First Reading Isaiah 5:1-7

Let me sing for my loved one a love song for his vineyard. My loved one had a

vineyard on a fertile hillside. He dug it, cleared away its stones, planted it with

excellent vines, built a tower inside it, and dug out a wine vat in it. He expected it

to grow good grapes - but it grew rotten grapes. So now, you who live in

Jerusalem, you people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard: What more

was there to do for my vineyard that I haven‟t done for it? When I expected it to

grow good grapes, why did it grow rotten grapes? Now let me tell you what I‟m

doing to my vineyard. I‟m removing its hedge, so it will be destroyed. I‟m

breaking down its walls, so it will be trampled. I‟ll turn it into a ruin; it won‟t be

pruned or hoed, and thorns and thistles will grow up. I will command the clouds

not to rain on it. The vineyard of the LORD of heavenly forces is the house of

Israel, and the people of Judah are the plantings in which God delighted. God

expected justice, but there was bloodshed; righteousness, but there was a cry of

distress!

Jesus said, “Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a

vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a tower. Then

he rented it to tenant farmers and took a trip. When it was time for harvest, he sent

his servants to the tenant farmers to collect his fruit. But the tenant farmers

grabbed his servants. They beat some of them, and some of them they killed.

Some of them they stoned to death. “Again he sent other servants, more than the

first group. They treated them in the same way. “Finally he sent his son to them.

„They will respect my son,‟ he said. “But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they

said to each other, „This is the heir. Come on, let‟s kill him and we‟ll have his

inheritance.‟ They grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

“When the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenant farmers?”

They said, “He will totally destroy those wicked farmers and rent the vineyard to

other tenant farmers who will give him the fruit when it‟s ready.” Jesus said to them,

“Haven‟t you ever read in the scriptures, „The stone that the builders rejected has

become the cornerstone. The Lord has done this, and it‟s amazing in our eyes?’

Therefore, I tell you that God‟s kingdom will be taken away from you and will be

given to a people who produce its fruit. Whoever falls on this stone will be crushed.

And the stone will crush the person it falls on.” Now when the chief priests and the

Pharisees heard the parable, they knew Jesus was talking about them. They were

trying to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, who thought he was a prophet.

OUR BIBLE STUDY SERIES FOR THE FALL continues this Wednesday. Living the Questions 2 (LTQ2) is a 7-week course that will take place from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. on Wednesdays through November 9th. Each class begins with a short DVD featuring leading Bible scholars, followed by discussion. Living the

Questions 2 is a highly-recommended and respected "exploration of progressive Christianity." The series looks at what it really means to be a Christian facing today's modern issues. Parishioner, Richard Simonds, has been part of LTQ2, and applauded it by saying, "This series really gives you something to think about." The Rev. Marianna and Deacon Keith will be the series facilitators. There is a "Bring

Your Own Brown Bag Supper" at 6:15 P.M. for everyone who would like to share a meal before class. The cost is $10 per person for the entire series. Child care provided. Please sign up in Yeoman Hall. Everyone is welcome.

EPISCOPAL CHURCHWOMEN (ECW) EVENING PROGRAM … The ECW will be presenting a program entitled Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus, at our Tuesday evening meeting, October 11th. A representative from the Detroit Institute of Arts will highlight this wonderful Rembrandt Collection. Refreshments will be served at 7:00 P.M. in Yeoman Hall, followed by the program at 7:30. Please be sure to sign up at Sign-Up Central if you plan to attend.

GET YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE TESTED OCTOBER 16 … The Faith Community Nursing Group, which is part of Pastoral Care, will be holding a free walk-in blood pressure clinic Sunday, October 16 from 9:15 to 10:15 in the Lounge.

THE PARTY FOR THE PIPES Dinner/Auction will be held Friday, October 28

to raise funds for the Skinner 705 Organ. The event will begin at 6:00 P.M. at the Assumption Cultural Center, 21800 Marter Rd. in St Clair Shores. Plan on a great night out! The cost is $50 per person and includes open bar, appetizers, dinner, dessert, entertainment, and a silent and live auction. There will be fantastic items to bid on. Invitations have been mailed out. Please note: Returned invitations can be placed in the small, clear container you will find in the Parish Office.

There is a postage paid sign-up form on the sheet, and also a coupon for $10 off any $50 purchase after you get your membership card. The church can earn as much as a 10% rebate on your purchases. Funds raised will support the Choral Scholars.

EYE GLASS COLLECTION . . . Magdalene Hanson is continuing to collect used eyeglasses for her homeland of Liberia. She had taken some glasses with her when she and her husband, Al, visited Liberia this summer. When she met with Dr. Edward B. Guizzie, Consultant Ophthalmologist, head of the J.F.K. Eye

Department, he explained that they are very much needed, as most patients travel long distances to seek eye care but then cannot afford new glasses. Magdalene believes strongly that God has called her to this work. Would you consider donating your used eyeglasses? Please ask your friends and neighbors to join this effort, as well. Please place them in the box in the parish office. Thank you for all the glasses already donated!

THE LITTLE THRIFT SHOP would like you to know that any donations of brown paper bags would be greatly appreciated.

COFFEE HOUR NEEDS YOU! Coffee hour is one of the most important ministries we have at church, but it can't happen without willing volunteers. Please consider whether you yourself or together with your friends, family, group or committee would be willing to host coffee hour for one Sunday in a given month. Do you have a special occasion coming up, such as a birthday or an anniversary to share? If you would like to host, please sign up on the coffee hour sheet at Sign-Up Central in Yeoman Hall.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR TREASURER … Bishop Gibbs, on behalf of the Diocese, has recognized St. Michael's for our continued support of the diocesan ministry. This recognition rightfully goes to the people of St. Michael's who have continuously striven to meet their pledging goals. What a wonderful gift to be recognized by our diocese for our support, especially during these challenging economic times. With this gracious praise in mind, I was reviewing our Church's nine-month budget, and noticed donations made to date were below where they should be. This typically happens during the summer months. Now that Fall is here and many of us are getting back into a regular routine, I am asking that if your pledge got behind this summer to please make an effort to bring it current fairly soon. Our budget is basic without the luxury of excess funds. Our church community rests on all our abilities to financially support the church. I understand that the economy has been poor and that many people have lost employment; therefore I only ask what any of us can do to help. Thank you! Kerry Lewis, Treasurer.
