President’s Report

This year has been a year of successes, changes and challenges. The 2012 season saw a different structure to the fixture. It was dubbed the ‘perfect fixture’ but unfortunately it didn’t quite work out that way, with many clubs only registering one team when it was hoped they would get two. This resulted in many scratch games and bye games. But in true FIDA style, all clubs, coaches and co-ordinators showed that they were extremely flexible and understanding. The season went on and the games that were played, were played in great spirit and with minimal incidents. For this I applaud and thank all clubs for their patience and understanding. There were many highlights this year, including our exhibition game at Etihad Stadium during the half time break at the AFL’s last home and away round (Fathers’ Day). This year we played a North V South game, which provided the opportunity to play in front of an AFL crowd to all our players who normally don’t get a chance to represent their state. A big thank you to Rob Klemm, Darryl Gard, Lew Short and Doug West for coaching the North & South teams and getting their respective teams organised for this game. We were also invited to participate in an AFL9’s exhibition game which was a little challenging for our players, as the game was played a little differently and the teams were mixed with other people outside of FIDA. The main emphasis of the game was to include more female players. But overall to be included in such an initiative is testament to our FIDA competition being recognised and acknowledged in the football community. Our State of Origin game against South Australia was another highlight in our calendar of events. Our Victorian team travelled to South Australia to attempt to make it back to back wins – which they did. We had a side that we felt represented our state and FIDA with the best players within our competition. On behalf of the FIDA community I would like to thank all the players that went to Adelaide and represented their state and FIDA with dignity and respect. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Charles Robinson and Ben Woodland for coaching our team. They did a remarkable job and deserved the respect from the players, and to come out with the victory just capped the day off beautifully. . A Club Forum was conducted at the end of the season where clubs were invited to put forth any recommendations to improve our competition for the future. No major changes were made to our current format for the 2013 season but one thing that was suggested and agreed upon was to have an extra round of footy to stage Semi Finals. Currently we play our 10 rounds of footy then Grand Finals, but next year we will include Semi Finals. This concept was strongly supported by all the clubs that were at the forum. The Executive Committee value feedback and suggestions from co-ordinators, coaches & players and always strive to be open to new ideas that go towards making FIDA enjoyable, supportive and encouraging to everyone involved. So please keep those suggestions coming in. The 2012 season ended on a huge high with a fabulous Grand Final Day. We had five finals games played across 2 grounds. Thank you to the Mazenod Football Club for hosting the games. Andrew Sharpe and his support crew organised teams into their change rooms, scorers and canteen staff. It was a terrific day which showcased how wonderful our competition really is for everyone involved. Congratulations to the winning teams – Division 1 (1sts) Kananook, Division 1 (Res) Kananook, Division 2 (1sts) Mazenod, Division 2 (Res) Mazenod and Division 3 Ferntree Gully. It was great to see the host club win their games – well done Mazenod. Words cannot express the excitement and adulation that was expressed after their wins. Kananook recovered from last year’s Division 1 defeat with two convincing and strong wins – they would have to be the team to beat next year judging on this years’ form. Also I would like to congratulate Ferntree Gully for winning their first Grand Final in their inaugural FIDA year. What a positive start to for the club- well done.

