Pillars of Excellence: PBIS at FCHS

Adorning our school, from the gymnasium to the cafeteria and from the hallways to the classrooms, are beautiful banners of the FCHS Pillars of Excellence, each pillar showing an expectation for behavior at that particular location in the building. The Pillars of Excellence initiative provides students and staff with behavioral expectations articulating the attributes that all Lambkins should exhibit: Acceptance, Pride, Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility.

The entire staff at FCHS recognizes students and adults who exemplify positive behaviors by handing out Clyde Kudos. These coupons are randomly drawn weekly; selected Lambkins are publicly recognized and awarded a prize. Consistent reinforcement of the qualities and behaviors presented by the Pillars of Excellence makes FCHS a place where excellence is not only expected, but is also taught, modeled, and rewarded.

New Policy to Address Unexcused Absences

Consistent attendance in class is the key to school success. A 95% attendance rate has been identified by our district and school as exemplary. Included in the Fort Collins High School “Pillars of Excellence” is an expectation that students will “attend class and arrive on time.” Beginning second semester, several positive attendance initiatives will be implemented through the PBIS committee.

Additionally, campus monitors will be tracking unexcused absences through Synergy. Every two weeks, a list of unexcused absences will be generated. Students who accumulate three or more unexcused absences within that time period will be assigned an hour detention for the third and every subsequent unexcused absence. Students will be personally notified of their detentions by one of the campus monitors. Failure to serve the detention within 48 hours will result in an office referral.

Our goal is to positively impact our school-wide attendance and ultimately student success by creating a more immediate and meaningful response to unexcused absences. Generally speaking, we will assign detentions during lunch or off hours. However, in the event that a student has missed a significant number of class periods, that student may be assigned a ½ day or full day of In School Suspension. Since this is a new policy, the administrative team will be working closely with the campus supervisors, students and staff to make adjustments as the semester progresses. Parent input is valued and welcome as well!

How can you help? Encourage your child to attend school every period, every day. Contact your child’s grade level administrator with questions or concerns about attendance. Excuse your child’s absences within 48 hours and provide documentation if requested. Together we can make a difference!

9th grade attendance : Skip Caddoo, 488-8001

10th grade attendance: Rob Larson, 488-8007

11th grade attendance: Jennifer Roth, 488-8005

12th grade attendance: Joe Ahlbrandt, 488-8004

Tardy Policy Reminder This semester, students will receive three warnings and then be expected to serve a 25 minute detention for the 4th unexcused tardy and every subsequent unexcused tardy. The 25 minute detention is to be served within 24 hours. Failure to serve detention leads to increasing detention time and possible an office referral for insubordination.

Students are considered unexcused tardy when they arrive within the first ten minutes of class. They are expected to get a tardy slip from one of the campus supervisors located in the spine. Worst case scenario, they can go to the KLYDE room; however, campus supervisors are in the halls until ten minutes after the bell rings.

After ten minutes, students are counted as unexcused absent; however, they are still expected to attend class and should be allowed into class after ten minutes without a pass.

Juniors! FCHS and CSU are delighted to offer

you the chance to be part of the Dream Project.

Application Deadline: March 5, 2014

Juniors! FCHS and CSU are delighted to offer you the chance to be part of the Dream Project.

What is the Dream Project? Made up of CSU students, the Dream Project is a mentorship program that works to help Fort Collins-area high school students realize their potential and achieve success after graduation. Its main focus is guiding students through the often daunting task of choosing colleges, filling out applications, completing personal statements, and finding financial aid.

The Dream Project believes that every student has the right to a higher education. CSU students will work with selected FCHS students every week to help them reach their dreams and achieve a college education. Students are encouraged but not required to apply to CSU. The focus is more on finding the right fit for everyone, whether that turns out to be a community college, a small college, or a big public institution. With the help of the Dream Project, high school students see their potential and realize the endless opportunities college life provides. There is no cost at all for this program!

Please contact Ms. Hostetter in the FCHS Career Center for more information about this great program! [email protected]

Parent Tips to Get Your Teen Reading:

Acknowledge your teen’s mature interests. Look for ways to acknowledge the emerging adult in your teens by suggesting some adult reading you think they can handle.

View pleasure reading as a value in itself. Almost anything your youngsters read—including the Sunday comics—helps build reading skills.

Read some books written by teens. Young adult novels can give you valuable insights into the concerns and pressures felt by teenagers. You may find that these books provide a neutral ground on which to talk about sensitive subjects.

