AT 97, Lizzy Moeng is as old as the

hills, but she is still going strong. She

celebrates her 98th birthday on Sat-

    urday.

    Gogo Moeng of the Bloemanda

    Township, Bloemfontein, is one of

the oldest women alive in the coun-

try. She is older than the ailing

    former president of South Africa,

Nelson Mandela (94), who is fighting

for his life in the Mediclinic Heart

    Hospital in Pretoria.

Moeng has ten children two of

    them have already passed away

    and many grandchildren and great-

    grandchildren. She enjoys telling

stories about the way they grew up

back in the apartheid days to her

    grandchildren.

Im happy to still be alive today.

Im also grateful to have lived almost

into the second century, though I

dont know why God is still keeping

me here. Im very thankful for every

day. Ive made it through alright,

    Moeng told Express.

Widowed in 1977, Moeng said the

secret to her good health was eating

    healthy food likewhitemeat andveg-

etables, and not to indulge in beer.

She added that respecting God and

her elders were ingredients for her

    longevity.

Im from a very religious family

and I have a relationship with God.

I was taught to respect other people

when I was still a teenager. I never

    indulged in alcohol and smoking.

But I occasionally took a sip of

    umqombothi during traditional cere-

    monies, said the ageing woman.

Described as a strong, patient and

    religious woman, Moeng said she

had never held any grudges against

    other people.

I dont let anybody spoil my day.

I simply forgive and forget and it has

helped me to live longer because a

sore heart can age you 20 years in

    just 1 year, she said.

Moeng, who can still walk on her

own and bath herself, said she en-

    joyed reading newspapers.

Im able to read and write. I at-

tended school until st. 9 (gr. 11). I like

    reading newspapers and maga-

    zines.

    Her daughter Motlagomang Mok-

gosi (74) said her mom had taught

her many lessons about life during

    her almost 98 years.

She is a great mother and she

raised us verywell. We learnt the im-

    portance of patience and discipline

from her. She believes in being hon-

est with people and never trying to

    deceive them.

She told us somewhere along the

line everyone has problems and we

should be as helpful as we can, she

    said.

Our wish is for God to keep her

here until she reaches 100 years.

She is so amazing. We are plan-

ning to have a little something for

    her onSaturday. She deserves every-

    thing she gets, Motlagomang con-

    cluded.

    THE nationwide search for the

    most energy efficient South Afri-

cans to take part in the 2013 eta

    Awards has begun.

The eta Awards seek to reward

    exceptional, innovative and out-

    standing efforts by individuals,

    students, companies and other in-

stitutions in the efficient use of en-

    ergy.

49M, the sponsors of two catego-

ries of the eta Awards, namely the

    energy saving in households and

    energy efficiency awareness cate-

gories for two years in a row, aims

    to honour exceptional South Afri-

    cans whove made energy efficien-

cy a priority. The winner in each

    category could receiveR30 000, and

R5 000 goes to each of the runners-

    up in each category.

    The household category rewards

    those who have implemented crea-

    tive and effective energy efficiency

    applications athome, therebydras-

    tically reducing their energy con-

    sumption and costs.

    The awareness category rewards

those who have made a significant

    andvisible impact in spreading the

word on the importance of reliev-

ing the growing pressure on the

    electricity grid.

    Calling for entries, 49M spokes-

    person, Andrew Etzinger, said it

was humbling to see the commit-

ment of South Africans to the ener-

gy cause, judging by the quality of

    entries in the previous years.

For the past 23 years the awards

have exposed us to individuals and

    organisations that have done ster-

ling work in terms of energy con-

servation. It is such initiatives that

49M calls for, and we encourage all

    South Africans to support the

cause by taking part in initiatives

such as the eta Awards, he said.

Entries for the eta Awards close

TATE MAKGOE, the Free State MEC for

    Education, has welcomed Vodacoms

investment in education at the opening of

    an Information and Communication

    Technology (ICT) Resource Centre in

    Thaba Nchu.

The centre which is the ninth across

the country was unveiled at the Old

Teachers College last Tuesday, thanks to a

    partnership between Vodacom and the

Department of Basic Education. It will be

the hub of the districts teacher-training

programme and has been equipped with a

computer classroom and an internet caf.

We want to assure the leadership of

Vodacom that we appreciate what you

have done. We also want to assure you

that the best return on your investment

will come from the Free State, Makgoe

    said proudly.

We are going to make sure that each

and every child has access to this equip-

ment. We are going to make sure that each

and every teacher has access to this

equipment. To our teachers, dont be afraid

to break the machines (computers) we

have trained two guys to fix them. So you

can break them, said the MEC, who had

everybody in stitches in a packed hall.

I dont mean literally throw them and

break them. All I mean is dont be afraid

to press because you think you were born

before technology. With ITC we can all

catch up. So, lets make sure that we use

this facility, Makgoe said on a serious

    note.

