FAQ: FTR MotocrossSean Fitzgerald - 2013-14 FTR MX

Scorekeeper / Referee

1. MX schedule requires coordination to

avoid several things, from our H/S events to Loretta

Lynn Qualifiers, Gold Cups, Winter Ams, Mini Os etc. Generally these are all posted sometime

in August. After those schedules are posted,

we then have to confirm availability with tracks

to get everything on the calendar.

2. MX fees for racing and gate fees are set by

the track and not FTR MX. However, typically

the race fees are $25.00 per class and you can run

as many classes as you like. Most of our riders do 2 classes and some do 3.

3. FTR/Florida Georgia combined

races - We are likely to have at least 5 rounds

combined again. When running these rounds

you pay the $5 FTR head tax separately for

each class, so effectively you are paying $30

per round. However, these races have turned

out to be some of the largest of any series in the state and you are eligible for both

series championships.

Additionally FL/GA has negotiated reduced gate

fees at the combined events are and you end up gaining the $5 back.

4. Class participation - Our

points can be a little confusing when looking

at the overalls. Any rider without enough races to qualify for year end are dropped from the list. So there is often

more participation than you think. We combine multiple classes on the

gate and stagger start if safety is a concern: i.e.

if 3 riders sign up for +50 and 5 sign up for +40, we will combine on the gate but score separately for

the overall finishes.

5. As far as seat time goes, most people come

on Saturday and take advantage of the practice

day. On Sunday there are generally 3 laps of

practice and we try to do 5 lap motos. So you are looking at approximately

13 laps if you do one class. If you ride as hard

as you can for 5 laps and still feel like you are ready for another couple laps, you probably didn’t

ride hard enough. lol Motocross is a sprint.

John Indelicato: Enduros are definitely the most bang for ya buck! Plenty of seat time! Ride at your own pace...I definitely got better at racing Hare Scrambles due to riding Enduros!

• Mike made a motion to accept Gary Wyatt’s request to schedule Azalea City’s event to April 26 & 27 to be held at Gatorback. Kayla seconded. Discussion: There is currently a MX race scheduled for that Sunday. Mike also spoke with Allen Pearce about the reason why they are currently at the Sumterville property instead of Gatorback. Allen explained to Mike that there was land issues with zoning and a problem that they have only 100 acres of land to race on before using some other’s private property.Vote: 5 no (Amanda, Jeremy, Kevin, Mike, Rick) – Kayla passed on the vote.Motion fails.

• Mike made a motion to offer the date of May 24 & 25 to Azalea City as an alternative date to hold their event if they accept. Rick seconded.Vote: 5 yes (Jeremy, Kayla, Kevin, Mike, Rick) – 1 no (Amanda)Motion passes.

• Mike made a motion to accept the following Emergency Rule Change Proposal. Kayla seconded.Emergency Rule ChangeThis rule is being proposed due to the safety and liability issues that have occurred due to the recent actions of participants in the Sportsman class. This class has no consequences for their actions because disqualifications do not affect them since there are no series points. We need to make a statement that there will be strong consequences for infractions because this class is a non-competitive class in a competition series and could pose a danger to others if not held responsible.Ch. A General FTR Sanction Meeting will be held in the fourth quarter of each competition year. The exact time and place will be announced in the FTR Magazine at least 30 days in advance. There shall not be more than 12 Enduros, 15 Hare Scrambles and 14 Motocross events per year sanctioned by FTR. In-state Enduros shall have first priority of sanction dates. Each promoter will have the opportunity to have a date before any promoter is considered for a second event. Any series having less than the maximum allowed sanctions may add additional sanction dates up to the maximum allowed. The sanction dates must be approved by the appropriate competition committee and the Executive Committee. This is to be for special cases only and a minimum two month’s notice must be given to the general membership prior to the sanction date. Failure to pay sanction fee within 30 days from the sanction application will result in forfeit of date in question.2. Prior to the General FTR Sanction Meeting, the competition committees will meet to accept sanction applications for their areas of interest. The agreed-to sanctions and schedules will be presented to the General FTR Sanction Meeting for review and approval. 3. Promoters having FTR sanctions are not required to have AMA sanctions. AMA advancement points will still be kept by FTR as agreed by the AMA.4. It is mandatory that all promoting clubs provide liability insurance for any FTR sanctioned event, and that the Florida Trail Riders, and its officers and officials, be named on the insurance policy and/or certificate as insured parties. The insurance will be for spectator and participant liability coverage for a minimum of $1 million.5. Sanctions are non-transferable and non-assignable. No refund of sanction fees will be made by FTR unless authorized. All sanctions must be used on the date stated on the sanction. However, any