I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge each and every FIDA player that always puts their heart and soul into their club to play their best all year round. The sportsmanship, the spirit and their code of conduct was inspirational and we were all very proud. Congratulations to the Mazenod Panthers Football Club for being nominated and awarded the Diversity Award at the Victorian Government’s 2012 Community Sports and Recreation Award Ceremony. Andrew Sharpe accepted the award on behalf of his club and congratulated not only his players and all those people who help make the FIDA club happen, but also FIDA. It was a very proud moment for Andrew, not to mention FIDA. The Mazenod Panthers received a stunning award plus a $3000 cheque. Andrew and the club overwhelmed the Executive at the Forum meeting by presenting FIDA with a $1500 cheque (half of their award) as a thank you and to help support the competition, and in effect, other clubs. This was an extremely generous donation which took the Executive by surprise. Thank you Andrew and the Mazenod Panthers. On the same night, one our Chadstone Football Club players, Illias Maravas , also won an award under the category of Local Sporting Hero of the Year, from the Highett West Cricket Club. It was great to see one our FIDA players nominated for such a prestigious award and win it. Congratulations Illias, a well deserved award. Peter Ryan (General Manager) & Brett Connell (Vice President) continued having meetings with Michael Daniher (Metropolitan Manager) and Grant Williams (General Manager) from AFL Victoria to help formulate future planning and support for FIDA to ensure its future sustainability, both financially and physically. FIDA is looking to become an Associate Affiliate with AFL Victoria in the future. This affiliation is a very exciting time for FIDA. We are able to access AFL Victoria resources and expertise, we now have out headquarters at VISY Park, Carlton within AFL Vic offices, as well as the opportunity to participate in conferences and forums where FIDA is discussed among other Victorian Football Leagues. This has been a massive change for FIDA which we feel is a very positive step for our future development. We all look forward to working closely with AFL Victoria to help and support FIDA’s growth and sustainability into the future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the VAFA for supporting FIDA for close to 20 years. Our association with them has been a very positive one which has seen FIDA grow into the competition it is today. The VAFA have been strong supporters of our FIDA Golf Day sending by some staff have volunteered their day to help with the organisation of the day – a special thank you to John Robertson and Benny Goodman. Our head office was based at Elsternwick for 5 years where Peter Ryan worked as our General Manager. Having said this, our association with the VAFA still continues at club level, whereby many of our current clubs are connected with their senior clubs – being able to access their grounds and facilities. We look forward to this association continuing and hopefully expanding as we look to develop more clubs in the future. I would like to also acknowledge Bruno Conti (President) and Michael Sholly (CEO) who have been great supporters of FIDA of recent times. Thank you VAFA but this is definitely not good bye! The FIDA Fundraising Committee once again worked extremely hard to make all events huge successes. They worked tirelessly to ensure that the Trivia night, film nights and our End of Year Dinner (which changed venue this year to Windy Hill, Essendon), were successful and lots of fun. The committee work all year round, knocking on doors, writing letters/emails, ringing companies, businesses and organisations. I would like to acknowledge each and every member of the Fundraising Committee and thank them for putting the FIDA name out into the community. It is absolutely inspirational. On behalf of the FIDA Executive and the FIDA community, we would like to sincerely thank Chris, Sandy, Sue, Marie, Trish & Peter (and their families & friends) for all their efforts. We look forward to working with you again next year.

12

At the end of 2012 we received the very sad news of the passing of one of our beloved fundraising committee members, Marie Gross. She battled and recovered from a few bouts of cancer over many years but this latest battle was much too hard to win. Marie was a highly respected member of our committee, but she was also a member of other charities within her community. She was always extremely motivated, positive and enthused about any upcoming FIDA events – never shying away from calling up favours from people she knew to help out in any way. She never liked being in the limelight, but preferred to work behind the scenes. Marie was an original member of our Fundraising Committee, volunteering her time, resources and expertise for close to 9 years. Even though she was extremely unwell, she still worked like a Trojan in August to get our end of year dinner just right. She spent hours putting labels on each auction item and making sure it matched on the bidding sheet. Doing all of this while fighting her illness and in extreme pain. Marie wanted to be there and contribute and no-one was going to tell her she couldn’t. It is this dedication and on-going support that personifies all of our volunteers that give up their time to help make FIDA a better competition and association for our players. We are totally indebted to Marie and all her contributions to FIDA. On behalf of the FIDA Executive Committee, Delegates and Community we thank Marie for all her time and effort that she put into making our Fundraising Committee so successful and a vital part of the FIDA Community. We send our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Marie’s family and thank them for supporting Marie while she worked tirelessly for the good of FIDA. All that knew her and worked with her on the Fundraising Committee miss her dearly, but we also miss our friend. Thank you Marie, your dedication and love of FIDA will live on. The FIDA Golf Day took place, once again, at the Keysborough Golf Club in February. This charity golf day for FIDA is has become a regular fixture among football leagues in Victoria. I would like to acknowledge and thank Jeremy Bourke and the Golf Day Committee for all the work they put into organising this event. Jeremy is the driver of this day and he is very passionate about making this day a huge success. We also had a ‘band of volunteers’ from the VAFA attend to assist with the event, as well as some FIDA Executive members. The FIDA Golf Day is one of our major fundraising events on our calendar that we believe will only get bigger as word is spreading about how great this day really is. It has been a highly successful fundraising year for FIDA. It has been a busy year, as always, but extremely positive. People are taking note of FIDA and what an invaluable program it is to our community, on many levels. During 2012 Peter Ryan announced to the Executive Committee that he would retire from the General Manager’s position on the 29

