The Editor’s BeatI knew when

someone called about

advertising in the magazine what I was going to write for this article. I was reminded of the stories I used to write for FTR Magazine as a teenager:

Hot Notes was my article that described “What’s Hot and What’s Not” at the races. (This was before Paris Hilton, too.) My report was a hit and basically lead me to journalism as a career. I started writing around the same time my dad bought me my first bike: a Honda ATC 70. My mom wasn’t thrilled, but I was hooked. He even installed a twist throttle to relieve my thumb. I loved it. I learned how to clutch on a Suzuki DS 80, a hand-me-down from a family friend, and rode that thing to the ground. It wasn’t until Santa brought a brand new XR100 that my mom realized I was going to be a racer. At first, when I signed up in the Beginning 1 class at the age of 13, I was slow. But I learned, slowly. My next bike, a KX100, got killer holeshots, but I wadded up every time in the first turn chaos. It made for some great pictures.

In high school, I got bumped to Women B and couldn’t wait to race on Sunday with my dad a few rows ahead in Super Senior A. Then he started passing me on the second lap and I had to pick it up. I battled hard with Samantha Broderick for the championship in 2001. She won. We got promoted to A, and that’s when the real fun began. I was racing against women who could beat my dad! Jenni Lamb and Sam’s mom, Debbie, were tough to keep in sight. Throw in the occasional April Hodges or Beth Rewis, and we had ourselves a race!

I had a lot of fun at the hare scrambles and I did pretty well at the enduros, too. The best part, though, was after the race, driving home dirty, and feeling like I was a part of something special.

Now, in my mid-20s, I know what FTR really stands for: it’s working two days straight at Croom OHV park putting logs together to help the road drain, or cutting trail at Ed Bull’s Ranch that was even too tight for an enduro; it’s spending weekends surrounded by cow patties and race gas and trying to explain all the cuts and scrapes to my friends at school on Monday!

When I heard FTR was hiring for a magazine editor and

I was just about to graduate with my master’s degree in magazine journalism from Syracuse University, I had to apply.

Now, I want more memories. FTR taught me the importance of family, the value of tough competition, the blasts of victory and how to lose gracefully. Above all, I know what it’s like to reach my dreams. I want this magazine to bring us together, from motocross to hare scrambles quads and enduro riders. The world is changing, but the sport’s still the same. It’s brutal and that’s why we can’t live without it. We all share the same passion and will even go without a few things just so we can race. The members should not go without FTR Magazine. I look forward to getting back out there, trying some of the new tracks on the schedule, meeting new club members and reuniting with old friends. I am always open to your suggestions, advice, rants or raves. Braaap!

The Prez Sez “A New Season”

The 2010/2011 season is well underway. We’ve already had two enduros, two hare scrambles, and three MX. It may be too soon to tell how this season will do attendance wise, but I’m sure the racing will be just as good as always. And what better way to spend the weekend. Whether you are a racer, a support crew person, or a spectator, the friendships and great family times at the races will continue to make FTR events the greatest off-road events in the state of Florida. I look forward to another great season and I hope you are looking forward to it, too.

Many changes in officials have taken place for this season. All three committee chairmen are new. Mike Belle is H/S Chairman, Peter Magee is Enduro Chairman, and Ken Kloza is MX Chairman. We’ve hired a new magazine editor, Jenn Sheppard, who will get us back on schedule with the magazine. This issue is the first one for her to put together for us. I’m sure she will welcome any pictures or articles you may send her for the magazine. We’ve also hired a new hare scramble scorekeeper, Tim Nordle. If you get a chance to talk to any of these people, be sure to let them know how much we appreciate their willingness to take on these positions. In addition, we should be hiring a new business manager by next month. And more changes will be coming as we elect new geographic area directors (Board of Directors members), the President and the Secretary.

This month’s magazine will have the ballot for this year’s election. This organization is only as good as those who are elected to run it. Please give careful consideration to those running for office and vote for those you think will do the best job for FTR. If you don’t know the candidates, please take the time to find out about them and make an informed decision. Your vote is important! Don’t leave it up to others to make the decision for you.

