.

"I thought this was a rare opportunity to get a good horse," Merrick said from his barn at Sunland Park. "Super Saver had a lot of success with his first crop, and his sire line will fit with a lot of mares in our area."

Merrick said he remembered watching I Spent It win the 2014 Toyota Saratoga Special (G2) in his second start, taking the 6 1/2-furlong stakes by 2 3/4 lengths over future grade 1-placed stakes winner Mr. Z, and eventual graded winners Stanford and Cinco Charlie. I Spent It went on to place in the Hopeful Stakes (G1), overcoming a bad start to finish second to Competitive Edge.

"He is a colt of considerable quality and a much more valuable horse than his sale price would indicate," Merrick said.

I Spent It sold as a 2-year-old for $600,000 to Alex and JoAnn Lieblong. He earned $347,640 for the Lieblongs before injury derailed his racing career. The stallion stood his first season at Ocala Stud. BH

DEEP IMPACT'S GRADED STAKES STREAK ENDSBy Naohiro Goda

Deep Impact, who has dominated as a sire in Japan, failed to have any graded stakes winners in Janu-

ary, ending a streak that included at least one graded winner every month for 23 consecutive months.

The streak lasted from February of 2015 through December of 2016 and was the longest stretch recorded by any sire in Japan. The second-longest was 19 months, owned by Sunday Silence.

Deep Impact's progeny have a quick turn of foot and prefer a fast track, which means January's weather makes it tough on them. The number of dirt races is higher to save grass courses, which are often rated "soft" in January.

Two graded stakes in the first week of February were won by a Tanino Gimlet colt and a son of Manhattan Café.

Makahiki, the 2016 Japanese Derby winner by Deep Impact, is entered in the Feb. 12 Kyoto Kinen (G2). He needs to beat Satono Crown, winner of the Hong Kong

INTERVIEW

TOM MCGREEVY LOVES THE HUNTBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

This week's MarketWatch interview is with Tom McGreevy, bloodstock advisor to Fox Hill

Farms' Rick Porter. In an interview with BloodHorse sales editor Ron Mitchell, McGreevy discusses his working relationship with Porter.

BloodHorse: Mark Taylor said Cinnamon Spice, the $700,000 sale-topper at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale, has "a classic Fox Hill look." What does the typical Fox Hill horse look like?

Tom McGreevy: That Fox Hill look is hard to describe—it is a very balanced, athletic horse. They have to have all the parts that work together to have that great walk.

BH: How hands-on is Rick Porter is the selection process?

TM: He goes to all the sales and knows what he's looking at on the short list. I don't pay much attention when it comes to pedigree. When it comes down to pedigree, Rick knows what he is looking for and what works best for him. And he is very astute about an individual when it comes to conformation. When we start looking at the short list we very seldom disagree on what we want to buy.

BH: How long have you worked together with Rick and what is the key to your relationship?

TM: The first I bought for him was a filly named Zonk in 1999. She went on to become a graded stakes winner. What makes it work is, he lets me do my job. He understands that most of them do not turn out. He respects what I do and I respect what he does. Very seldom do we have a disagreement. He has never in all these years said "Tom, why did you buy this horse? He can't run."

You know that if you buy a lot of horses, there are a bunch of them that aren't going to make it.

BH: How do you approach a sale?TM: It is convenient to use the catalog to

keep track of who you've looked at, but my job is to find the individual. After I find the individual, Victoria Keith does the pedigree work. There have been horses I have liked and Rick has not been crazy about the pedigree, but I say, "We need to take this home" and he raises his hand. Havre de Grace is a good example. She was by a first-year sire Saint Liam and lot of people don't even want to look at first-year sires. There is a prime example of shooting yourself in the foot when you go there with a preconceived notion. They can come from anywhere. If we had passed up Havre de Grace that year we would have missed a Horse of the Year. I love the hunt—to get out there and try to find one. BH