th January 2013. After almost 5 years in the role, Peter felt that it was time for

someone new to take on the challenges of this position. Peter Maloney, Brett Connell and myself were then handed the task of finding a new administrator for FIDA. Logan Whitaker was by far the standout applicant and he has proven our choice to be spot on. Logan started his new role on December 3rd 2012 and was working in conjunction with Peter for the last 3 weeks before Christmas. In those 3 weeks, Logan has already made a positive difference to our website, making forms and information available through the website and has participated in club interviews with Peter. We welcome Logan to the FIDA family and look forward to working with him as he takes FIDA into the future. I am sure clubs, co-ordinators and players will get to know Logan throughout 2013. Good luck Logan with your new role, we hope you make it your own and have no doubts that FIDA will move forward in a positive way.

Social media made its way into FIDA in 2012 via Facebook. It was an initiative put forward by our younger Executive Members – Charles and Ben and it has been a huge success. FIDA has now become accessible to our players, they are now asking the FIDA Administration questions directly, supporting each other and posting encouraging comments about their club and others. The FIDA Facebook page is strongly monitored by the FIDA Committee and is dedicated to make it is not abused or disrespected by those who use it. The people that are ‘friends of FIDA’ have been amazing and we are very pleased that we have had such a strong and positive response by the FIDA players and community. During last year’s forum it was put forth that the MVP awards ceremony be changed from the Grand Final Day to a day on its own. On August 12

th, we had our FIDA MVP Players’ Function at the North Suburban Club.

All the nominees were invited with their families / partners to this ceremony. The players were awarded their well deserved trophy and were able to socialise with other award winners over finger food. It was a highly successful day and we received lots of positive feedback. Congratulations to all the winners. You were chosen because you demonstrated dignity, respect, support, fair play and great sportsmanship within your club. Well done to you all. FIDA could not possibly be what it is today without YOU. Everyone that is involved with FIDA should give themselves a pat on the back. It is a program that has been developed and supported mainly by volunteers. It is because of your continual support and passion for FIDA, that we are moving forward into the future with a positive outlook. We learn from each year and we all hope the coming year will be bigger and better than the last. Because of your support, flexibility and patience FIDA becomes more supportive, productive and vital for our community - on a number of levels, not just football. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing FIDA Executive Committee. They all share the passion for FIDA and choose to be involved at this level. It is not unusual for them to take time off work to attend meetings on behalf of FIDA, travel long distances to liaise with club officials, attend monthly meetings and attend match days, amongst other commitments. We don’t always get it right, but I believe we are constantly evolving and developing the program. Thank you to Brett Connell, John Candusso, Peter Maloney, Peter Fisher, Jeremy Bourke, Charlie Robinson and Ben Woodland for all their assistance, advice and support throughout the year. They definitely make the President’s job very easy indeed. Our General Manager, Peter Ryan, is our person at the coal face. He is in constant demand from clubs, officials, community members, other sporting codes, sponsors, parents and special schools. His dedication, passion and inspirational commitment to FIDA are unsurpassed by anyone. On behalf of the Executive Committee, I would like to thank Peter for the amazing job he has done in the General Manager’s role. As this is Peter’s final year as our General Manager, I would like to acknowledge all his achievements in developing this role and making it sustainable for the future. Through increasing our player registrations, accessing grants and donations, and supporting our clubs where they required assistance and much more, Peter has done a fantastic job in this role. As you know, Peter is the ‘fore-father’ of FIDA and has been involved for close to 21 years. His passion for footy and making this game accessible to people with an intellectual disability is inspirational. Thank you Peter for all you have done as our General Manager. I am sure you are quite proud of how FIDA has grown to become a highly respected competition with our community, Victoria and to some degree, Australia.

