Leader: Let us give thanks to God, praying to God by name and telling everyone we meet what God has done!

People: Sing God songs, belt out the hymns, translate God's wonders into music!

Leader: Honor God's holy name with Hallelujahs; live a happy life!

People: Keep our eyes open for God, watching for God's works, and be alert for signs of God's presence.

Leader: Remember the world of wonders God has made: God's miracles, God's promises; O seed of Abraham, his servant; O child of Jacob, his chosen.

All: Let us all worship and praise God's holy name.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Knowing our weaknesses, Jesus Christ went to the waters of the Jordan River to be baptized by his cousin John. The One who was without sin demonstrated his deep solidarity with us, God's beloved and beautiful people who make mistakes again and again. Let us open our hearts now in Christ’s presence, that the waters of baptism may remind us of God's renewing powers. Amen.

Pastor’s Message

Youth Mission in Nassau, Bahamas

Mission trips have a way of opening our eyes to fresh perspectives on the world, and today at the Stockholder Brunch we have a chance to learn from the experiences of our youth, chaperones and college mentors who traveled to Nassau, Bahamas. As a preview, we’ve compiled an overview of the week based on updates the youth sent us while on the trip.

“We boarded at 8:30 AM and almost took off once . . . twice . . . and then didn’t actually leave O’Hare until 11:45 AM due to difficulties with maintenance and paperwork. . . . Unfortunately, this delay resulted in us missing our connecting flight to Nassau. . . . we are currently writing this from the floor of the Charlotte airport. We’re staying positive and tackling the adventure as we go.” Hannah and Jack

“[NextStep] treated us to a yummy spaghetti dinner and our first night of worship. Tori, the worship singer, had a beautiful voice which made worshiping the lord an awesome experience.” Kayla and Riley

“We were put into three different work groups to help serve the community. One group worked at The All Saints Camp for HIV/AIDS positive residents building a shed or roofing, while another group worked with Pastor Basil, who is basically a celebrity around Nassau due to his hard work within the community. The group working with the pastor is helping add on to a house that will be open to homeless Haitian individuals. The third group worked at a church running a vacation Bible summer camp.” Emily and Carmen

“Spencer’s group’s job for the week was “browning,” which is pretty much scraping a cement mix on a wall to make it more durable and to insulate it. . . . Meanwhile, Brady’s group was on the roof, where they continued to make progress on the already halfway finished project.” Spencer and Brady

“At first our leaders from Next Step were teaching the kids the activities, but now we are teaching and having a good time with them! The VBS is a new program for both us and Next Step, so we are planning and adjusting together..” Megan and Hope

“It’s crazy how small the island is, yet there are almost two whole different worlds on it. . . . All in all it was a good week, but I think we are all ready to sleep in our own beds.” Sadie

Volunteering Opportunities in

Adult Education

Do you have a passion for planning and want to see First Congregational’s adult education programming continue and grow? Committee members are needed to serve on the Adult Education and Spiritual Formation Committee. This ministry provides learning opportunities for study, reflection and questioning about who God is, how God operates in the world and what God desires of us. Adult ed classes are open to all, no matter where you are on your faith journey.

There are minimal meetings called for this vital part of our church life. We are also looking for church members who would be interested in helping with leading discussion groups in the upcoming church year. We are offering some “new and different” programs come fall, and could really use the help.

For questions or for more information, contact Mary Willems (Co-Councilor, Congregational Life) at (920) 730-2882 or Pastor Jane or the church office (920) 733-7393.

Living an Undivided Life

A Fall Retreat at Pilgrim Center October 4–6, 2015

“Living an Undivided Life” is a three-day Circle of Trust retreat, based on the work

of Parker J. Palmer, where we will explore the personal and spiritual touchstones at the center of our spiritual life and work, and the challenges of being whole—and wholehearted—in what we do.

In a confidential, safe space for shared exploration, using the Circle of Trust process, we will explore the personal touchstones that give us meaning and purpose, discover ways to reconnect our inner life with our work and relationships, and develop personal practices that revitalize heart, mind and spirit. The retreat will include opportunities to share personal stories and experiences, poetry and other readings, periods of silence, and time for journaling and individual reflection.