The programme is set to transform

teaching and learning in the classroom

    through the use of technology.

The centre, which is part of Vodacoms

    Mobile Education Programme, is expected

to train 120 teachers from 30 schools

annually in the Free State region. Teachers

will be trained in the basic use of technolo-

gy and will have access to curriculum

content and teaching aids through cloud

    computing, which is an internet-based

    warehouse of educational content.

    This initiative focuses on teacher

development, one of the most critical

elements in the education value chain.

This programme offers a model whereby

South Africa can advance in the area of

education through the effective use of

    communication technology, Maya Makan-

jee, chief officer: corporate affairs at

Vodacom and chairman of the Vodacom

    Foundation, said.

Launched in October 2011, the Vodacom

    Mobile Education Programme was devel-

oped to help the Department of Basic

Education meet its goal of exposing

learners to ICT and to give teachers access

    to quality teaching resources.

The programme not only levels the

playing field for disadvantaged schools that

often dont have the same quality of

teaching material that urban areas have,

but it also ensures that communities have

access to ICT and the internet. This is

especially exciting for us because it

mirrors our commitment to ensuring that

Vodacom puts the power of the internet

into everyones hands, Makanjee said, and

added that the centre was connected to

Vodacoms head office in Midrand through

    a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

This serves as a pipeline for informa-

tion that connects and delivers content to

    participating schools and teachers. It

provides a platform for creating a commu-

nity of teachers who can communicate to

share ideas and resources, she continued.

The schools, buildings and teachers have

been identified by the Free State Depart-

ment of Education while all the technology

    elements are supplied by Vodacom.

The Thaba Nchu centre has been fully

equipped with a computer room housing 50

    computer terminals, educational aids,

    internet connectivity and training facili-

ties. The community of Thaba Nchu will

also have access to the centre and will be

able to use the internet and make use of

    e-learning houses free of charge.

    Vodacom has committed to supply

content hosting and free internet connec-

tivity for the next three years. Connectivi-

ty includes the establishment of a control-

led gateway to the internet for each

province. This will allow for easy commu-

    nication among the teachers.

    Malehlwa Mothibi, the centre manager,

said they would ensure that security was wa-

ter-tight at the centre day and night.

    Leading e-learning service providers, Mi-

crosoft, Cisco and Mindset, have partnered

with Vodacom to provide the centre with soft-

    ware, programme content, certification and

    training, and educational curriculum con-

    tent.

    These digital educational resources are

    hosted on the website www.digitalclass-

    room.co.za.

IN its endeavour to market the

    province and develop tourism,

    the Free State Tourism Authori-

ty (FSTA) sent a delegation to

    attend the Union Internationale

    Motonautique (UIM) F2 Sweden

    World Championships, which

    was hosted in Stockholm last

    month.

The UIM F2 is the world

    federation body of power boating

and has a series of competitions

over a period of 12 months that

    are hosted in different countries.

    During this years F2 series

    information for the province on

    how international countries

    worked in preparation and the

It needs to be mentioned that

the FSTA plays a pivotal role in

    the development of power

    boating sport for young, pre-

    viously disadvantaged children

    within the province as well

as the hosting of F1 national

    powerboat championships in

    the province, Lerumo said.

He said the team was also

    interested in how Sweden

    handled their developmental

    programmes with the view

    to adopt best practices that

    would see the provincial

    development programme pro-

    gressing to a higher trajectory.

    The FSTA will monitor the

    standings over the next months

to assess how the Free State

    Baba Racing team driver

    Wynand de Jager will perform

    over the series.

    The FSTA wishes De Jager

luck in the next series and

    INVESTEC spent R340 000 by

    rewarding 40 matric learners

    from Qwaqwa who had obtained

    distinctions in Physical Science

    and Mathematics in 2012.

    They were awarded R10 000

each, certificates and a trophy at

    the 2013 Investec Qwaqwa

    Promaths Awards ceremony

which was held at the Beacon

    Secondary School on Thursday.

    The awards ceremony was

    organised by the Free State

    Department of Education in

    partnership with the Kutlwanong

    Centre for Maths, Science and

    Technology.

A total of 13 learners obtained

    distinctions in Mathematics, the

    other 4 distinctions in Science

    while 23 obtained distinctions in

    both Maths and Science.

    The top achiever award was

    snatched up by Morena Tsotetsi

(18), who is now a Civil Engineer-

ing student at the University of

    Cape Town.

    Tsotetsi, who had completed

his matric at Beacon, obtained six

    distinctions and 86% in Science.

He said he was happy with

    the achievement and added

that it showed God was in control.

I am one of those people who

believe that I am who I am

    because of God. I acknowledge

    Him for guiding me because

without Him I would not have

    been here, he said.

