‘It is a loss to everyone, but we must
appreciate what wehad and move on. Ihave lost a talented
brother.’ – Adv.Phemelo Sehunelo
} Boipelo Mere
“ALL youths have talent. Allthat needs to be done, is for thattalent to be harvested andbrought to the open.”This was the message of the
former owner of youth soccerclub Basotho Tigers, Adv.Phemelo Sehunelo, now a miningmagnate, at the funeral of thelate soccer star Richard Henye-kane.Henyekane began the road to
professional football by joiningBasotho Tigers in 1999 before heproceeded to Hellenic.Sehunelo highlighted the
challenges in soccer during thefuneral service at the ABCCemetery in Galeshewe onSaturday (11/04).Henyekane was killed in a car
crash, along with four otherpassengers, during the earlyhours of Tuesday (07/04) ontheir way from Qwaqwa toBethlehem. The other occupants of the car
were identified as Paul Mofokeng(26), Nthabiseng Motsoetsoe (20),Ayanda Matete (20) and MphoMoloi (18).The funeral service was
attended by hundreds of mour-ners, including friends andsupporters from the NorthernCape, Gauteng and the FreeState.Representatives from other
PSL clubs, Safa and governmentdepartments also paid theirrespects, including PSL chairper-son Dr Irvin Khoza.Expressing the great loss that
the soccer fraternity and theprovince had suffered, Sehunelosaid that the tragedy should be awake-up call to the province. He proposed that the Northern
Cape government play a moreactive role in nurturing youngplayers at an early age.“Yes, it is a loss to everyone,
but we must appreciate what we
had and move forward in thesoccer world.“In him, I have lost a talented
brother.”Basotho Tigers have since
been sold to the North West, where its name was laterchanged to North West Tigers in2004.Sehunelo added that the youth
should learn more from the lifeof Henyekane, who was lucky tohave been spotted at the righttime.Sehunelo prides himself in the
knowledge that he played a bigrole in ensuring that Henyekanecarved out a successful soccercareer. He was also involved in
Henyekane’s life as a legaladvisor for contractual purposeswhen he moved from BasothoTigers, to Hellenic, to GoldenArrows and to Sundowns.“The question is, are we still
going to say there was a teamcalled Basotho Tigers?“I have done my part in
producing such talent. Somebodyelse must take over now.”He said the provincial govern-
ment was not doing enough topromote soccer in the province, and emphasised that local clubshad to be subsidised in orderfor them to produce qualityplayers.Trott Moloto, the general
manager of Mamelodi Sundowns, and former coach of GoldenArrows, said it was sad indeedfor a talented person to lose hislife at such a young age.Moloto coached Henyekane at
Arrows before moving toSundowns.Henyekane reportedly followed
him to Mamelodi Sundowns.Moloto noted with approval
the support shown to the familyduring their time of sorrow byfellow soccer clubs.) Go to www.express-news formore pictures.

IT was a dream come true for AzettaTownson (31), an employee at the KolomelaMine, to be given an opportunity to buy herfirst house X a double-storey house X throughthe mine’s Social Labour Plan Project twoyears ago.
As an administration assistant at the mine, she was one of the 718 local communityemployees who got the opportunity to buystandard houses in which Anglo Americanwas reported to have invested an amount ofone million rand. The mining companypartnered with the Tsantsabane LocalMunicipality, which allocated land inPostmasburg for the construction of thehouses, making Townson’s dream of becom-ing a homeowner come true. As part of anintegrated approach that allowed the housesto form part of the current communitywithout creating a separate mining town, theproject was further reported to have ad-dressed housing challenges within the localmunicipality. Townson moved from hersingle-storey home in Postdene, where shegrew up, into her own 120 m² house consist-ing of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, withother comforts like ceilings, air conditioningand solar heating.
“Now I have my own big house. It is ablessing for me to be able to support myselfand raise my first child in a very differentand better environment compared to minewhen I was her age,” she said proudly.
The young mother also got the opportunityof being visited by the minister of MineralResources, Ngoako Ramahlodi, on Thursday(09/04) during the launch of the housingproject.
According to the CEO of the KolomelaMine, Norman Mbazima, the housing projectnot only created employment for approxi-mately 3 000 semi-skilled and skilled workers, but had been so successful that it wasawarded the provincial and national GovanMbeki Award from the Department ofHuman Settlements in 2013 as the bestsubsidised housing model.
He added that the project was an effort toeliminate hostels and create access tohousing for all mine workers.
“This is an achievement for all of us. Thisis an indication that the province and thecountry can achieve more through thesekinds of partnerships,” he added.
Kumba’s Social and Community Strategy isaimed at supporting government in address-ing the gaps in the following key focus areas:education and skills, health and socialwelfare, youth, enterprise development andinfrastructure development.
Highlighting the important role thatKumba had played in developing Postmas-burg, the premier of the Northern Cape,Sylvia Lucas, said that the town needed thiskind of infrastructure.
“We sincerely believe that they deserve tobe appreciated for their stability in thispreviously turbulent town,” she said.