The retreat will be facilitated by Albert Bellg, Barbara Hummel and Rev. Winton Boyd. Early bird rates (before August 15) are $390 for a shared room, $425 for a private room. Following August 15 the rates will be $415 and $450. To register or find out more, go to LifePathGroup.org. Any questions, contact Albert Bellg at [email protected] or (920) 996-0887.

Loving Acceptance Meditation

Group

Wednesdays, 12:15–12:45 PM Upper Lounge

The Loving Acceptance Meditation Group is a weekly, thirty-minute meditation over the lunch hour that focuses on loving acceptance of ourselves, others and the

11

world. It is a practice of "ending the war" with our experience and of discerning our true relationship with the activities and people in our lives. All are welcome—experience with meditation is not required!

Brunch

July 26

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supported the July 12–18 youth mission trip to Nassau, Bahamas, either through the stock sales or through the chili cook-off and silent auction. At the Stockholder Brunch following worship we’ll have yummy pancakes, stories and a slideshow of our trip. This is your chance to ask questions and celebrate all the hard work and dedication our high school students have offered on behalf of the church. Admission to the brunch is complimentary for mission tip stockholders. For non-stockholders, a suggested donation of $5 per person or $20 for a family goes to support the 2016 youth mission trip to Back Bay Mission!

CYF Registration this Fall

Opens August 1

This fall we’re asking that everyone taking part in Children, Youth and Families ministries register online. This helps us in numerous ways, but most importantly, it ensures that we have the contact and health information that will help us in case of emergency.

Please prepare for registration today by ensuring that you have set up

your membership portal account and updated the personal profile information for each member of your family. Instructions for this and a link to the portal are posted on firstcongoappleton.org/read-it-here.

Registration links will become available on August 1 and will be posted on the Children, Youth and Families pages of the website and on the home page (dashboard) of the membership portal.

Selecting Locations for Youth

Mission

How do the high school students choose the locations for their mission trips? The Youth Ministry Team has assembled a rotation of experiences that includes rural, inner-city, reservation and international locations. Generally, we try to follow that rotation.

Page 13: Flowers Online Documents and Information Online … of... · Children of the Heavenly Father Swedish Hymn ... Give us this day our daily bread. ... Grant Us Wisdom to Perceive You

12

Teams (committees) of both students and adults are assembled each year to thoroughly investigate possible locations, assessing them for ministry quality, cost, safety, ability to host a group of our size and theological diversity. Unfortunately (just kidding), our trips are becoming so large that there are only a few locations that can accommodate our group, so we will likely fall into a rotating sequence of four specific locations that we know will be able to serve our needs and with which we can partner long-term.

If you have more questions or interest in attending or serving as an adult mentor on a mission trip, contact Pastor Nick, www.firstcongoappleton.org/contact/Nick%20Hatch.

13

individuals experiencing homelessness are encountered.

Shifts: 7/29: 9:00 PM–7/30 12:00 AM 7/30: 12:00–3:00 AM 7/30: 3:00–6:00 AM

Volunteers are also needed for the Point-In-Time Resource Picnic: Thursday, July 30 10:00 AM–1:00 PM

You can sign up at www.volunteerspot.com/group/247616164055. If you are new to volunteering at this event, please also sign up to attend the volunteer information meeting. The Point-In-Time Count is a statistically reliable count of people experiencing homelessness during a designated one-night period, twice per year statewide. The data collected is reported to the Annual Homelessness Assessment Report that is provided to the US Congress, and is also reported to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

If you have questions concerning the count, please contact Chris Lashock, Homeless Connections Client Services Coordinator. Beth Servais, Homeless Connections Volunteer and Special Events Coordinator, can take your questions about the picnic.

Feed My Starving Children

MobilePack

We had over 40 volunteers from First Congregational at the Feed My Starving

Children packing event July 20–22! During the shift that First Congo sponsored, we packed 33,912 meals=157

boxes=meals for 93 children for one year!

Fundraising continues for this MobilePack. If you’d like to contribute, please indicate FMSC on your check or offering envelope or contribute online at https://fcucc.proclaimcrmonline.com.

Homeless Connections Keeps

Food Costs Low

According to the 2014 annual report from Homeless Connections (formerly the Emergency Shelter of the Fox Valley) food costs for the shelter have dropped from $47,056 in 2010 to $7918 in 2014! They attribute part of this decline in food costs to our E2F program, which began in 2011 under the leadership of Cindi MacSwain and has spread to other churches and organizations throughout the Fox Valley. Also cited as part of the cost reduction are donations and the Ton of Food event.