I would like to personally thank our previous season’s Competition Committee Chairpersons for the tremendous work they have done. Not only have they spent countless hours dealing with their series, but have also spent countless hours helping to guide FTR as members of the Executive Committee. Thanks to Joe Steidl, H/S Committee Chairman, George Tolson, Enduro Committee Chairman,

and Carol Preston, MX Committee Chairwoman.

A special thanks goes to Tiffany St. John, our Secretary. Tiffany, who has decided not to run for re-election this year, has given FTR several years of largely thankless efforts as FTR Secretary. When Dan George decided not to stay on as Business Manager this year, Tiffany really stepped it up and took over many jobs Dan was doing. I really appreciate her and the work she has done for FTR.

FTR is a great organization because it has a lot of people who care. We don’t always agree on the issues, but we can still be friends and continue to support the organization that provides us the opportunity to continue racing. As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

See you at the races.Your President,Allen PearceGolden Master class 7B

Welcome, Hare ScramblersMike Belle | [email protected]

With two cancelled or postponed races to start off this season, it has been a slow start. Our first race was scheduled as an FTR benefit race at Gatorback and had to be cancelled when permission to use some of the adjacent property was withdrawn. This situation may prevent us from ever using Gatorback again as a hare scramble venue. However, at this time there is still some possibility of using a different piece of property that is adjacent to the track to come up with a viable amount of trail for a hare scramble. Keep your fingers crossed, but it is a possibility we won’t be back there in the near future. The Big Scrub Trail Riders also have a race on the schedule at Gatorback in May, and if the situation there does not change they may need to find a different location for their sanctioned race as well.

The second scheduled race was the Apollo race at Samsula. That race had to be postponed due to parts of the property being underwater. The race has now been rescheduled and is on the calendar for December 18-19 at the same location.

The rules have been changed concerning how many hare scrambles are allowed on the schedule for a season. In the past there was a maximum of 14 races allowed in a season. The new rule allows 15 races, as long as one of them is an FTR benefit race. The board of directors originally approved 15 sanctions for this season including two benefit races. After losing Hare Scramble #1 at Gatorback, and Apollo

being rescheduled, we currently have 14 races on the schedule. However, I am looking into rescheduling the lost Gatorback benefit race to a different location in the spring, or offering a club a second sanction to try to keep the schedule full with 15 races.

We did finally get the season kicked off with a great race sponsored by the River City Dirt Riders at the Lake City Motorsports Park on Sept. 25-25. The RCDR crew did a great job at putting in some nice woods trail to compliment the MX track, and did a great job hosting the event. The weather couldn’t have been much better for this time of year. The open areas of the track were a little dry and

dusty on Saturday, but an overnight drizzle watered the entire track to perfection for the Sunday races.

We have a great season ahead of us with lots of great events on the schedule. Many thanks to all of the great FTR affiliated clubs throughout the state for all they do in making our events possible. If you are not already a member of a club, please find one in your area to join and participate in. That is the only way you will ever get the most enjoyment out of this sport.

See you at the races!Mike BelleHS Committee Chairman

The November issue will feature

interviews and photos!

Hello, my name is Ken Kloza and I will be the FTR MX Chairperson for the current season. I was the FTR MX Scorekeeper last season. I raced MX in the early ’70s until I was 14. My son, Frankie, has been racing for the past 10 years. He has been racing FTR MX for the past 5 years. Two years ago, I ended my retirement from MX and got back on a bike after 33 years. I may not be fast, but I’m having a blast. This season my wife, Sandi, wanted to give it a try. On race day, she’s the one out there on the utility quad giving it all she’s, or the bike’s, got. She’s having a great time and says “riding beats hanging out in the camper cleaning and cooking for the boys over the weekend.” So MX moms, grab that old quad out of the back yard and you can do it, too.

First and foremost, I want to thank Carol Preston, last year’s MX Chairperson, for the awesome job she’s done organizing our riders and races. She has been truly dedicated to FTR MX and ran a smooth-running program. Also, she continues to help the MX Committee and keeping FTR MX on track.

