We extend a special thanks to Margaret Overcash, Taylor Slye, the trustees and others. We are grateful to Joe and Lynne Collins for their help in making our transition as easy as possible. We had a wonderful first Sunday and enjoyed beginning to get to know this congregation. We are going to be focused on listening, learning and leading. We want to hear your story – the story of your life and family, your story of faith in Christ, your story with First Church and your hopes and dreams for the future of the church. This will be a time of learning. In fact, the learning curve will be steep. There are a lot of names to learn and we will be working diligently on them. We will be putting together the various relationships within the congregation and learning our way around. We will be learning the culture of this church and community. A seminary professor defined “culture” as “the way we do things around here.” Do you like that definition of culture? I do. I respect the culture of a church and a community and want to learn the culture here. Leading is a part of my calling. I want to help the church hear God’s call, see God’s vision and walk in the way God leads us. I am excited about the gifted staff, lay leadership and membership of First Church. It is exciting to hear all that God has done here in your rich heritage. We look forward to all God has in store in the future. As that future unfolds, let us remember the words of encouragement found in the words of the prophets of old. Isaiah 43:19 says “Behold, I am doing a new thing. Now it springs forth. Do you not perceive it?” and Jeremiah 29:11 says “For surely I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future with hope.” Listening, learning and leading – I am excited to be your pastor and I am excited about the unfolding of God’s vision for our future. “Welcome to Mocksville.” Those words have typified the experience of Susan and me in our first two weeks at First Church. Your warmth and openness have been a blessing to us. We appreciate your many acts of kindness.

We appreciate all the efforts to get the parsonage in order after the lightning strike.

Do you not perceive it?” and Jeremiah 29:11 says “For surely I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future with hope.”

Listening, learning and leading – I am excited to be your pastor and I am excited about the unfolding of God’s vision for our future.

A Shared “Blessing Bag” Story

By: Shannon West (Teresa West’s Daughter)

Traversing the streets of Winston Salem often brings heartache and twinges of pain, as most street corners near my home are filled with the less fortunate. Being a single mom, I often find myself financially strained and unable to help those on the corners. A few weeks ago, I received a “blessing” bag from my mom, Teresa, which I promptly placed in my vehicle. She knew that I would know where to find someone who could use the items inside. It stayed in the vehicle for close to two weeks and then, one Friday afternoon I saw her. Somehow, God let me know that she was the one! Initially passing by her (due to heavy traffic), I turned into the parking lot where I could get out and approach her. She was busy collecting money from others stopped at the light, so I waited and called out to her as the light turned green and the other drivers went about their afternoon.

I asked her if I could give her the bag, which she of course welcomed. She then asked if she could give me a hug and of course I accepted! She then looked in the bag to see all the things we often take for granted – soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, etc. She looked me eye-to-eye and said that no one had ever given her anything like that before and she was very appreciative. As I walked back to the car, she looked over her shoulder and added a suggestion. A suggestion! She said that they needed socks in the winter and I told her that was a great thing for us to know and thanked her.

I got back in my car and went about my afternoon, often thinking of the lady and how truly blessed I felt for being able to give her something she could use. I also found myself rather tickled at her “suggestion,” simply due to the circumstance. As I sit here writing this, I still think of her and a big smile comes across my face.

What a blessing! I now have another and have my ears tuned to God. Again, He will show me who needs this blessing! Stay tuned to God! Shannon West