THE pantsula dance group Black Conversewill soon be making another appearance onnational television.Hailing from Galeshewe, the group of four
pantsula dancers’ spirit were not dampenedby their elimination from the dancecompetition Step up or Step out in 2014.The team members, Joey Steenkamp,
Emannuel Molatlhwe, Steven Mpadi andLucas Koper, who claim to have returnedhome better equipped after their eliminationfrom the top-seven stage of the competition, will be competing in the upcoming StumboStomp Amapantsula dance competition thatwill be broadcast live on SABC1.They plan to use their experience gained
from the previous competitions in theupcoming event taking place from 13 May toAugust.According to the excited members, they
were over the moon when they received thecall that theirs was chosen as the bestdance video that qualified for the 13-episodedance show.Being reportedly the only group chosen
from the Northern Cape, they will becompeting with 52 other pantsula dancegroups from around the country.“We are excited and nervous at the same
time to have been given another opportuni-ty to shine.“We will strive to scoop this one. I mean,
if we made it to the top seven in the Stepup and Step out dance competition, wherewe were competing against many otherdance categories, we can just dance our wayto the top,” said Steenkamp. The team revealed how they would use
the experience and feedback from previousworkshops to improve upon and play withtheir original dance moves.“We are eliminating and improving on
some of our dance moves.“We also learned the importance of
expressions, including how to manage theuse of our energy effectively.”The group is well known for their
trademark of expressing joy as they dance, which they were highly admired for duringthe Step up or Step out competition. Themembers said that was a way of alsomotivating each other and displaying thepassion that they had for what they did.“This win is for us because it will be a
straight pantsula dance competition. Weknow almost all the challenges of dancecompetitions and have an understanding ofwhat we are doing and where we are goingwith this.“We have a more positive attitude to push
forward through our passion for dancing. We do have a future in dancing and we aregoing nowhere near jail,” added Steenkamp. The group uses the backyard of one of
their members’ homes to practice. Alsoacknowledging their fear that pantsuladance is fading away, they highlighted theirstruggle to make ends meet. They also said it was a challenge to host
concerts to raise funds, due to the violencethat seemed to break out during localconcerts.“The thing is we cannot afford to hire
security during our events, which leaves theaudience and supporters at risk.”Leonie Koper, mother of group member
Lucas, allows the group to use her backyardfor practice. She expressed her pride in thegroup and promised to continue meetingthem halfway.“Us parents must continue to show
support for our children, because they havekept their heads up for ten years throughthick and thin. We are aware that only oneof the members is employed, thus they needour support during fund-raising,” she said.“It is better for them to use their talent to
survive instead of robbing people atknife-point like their peers do.”The group highlighted how they had to
give up their dream of sharing their skillswith the younger generation due to a lackof resources and space.“But we are not prevented in any way to
do outreach programmes, like at orphanagesand on Mandela Day.”