sanction postponed by extreme hardship or weather conditions may be rescheduled by the Executive Committee.A minimum of three weeks notice must be given to the general membership prior to the rescheduled sanction date. Sanctions cancelled by the promoter or withdrawn by the Executive Committee may be transferred to another promoter by a two-thirds majority vote of the Executive Committee. A minimum of three weeks notice must be given to the general membership prior to the transferred sanction date.6. FTR may refuse to grant a sanction, and may withdraw or cancel a sanction already granted, for any reason which FTR deems to be in the best interest of the sport, including, without limitation, the violation of any rules in this book.7. Notifications required by Section E. Sanctions, unless otherwise specified, shall be sufficient if timely placed on the home page of the FTR website and the FTR Hotline. To add:8. There must be (6) days between Hare Scrambles Sanction Dates, Rain Date and Actual Race Dates the only exception to allow a back to back event if event is cancelled due to emergency weather conditions and is approved by the Executive Committee.Discussion: Trying to help with some hardships not only on the General Membership but volunteers as well.Motion passes.

• Jack Terrell makes a motion to accept the following proposal. Bill Jenkins seconded. Article XIV | E. Sanctions1. A General FTR Sanction Meeting will be held in the fourthquarter of each competition year. The exact time and place willbe announced in the FTR Magazine at least 30 days in advance. There shall not be more than 12 Enduros, 15 Hare Scramblesand 14 Motocross events per year sanctioned by FTR. Failure to pay sanction fee within 30days from the sanction application will result in forfeit of date inquestion.

Change to:1. A General FTR Sanction Meeting will be held in the fourthquarter of each competition year. The Board of Directors will constitute the voting members at the General FTR Sanction Meeting. The exact time and place will be announced in the FTR Magazine at least 30 days in advance. There shall not be more than 12 Enduros, 15 Hare Scrambles and 14 Motocross events per year sanctioned by FTR. In-state Enduros shall have first priority of sanction dates. Hare Scrambles have 2nd priority of sanction dates. Hare Scrambles and Motocross shall not be scheduled on the same dates. In-State Enduros and Hare Scrambles shall not be scheduled on the same dates. Motocross can schedule on an Enduro date. Each promoter will have the opportunity to have a date before any promoter is considered for a second event. Any series having less than the maximum allowed sanctions may add additional sanction dates up to the maximum allowed. The additional sanction dates must be approved by the appropriate competition committee and

the Executive Committee. This additional sanction is to be for special cases only and a minimum two month’s notice must be given to the general membership prior to the sanction date. Failure to pay sanction fee within 30 days from the sanction application will result in forfeit of date in question. Sanction fee must be submitted with the application.Discussion: This proposed rule change is to clean up the General Eule regarding sanctions because it is very ambiguous. The process of scheduling for which we have always adhered to, is not completely written out in the section it belongs in the rule book. For instance, it currently states that an In-state Enduro gets first priority of sanction dates but does not directly state that no other series can use that date. Recently there was a rescheduling of a Hare Scrambles on top of an existing motocross date. Ch. IX Motocross Rules A. General #8. states that there will be no MX and HS scheduled on the same dates. It also states that a MX and Enduro may run on the same date, which is currently practiced. This rule change will make it clear so we support all of the FTR series but show the ranking in which each has priority and is allowed to schedule their dates. Also nowhere in the rule book does it state who the voting members are of the General FTR sanction meeting and that should be clarified. Motion fails.