    Tsotetsi said obtaining six

distinctions had not been a walk

in the park and added that he

    had to make serious decisions

    beforehand.

There is no secret to my

success. I just stuck to the basics.

Kutlwanong has played a big role

in my life and I want to thank

    them.

I am happy that finally my

hard work had paid off, he said.

    Tate Makgoe, the Free State

MEC for Education, said they had

    the best teachers in Qwaqwa.

    He said Investec had contribut-

ed more than R2 million to the

    programme and thanked them for

    that.

The gr. 12 learners in Qwaqwa

    are brilliant in Mathematics and

    for this reason theyve been

    obtaining 80%.

I think we are helping children

to realise their dreams and we are

also helping South Africa to be

    better.

    Getting good qualifications is

up to you, but once you have

    better qualifications, you can

    come back and develop Qwaqwa,

    he said.

    Makgoe said one day Qwaqwa

    would be different because those

    children would do what they

    could not achieve.

    He said they had fought

    against apartheid and for that

reason had to make South Africa

    prosper.

The class of 2012 is the best

ever, and for the first time can

contest the best in the country,

    he said.

Fani Titi, the chairperson of the

    board of directors: Investec, said

they had decided to help the

    schools in Qwaqwa because he

was born and bred in the small

    village Makgalaneng. He, however,

    pointed out that their programme

    assisted the whole of South

    Africa.

    Our programme identifies

    learners from the schools and

    helps them with Mathematics and

    Physical Science these are

learners from gr. 10 to gr. 12.

    Today, we are awarding their

hard work of last year, he said.

    Titi pointed out that Mathemat-

ics and Science were very impor-

tant because a number of things

in the world were controlled by

    both including Accounting.

We would have loved to help

learners from gr. R, but our

budget is limited and for this

reason we start at gr. 10. Our

    education system is improving

and this is what we have been

    aiming at, he said.

He said they had been sponsor-

    ing Kutlwanong for four years

and wanted to get more sponsors

so that they could help more

    learners.

have served a suspension following his send-off

against the same opponents in the 2012 Afcon

were penalised for fielding a player who did not

meet all the requirements during their group E

emerged that the player in question, Charly

Moussono, had represented Cameroon in the

2006 Beach World Cup in Brazil and thus made

Beyene in their 1-2 victory against Botswana.

Subsequent to that, the president of the Ethio-

acknowledged the mistake and announced that

ing elections in September. Federation secre-

    tary-general Ashenafi Ejegu has already

stepped down. How Iwish all other bungling ad-

    ministrators can learn from this.

Now let me remind you how other unscripted

dramas have panned out. The 2013 Africa Cup

of Nations finalists Burkina Faso, Gabon and

Sudan have also been sanctioned for violating

Fifa statutes. Burkina Fasowere found guilty of

    fielding controversial Cameroonian national

Herve Zengue in their goalless draw against

    Congo-Brazaville.

    NEWS

    ADMINISTRATIVE bungles within football

federations on theAfrican continent have again

dominated headlines. It is shocking that so

many federations have failed to adhere to basic

standards set by the world football governing

body. In recent days a dozen cases have been in-

vestigated by Fifa and all of the accused were

found guilty as charged. Something is amiss . . .

At the time of writing this column Fifa had

just announced that Togo had been found guilty

for fielding an ineligible player during their 2-0

    victory againstCameroon in the 2014FifaWorld

Cup qualifiers. But that match outcome has

been reversed. Instead, Cameroon have been

awarded a 0-3 victory due to Togos costly blun-

der of fielding Jacques Alexys Romao who had

already accumulated two yellow cards in the

    previousmatches against Libya andCameroon.

As a result, Romao should have missed the re-

    turn leg against Cameroon.

It does not end there. Ethiopia, as we know,

al Guinea made it clear that they would appeal

against an unpublished Fifa sanction. It is not

a secret that the country normally uses football

    mercenaries in their matches.

In the starting line-up against Cape Verde all

the players, but one Mamadou Konate were

not from Equatorial Guinea. It is evident that

some team managers, coaching staff and the

powers that be are not doing their job. Not so

long ago Bafana Bafana players celebrated the

qualification that never was. They did not read

    or understand the competition rules.

But on a more puzzling note. The Fifa Emer-

    gency Committee has provisionally suspended

    the Cameroonian Football Association (Feca-

foot) due to government interference. The fall-

out emanates from Fecafoot elections last

month where Iya Mohammed was re-elected to

the presidential role, despite being detained for

allegedly embezzling funds of the countrys

    state-owned Cotton Development Company.

Fifa was not pleased with governments inter-

vention. It can only be in Africa where an ac-

cused person whos in detention can be voted

into a top football position. Yes, I understand

that one is innocent until proven guilty by a

    court of law. Stay blessed.

