has come to an end. Make no mistake about it, there is not much time to relax because next season will be here before you know it. Don’t let that good conditioning from this season get away

from you. It is much easier to maintain than it is to recondition. I hope to see everyone at the banquet this year. We will be holding our annual General Membership Meeting at the banquet and I urge you to get involved. We will be voting on a lot of changes for next season so be sure to be there and get your vote in. We are giving out some pretty good incentive deals to get more people to come to the banquet so look for those deals and come on out and party with the Prez.

Just ilke the FTR Presz Says, now that the 2010-2011 season is over, it’s time to start thinking about how to improve on this year and make changes for next season. And, while I have not been on a dirt bike in months , I have been thinking to ideas of how to make FTR magazine

better, enhancing the reader’s experience as well as the interaction between FTR sponsors and businesses.

For instance, if you have your own business or work for an independent contractor, or know someone who does, please contact me about promotion through FTR Magazine. Tell the story

of your business and showcase your product or service. As the publisher, I will write and take the photos for you putting you in front of thousands of

potential (loyal FTR) customers. Plus, your article will be posted online through various social media sites. Or, if you have a problem with something, let your voice be heard. I know there are

people out there who have stories to tell. Recently, I was approached by someone at the Board of Directors meeting about an interview

with Chuck Argentine. Another FTR member gave a few ideas for articles covering vintage bikes and dual sports. I love getting mail so take advantage of the opportunity to address any issues

and vent.Next month, I’m working on a Reader’s Choice Awards survey for the FTR members to vote for

Jenn Sheppard started riding on a three-wheeler at the age of four. She raced hare scrambles and enduros in high school, winning the FTR Enduro Women Championship in 2000-2001. In 2010, she earned a master’s degree in journalism from Syracuse University and

returned to Florida as the editor and publisher of FTR Magazine. She is looking forward to lining up again in the Women A class.

Allen Pearce made a motion that the HS committee accept the 14 sanction requests received for next season. Motion was seconded by Michael Sacco and PASSED.

It was noted that Treasure Coast Trail Riders (TCTR) was not represented at the meeting and may desire to submit a sanction request as well.

Allen Pearce made a motion that the Hare Scrambles Committee request that the Executive Committee accept and put on the schedule a HS sanction request from TCTR, if a request was received from the club by May 1. The motion was seconded by Rocky Gavins and PASSED.

Rule change proposal pertaining to youth class advancement

Purpose: To adjust advancement points required to promote youth “B” riders to the “A” class.

Current Rule:Chapter VIISection C2. For all lowest division classes (Example: Specialty and Displacement C Classes, etc), with the exception of the Golden Master, Women’s, Evo and Youth Classes, when 25 advancement points are accrued, the rider is promoted to the next higher division. All youth B riders will advance when 35 advancement points are accrued. For all other classes, except youth-C riders, the advancement point is at 45 points. When advancement is earned or the points are accrued, at or prior to the first fifty percent (50%) of the proposed and approved season sanctions, the rider is promoted immediately and will then take 90% of the points awarded in the lower class to the higher class. When the points are accrued after 50% or more of the scheduled events have been completed, the rider can remain in the lower class for the remainder of the season and the promotion will take effect at the start of the next competition season. However, riders voluntarily advancing themselves to a higher division after 50% of the scheduled events have been completed will carry no points to the higher division. Points earned in the lower division will remain in the lower division.

Kerri Chambers made a motion to accept the proposal and Jason Chambers Seconded. After a brief discussion a vote was taken and the motion PASSED with none opposed. The rule change will be effective at the next race.

A. Responsibility: To score, officiate and suggest sanctions, schedules, rules and regulations governing all FTR points events.There shall be three committees, one for Enduros, one for Hare Scrambles, and one for Motocross, each with the following make-up.B. It will be each club’s responsibility to appoint and maintain an official representative and alternates. Failure to do so will result in no representationwhen roll call is made at a Competition Committee meeting.