• Jeremy Powell (Forum Administrator) discussed about getting some policies in place with forum “rule breakers.” Ford stated that write and enforce rules that you feel need to be in place for repeat offenders.

• Keith Finnerty with Central Florida Trail Riders: AMA National Co-SanctionSome reasons why we should have a Co-Sanctioned event with the AMA National H/S Series:• More widespread recognition of FTR and its events by other regional promoters will lead to better participation.• AMA provides the best overall risk mitigation, insurance package and support in the industry – supporting AMA helps strengthen this critical benefit for all off road racing, including FTR.• Stand in solidarity with the principal defender of motorcycle rights at all levels in our country with longevity and highly qualified specific experience.• A National event will generate excitement for FTR events both locally and around the nation. As well, AMA provides a clearinghouse of rider information and results from both FTR events and from other national and regional events to allow comparison to other riders around the country.• National H/S participants coming especially for this race will provide more fees to FTR for scoring as well as more gate fees, vendor purchases, t-shirt sales and other economic benefit.

Central Florida Trail Riders has been and will continue to be an AMA-chartered club since 1975. Being aligned with the American Motorcyclist Association at many levels provides strength to our joint motorcycle community furthering the efforts to protect our riding rights. The AMA has provided support to grassroots motorcyclist organizations like FTR and CFTR since 1924. Currently, the AMA sanctions an East Coast National Championship Hare Scramble Series that is co-sanctioned with five other promoting organizations, like FTR, and their respective series. Establishing an opportunity to share our motorcycle experience with other like-minded individuals and organizations across the United States is what we are here for: To Promote Offroad Motorcycle Events for Responsible Motorcyclists.Starting to work on this opportunity in January of 2013, I have always thought of it as a positive opportunity for a variety of reasons. I am not alone; everyone that I share the idea with has a positive reaction. Now, after careful scrutiny over many months of examination, I truly believe in the benefits it will bring to all involved. The AMA series does things a little differently than FTR but the AMA is very flexible to make the program work at this new location with FTR and CFTR. I have seen no difference in our programs that would create an insurmountable obstacle. Both AMA and FTR start on the common idea that a Hare Scramble

is a race across natural terrain on a course that is 6-12 miles long over a period of time approximately 2 to 4 hours. From this we start to add all the rules but the essence remains the same.Having a National Series gets people from other areas of the country with different terrains and different regional customs to share experiences with FTR members and their families. Our riders will learn a little about how other series run and out-of-state riders will learn a little about how we run our series. I believe this is the true essence of what we do. This is how we gain more experience and knowledge. Before I made the application to host a National event I had to seek counsel and support of the people that will work to make this happen. The CFTR membership was alerted that we would have to work extra hard and invest more money to make this happen. We had to secure permission of the landowner. We had to see what else was expected of us by AMA with the acceptance of the sanction. CFTR club members were totally in favor of the commitment necessary to make the National happen. As it turns out, we already do most of the things needed by AMA. Both sanctions require that we run all classes to hold a sanction. Both require us to provide trophies to a number of top finishers in each class. The AMA requires the trophies to be of a certain size and that the trophies are presented on a podium; pictures must be taken of all trophy winners and submitted to the AMA. Plans to accommodate this have been completed and it may add some fun to the ceremony event. The AMA already tracks our scores as well as for other series in the nation. Our scores are submitted to the AMA to help ensure that riders are participating in the proper classes when they compete out of region. With the new technological advances, sharing this information helps everyone who enjoys our sport. The Florida Trail Riders has invested in an electronic scoring system that excels at making this all possible and has the capacity to do all we need in the integration with an AMA co-sanctioned event. The AMA is an organization that FTR is involved with already. Right now, AMA provides comprehensive general liability insurance for many events in our various series; next year, AMA insurance may be required coverage for events. The AMA is unique in its position as the national leader in risk mitigation for motorcycle events. No other organization has as much organization as AMA in not only providing insurance but the handling of eventual claims after a disaster. Since they are seeing so many claims, they have unprecedented experience in the nuances of the process. They will be listing our event in the National Magazine providing recognition and acknowledgement to our series for more than 12 months. Promoting our sport is very important. Providing a chance to other riders to visit our events and be involved is why we are in existence. The AMA provides a sanction to host an event and leaves enforcement of the rules to the promoter of the event just as the FTR does. For this joint event, here are the conflicts and answers to how to make this work. We are asking to do this as a one-time event that may make some precedent and educate us as to how we might improve our series. We envision two races that share a start and finish that will be run simultaneously; we will run the classes together and integrated as displayed by the attached spreadsheet. Florida Trail Riders members who are eligible in the AMA National series will automatically be entered for the National series event and score points in that series for no additional cost to the rider. All classes are very similar. The most notable difference is that the AMA series ages are spaced for 10-year intervals and we have 5-year intervals. National points riders will line-up with the lowest eligible age group from FTR as

