comments (positive and negative) will be valuable as we continue our improvement efforts. Thanks foreveryone’s hard work and customer focus.

Looking ahead, this next year will be no less challenging. The South Village “extreme makeover” is in full swing

for the next 18 months in that area of campus.

The Football Stadium will be completed in September and the coaches will move in and start practicing the team. CRI Deck I will also open this fall as construction continues on PORTAL and Student Housing Phase X. In case you thought we would get a breather when all

A couple of important themes emerged from our recentreview of the year. First, we made great strides in improving our communication with the campuscommunity. We had some excellent examples of thislast year including Housekeeping and Recycling’s

Operations communication regarding the campus-wide power outage, and our new “Construction Situation Report” that goes out to the campus on a regular basis. These and many other initiatives are helping get the word out to our customers in these changing and some-what chaotic times.

A second positive thread to our work was oursuccessful application of the “plan-act-check-plan again” methodology for all our initiatives. This ishow high performing organizations continuouslyimprove. We have many examples of how thisprocess is making us successful including the mini-bin

We conducted our bi-annual customer satisfactionsurvey in March. The results are in and the trendsare positive with an overall satisfaction rating for the Department at 91%. Recycling and Grounds receivedthe highest ratings of 96% and 95% respectively. Now we need to work on that last 9%! The survey alsogave customers an opportunity to comment and those

Colleges and universities from North Carolina and South Carolina were up for the award. However, UNC Charlotte took away top honors. Among the many attr ibutes highlighted during the award ceremony, one that stood out to the committee and fellow universit ies was the implementation of mini trash bins on campus.

In fiscal year 2011, UNC Charlotte diverted 39% of

FACILITIES MANAGEMENT | FM Workstations

FM Workstation and Share Drive TransitionWill Begin Fall 2012

S ince Phase One of the FM WorkstationSupport and Trans i t ion to ITS was implemented in December 2011 with the transition of user support calls to the ITS Help Desk, ITS has been planning Phase 2 for the t rans i t ion of our Fac i l i t i esManagement workstations to the campus domain and the share drive fi les to the campus share.

Phase Two is estimated to begin this Fall ,approximate ly November 2012. Dur ing th i s phase, our share drive fi les will be moved to the campus share and FM workstations will transit ion to the campus Windows network. Phase Two will enable the use of the NinerNET login to log into your PC files along with Outlook email on the campus share server eliminating the use of the Windows FM Password. As a reminder, thisnew FM work station transit ion provides manyadvantages including easier system updates,

software upgrades and consistent backups along with the campus standards for our Facil i t ies Management hardware.

In order to prepare for the upcoming share drive and workstations transit ion, we request that all Facil i t ies Management personnel begin cleaning up the i r My Documents , Depar tment , andPubl ic f i les and fo lders to remove no longer needed fi les off the share drive. This process will make the transit ion easier and quicker.

If you have any questions concerning this new t rans i t ion of works ta t ions and share dr ive , please feel free to contact any of the Facil i t ies Information Systems team. Thank you all for your continuous support and patience during this ongoing transit ion.

“It takes a lot o f courage to release the famil iar and seemingly secure , toembrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is Life, and in Change there is Power.” -Alan Cohen

How to Communicate Like a Pro by Nido QubeinHere are six techniques you can use to help you say things simply but persuasivelyand effectively:

1) Get your thinking straight. The f i rst ru le of p la in ta lk is to th ink before you say anything. Organize your thoughts.

2) Say what you mean. Say exact ly what you mean.

3) Get to the point. Effect ive communicators don’ t beat around the bush. I f you want someone to buy something, ask for the order. I f you want someone to do something, say exact ly what you want done.

4) Be concise. Don’t waste words. Speak plainly and br ief ly, using the shortest , most fami l iar words.

5) Be real. Each of us has a personal i ty—For maximum clar i ty, be natural , and let the real you come through. You’ l l be more convincing and much more comfortable.

6) Speak in images. Words that help people v isual ize concepts can be tremendous aids in communicat ing a message.