6. Chairman, Referee, Scorekeeper, and Rider Representatives shall be appointed annually during the fourth quarter of each competition year for the following competition year. A minimum of two week’s notice must be given to the general membership prior to the annual appointments for nominations to be made. Nominations shall be submitted to the Executive Committee. Appointments to unfilled committee positions may be made at any time by the Executive Committee.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM INTENTThe Florida Trail Riders has established this scholarship program to provide a means to supplement educational expenses for its members and their dependents. FTR acknowledges that the scholarship will not provide a member with complete reimbursement of educational expenses; however, it may make the difference between someone furthering their education or not being able to attend college or trade school. The FTR scholarship is reliant on the donations of clubs and individuals, so the amount varies from year to year. The minimum amount awarded is $500.00. The scholarship can only be used for actual educational expenses (tuition, books, room and board, laboratory fees, computers, etc.). Receipts must be presented to FTR for payment. Any unused portion will be returned to the FTR general fund.The FTR encourages its members to continue their education and hopes this program will be beneficial.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Must be a FTR member or a dependent of a FTR member. A dependent is anyone the member contributes 50% or more support (step children, fosterchildren, etc.) The FTR member must be a member in good standing at the time of application and at the time of award. Must be in high school or above. Must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average on work attempted (highschool or college). Must be accepted by vocational/technical school or college prior to award.Note: not necessary to be accepted prior to application, but award will not bemade until accepted. May be eligible to receive the scholarship more than once.

SELECTION CRITERIAThe following points system will be used by the Selection Committee to determine the best candidate(s):Academic records/ Test scores 1 – 25 pointsCareer objectives and Goals 1 – 25 pointsExtracurricular activities 1 – 10 pointsFTR Experiences and Involvement with FTR and/or FTR affiliated clubs 1 – 35 pointsCompleteness of application/Overall presentation 1 – 5 points Maximum Score* 100 points*If applicant has received an FTR scholarship before, 5 points for each time the scholarship has been received will be subtracted from the total. More information on what the Selection Committee is looking for in each selection criteria category is available online. Since this is the FTR Scholarship, the largest portion of points is allocated to FTR experiences and involvement. Twenty (20) points will be based upon the applicant’s experiences in FTR, what FTR means to the applicant, and the impact FTR has had on the applicant’s life. Fifteen (15) points are based upon the applicant’s involvement whether in FTR or FTR affiliated clubs. The applicant should provide detailed information on these activities. A listing of how many races the applicant has attended and/or raced is not what these points will be based upon. Completeness of application and overall presentation is worth 5 points. – This criteria category is self-explanatory. It should be noted that the selection committee is inclined to be more favorably impressed with informative paragraphs that exhibit proper grammar and spelling.

USE OF SCHOLARSHIP Can be used for actual educational expenses: i.e., tuition, books, room and board. Computer will be considered an actual expense. Cannot be used for other expenses: i.e., transportation, clothes, etc. Can be used for either vocational/technical school or college. Money shall be paid to the recipient once receipts have been submitted to the FTR Business Manager. Excess shall be returned to the FTR general fund.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE Deadline for applications and supporting documents is June 24. Provide copies of transcripts, test results, and/or report cards. If the applicant is a high school student and cannot provide the appropriate paperwork, then an information form completed by a high school guidance counselor must be submitted. If the applicant is a college student and cannot provide the appropriate paperwork, then an information form completed by a college guidance counselor or admissions office must be submitted. If the applicant is not currently enrolled in school, an information form can be completed by a person in the community that has knowledge of the applicant’s academic abilities. Additional information must be provided to explain the applicant’s situation. Note: If not currently in school, the applicant should have his/her previous school provide the information. Application, forms, and other documentation are to be submitted to the Scholarship Committee Chairman (Jenni Lamb, 4251 Careywood Dr, Melbourne, FL, 32934). The Scholarship Committee Chairman will then mark through all references to applicant names to prevent a bias review and forward copies of the applications to the selection committee for review. The selection committee members evaluate each application and forward their results to the Committee Chairman. All applicants will be notified by mail (or telephone) prior to the Awards Banquet. Award/awards presented at Banquet. Check/checks will be mailed to the recipient after the recipient has submitted receipts. Renewal applications shall include a follow up statement from the applicant as to how the previous scholarship helped.

Glenn Gardner of g2photosmx.com started riding motocross as a kid in 1973. As a teenager, he took up photography until about 1984 when he stopped riding and shooting for close to 20 years.

“I was busy starting a family and business of my own,” Glenn said. “And I was racing road bicycles from 1987 to 2001.”

Around the year 2000, Glenn said his boys, Dillon and Kyle, wanted to start racing dirt bikes. “After riding motocross for a year or so, a friend at the motocross track was telling me about how the atmosphere was out at the FTR Hare Scrambles events,” Glenn said.

So, the boys attended their first Hare Scrambles in Okeechobee sometime in 2002.

“We have been hooked ever since,” Glenn said. “The people we have met along the way have become some of my closest friends.”