EARTH DAY will be celebrated on 22April and many countries, including SouthAfrica, are gearing up to honour the earth.
As a theoretical concept, this shouldmake a significant difference in theenvironment as well as people’s mindsetabout how we affect the planet we live on.
Unfortunately, one day a year does noteven begin to rectify the damage that weinflict daily.
The recent uproar caused by the city ofJohannesburg’s Sisonke Project is a primeexample of municipalities’ disregard forthe impact inner-city waste managementhas on the inner-city environment. TheSisonke Project was launched on 12October 2007.
With fanfare the municipality and thethen executive mayor of Johannesburg,Amos Masondo, announced that the systemwould guarantee a cleaner and moresanitary environment. Skip to the present.
The stench that emanates from theunderground concrete sleeves is nowunbearable.
The theory behind the project is thatusers throw their refuse in strategically-placed rubbish bins connected to under-ground concrete containers. When thecontainers are full, specially adaptedtrucks will lift them out of the ground, empty and replace them. This takes aboutten minutes.
The concept sounds idyllic and it hascost the city R5,5 million to implement.
Yet, the system only works when thetrucks actually pick up the rubbish. Andthe trucks can only pick up the rubbishwhen they are serviced and perform theirduties. According to E-News, there iscurrently only one truck in operation.
Now look at the rubbish situation inKathu. It seems as if a similar attitude torefuse removal is taken by the currentmunicipality.
Rubbish removal does happen promptlyon occasion, but proper disposal takes aback seat.
Dump trucks take rubbish to an over-flowing rubbish dump and the situationdeteriorates from there. The refuse at thedump is disposed of in a heap behind thedesignated dumping zone.
The final outrage is that this heap isthen set alight, and the air is filled withnoxious fumes.
The local municipality should take ahard look at their policies regardinggarbage removal and the reality of howtheir methods are affecting the environ-ment.
One learns from your leaders, andcurrently the example is not up to EarthDay standards.

ANDREW LOUW, DA provincial leader:
THE debate on the city’s statues must besettled in the spirit of reconciliation.Statues, names and symbols do matter.
Creating inclusive public spaces, withstatues that reflect the shared values of ademocratic South Africa, should be part ofmunicipal spatial planning. And we shouldfollow in Madiba’s footsteps by incorpora-ting the past into an inclusive vision forthe future. The apartheid government and the
colonial government which preceded it,created a lot of evil in South Africa.Overcoming the legacy of apartheid shouldnot be reduced to a contest to see who canvandalise the most statues.Look at the Honoured Dead Memorial,
which was commissioned by Cecil JohnRhodes and commemorates soldiers whodied defending Kimberley in the Anglo-Boer War.Rudyard Kipling’s inscription refers to
the victors being those who died for thecity. Perhaps we can rededicate thismemorial to commemorate all those whohad died in the struggle for freedom. It is time for the city of Kimberley to
convene an open consultation session withall residents.Use the model of the Inclusive City
Campaign that the DA launched in CapeTown.Let us gather together and discuss what
we, as residents, want to see happen withour public spaces.

THE Easter Tournament thatwas held at different sportsgrounds around the Sol PlaatjeMunicipal area proved thatmore still needs to be done toimprove the quality of soccerin the region. The tournament, played from
3 to 6 April, was reportedly agreat way to improve the skillsof young players and keepthem away from social ills intheir communities.According to Winston
Mondela, chairperson of the SolPlaatje Local Football Associa-tion, the tournament got off toa good start. The event washosted for the first time as apromotional league for thesenior division teams.Mondela said that the
association had partnered with
the Department of Sport, Artsand Culture (DSAC), whichsponsored the trophies for thewinning teams. The tournament saw Ghetto
United emerging as the leaguewinners after beating BrightonFC 2-0 in the final game.Mondela promised to improve
the next Easter Tournament bynegotiating a better deal withtheir sponsor, the DSAC.“These are older players and
they expect to participate insuch tournaments for a moneyprize, not only for trophies.“It it not motivation enough
for them to play for a trophy, because local teams need themoney prizes to maintainthemselves.“We need to sit down with
the department to negotiate abetter deal and look for moresponsorships,” said Mondela.