Your motocross committee for the 2010-2011 season is: Sandy Moss, Scorekeeper. Sandy is from Orlando and was the Specialty C and Women’s Rider Rep last year. Brian Hayes from Rockledge Florida, MX Referee. Last year, Brian was the Associate MX Referee. Currently, since our Associate MX Referee has resigned, Carol Preston has temporarily taken that position – what dedication! Greg Hollenback, C Rider Rep. Greg is from Orlando and was the C Rider Rep last year. Ray Spudeck, Specialty C

and Women Rider Rep. Ray is from Tallahassee and usually attends all FTR MX events with his wife, Patty. Dwayne Springer, Quad Rider Rep. Dwayne is from Fellsmere and has been racing quads for eons and has won many championships. He was the Quad Rider Rep last year and is joined at the track by his sons Dwayne Jr. and Devin, 721. Tommy Thompson, AA/AB Rider Rep. Tommy won several MX classes last year and was the FTR MX Overall Points winner for 2009-2010. John “Boots” Stelling, Specialty A/B Rider Rep. John is from Apopka and has been racing MX forever. He’s joined at the track by his son Gage, a 65 rider, and wife, Jackie.

The MX Committee is a good bunch. Many of us have been with FTR and on the MX Committee for several years. You are always welcome to our meetings, or just to hang out. MX does have its own issues and we welcome your opinions. You can always find us around the track.

The first three races this season have gone well. As in the past, our first event was faced with weather challenges, however we completed the first set of motos, plus some, before the skies opened up. Thundercross was put in the books. Bartow showed us a new track design with a nice Supercross section. A few people I talked to were

intimidated by it, but as the day went on, they loved it. Bithlo reversed direction on us and added some new jumps. The notorious deep “outback” was still there and was fun for the people that navigate fast through that stuff. I seem to taste it at every Bithlo race. All in all, our season is off to a good start.

At this time, FTR MX is facing some scheduling challenges, please be sure to check the FTR Forum and schedule prior to an event.

- Ken Kloza

NEW RULES YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS YEARThe rules regarding how your overall score is calculated have been changed. This means, in a 10-race series, your top 8 scores, or 80

percent, will count toward your overall score. In the past, 70 percent of your series best scores or your top 7 scores counted toward your

overall score.

FTR now offers a one-day FTR MX race membership. Non-FTR members who would like to try up to two FTR races can so without

purchasing a full membership. A one-day race membership is $15.00 at each event and can be purchased twice throughout the season.

Tell your non-FTR MX friends to join us at your local track.

Well, as expected, the FTR Enduro Season is off to a wonderful start already this year! We’ve now have two Enduros under our belt and I would say that we have a ton of smiles out there on the faces of the folks who came out and enjoyed all of the fruits of the club’s labor! We kicked off our competition season this year, as in years past, with Big Scrub Trail Riders’ event at the Lochloosa Wildlife Management Area, just north of Cross Creek, Florida. The only difference this year is that God saw fit to smile down on Big Scrub Trail Riders and allow for absolute perfect weather! This year’s event was awesome. All of the racers got to see exactly what the trail looked like the week before the event, when the club was laboriously laying it out. Thank you, Lord, for the gift of wonderful weather. The racers were treat-ed to a 33-mile loop and they set out to make two laps on this lovely, yet challenging, course. I spoke with a few racers at the 23-mile restart and they said that the trail was great and that the tight, sandy section was a challenge. I spoke with the same racers at the same restart, on the second time around the loop, and they said that the tight, twisty’s, this time almost killed them! [laughs] Thank you to everyone who came out and

made the first race of the season a huge success.

We then moved on to a very different terrain in Clinton, South Carolina for our second event of the year. Once again, we were blessed with won-derful weather and I must say that the trail was just as beautiful, rocky and rooty as it always is! I took off on Row 11 and there was a bit of dust, but not more than one could handle I attacked the trail as I always do, wielding my trusty KTM Steed like an axe at the fast, rooty and rocky trail. Three miles into the first section, the trail decided that it was the axe and not my steed, and it lashed out and flattened my rear tire like a worn out party balloon. I made the split-second decision to pour on the gas and see if I could shred the rear tire by the time I reached the out check. Fortunately, I made the check and still had some tire left on the rim. I asked for directions back to the parking area and sped off to find a spare tube at my trailer. I then proceeded to do the absolute worst tire and tube change that I have ever done in my life and made it back to the restart check - only 33 minutes down. My work was then cut out for me. I then proceed-ed to “hare scramble” through the next two sec-tions and restarts to make it to the gas stop with

eleven minutes to spare. Just enough time to refill my gas, camelback and eat a PBJ sammich (provided by our trail Angels, Cindy Carstens and Rob-in Lichtenwalter. I am now going to get shot because I remember some-one else being at the gas stop giving me assistance, but I cannot for the life of me remember who it was. Thank you to whomever helped me with my remarkable eleven-minute pit stop :-)

