Windsor Rotary Club President Father Rex & wife Dana Chambers enjoyed the hospitality of PE Peter and Debbie Jochems in their

beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright like home. The food was scrumptious and the company effervescent! At this Party Carolyn and I were

invited by Ardin and Laurie Wright to join a group that was going to Pasadena to see the Rose Parade. Being on our Bucket List we

accepted, even though we would have just returned from visiting Hilary, our daughter and Don her husband in Hartford WI! We

hope to send Kellie some photos of the Rotary International Float for this Newsletter!

RI President Ray Klinginsmith

A Humble Man With a Big Message

by

Judy TeSelle

RI President, Ray Klinginsmith, is a

genuine, down to earth kind of guy. He took time

from his very busy schedule to attend the

President’s luncheon (400+), in his honor, in

Greeley, CO on Friday, January 7, as well as the

Foundation Dinner in Denver Friday evening.

President Klinginsmith is a firm believer in

the principle of “cowboy ethics”; live your life

honestly and you will have nothing for which to be

ashamed; give of yourself freely, expecting

nothing in return, and reap great rewards; the

epitome of ‘Service Above Self’.

A man of the 21st Century, President Klinginsmith is a proponent in the use of the social media as a

conduit to the ‘Gen Y’ population coming up through the Rotary ranks. “The face of Rotary is changing, he

said. We have to keep up with the times. Young people do not wear ties, as a rule, and would rather do a

make-up on an e-meeting than be tied to a weekly luncheon schedule. We

need to encourage them in order to grow as

an organization.”

President Ray delivers his message, not

from the podium, but from the heart as he

paces the stage. A lawyer by profession, he

is a master in the art of persuasion. But

when he speaks of his love of Rotary and

his humble beginnings as an Ambassadorial

Scholar to Africa in 1961, his heart opens

and words of pride tumble forth. He

traveled from New Orleans, 28 days on a

ship, to Africa and has returned many times

to serve the people of his youth. “That is

why New Orleans is such a special place to

convene the Rotary International

Convention as President, he said. I have come full circle.”

Let the Good Times Roll . . . Again ! ! !

Johnstown-Milliken Rotarian, Willie Grauberger, presented President

Klingsmith with a world clock and the casing was made out of beetle kill

wood.

DRFC Mike Tormey and President Klinginsmith visited the Greeley Freight Station Museum while in

town.

A Rotary Convention Expands Your Horizons By PDG Diane Kessel Knight

I’ll never forget my first Rotary International Convention in 1998 in Indianapolis, Indiana. At the opening ceremony, during the presentation of flags of the Rotary world, I heard a country announced that I wasn’t familiar with. I grabbed my program and decided to write down all of the countries I had never heard of…and quickly ran out of room! In that moment, Rotary truly expanded my horizons. Rotary has over 33,000 Rotary Clubs in over 170 countries, so if you want to expand your horizons, just come to the International Convention in New Orleans May 21-25, 2011. While wandering the halls, you will see people in all kinds of native dress. While attending sessions, you will hear the simultaneous translations and the many languages being spoken. While visiting the House of Friendship, you will see projects from all corners of the globe. The plenary sessions are full of incredible speakers from all over the world who either work on behalf of Rotary or whose lives have been touched by Rotary. One speaker at this year’s con-vention, Penny LeGate, is a newscaster from Seattle Washington. Penny has for many years worked with Rotary as a PolioPlus Ambassador, raising both awareness and money in the quest of eradicating Polio once and for all. A devotee of charitable pursuits connected to children, animals and the environment, Penny has travelled to Ethiopia every year since 2002 to raise aware-ness of global health issues. Her charitable missions have also taken her to Ghana, Bolivia and Uganda during this time. She has been on the front lines of the battle against polio and has incredible stories to tell. Penny will expand your horizons. You will be forever changed by what you hear and see in New Orleans, as you will learn so much about what is beyond your own Rotary club and district. You will leave with ideas for your Rotary club that will make it “bigger, better and bolder” as President Ray likes to say. You will leave with new friends from around the world. And you will leave with a great deal of pride that you belong to this worldwide network of Ro-tarians committed to make the world a better place! Remember to register as soon as possible and get your hotel reservation as quickly as possible as well, since the hotels close to the convention center sell out early. Also register for host-ticketed events soon as events such as Host Hospitality sell out quickly. For more information on the convention and how to register, see pp. 4-5 of the convention brochure: http://www.rotarydistrict6980.org/member/files/Rotary2011ConventionBrochure-r.pdf.

