Photo by Thomas J. McKillen. Menomonee Falls residents said farewell to a group of students from Japan who were visiting the area for 10 days last month. The high school age students were from Saijo City. A farewell dinner was held for the students at the Menomonee Falls High School cafeteria March 29. Robyn Turtenwald, one the local residents involved with hosting the students, said the exchange was started in 1997 by Mieko Ikeno, a teacher at the school at the time. Turtenwald said Saijo High School students have visited in the past while Menomonee Falls tries to send a delegation to Saijo City every other year. During their time in the village, the Ja panese students stopped at a School Board meeting, toured the Village Hall and Police Department, the Cousin’s Corporate headquar- ters and Tailored Label Products. “Everywhere we went with our guests this week the village of Menomonee Falls was very hospitable,” Turtenwald said. Jim Weitzer, one of the o rganizers, t hanked the f amilies who hosted the Japanese students during the 10 days. Gary Kiltz, director of curriculum and technology and previously Menomonee Falls High School principal, said he was “proud to be high school principal because of pro- grams like this.” “When we have the opportunity to have our students go to other places like Saijo or host students from places like Saijo I think it improves us all,” Kiltz said.