After the gas, it was a blast! The trails that the Greenville Enduro Rid-ers put together are simply flow-ing and fast! I truly enjoy this event each year and hope that it remains on our schedule for years to come. The club made speedy work of the scoring and had trophies handed

out in an extremely timely manner. Congratulations to the FTR members who made it out of Clin-ton with the coveted Little Brown Jug Trophies, and a special congratulations to Mose Howard for finishing 7th Overall and Jonathan Belle for finishing 18th overall. That is quite the accomplishment!

We are now off to the infamous Croom Enduro! The Suncoast Trail Riders put on a first class event each year and this year they have mentioned some new, additional trail! That is exciting! With the events now utilizing the restart format, we no longer need any time-keeping and we simply are able to race from restart to check out. It is like 7 or 8 small hare scrambles. We invite both the motocrossers and the hare scramblers to come out and en-joy some great racing. We had a ton of hare scramblers and motocrossers out at the first event and they all went away smiling! Come out to Brooksville and give it a try! You may very well get hooked, like I did! See you at the races!

haplain’sC “Second chances”Hello my friends! It feels as though it has been years since I last wrote but Ragan says it’s only been a few months. I hope this article finds you doing well.

As a brief recap, I want to say thank you to Carol Preston and her gang of many volunteers on the Banquet Committee for their hard work on the FTR Annual Banquet. It is always a great joy to come together in a non-dusty or dirty environment and visit with friends.

Speaking of past events, I had the chance to ride with my son Ethan at the Lochloosa Enduro. That was neat. We had never ridden an enduro together. I have known many fathers who have shared that experience with their sons. Though he is only 14 and is riding a KTM 85, I thought it was time to open up a new world to him. When I challenged him to do this with me, I told him it would be like a “father-son” ride. We will just go out and have fun. “Don’t worry, there’s no pressure.” However, as I tell this story I must be honest, deep down I was thinking, This is the perfect opportunity to get him to work on his speed and endurance. I love enduros and after today, he will too!

At first, as we moved through the trail, clicking off mile after mile, I thought to myself, he’s doing a fine job. And like any competitive man riding an enduro with his son, I said, “It’s time to pick up the tempo on this ride,” so I blew by him hollering, “Let’s go.” Once I was out front, I began looking back and waving for him to follow in hot pursuit! His tempo never changed. I was waving my arm so much I looked like I was trying to get the attention of some trucker in a Wal-Mart parking lot. I finally came to an understanding about the arrangement of this ride when we rode up on a poor young fellow who had his bike buried up to the seat

in the only mud hole on the course. When we stopped and I told the stranded stranger that I was going to try to help, he told me that there was no need for me to waste my time and to keep going. At that point Ethan chimed in and said, “Oh don’t worry. We’re not racing. We’re out for a father-son ride.” What could I say? Ethan was right. This was supposed to be a fun day and in the end, it truly was. I will remember our first enduro as long as I live.

Speaking of long, I didn’t think that first hare scramble would ever come to an end. Don’t get me wrong. The River City Dirt Riders did a fantastic job; however, I’m so out of shape I look (and feel) like Slimer in Ghost Busters.

Whatever had happened to me over the summer is not good. I know we spent a lot of time on the water but that should not have been a bad thing. Ragan said it’s not from us being on the water, it’s from us eating too many of

those Double Stuffed Oreos while we were on the water. Maybe she’s right, but boy, those things sure are good.