Joe Looper, PDG D6270, 1986-7, passed away last night after a battle with cancer. Arch Klumph Society, and the prime mover of World Community Ser-vice for many districts and the Rotary Club of Fort Collins --and so many strong Foundation Pro-jects over the years. His pas-sion was giving. Clinics in Indo-nesia—he and wife, Joan funded personally. A well-known Trans-portation Engineer (big pro-jects1); a Captain in the U.S. Navy, Served in WWII—he will be missed. Funeral will be next Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Fort Collins, time TBA. Wife, Joan Looper, was very much a part of Rotary,

3504 Terry Point Dr, Ft Collins, CO 80524. After the failure to complete the massive 12.5 mile Glenwood Canyon Project along 1-70, Joe’s Engi-neering Company was called to “make it happen.” The Glenwood Canyon project was a network of via-ducts, bridges, and tunnels constructed through an extraordinarily narrow, environmentally sensitive gorge in western Colorado. It’s completion in 1992, marked a milestone in the Nation's transportation history. The project not only connected the final leg of Interstate 70 (I-70), but also it symbolized the completion of the original U.S. interstate highway system. It won over 30 national awards for design and construction.

In the spirit of Christmas the 2011 Rotary District 5440 Annual Conference Planning Committee took time in De-cember to pause and reflect on what has been done and what remains to be done to make the 2011 Rotary District 5440 Annual Conference a HUGE success. So we focused our efforts on testing and verifying the on-line registra-tion process and it works well! It will be available to all Rotarians on January 7th following the RI President’s Luncheon! You will be able to register for the full conference or a la carte. It is to your advantage to register early at a lower cost and for access to the best seats for the Friday night Elvis concert. Tickets will go on sale to the general public after April 12, 2011. Also, District Governor Bryan Cooke is excited to announce that scholarships for new Rotarians, who have never attended an Annual District Conference to attend the 2011 Conference in Greeley, May 12th-14th, will be awarded again this year. The Conference goal is to have one Rotarian from each Rotary Club in the District who has never attended a District Conference to attend their first one in Greeley. If you are a new Rotarian, having joined Rotary within the last 18 months, and are interested in attending the 2011 Annual District Conference, please contact your club president as soon as possible for consideration for the scholarship. Act now, only one per club will be awarded. More information will be distributed to club presidents in the very near future with the de-tailed scholarship criteria. Our thanks are extended to PDG Dave Scriven and the Casper 2010 District Conference Committee for contributing their conference profits to help fund these scholarships. Make it a great day! New Year Celebrated by Casper Rotaract by

Kerstin Ellis

The Rotaract Club of Casper: Young Professionals Network (CYPN), held the 4th annual New Years Eve Don’t Drink and Drive Party at Drake’s Lounge in the Ramada Plaza Riverside. More than 100 guests at-tended the event and many dressed up according to this year’s theme, Casino Royale. The annual party is open to the public and anyone is invited to attend as long as they are willing to help promote responsible drinking. The night featured a DJ and dancing as well as a room full of casino style gambling including a hold-em tour-nament, roulette, and black jack. At $10 per guest, the event is one of the Club’s largest fundraisers. Proceeds are used for Club scholarship, projects, and donations. In honor of the party’s mission to decrease drinking and driving, the Club arranged discounted room rates and in house child care with the Ramada which were offered to all party guests. This year a portion of the pro-ceeds will go to Casper’s Tipsy Taxi program, a partnership between law enforcement, bar owners, and cab companies offering vouchers for free cab rides as part of a program designed to curb drunken driving, to con-tinue to help support responsible drinking throughout the year. Gambling was a new addition this year and the Club is leaning towards making it a regular part of the event. Guests received a voucher for their first buy in which granted them $750 in chips and then paid $5 per addi-tional buy in. “This was our best party yet,” said Kerstin Ellis, president of CYPN. “By adding the gambling this year, we offered several different types of entertainment attracting a much wider demographic. I’m very proud of this event and how it represents our Club and our principles and goals.” The Club also collected donations from members and community businesses which it raffled off throughout the night. Some prizes included an entertainment package featuring a flat screen TV; a sports package with Avalanche Hockey Tickets and gift certificate for dinner in Denver; a package featuring gift certificates and vouchers all around Casper; a spa package with Wyoming Athletic Club massages; and a wine and chocolate package with Donells Candy and a variety of wines. CYPN is a Rotary-sponsored service club including men and women ages 21-40 from the Casper area. The Club’s mission is to provide an opportunity for its members to enhance the knowledge and skills that will as-sist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to pro-mote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of leadership, friendship and service. As a Club and individually, we strive to be a positive resource for the community. In closing, CYPN would like to thank those who donated, volunteered, and attended! You are who made this event a success!