And, not only are the Gardners’’ involved - Glenn is married to his wife Elaine - but so is Glenn’s brother and his family, too.

“These last ten years have been the finest in my life so far,” Glenn said.

As for g2photosmx.com, it started for Glenn when he wanted to get a few photos of his kids racing at the FTR events.

“Then, I took a few photos of their friends, and then I felt that I did not want to leave anyone out,” Glenn said.

That’s when he started trying to capture what it’s like out there in the woods - from the people racing to all of the beautiful scenery at the locations we are so fortunate to visit. Now, 52-year-old Glenn is one of the most respected photographers in the industry, in addition to a volunteer.

“Most people know who I am and welcome me to roam freely and capture all the beauty I see,” Glenn said.

In return, Glenn said he “happily” gives away all of his photos to anyone who is interested.

“The way I see it is, it is a pretty good deal for us both,” Glenn said. “I truly am having the time of my life.”

N ineteen-year-old Tommy Hill just started racing five years ago but his first motorcycle memory dates back to his childhood.

“My dad used to take me riding when I was four years old,” Tommy said. “I would sit on the front of his bike and then we kind of got out of it.”

Recently, the Orange City native sat down on a Saturday afternoon before an April hare scrambles and recalled his first bike, “a really junky RM 70 from like 1970 with dually shocks,” Tommy said.After that, he was hooked on racing. “I just got more into it as we went.”For his first race, Tommy signed up in the Beginner class and he lasted two seasons there racing a KX125.“I just did two or three races a year,” he said. “I didn’t really know how to ride it.”That’s when he tried his first four stroke - a KX250F - which, he said, was a lot easier to race. Slowly, he progressed – “it took me a while” - and at the beginning of this year he signed up in the Open B class on a 450.

Florida Gulf Coast University and athlete on the hockey team found a hard time on the 450. “I’m at school all the time and it just was too much,” he said of the 450.So, Tommy picked up another bike, a 300, about halfway through this season. “I’m faster on it,” he said. “And then for hockey I got a trainer and that helped a lot for strength and endurance. Skating is pretty hard”This season, Tommy’s best finishes were two wins and three seconds in 12 races.“The top three guys are fast,” he said. “Everyone’s pretty fast but the top three guys are pretty close and it’s fun.”His voice is easy-going, a reflection of his riding style (just after the start of the race.) “I’m not nervous until I get on the line,” Tommy said. “I’m pretty relaxed just hanging out but once I get on the line, it’s pretty scary. Once the whistle blows, it all goes away.”In Orange City, Tommy said he practices in “tight trails like enduros” on his parent’s nine acres, in addition to thousands of surrounding acres. And that’s how he likes it. He said he prefers the tight woods. “Enduros take a long time and you’re exhausted. I like that,” he said. “It just suits me more but hare scrambles, I like the racing environment of it more.”Soon, once Tommy gets to A class, he’s going to start racing some GNCCs and more enduros. “It would be awesome if I could make it a career,” he said. “It’s kind of a long shot but maybe all the fast guys will drop off the face of the earth but I just do it for the fun of it mostly so.”Still, Tommy knows where he belongs, and it’s not on the motocross track. “I was riding at Pax one day and two of my buddies ended up in the hospital in a matter of like 2 hours,” he said, “and my dad was like, ‘we’re done with motocross,’ so.”

In the offseason, Tommy said he’s looking forward to practicing with one of the fastest off-road racers around. “One of my best friends back home, his cousin married Charlie Mullins so I get to go riding with him,” Tommy said, “so that will be fun.”After talking for a while, Tommy picks up a bit of a northern accent but, rest assured, he is a native Floridian. “I’m always around hockey players,” he said of his accent. “There’s a lot of kids from my team from up there.”More than hockey, Tommy said he likes racing because it’s all about him. “It’s all me and the bike and if I screw up, it’s my fault and if I do well it’s all me,” he said. “In hockey, it’s pretty much somebody else screws up and I played a great game, they ruined it.”

Starting on Row 24, Mike Lafferty won the 61st running of the Alligator Enduro hosted by the Daytona Dirt Riders during Bike Week. Lafferty dropped 19 points, feeling comfortable on the Husaberg, just days after racing the first GNCC of the season; he took the win by 40 seconds over Russell Bobbit. The overall FTR winner Hunter Williams dropped 21 points and Kyle McAfee was second with 22 points.