Let me remind you that we will continue to offer our Saturday evening church service at the Florida Trail Riders Hare Scramble Series at 8 p.m. There may be only two instances where the times for our Saturday night services might be changed this race season. Old School Dirt Riders called me and said they might be offering a special Saturday night event at their race in December. If they do, there is a good chance that we will be backing our service up to 7 p.m. The second instance for a possible time change might be at the Chipley race (TTR Club). We are already in another time zone for that event so it is possible that we might start at 7 p.m. there too.

As we get ready for the new race season, let me encourage everyone to please be careful

“Run the race with endurance, the course that has been laid out for you”

(Hebrews 12:1).

orner

Page 17: Florida Trail Riders Magazine | October 2010

and ride smart. Last year I feel our injury list was not as long as it had been in previous years. Naturally I want you to ride hard, be competitive, and do your best, however, at the same time, let me encourage you to look out for one another. We all would like to be the next nationally recognized off-road racing man or woman but let’s get real. The reality of that happening is very slim. We go home Saturday or Sunday evening after our race and we wake on Monday morning, thank the Lord that we can go to work or school, and the week starts all over again. We enjoy bench racing with our friends whether it is over a meal or over the phone. We prep our bikes for the next event and the cycle repeats itself. For some, that cycle of life has been going on within this great Florida Trail Riders organization for more than 30 years. There are those who have been at it for 20 years; some for 10; and some joined FTR just last week. Regardless of how long you have been racing, the thrill and adrenaline rush is always there and remains the same. So lighten up and enjoy the time of fellowship with friends and family.

As I close out, let me say that no one ultimately chooses their own destiny. Yes, you have probably worked very hard to accomplish different things in your lifetime. Those who have many years to look back on have memories and experiences that none can take away. And, once you get to a certain age you can’t escape the fact that the Bible is true, that this life is short.

I just found out that a gentleman I know, an FTR member, was recently told he has terminal cancer and his time remaining would be short. I assume that each of us would take that news differently. But one thing’s for sure, it certainly puts things in perspective. If we place ourselves in their shoes for just a brief moment, our problems become so

inconsequential and our issues become so petty.

Some years back a singer by the name of Tim McGraw sang a song called “Live Like You Were Dying.” If you have never heard it before, you should take moment to listen to it. Here is the second stanza to that song:

“I was finally the husband, “That most the time I wasn’t.

“An’ I became a friend a friend would like to have.

“And all of a sudden goin’ fishin’, “Wasn’t such an imposition,

“And I went three times that year I lost my Dad. “Well, I finally read the Good Book, “And I took a good long hard look,

“At what I’d do if I could do it all again,

The reason those lyrics are so powerful is because they ring of a second chance. It’s an opportunity to make things right. Some call it a “do-over.” My God is the God of second chances. If you find yourself in the midst of regret and despair, call on the God of second chances. He is there for you. Think on these things!

I’ll see you at the races.Your friend,

Andy Dickson

Roll call was as follows:

Present: President Allen Pearce Vice President Jack Terrell Secretary Tiffany St. John Treasurer Jonny Simpkins Motocross Chairman Carol Preston Enduro Chairman George Tolson Hare Scramble Chairman Joe Steidl

I. Old Business

Carol gave a brief status update for the banquet. All Executive Committee members and Board members are asked to continue to support the banquet in a positive manner.

Allen requested that Joe and George contact the clubs that have sanctions for the upcoming season to determine if they will be using the FTR Insurance Policy. The clubs will be asked to prepay the insurance this year. The chairmen should also confirm if the sanction fees have been remitted.

Allen is going to Federal Express the FTR cell phone to Tiffany because the majority of calls will be membership and banquet related at this time.

Jack has sent website updates to Eugene Barnes for the changes to the phone number.

Carol has received a copy of the signed contract with The Dolphin for the 2011/2012 banquets. She is reviewing it and will forward a copy to all EC members.

II. New Business

Rulebook changes from the committees will be entered into the rulebook by the Business Manager. The Chairmen will need to proof their sections to ensure accuracy. The 2010-2011 version of book will be posted on-line in lieu of printing a book.

Jack has sent everything to the printer for the magazine. The printer sent the proofs for approval last Wednesday. Jack will get the proofs reviewed

and back to the printer as soon as possible. The magazine will be 86 pages long. It should be mailed out within the next week or so.