per the alignment of class outline included. How do the National competitors enter our FTR event? We offer a one-day membership that does not allow the rider to receive points for the FTR series and only allows them to ride our event so as to collect the scoring head tax. We could offer it for free to out-of-state riders. We Central Florida Trail Riders will pay the same head tax and scoring fee for each and every rider that competes and/or is scored at the event, increasing the fees to Florida Trail Riders for our year-end awards and banquet. No rule adjustments in the accommodation of the integration of AMA and FTR rules would jeopardize rider safety or the integrity of the rules. All safety equipment and sound requirements will be enforced as per FTR rules. Both series ask that any or all variations be announced on the flyer so all will know what is to be expected. An example would be that the AMA rules dictate a dead engine start with rider on his bike. FTR uses a Le Mans style where we run to our bikes and start them. The AMA is fine with our FTR start and sees no problem with deviation. On race duration, the AMA suggests a time of two-and-one-half hours to three-and-one-half hours for our top A and B riders. The FTR runs for two hours and five minutes with a checkered flag displayed at the two-hour mark minus the time of the fastest rider on the first lap and no one is allowed back out on the course at that time. The AMA also specifies a number of laps. The AMA is willing to accept our duration for the event. However, for the last race of each day, why not allow our checkered flag to be thrown at the two-hour mark for this pilot race. The difference in our PeeWee events is a small amount of time; AMA runs 30 minutes and we currently run 20 and 25. We propose running with AMA times providing a little more riding time for our members. On scoring, I have been advised that we have the capacity to score both events at the same time and if something else is needed, CFTR will be willing to step up and provide what might be needed in extra volunteers and computer capacity.CFTR would propose that we open our sign-up on Friday evening. The Rulebook does specifically allow for the deviation of the times as long as they are on the flyer. I have included a proposed schedule for this special event. In order to allow riders to identify one-day National riders, CFTR will provide a front number plate and helmet identifier sticker to identify all National-only riders; this will serve also for our backup scorers and provide trackable information for our Safety crew. This should allow other riders on the course to know if they are competing in the same class.Pictures of the National podium will be submitted to the AMA for national recognition. CFTR will build a podium and implement a Trophy Presentation Program that will provide a time for trophies to be presented so that all may be present and share in the accolades. We have the tools and experience to meet new challenges. We appreciate your support and positive encouragement to make this exciting event happen.

CFTR/AMA proposed co-sanctioned event (Sept. 27 and 28, 2014) applicable FTR rule exceptions are for this proposed event only, all other events will have no exceptions to FTR rules. Once event is completed, exceptions will be void:• One-day membership fee of $10 for out-of-state AMA members.• FTR takes all head taxes on all event participants.• The Quad race and the last Sunday race are 2 hours. All other races will start as per FTR rules.• There will be a number plate exception for those who are AMA

only members.• Numbers will be provided by CFTR.• One-day membership will not receive FTR series points. Vote: UnanimousMotion passes.

