I have clear memories of a day when I was 8 or 9 years old; I was
shooting basketball in the back yard when I realized that the song
running through my head was a hymn from church. I also realized that
I knew all the words to every stanza. The more I thought about it, the
more I was amazed at how many hymns I seemed to know by heart,
from singing and hearing them at church. C. S. Lewis speaks of how
much truth can be planted in the mind in the form of a story, and that’s just as true of a song.
Colossians 3: 15: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and
admonishing one another”—how?—"in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with
grace in your hearts to the Lord.” There are a number of books that I treasure, but one at the top
of the list, behind only the Bible, is the hymnal. Those hymns capture truths about God and
experiences with God from across the ages of the church, and when we sing them we plant them
in our hearts and those of our children and families. There’s nothing like revisiting a hymn you
love, unless it’s discovering one you didn’t know. Songs are going to be running through your
head—plant the right ones in there, so they build you up instead of leading you astray.
This Sunday morning in Luke 22, we come to the passage in which Jesus observes Passover with
the disciples and institutes the Lord’s Supper. It’s been said that the best way to understand the
Lord’s Supper is simply to do it, and we will, as we consider some truth from Jesus and the
disciples on that Thursday evening in the upper room. In the Lord’s Supper, Jesus has given us a
wonderful gift—don’t miss partaking! On Sunday night in James 5: 19 – 20, we’ll see how James
concludes his letter by addressing the subject of the wanderer—the person who strays from the
faith. This Sunday, worship—don’t wander!