Tiffany has been working with a couple of advertisers that are interested in advertising on the website. She is sending Jonny the billing information and will forward the artwork to Eugene for the website. Jack will continue to work with our magazine advertisers.

Joe informed the committee that Donny Richardson has agreed to be the Hare Scramble Referee for the upcoming season.

Joe nominated Bill Drymon as the Election Chairman for the November 2010 election. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Allen has received one proposal for the FTR Scorekeeper position. He will forward it to all of the EC for review.

Nominees for Sportsman of the Year were discussed. Any further nominees should be emailed to Carol.

The Magazine Editor position was discussed. The rankings are complete. Unanimously, one applicant was ranked as the preferred choice. Jack has spoken with the applicant. She will be finished with school on July 2, 2010. She is hoping to secure a job in Florida but she does have resumes out in several states. Our preference would be that she be located in Florida while handling this position. Allen will email the Board with the rankings for this position. Joe made a motion to enter into negotiations with the top ranked applicant pending her moving to Florida. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Tiffany was excused for the remainder of the meeting.

The Business Manager position was discussed by the remaining members of the EC. The applicants were ranked and negotiations with the top ranked applicant will move forward.

At approximately 9:00 p.m., a motion to adjourn was made. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

The motion passed 3 For 1 Against.

Carol updated everyone with the latest ticket count. We still need to sell more tickets to ensure that no penalty is incurred. Allen suggested that we speak to the hotel to see if we can negotiate anything to help reduce the any penalty that we may receive. Several ideas were discussed to help generate additional ticket sales and hotel bookings. Carol will follow up with the hotel. Carol suggested that in the future, the banquet date be moved up further in the summer to put it closer to the end of the season.

A brief discussion was held about the hiring of the Business Manager, Magazine Editor and Scorekeeper. Jack is in contact with the candidate for the Magazine Editor position. A contract needs to be negotiated with her. The scorekeeper position proposal can be looked at after the banquet since the first race isn’t until September. Allen is preparing a test for the Business Manager candidate to take to show proficiency in Quickbooks. II. New Business

Allen has received a verbal proposal from Scott Dawson to produce FTR products. He is proposing Polos, Trendy T-Shirts, License Plates, Jackets, Mugs and several other items. He would produce, stock and ship the items from his on-line store. FTR would receive a percentage of the profits. Allen will contact Scott to get something drawn up in writing.

Jonny reported that the Hilton made 2 withdrawals totaling $7,500 through the debit card on file with the hotel. No one from FTR authorized the transaction. Jonny will contact the Hilton to verify what this transaction is for and why we were not aware of it.

Jack reminded Allen and Carol about preparing and posting the event flyers for the BSTR Enduro and first Motocross.

Jonny informed us that he received a notice 20 Florida Trail Riders | October 2010

General Membership Meeting Minutes | August 7

A meeting of the Florida Trail Riders General Membership was called to order at approximately 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Hilton Disney Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The President determined a quorum of the general membership was present.

I. Reports of Officers and Committees

FTR President, Allen Pearce opened the meeting by welcoming everyone. The past year has been a very difficult time both for FTR and our members. The Hare Scramble at Gatoback scheduled for next weekend has been cancelled due to a land issue. The owner is trying to work out a solution but Gatorback may be lost forever. We have a full slate of events beginning on August 22 with the first motocross followed by two enduros and then the first hare scramble. I would also like to introduce Jenn Sheppard as our new Magazine Editor. In addition to the magazine, she will also handle the advertising for the magazine and website.Jonny Simpkins presented the financial overview. There is $47, 662 in the main checking account. We have approximately $47,000 in the Land Use Fund and an additional $8,295 in the Scholarship Fund. The line of credit and credit card are at a zero balance.Jack Terrell presented a Land Use Report. We worked with a lobbyist this year. We were successful in getting the minor release liability law passed which will allow us to use the minor releases at our events. The required safety course for all youths riding on public land is now allowed to be taken on line. The RTP funding has been approved for construction on the OHV park in Milton which should begin in the next four months. Miami-Dade County and Colliard County are in the process of developing an OHV park. Polk County has started the engineering design on an OHV Park and will be applying for an RTP grant.Enduro Chairman, George Tolson reported that the enduro series finished the year with nine races. There had been twelve races on the schedule but land issues caused the cancellation of three of the events. This coming season has nine races on the schedule and six of those are in state.Joe Steidl reported that the hare scrambles series had a pretty good year. The rider numbers were down a little but overall it was not too bad.Motocross Chairman, Carol Preston, introduced the new Chairman, Ken Kloza. The series averaged approximately 140 riders at each event. The new season has twelve events on the schedule. With the implementation of the one day MX pass, we should see the number of entries increase because there are a lot of local riders that only go to races at their home track.Carol Preston gave a brief report on the banquet. We still have people coming in and getting rooms and tickets.II. Unfinished Business