Page 14 | Chapter IV | Section A4. National Enduro rules for scoring emergency checks may be used as the methodology for scoring FTR enduros if an event is a “National Enduro” or “Co-Sanctioned” enduro or an “FTR Enduro.”The National Enduro Series defines “scoring” as follows:Emergency checks will be scored by total minutes and seconds, and are calculated from the top of a riders due minute. Scores will be tabulated by the actual number of minutes and seconds that a rider is late to an emergency check. Example: if you are due on minute 20, and come in at 21:30, your score is 1 “Minute” and 30 “Seconds” not 1 “Point” and 60 “Emergency Points.”SERA defines this methodology as follows:Emergency checks will be scored by total minutes and seconds, and are calculated from the top of a riders due minute. Scores will be tabulated by the actual number of minutes and seconds that a rider is late to an emergency check. Example: if you aredue on minute 20, and come in at 21:30, your score is 1 “Minute”

and 30 “Seconds” not 1 “Point” and 60 “Emergency Points.” The riders score will be an accumulation of minutes and seconds totaled together. The club MUST announce that their event will be run as a “start control scoring format” on the event flyer.FTR Enduros define the methodology as per the hosting club’s preference giving the hosting club the option to score via the National format or via the legacy format described in detail within latter sections of this rule book. This flexibility allows theclub to decide the best methodology based upon resources available and other variables. The Scoring methodology will be captured on the sanctioning form, should be on the flyer and should be disclosed at the riders meeting. Our event calendar will publish what is captured on the sanctioning form and will update the information as the Enduro nears in the event the club changes scoring methodology. It is the club’s right to choose a methodology and the rider’s right to ask the hostingclub for clarity at the rider’s meeting.Vote: UnanimousMotion passes – New rule in effect for next season

JS: Hey, Cody. Congratulations on this year’s championships. CE: Thank you. I’m stoked. This is exciting. JS: For sure. What would you say is one of your first FTR memories?CE: I started riding when I was about 7 on a 250 Honda and then I started racing when I turned 13 and I raced the Schoolboy class from 13-15 and then when I turned 15 that’s when I got on big bikes in the A class for about four races and then I moved to the AA and I’ve been racing AA since. JS: You had a 250 when you were 7?CE: Yeah that was my first Christmas present my mom and my dad got me. JS: Wow. I think I was on an 80 when I was 7! Well, you raced BMX before that?CE: Yeah I started racing BMX when I was 3. And then I ended that when I got into racing four wheelers. JS: How did you make that transition? From two to four wheels?CE: My dad. My dad’s always built four wheelers and grew up on three wheelers and then he finally bought me a four wheeler and from there on, we traveled to most of the GNCCs just for him and

then when I got old enough to race the big class, that’s when I started racing.JS: Awesome. Do you ever look back and wished you raced a dirt bike?CE: Yeah, I actually started riding a dirt bike, like a big wheel, when I was 9 and then I just jumped to four wheelers. It was fun. I like them both. JS: And you also race motocross?CE: Yeah sometimes. I used to only race motocross because I got my 450 when I was 12 and in the FTR I couldn’t race the big bike in FTR so I did the local series down here at Seminole and (Air) Dania on the 450. I started that first and then I started racing in the woods.JS: That’s cool. What’s your favorite FTR track?CE: Probably the Myakka one. Just because it flows good. All the trees, I like the big trees and the sand whoops – I love the whoops. It has a little bit of everything, whoops, tight stuff, fast stuff. It’s a good track all around.JS: Where do you ride in Miami?

CE: (Laughs.) There’s really only one place. Miami MX – it’s a motocross track. That’s really the only place to ride. I try to go there at least once a week.JS: Do you do any other

Editor’s notE: Cody Ellison is not only the 2013-2014 Quad AA overall champion but this year marks his fourth Quad AA championship in a row for the 47AA Honda. FTR Magazine recently caught up with the 20-year-old Miami native to see what he’s doing for a day job, what he loves about FTR and what he would do if he won the lottery.

training?CE: I do some mountain biking. A little bit of road biking but mainly mountain biking. JS: Tell me about your Honda?CE: I’ve always ridden a Honda since I started.JS: You also like racing the GNCCs as well? CE: Yeah, we try but unfortunately this year we haven’t done any because I got a new job. JS: Oh, really. What do you do?CE: I work for the county down here – Miami Dade Water and Sewer.JS: That’s pretty cool. CE: Yeah, I just started. It’s probably been like 8 months now.