Our next E2F pan distribution is scheduled for October 18, 2015.

Gratitude for the Prayer Shawl

Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry recently received a word of thanks from Samaritan Counseling Center for 11 First Congo prayer shawls that were presented to counseling clients and new staff members at Samaritan. Here’s an excerpt from the letter quoting one of the clients who received a shawl.

"Christine," . . . said in response to receiving a dark green shawl created by Marge, "I'm going to know when using the prayer shawl that there are people holding me in prayer. I will remember my counselor and the congregation and how much it means to me to have received the shawl. Thank you for taking the time to make these shawls and giving hope to people. It is very much appreciated."

Samaritan Counseling Center, one of our mission partners, was founded at First Congo in 1970 as Appleton Pastoral Counseling Center. The center connects mind and spirit so individuals, families, organizations and communities thrive. Dr. Tom Tatlock currently serves on the center’s board of directors.

An Evening of Fun with ESTHER

July 29, 5:00–8:00 PM Fox River Environmental Educational

Alliance, 1000 N. Ballard Rd., Appleton

Join ESTHER for a picnic and a play, Romeo and Juliet, performed “Renaissance faire-style” by Pastor Steve and Dee Savides! The picnic starts at 5:00 PM and the play begins around 6:30 PM. Bring

lawn chairs and blankets for seating, beer or wine if you choose. Kosher/halal hot dogs, veggie burgers and hamburgers, lemonade, and side dishes are included with a suggested donation of $10 adults, $5 under 12 or $25 family.

Please register online at esther-foxvalley.org/picnicplay or by email [email protected].

In case of rain event will move indoors at the same location.

Volunteer Opportunity!

Jump on the "Band" Wagon!

The Mile of Music Festival (Mile 3) is just around the corner, August 6–9. There are still opportunities for you (or a group of you!) to take part in one of the “funnest” volunteer gigs you might ever have. Feel free to go on the website, mileofmusic.com, and take a look at the myriad of potential “jobs” you might like to take on. If you have specific questions, feel free to e-mail Mary Willems at [email protected]

Many First Congregational members have been spotted enjoying the festival (and other Mile activities throughout the year) and volunteering. Maybe this is your year to join in! Thanks for helping make the music happen.

Administration

Resignation Announcement

Cheryl Stegert, who has served as our Church Administrator for just over five

Page 16: Flowers Online Documents and Information Online … of... · Children of the Heavenly Father Swedish Hymn ... Give us this day our daily bread. ... Grant Us Wisdom to Perceive You

15

years, has announced her resignation effective July 24. Cheryl has served us tirelessly and has our thanks for her service to the church. Moderator Tony Hinden is overseeing the transition as Pastor Steve recovers from his recent medical procedure.

Beautiful Music Challenge

All of us at First Congregational are grateful for the enthusiastic support our organ has received over the past few months. We are pleased to announce that we have surpassed our 150% of goal benchmark in contributions, and although it is never too late to give, the close of the

campaign is coming up on July 31.

The Organ Preservation Fund was started back in October of 2013

with a donation of $10,000 from Sandra Mills. Earlier this year, she proposed the $10,000 matching gift offer to encourage members of the congregation to add their support to this forward-looking initiative. Because of the warm response to this proposal, we now will have over $30,000 in this fund. The question is, how much more can be accomplished by the end of July? Whether your gift is $5.00, $500.00

or even more, each donation has value in helping secure a better future for our lovely pipe organ.

We invite your continued support of First Congregational’s wonderful music ministry with a timely, tax-deductible gift to this fund of cash, appreciated stock or other assets. Please contact church staff or Rick Detienne, Stewardship Co-Councilor, at (920) 731- 7505 for more

information. God bless you,

Your Stewardship Ministry Team

Church Office Hours

While the church is experiencing transition in staff, we are doing our best to maintain regular office hours. However, we anticipate that there will be times when the person manning the main office needs to step away briefly. In these cases, our practice is to lock the office door and set the phone to take messages. We ask for your patience as we make necessary adjustments to attend to the business of the church during this transition.