Make reading aloud a natural part of family life. Share an article you clipped from the paper , a poem, a letter, or a random page from an encyclopedia—without turning it into a lesson.

Three Easy Steps to Class Registration: Registration for academic classes is well underway for all grades, concluding on March 7th. Tackling the ACTs: The state ACT will be offered to all juniors at Fort Collins High School on the morning of Wednesday, April 23rd. The ACT is an exam with a simple formula: the more you study, the better you score! Test prep booklets are available in the Student Services office, along with Prep Me programs on Naviance. There is no better way to prepare than taking practice tests! Please visit www.actstudent.org for specific information on content and timing.

In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb(kin): The month of March brings stress from standardized testing, Spring sports, and college decisions, to name a few. Join Science Bowl!

Meets on Thursdays 3:00-4:30 pm, Room L207 See Mrs. Morris for more information

Science Knowledge Bowl competition began in 1991 to encourage middle and high school-aged students to take a more active role in science. During the compe-tition, each team, consisting of four students, is quizzed during a fast-paced ques-tion-and-answer format similar to that of the TV game show “Jeopardy.” The stu-dents then earn extra points by tackling more in-depth short-answer questions that are solved by the entire team.

Each school can send two teams made up of 5 members each to our regional com-petition in February and may qualify for state national competitions. For more in-formation go to: www.scied.science.doe.gov/nsbjournal/default.htm

Encourage your student to come and be a part of our team. You need to like sci-ence, math and/or technology. We work hard in Science and play hard, too! Our regional tournament is TBA.

Letters Of Recommendation

Please be sure pick up an instruction sheet and Letter of Recommendation Request Form in the Career Center. These will help you provide your teachers with all the information they need to write a meaningful letter for you. It’s important to allow your teachers at least two weeks advance notice – the more time you give them, the better. Please take the forms to your teacher and ask in person for them to write you a reference.

We ask that you limit your requests to one or two teachers who know you well. Often, colleges only require one teacher recommendation and one counselor recommendation. Letters of recommendation are considered confidential at FCHS – teachers are not required to give you a copy. Your teacher will upload your letter to Naviance, and it will be sent to your colleges with your transcript. Colleges prefer letters which are confidential and which come directly from the school. Please know that teachers will not agree to write a letter for you if they are not comfortable providing a positive one.

Seniors!

Please schedule your senior meeting with your counselor ASAP. During this meeting, you’ll review your progress toward graduation and discuss your plans for the future. If you are planning to attend college, it’s imperative to meet with your counselor – s/he will need to fill out application forms for you, and will probably need to write you a letter a recommendation. Your counselor can also provide a great deal of information about the college application process.

Don’t delay! Counselor schedules are posted outside their doors. Please sign up for a 60-minute appointment at your earliest convenience.

PSD School News Briefs

1. 2012-13 Annual Accountability Report to be Posted on PSD Website Poudre School District’s 2012-13 Annual Accountability Report will be posted on the PSD website (www.psdschools.org) as soon as it’s available. Every year, school districts in Colorado report about their performance to their communities, based on requirements in the No Child Left behind Act. The Annual Accountability Report features summary information regarding PSD's performance, assessment and accountability, teacher quality, finances, demographics and post-secondary readiness. If you would like a paper copy of the Annual Report, please contact PSD Communications at 490-3543 or email [email protected]

2. TCAP Testing Scheduled for March and April PSD students will take the state-mandated Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (TCAP) tests in March and April. The TCAP tests replace the former Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) tests that students have taken in the past and which were based on the old Colorado Model Content Standards. The TCAP tests support school districts as they transition to the new Colorado Academic Standards.

The TCAP assesses the following content areas: math, reading and writing in 3rd – 10th-grades. Science tests will also be given to 5th, 8th and 10th-grade students. According to state law, every Colorado student enrolled in a public school is required to take either the TCAP or CoAlt (alternate assessment).

Parents can prepare their child for these tests in several ways:

Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep. Provide your student with a nourishing breakfast. Schedule appointments or vacations on non-test days. Encourage your child to do their best in school at all times, not just during assessments.

The TCAP assessment is designed to provide a picture of student performance to schools, districts, educators, parents and the community. The data will be used to measure student, school, and district progress toward higher student achievement levels.

For more information about TCAP tests, visit the Colorado Department of Education website.

3. Resumen de las Noticias Escolares