Jack allen: Too bad for the people who backed out because of the morning rain. Wet land lobsters can be a little intimidating to the out of towners but as Florida riding goes it was EPIC - Joey young: guess I shouldn’t even comment here since I posted a 152 but that was an awesome course DDR. - FRank geRemia: I know we all were a little wet in the morning but the track really was awesome. There was a little bit of an issue with a section with some missing a turn but things like this happen. - danny kiTTell: Great job DDR it was awesome had a fun ride the weather was a little intimidating but you just have to go for it that’s when some of the best times happen. Saturday’s course was 6 miles and Sunday was 11 or so.Haley had an eventful day. It started with the practice lap as we waited and waited for her to come out of the woods. Eventually she slowly rolls in with a bit of a technical issue. Seems someone ran into her while navigating some palmettos and the subsequent fall had wrapped her shifter all the way around backward to the foot peg. First gear was what was available so that made for a long frustrating loop. I shut off her gas, laid the bike down and attempted to straighten it back, with the inevitable "snap" as it was now in two places. I managed to find one for a 450 at Atlantic Moto Sports that worked - disaster averted. The next moment at the starting line we wondered, “Where is Haley?" It seemed she didn't remember I had

laid the bike down so she needed to treat it like it was flooded when starting it. After a mad dash to change the plug by fellow SCTB members, she made it in time for the start. One kick..two kicks..drop into gear and she's off. She rolled through the chicane for the first lap with less than enthusiastic body language. The second lap was a frustrating one as she dumped the bike and couldn't get it restarted. Amanda Richardson was working the event and was nice enough to stop and help Haley get going, but survival was the only thing on her mind. She rolled through

to make two laps and hours later was wishing she could race again to get a better finish. She was the only Junior Girl there this race so first place was hers, but I'm glad she still is not satisfied. After riding the course on Sunday, I'm proud of her for doing two laps...tough stuff.

-The bike started in one kick so I had a good run at the first corner. As we headed for the first double green, a rider in front of me blew the greens and had to circle around so that put me in third out of 12. I was behind (196C) Mark

Zaremskas. I started having some fun by yelling "I'm coming Mark. I'm gonna get you" at him as we wove through the woods. I need to use all the tools at my disposal to pass these guys. Eventually Mark made a mistake and I slid on by

[to take] second. Another few miles and Jorge (the guy who blew the double greens) comes banzai-ing past me with branches sticking out of his bike and the look of a man on a mission ("cough"..sandbagger.."cough") so I'm third. This race I told my self I wasn't going to make the big mistake. After burying the bike in the bushes at Apollo and the mud hole at the Benefit race, I was going to ride within my limits. My old KTM turns like a tractor and all those deep sand corners are causing me fits. Three-quarters of the way through the first lap on a long run of sand whoops, a Yamaha

passed me (325C Frank Gamperl) so I was fourth as we roll through the chicane. I was worried after the practice lap as I thought it had cost me too much energy. The course was tough, sandy and the temp was coming up. To be in 4th at this point was better than I expected. Soon after I managed to lose the tip to my Camelbak. The water was running down my leg. I tried to drink as much as I could and hope for the best. I was tired and dropping the bike third times on the second

lap just proved that to me. I’m leaning up on the bars and hoping every time I hang a right that it’s the corner that leads out to the finish. I’m really worried that if I drop it again, that’s it. Then I see the checkers! I ended up fourth on a course

I just wanted to survive and brought home some wood so I’m happy. The bike and I made it through in one piece and we’re looking forward to firmer ground at Gatorback! - Troy STainbrook

ChipleyTROy STAINbROOk: Haley and I are both new to the

MX portions of the course. Taking a lesson at

Sunshine MX track a few weeks ago helped ease

some of the fear, but there’s no experience like

racing it. Haley race started well as she wasn’t last

into the first corner and due to Zoe spinning out on

the MX course, she had the lead for a bit. The first

lap was uneventful as she was one minute behind

the leader. Second lap she had an issue with an

off-camber hill with a tree involved that required

a redo. She became more comfortable with the

MX track over the last few laps which led to much

fun on course. When the checker’s came out she

had done 4 laps with no major issues and her

confidence definitely benefited.

Haley and I made the journey up to this race in a far away land aka Chipley Florida - a 6-hour drive - and hosted by the Tallahassee Trail Riders. The race consists of mostly flat and flowing woods with a small endurocross section. Conditions were very dry with Saturday’s course being 8 miles and Sunday 12.