JS: Hang on to that job!CE: I know. It’s a good, steady job and forever.JS: So, I take it you’re not putting all of your eggs into the pro racing basket? CE: I wish. If I won the lottery, I would. It’s just hard down here. Both my parents work for the county, too, so it’s not like we can just pick up and move. JS: That’s smart. Tell me more about your family life?CE: It’s me, my dad, mom and my sister. They raced BMX before we were born and then they got both of us into BMX and then we started racing four wheelers. They travel to most of my races – well my dad travels to all of them. My mom travels to as many as you can and my sister makes it to most of them. JS: Your parents both raced? Cool!CE: My dad still does race and my mom used to race in the Women’s class but back then it was the Golden Women or

something like that. JS: Do you keep in the touch with a lot of the other Quad AA pros? CE: They know me pretty well. Chris Borich invited me to his house in Daytona but now I got the job so I can’t really go during the week. But I ride with Adam McGill, Johnny Gallagher and all them at Croom.JS: Nice. I hope I never run into you guys! (Laughs.) So I checked the scores and you won 5 races this season. Was it one of your favorite years or how does it stack up against your other AA championships?CE: This year was okay. It wasn’t one of my best years but it was a good year.

I had some bike problems. JS: Any horror stories? You get upside down on that thing?CE: Not freestyle - when I wreck, I do. I had one really bad wreck I think it was in the beginning of the season when all the

pros were down and my spindle snapped off and I just plowed into the face of a whoop and that one got me pretty good. But other than that, I’ve been pretty lucky. Wrecks here and there but nothing major.JS: Where did the number 47 come from?CE: It was actually from this racing team when I was 12 called Image Racing and he helped me out when I was really little

CHATTING WITH Traci Jaggars Ellison• his dad just always had that passion (to race) and as soon as we had a boy, that was it. He taught him to ride a bike really early. Cody was riding the track by himself at 3. He did very good at that. We took him to a world competition where he actually competed against 80 kids and got world number 2. He did really well at that. Then he just

kind of got bored with it and moved over to the quads.• when he was little racing Quad Junior, he used to tell me all the time, ‘Mom, I’m going to race AA. I’m going to win AA – that’s my goal.’ And he just loves it. He’s very passionate about racing.• We’ve had this discussion because he did just get a really good job. And I told him it’s going to be hard to keep both things up. You can’t take the days off for the races so we’ll see. He still puts

and he ended up with 47 and literally he taught me a lot of the things I know today. It just stuck with me and ever since then I’ve been number 47. JS: That’s cool. What would you say to the younger racers? CE: Just do good in school, that’s what my parents always told me. If I get good grades, I can go racing. And have fun with it. Don’t take it so serious because if you’re not having fun then why do it. The moment you start taking it so serious and stop having fun is when it becomes more like a job than anything. JS: Absolutely. Who would you like to thank?CE: Performance ATV, Ray at Palmetto Motorsports, CV4, Axis, Maxxis, P3, Houser, Blingstar, South Florida Machine Shop, Jason Lyons and the Yard Stop

everything he has into his training. He just loves it. Hopefully he can juggle both.• the biggest thing I think for him is, I don’t know if you’ve ever seen him race, but he is dead last off the start 95 percent of the time. He cannot get a start for anything and he never gives up. I think I tell him that all the time, ‘I’m so proud of you because no matter how far ahead they all are, you always pass them.’ He always does his best; he’ll never quit. He’s 1000 percent, even if he breaks

down, he’ll do everything he can to get his bike back on the track. • i love all the riders, all the families. Everybody’s so good with Cody. Somebody from the track left him on his birthday weekend a whole uniform anonymously he left it in the truck all wrapped up and said, ‘Cody, you’re a great kid. Always smiling. We love watching you,’ and gave him a whole new suit. He doesn’t know who did it. It was really nice. Everybody is really good to him.