Results MX #1Round One of the FTR Motocross Series kicked off August 22nd in Okeechobee at Thundercross. Practice began Saturday and a thunderstorm Saturday afternoon made for some muddy conditions on Sunday morning. The track crew did a great job of maintaining the track and after only a few motos the track condition was terrific. Some of the best racing was in the 250/Open C Class, 125C and Plus 45 classes. As the racing progressed through the first motos, the skies darkened and threatened rain again. All the first motos were completed. It wasn’t until early in the second round of motos that the heavy rain began to fall. A rain delay was eventually called and it was decided that, because of the continued rain and threatening weather as well as the condition of the track, the second motos were cancelled and that concluded racing for the day.

For those of you who have not been to Thundercross and live in the Central Florida area, it is only about a 2-hour drive from Orlando. The track is terrific. It is a long fast track and also has an air conditioned viewing room at the finish line. WMR was on hand handing out gift certificates to riders and signing up riders for the Tucker Rocky Contingency FTR Program. In addition, Cycle Sport Center of Orlando donated gift certificates that were handed out at the Rider's Meeting, holeshot winners and moto winners.

Round Two of the FTR Motocross Series kicked off Labor Day weekend on September 5 at Bartow Motocross. For those of you who haven’t been there, Bartow has added a supercross style section to the track in addition to the longer sandier section of the track. It makes for interesting racing given the two distinct sections of the track and longer lap times. The Merrick boys made an appearance and Cody Merrick went 1-1 in the Youth 13-15 Class besting Raymond Johnson and Stephen Culleny who took second and third respectfully. Regular FTR rider Brandon O’Dell went 1-1 in the 7-11 85 Class besting Cody’s little brother Chris Merrick who went to 2-2. Wyatt Dreggors finished third with a 3-3 finish. In the 125C Class Ryan Emerson won the overall going 1-1 with Alex Therrien going 2/2 on his new KTM 250F. For those of you who have not followed Alex he has really stepped it up at the beginning of the second half of the FTR Motocross Series last year. The Plus Class 50 race also saw some great racing with Gary Emerson going 1-1 he besting Gerald Gay and John Osborne who finished second and third respectfully. With the addition of the new supercross portion to the Bartow Motocross track, Bartow which had historically been thought of as a predominately sand track, riders will find the track a lot more fun and exciting. Results MX #3Round three of the FTR Motocross Series at Bithlo Motorsports in East Orange County is one of the favorite FTR tracks. Bithlo changed the track layout particularly in the front section near the spectator area. Wally Pixley and his crew did a great job as usual and it was a great day of racing with beautiful conditions and cool temperatures. The Plus 50 Class had some great racing with Gerald Gay taking the overall win going 1-1 in both motos. Ryan Hayes finished second going 3-2 and John Osborne finished third going 2-3. Frankie Kloza joined his mom and dad racing at Bithlo and won the overall going 3-1 in the 125C Class besting Cody Thomas and Michael Norman who went 2-3 respectively. Alex Therrin struggled finishing sixth going 6-5 in his motos. In the Vet C Class, Matt French won the overall again going 1-1 with Mark Gagon finishing second with a 2-4. Lance Olman finished third going 5/2 in his motos.

FTR Scholarship

Cody Thomas | Photo by Sandy Moss

The FTR scholarship started as a $500 scholarship in 1989. Now, three scholarships are awarded and the annual amount has grown over the years. A formal Scholarship Committee awards applicants based on their academic record, extracurricular activities and their involvement with FTR. More points are given to the members of FTR who are involved in their club on a local level.