Haley was a quiet bundle of nerves as the horn went off. She was midpack at the first corner and spent the first mile keeping fellow Junior Girls competitor Zoe Steindl (5G) in sight. Dust was a struggle for all competitors over the weekend as Haley soon found out. In her fervor to keep the leader in view she blew a corner in the dusty conditions and buried her bike in the woods. After much vine entangled angst, a sympathetic rider helped to get her back on track (Thanks Gina Harp!) She managed to navigate the endurocross section with little drama and get the first lap under her belt. The second lap got better as she actually ran a better time than Zoe, who was having rear brake issues, and completed three laps in 90

minutes, only be 8 minutes behind the leader at the end. This was Haley’s last race of the year - HS #15 interferes with the 8th Grade Dance - so she is left with the drive to continue getting faster and the agonizingly long wait until next season.

- When Sunday rolled around, it was obvious my plan to travel to this far away race to get an easier chance at wood was derailed. Seems 16 other Senior C guys had the same idea as our line was full and some folks had to duck under bars to get to their bikes. I got a good start and was fourth to the first corner. Not 100-yards in and the white-out dust conditions were in full force. I was behind a slower rider but the first few miles was so dusty that it was follow the leader. Once we broke into the first clear-cut section, I made the pass and was up to third. First and second were nowhere to be seen so I actually had a clear view. Soon enough a Georgia ringer Trey Bordelon (957C) came by like I was tied to a tree. So fourth place it is as I’m wondering who’s coming next. I’m riding as fast as I can when Kevin Vaughan (15C) comes around and I’m wondering what my problem is. Are these guys getting faster or am I getting slower? I see Kevin picking his bike up at the end of the straight right after the boat jump and my question is answered as I pass him back - slow and steady is my motto! Boat jump you asked? Seems the middle of the woods was the perfect place to dump a v-hulled boat years ago and TTR was able to flip it upside down, add some dirt for a ramp and voila - boat jump. I liked the hay bales stacked around the still attached outboard - safety first! I manage to not embarrass myself too badly the first lap and roll through in fourth. Not long after a faster rider on a Honda 4-stroke comes up fast and I let him by. I’m riding along and by comes Mark Z. (196C) with a “Hi Troy” and a nice view of that Tom Flemming suspension slowly pulling away from me. I’m not letting this pass go by unchallenged so I try and stay on his tail for a while. This was working until Mike Belle let me pass only to watch me smack a tree right before a double green and catch myself before hitting another. I’m laughing as I’m picking up the bike and Mike passes me back. Not long after, I yell to Mike “Let’s try this again,” and I’m by for good but Mark is gone. Soon, I see the Honda ahead kicking his stalled bike at the end of a straight. I’ll take that spot back and I roll through the scoring chicane to end the second lap. Just before the halfway point I see new guy Mac Hennage (427C) behind me. What is with all these fast guys showing up lately? Smart money would have been to let him pass and use him to pull me along towards the front, but no, I have to get racy. A left hand sweeper is my demise as the rear steps out and high sides me off the bike. Mac asks, “Are you okay?” as I grunted “Yeah,” and try to get rolling again. I’m kicking the bike and can feel my groin muscle pop followed by intense pain. Let’s hope I don’t have to start this again as the leg is useless now. I’m in survival mode but as long as I don’t have to put that foot on the ground I’ll be okay. How much worse could it get right? Half-mile later I find out. I’m down shifting for a corner and the next thing I know I feel something missing - my shifter! Seems the bolt had snapped and now I’m stuck in first gear. Second wouldn’t have been too bad, but first? I tried revving it up in the straights and pulling the clutch in but that didn’t work to well. I just wrung it’s neck for four to five miles, rolled the whoops and waited for the next guy to pass me. Soon it was Adam Nix (20C), my arch nemesis from last race, rolling by with a wave of the hand. The scoring chicane finally comes into view and I roll through in seventh. I had Haley hold the bike so I could start it standing up as we rode away realizing that even a day with sore body parts and missing bike parts is still a pretty darn good day! That was my goal today... - Robbie caRsTens: I was on a mission and left everything out there in the last section!! - david FRancis: Nearly 650 miles if you include the “Enduro Miles.” Was I tired? You bet, but I had a big smile on my face after a very enjoyable “Iron Man” day, I don’t even know where I finished! - Thomas mcginiTy: For me, Enduros are often more fun once the pain quits doing the talking somewhere around Wednesday. Then by Friday, we’re ready for another dose.