The VAFA Umpires Association has been our major partner in 2012. As part of their Community Access Program, their umpires volunteer their time to officiate our match days at our central venues. Without their support, professionalism and respect for our competition, our match days could not happen as well as they do. Thank you to all the umpires that have participated throughout the season and a special thank you to Tim Sutcliffe for organising and co-ordinating their involvement. Even though Tim has retired from umpiring at the VAFA he has continued to co-ordinate the umpires throughout the season. Thank you Tim for your support and we look forward to having a continual partnership with you in the future. The VAFA Umpires Association also donated a bag of brand new match day footballs to FIDA. We were so overwhelmed by their generosity and support of our competition. It really was such an amazing gesture as they already volunteer their time to umpire our games. Thank you to Luke Holmes (VAFA Umpires Assoc. President) and all the umpires for this generous gift. On behalf of the FIDA Executive, I would like to acknowledge the support of the VAFA, AFL Victoria, Vic Health, the VAFA Umpires Association, Bendigo Bank, Lyon Sportswear and the 5 Point Foundation. Thank you to all the FIDA Community. We have ALL had a great year - congratulations, we should all be proud. Poppie Hatzi FIDA President

General Manager’s Report

As my time as General Manager comes to an end it is difficult do justice to an evaluation of FIDA. Without doubt we are a leader, probably the leader, in organizations providing sporting programs for people with an intellectual disability in Australia and perhaps the world. We provide a competitive season for teams of players with an I D, as opposed to individual sports catered for in the Paralympics, and we have endured for twenty-two years. Very few sports can claim that. To do so as an independent, largely voluntary run, association with minimal financial assistance from government and/or football bodies has been a remarkable achievement. We are obviously proud of our achievements and the following are examples of where our program stands:

To hear from parents saying how much we have changed their son’s or daughter’s life is inspiring.

To see the improvement in a player’s skills and, their self esteem is priceless.

To see such a large crowd (nearly 2,000) at our Grand Final day was humbling.

To attend the Mazenod Panthers’ presentation night and see a crowd of two hundred and fifty people in attendance was amazing. Other clubs can claim similar numbers at their functions.

To see the ability and professionalism of our Big V representative side that played in Adelaide this year was a great indication of what can be achieved by giving people with a disability a chance.

To see the response to our presentation at the AFL Vic forum when our DVD brought a lump to the throat of many was very rewarding.

To have three new clubs start in 2012 is indicative of our continued development.

To assist in the development of programs in the country areas of Albury/Wodonga, Echuca and Warrnambool should lead to an extension of the program throughout Victoria.

To be planning a carnival including South Australia, Western Australia and New South Wales is exciting and hopefully will lead to an AFL funded program for players with a disability throughout Australia.

We have an unbelievably fantastic program thanks to the many people (far too many to name) who have been involved since we started in 1991. If we concentrate on respect the future will be ensured. This includes respect for the players, respect for our brand, respect for club uniforms and respect for the codes of behaviour. Rather sadly we have moved from VAFA headquarters to AFL Vic and we sincerely thank the VAFA for its support over such a long time. To have their support in our formative years enabled us to get our model in place. We also acknowledge the support of the VAFA Umpires Association, the Bendigo Bank (East Malvern), the 5 Point Foundation, Lyon Sportswear, the North Suburban Sports Club and AFL Vic. So too we thank the Fundraising Committee, our many donors and comedian Andrew Startin for making the End of Season Dinner and other activities such a success. Let’s hope FIDA prospers as an independent body providing football for players with an intellectual disability for many, many years to come and although my role will be greatly reduced, I intend to be involved in this great program in its next exciting phase. Thanks for your help and friendship. Peter T Ryan OAM FIDA General Manager

The Association recorded its first surplus since 2009 and a $16,000 turnaround on the previous year.

Income decreased by 18% primarily attributed to the expiry of a 3 year Sporting Grant received from Vic Health. Player Registration fees increased by 9% as a result of increased number of players and improved controls for collecting Player Registration Fees at the commencement of the season.

Player Registration Fees as a percentage of income increased from 32% to 40%, which contributes to improved financial sustainability, when coupled with a reduction in dependency on Fundraising activities.

Expenses decreased by 39% over the prior period. Contributing factors include a) expiry of the

obligations associated with the Vic Health Grant, b) the bi-annual State Game and c) a 19%

increase in Insurance Premiums.

Net cash for the period ending 31 October, 2012 increased by $16,364, and hold cash at bank

of $65,278

The Association's liabilities increased from $3,637 to $12,854 sole attributed to the formal

introduction of Player Behaviour Bonds.

The most important challenge for the Executive Committee and the FIDA Member clubs continues to be

achieving long-term sustainability for the Association. The Association is heavily reliant on short-term income

streams, driven principally by the volunteer network.

The Committee is confident the Association can meet its ongoing commitments, with the support of the

Association’s members, financial contributors and volunteers.