In addition to the club and individual donations, a 50/50 raffle was held at the banquet and added to the total collected. Cody Thomas, 15 of Sarasota, won the 50/50 raffle last year and donated it back to FTR. This year, when he won again, he donated it back, again! “I guess it was the right thing to do,” Cody said at the banquet.

This year’s total amount that was donated was $8,257.00. $4,128.50 was awarded to Owen Pakledinaz, SADRA member and student at Florida Atlantic University studying Biomedical Engineering. $2,064.25 was awarded to Jacyln Pavai, a student at Saint Leo University studying in Psychology. She’s in the BSTR family. $2,064.25 went to Robert Prather, RCDR member and student at University of North Florida studying Criminology.

Scholarship Committee members: Scott Lamb, Jenni Lamb, Mose Howard, Will Hardin, Ragan Dickson and Don King

Page 51: Florida Trail Riders Magazine | October 2010

This month’s column was inspired by trips to this year’s Daytona and Jacksonville supercross and some of the shenanigans that took place as well as one of my favorite riders I love to hate. The inspiration has also lead me to get more involved with some Florida motorcycle dealers teams for 2011. I would like to provide some coaching based around a sound fitness and nutrition program, stay tuned for more details at the end of this column on this concept. This month, it’s all about coaching and how it may be able to help your race program.

Coaching is a powerful conversation and support system empowering, encouraging and equipping you to achieve your potential in your race program and life more easily. Coaching is an ongoing tool used to enhance your life. Moving you from where you are now to where you want to be in the future. Health and Wellness coaching focuses on areas of physical, mental and spiritual health while encompassing all other aspects of life. Since no one lives in a vacuum, a well educated coach recognizes and incorporates all aspects of life into their client’s personal plan. Coaching allows you to clarify your purpose and vision through strategy and planning resulting with greater strides in success as you move toward your goals in life. Why choose coaching over therapy? In a nut shell, coaching focuses on where you are presently and where you are headed with a goal of helping you gain clarity about your vision, overcome obstacles seeking to sidetrack your success, while accelerating the rate of achieving personal growth empowering you to make goals a reality. While therapy, in contrast, focuses upon your past. Although, past issues may be brought up and considered during a coaching session for the purpose of clarifying the present, a coach does not focus on resolving the past. If the past is an issue, a stumbling block for you, then counseling / therapy may be your best option. However, if your past is simply a fact (whether positive or negative) then you are likely ready for coaching. A good coach will readily identify during your coaching session if your past seems to be a greater issue for you and thus suggest counseling. Many people also find that coaching and counseling simultaneously can be beneficial. Of course each professional will focus on different areas of life. What is the difference between coaching and consulting or mentoring? In both consulting and mentoring, that professional is drawing upon their personal knowledge, education and experience they’ve achieved in a particular area. This expertise is then shared with the client assisting them to their success. An ideal situation is to have a coach who has gained experience in the same or similar area which is of interest for you. In so doing, you will reap by additional guided expertise from your coach. Although, this set up is ideal, it is not necessarily needed for you to achieve your personal goals. A professional, experienced and qualified coach will be able to assist you as you proceed through this valuable process empowering you to achieve the goals you set while seeing you into a successful future. Ultimately, when choosing a coach there are a few considerations to keep in mind: 1. Use wisdom 2. Be certain your coach is educated/certified, qualified 3. Seek a onetime consultation to make sure your personalities mesh 4. Put your whole heart into the process. By following this advice you will aid in achieving the best possible experience with the greatest results achieved. Every coach desires to see each client achieve the goals and success they set out for. Health and Wellness

“Coaching”coaching is of great importance, in my opinion, for if you achieve great success but do not have the health to enjoy it then, your efforts may be in vain.

Innovation Training Systems is dedicated to coaching a brand new type of motocross team/program for 2011 and we are looking for dealers with teams. If you are a Florida motorcycle dealer looking to have your name represented with the best program in the nation this is it. The ITS program will be more than a amateur motocross program as we will focus on fitness, nutrition, professionalism, education and life skills. This concept has never been done to my knowledge in motocross and what a great way for your dealership to gain some positive recognition.
