Welcome to the new Lancing United programme, now edited solely by me! This will probably turn more into a fanzine than a programme as the banter heats up!

As the season comes to a climax, we begin to think about next season and how we can improve things for the players and the club as a whole. If anyone knows any willing sponsors, or just keen individuals who want to get involved then point them in my direction please.

Enjoy the read, and any feedback would be welcome…..

Glenn Souter, Player Manager

Only the 1st team in action last week, with a decent 2-2 home draw over table toppers Bosham FC… Highlights of the game were as follows…

•Turnbull opens the scoring with a screamer after a slide rule pass from Sooty.•Plank gets punished for tackle as Bosham equalise from the spot.•United get a pen of their own as Turnbull grabs a brace.•Bosham salvage a point with last kick of game…#gutted

After the success of the dogs, a date will soon be set for a pre presentation night, night out, probably just a cheap one. Presentation night is set for Saturday 25th May 2013 at Barneys Restaurant and Bar. Tickets are £10 per head which includes food and a grand raffle. Book tickets from your manager, or social secretary, Claire Luke, ASAP!

Training will continue throughout April (7pm start @ Croshaw) with the last session scheduled for Tuesday 30th April 2013 (depending on midweek games).

We will have the usual old v young's game to end the season on the 11th May at Croshaw, Midday kick off followed by a session down the Sussex FA watching the FA Cup Final.

This will be a good way to end the season and a chance for all of the players to have a few beers before heading off for a rest over the summer months before pre season training starts again in July… Remember, come training, or you could end up looking like Cobby!!!!

Match report – 16th March 2013 v Bosham FC @ home

In the 1st episode of the new programme, we look at local youngster, Sam Gunn, who has made the meteoric rise from a spotty 15 year old, to become a spotty 1st team regular over

the past few years.

Learning his trade alongside Sooty, Gunny has become a permanent fixture in the 1st XI, primarily as he doesn’t seem to mind doing Sootys running for him! After making his debut for the ressies a few seasons back away at Lodsworth, Gunny grew in stature and forced his

way into the front side last season, starting at right back and then pushing for a central midfield role as he became more confident and able to influence the game,

Known for his side swept hair, Gunners fancies himself as a bit of a Gym Goer, and although he goes 4 or 5 times a week to lift some weights and “smash” the cardio, Gunny is still

fondly known as “Pencil” amongst his team mates due to his skinny arms and body.

After striking up a “bromance” with Baz over recent months, Gunny is often caught staring lovingly at his idol before, during and after the games, especially in the showers! Does

Gunny swing both ways? The jury is still out, but we are all hoping he finds a girlfriend soon! Good luck “keyboard

warrior”.

Once again United showed a different side to their character as they held the WSFL table toppers to a draw for the 2nd time in 3 weeks after the recent 1-1 draw at Hunston who were top at the time.

This time it was “The Robins” who United took all the way and in hindsight, this was definitely 2 points dropped for United rather than a point gained after leading twice and conceding with the last kick of the match!

On a pudding of a pitch, United started brightly, matching the Bosham runners and playing some half decent football of their own. Turnbull was preferred to Philly up top as United went back to the 4-5-1 formation that has served them well in times of trouble over recent times.

United took a deserved lead on 25 minutes as Chris Turnbull

Netted his 9th goal in 10 games and only 8 starts for the greens. A slide rule pass from Sooty with the outside of the foot set Turnbull free and he finished coolly with his left foot for 1-0 United and a half time lead. Uniteds work rate in the 1st half and disciplined shape had frustrated Bosham who were patient and kept trying to play good football on the boggy pitch. However, United stood firm and the back 4 looked much more solid than in recent weeks. With 25 to play Bosham were handed a lifeline as Plank made a decent tackle in the box, only for the referee to call a tackle from behind

and award a spot kick. The No 9 made no mistake and the game was level. United rallied and with 10 to go got a dubious spot kick of their own that Turnbull converted to make it 2-1 United. Bosham pressed again and just when it looked like United had held out, Bosham hit them with a sucker punch as Brett swivelled and scrambled a cross shot just over the line for 2-2 and a share of the points.

After the game, United manager, Tony Miles commented…

“We were gutted at the end as all 14 lads put in a hell of a shift. However it is a good point against a good side that will be there or thereabouts come the first week in May. We maybe missed a little bit of luck, especially with Greg’s excellent run and shot off the inside of the post. On another day, that may have gone in. However, we now need to show that spirit week in week out for the next 10 games “

Official reserve team sponsorOfficial reserve team sponsorTodays opponents – Upper Beeding FCTodays opponents – Upper Beeding FC

Today we travel the short 5 miles North to the Upper Beeding FC Memorial Playing fields to face our fierce rivals, Upper Beeding FC in the 2nd “El Classico” of the season.

After losing the reverse fixture 0-1 at Croshaw, United will be looking for revenge against a Beeding side who have bounced back from their awful start to the season that looks to have cost them a shot at the title for another season.

Managed by the effervescent Dave Rowland, Beeding have grown in stature over recent years and have proved on many times they can mix it with the best in this league. Blessed with some great talent and a mix of youth and experience, Beeding were many peoples title tip this season, before an early collapse that left them languishing near the basement.

However, the victory at Croshaw certainly kick started Beedings league campaign and they will have a strong say in where the title goes come May 2013 and could easily finish in the top 3 if they have a good run in,

Led on the pitch by Leo Trower, Beeding always give every team a game and try to play football the right way, getting it down, passing and working tirelessly on and off the ball at all times. Recent “El Classico’s” have certainly gone the way of the yellow and blues with United struggling to find the derby form of a few years back when they dominated. However, each of the derby games always throw up some drama, banter and often a surprise hero….Thommo a few years back with a hat trick, Nick Morris in the last game with the solitary goal and on many occasions, Sooty and Leo dragging their teams single handidly to 3 points. Whatever happens, blood, sweat and tears will be given today in order to gain the bragging rights that will last until next season….

Players to watch out for today….Young Joss Knowles looks a real talent and last time out, Gunny and Josh had a great battle in the middle of the park. Steve Alexander is always a big derby day player whilst Sean Pickup also played well in the last derby game. Then there are the stalwarts like Trower, Mitchell and Hare, but the one I feel to watch is Tom West. Good midfield dynamo who is quick, likes a tackle and can play a bit. Lets hope United can shackle him and the other 10 Beeding boys who start today. Good luck to both sides….

With 9 games left to play, Reserve team manager, Chris Copper is planning on nothing less than 20 points from a possible 27, which he feels could put his team in the top 4 come May, and even push them into a promotion place for next season…

After a tricky start to the year, Uncle has brought some decent players in and with the 1st XI squad getting stronger, Uncle has been able to get the best out of the likes of Bart who are not always available week in week out. The arrival of goal machine, John Kilgarriff has been a

real blessing and his goals have been the back bone of recent wins, along with a solid back line with veteran skipper, Mike Richards commanding his troops. Currently sitting in 7th place with 16 points from 11 games, the ressies know that they have a good chance of pushing up the table and with some consistency and determination, promotion is not out of the question. When asked about his side, United legend, Uncle, commented

“I have enjoyed it this year. The likes of Joby, Darren Lewis, Nik Barter and Chris George have been there for me week in week out as has Dave Evans who is a great keeper. I have also been able to add some greater quality going forward and we now have a chance to try and bridge the gap between us and the 1sts. 3rd or 4th is not out of the question…I believe in magic, and I have a feeling these boys are going to pull it off for me.”
