Welcome to New York City,

Because wherever you were born, you are

a New Yorker now. With the most diverse

population, millions of us New Yorkers were

not born in this state or even this country,

but once you’re here you’re home.

Because if it’s 1am on Tuesday evening and

you want to hang a picture, eat sushi, drink

a Brooklyn micro brew, and get lucky, you

can have them all delivered, thanks to your

local hardware store, Japanese restaurant,

bodega, and “massage” parlour.

Because you can travel the world without

leaving your neighbourhood. Where else

can you stand on a street corner and hear

10 different languages spoken? And within

3 blocks encounter food from a dozen

various countries yet still be in the United

States.

Because we still get our meat from the

butcher, our fish from the fish market, our

cheese from a cheese shop, and there isn’t

a Wal-Mart or Meijers in town.

The Concrete Jungle, The Big Apple, The Capital of the World, Gotham, Empire City, The City of Dreams, TheCity That Never Sleeps.

For the love of New York

The home of multi-culture, the yellow cab, the street vendor, the skyscraper, the five boroughs, the subway, Central park, celebrity, bridges, the 24/7 city.

An Introduction to New York City

Thomas Squire Design Practice 2 OUGD505 Good is New York City 2

Food Culture Transport Architecture

New York’s urban landscape is an amalgam

of innovative styles that span the gamut

of American history, architectural and

otherwise.

A backdrop used by Hollywood, television,

photographers and artists, the New York

skyline is recognizable around the globe

as a symbol of American innovation. The

following architectural jewels make this

queen of American cities sparkle.

The cuisine of New York City comprises

many cuisines belonging to various ethnic

groups that have entered the United States

through the city. Almost all ethnic cuisines

are well represented in New York City, both

within and outside of the various ethnic

neighbourhoods. New York was also the

founding city of New York Restaurant Week

which has spread around the world due

to the discounted prices that such a deal

offers.

The culture of New York City is reflected by

the city’s size and variety. Many American

cultural movements first emerged in the

city. The Harlem Renaissance established

the African-American renaissance in the

United States. American modern dance

developed in New York in the early 20th

century. The city was the top venue for jazz

in the 1940s, expressionism in the 1950s,

and the home of hip hop, punk rock, and

the Beat Generation.

The city of New York is an important centre

for music, film, theatre, dance and visual art.

Artists have been drawn into the city by

opportunity, as the city government funds

the arts with a larger annual budget than

the National Endowment for the Arts, and

New York is a major centre of the global art

market which grew up along with national

and international media centres.

The transportation system of New York

City is a cooperation of complex systems

of infrastructure. New York City, being

the largest city in the United States, has a

transportation system which includes one

of the largest subway systems in the world,

measured by track mileage; the world’s first

mechanically ventilated vehicular tunnel,

and an aerial tramway.

Binding Foiling Stock Embossing

Similarly embossing is also another crafting

technique that also adds a luxury feel

to a publication, especially the cover

for example, I have been researching

into embossing onto a stock and also

embossing onto stock that have been

printed onto both achieve good results

however the blind emboss I think visually is

more appealing.

The main focus of the deliverables for this

brief with centre around a high specification

publication, which will be hand bound. I

have researched into a range of possible

binding method, however the content and

aesthetic of the publication will ultimately

dictate the type of binding I use.

Speciality printing processes are perfect for

adding a luxury feel to a unique, target and

high end publication, this is also something

that my target audience would expect from

such a publication. I have been researching

into foiling onto a range of different stock

with different surface textures.

Stock has been something I haven’t really

considered in detail before, However the

more I learn about the variety of different

stocks available, it’s importance becomes

ever clear to me, therefore I have been

looked into a range of stocks used in

publications, impartiality the stock used to

produce the cover.

Range and Format

The primary focus within the brief will

be to develop and create a publication

summarising the information and stories

that I find however I have been considering

traditional and non traditional ways of

presenting this information, as well as how

these formats can work together. Such as

posters and a publications, or printed and

digital. Furthermore information could be

distilled into smaller formats like leaflets,

flyers and fold-out, or other printed

ephemera that is cheaper and disposable

like Hot Dog booklets and newspapers.

Who are they? Target Audience

My primary target audience is national

and international tourists visiting or travel

to New York City. My secondary target

market is those people who already live in

New York city. The resolution to this brief

will primarily focus on targeting tourists

however the content will also be relevant

to those people living in New York who

want to explore a new perspective to

the city. The main goal in attracting and

communicating with the target audience

falls within the concept of ‘How not to a be

a tourist in New York City’ the resolution will

focus on those wanting to see the real New

York not the New York created for tourists.

More specifically my audience is a young

professional, couples and explorers of new

places who are educated, intellectual and

enjoy experiencing new things. They are

from moderately wealthy backgrounds,

however it will mostly likely appeal to

those living in the boroughs of Manhattan

and Brooklyn, furthermore the content

of the resolution will be enable everyone

to get involved regardless of economic

background due to the versatility of places

to explore in New York which cater to

everyone’s tastes and needs. They are also

like to be a creative and adventurous type

who want to see New York through a new

and interesting way.