THE Unemployment Insurance Act, 2001 (Act

no. 63 of 2001) came into operation on 1 April

2002. The purpose of the act was to establish an

Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) to which

employers and employees contribute and from

which employees who become unemployed, or

their beneficiaries as the casemay be, can bene-

fit. In thisway, theharmful economic and social

effects of unemployment can be alleviated.

Over the years, the fund has grown immense-

ly to overR83 billion.During the economicmelt-

down, the fund responded by contributing to

training lay-offs by helping companies that

were facing economic distress to cope.

Rather than employees being laid off, they

were retrained and absorbed back by their com-

panies. Furthermore, jointly with the mining

sector, the fund is contributing to the housing

    development inNorth-West. Inorder to improve

    servicedeliveryby the fund, theUnemployment

Insurance Board decided to recommend to the

    ministerofLabour that theact shouldbeamend-

ed. The minister tabled the bill to parliament

and the cabinet has approved the Unemploy-

    ment Insurance Amendment Bill.

The proposed amendments to the Unemploy-

ment Insurance Bill need to address the issue

    ofworkerswhoarepresently excluded in theact

and by so doing, to conform with international

    labour organisation standards; improve pay-

ment of benefits to contributors; and extend the

period within which benefits are payable.

This is the second amendment to the act fol-

lowing the first amendment made in 2003.

The proposed amendments to the act deal

with a number of issues namely how to include

learners, public servants and foreign workers

who are currently not covered in terms of the

provisions of the Unemployment Insurance Act

    as it stands presently.

The amendments also seek to extend the peri-

8months to 12months, and also extend the peri-

amendments also seek to give powers to the ap-

THE much-loved Poelo Ntseki has died after

a short illness. Ntseki, who was the senior

communications officer in the office of the

    Mangaung Metro Municipalitys executive

mayor, Thabo Manyoni, passed away last

    Tuesday.

We received with sadness and a grave

sense of loss news of the passing away of Nt-

seki. He was one of our best employees. His

contribution to the ongoing transformation of

the communication space will be greatly

missed, Qondile Khedama, the director of

    communications at the Mangaung Metro,

    said.

    Ntseki executed his responsibilities with

diligence and courage. He was a unique blend

within the space of communications. He re-

fused to lead from the front, but produced the

    stars.

Khedama still remembers his first encoun-

    ter with the fallen soldier.

On my first day of work at Mangaung four

years ago, he said to me: All we want at Man-

gaung is the face of the institution; everything

in the background, Ill take care of.

Khedama said Ntseki had avoided the lime-

light at all costs and had been more comforta-

ble dealing with all the logistics to ensure that

    the work was done.

In the four years that we worked together,

he kept his private life private, but never

failed to mention his children. His profession-

    al lifewasa fusionof technocracyandcreativi-

ty. This way he could visualise a project and

stillmake it easy to implement despite govern-

    ment bureaucracy.

Khedama further said that itwas impossible

to describe the life of Ntseki without referring

to hiswarm, humble and peaceful personality.

He leaves us at a time when the Mangaung

Metro is taking centre stage in the media, an

industry which he loved. His contribution as

an employee, as a colleague and most of all as

a creative communicator will be sorely

    missed.

Im convinced that both government com-

municators and the media fraternity he had

worked so closely with will miss this giant.

KNOWN for its conscious music, Bloemfon-

tein-based Afro-Pop group Alah Yen has

recorded a song for the 94-year-old ailing

    statesman, Nelson Mandela.

The group says they want their music to

play an integral part in South African

    society as effectively demonstrated by

freedom stalwarts who used struggle songs

to ensure an equal opportunity nation.

    Former President Nelson Mandela is

fighting for his life in the Mediclinic Heart

Hospital in Pretoria and he remains in a

critical condition suffering from a recurring

    lung infection.

The song, titled Halala Madiba, is part of

their upcoming album due to be released

    soon.

According to Ayanda Roda, Alah Yens

publicist and manager, the song speaks

about the role Madiba played in ensuring

that all South Africans receive a better

education, equal opportunities and that the

rainbow nation belongs to all those who

    live in it.

This is the time we can show our love

and support to Mandelas family especially

when things are so difficult for them.

Moreover, as the arts and culture fraterni-

ty, we can only pass and show our love

through music by using it as a tool to

    comfort Mandelas family, Roda said.

The group also told Express they wanted

to honour his immense contribution to

the liberation of South Africa from apart-

    heid.

We need to honour the man and his

    goodwill.

As South Africans we would not be

where we are today if he did not fight for

    our freedom.

The song was also inspired by the

speech Madiba gave when he was inaugu-

rated as the first black president of the

country in 1994, Lehlohonolo Mokoena, the

    groups leader, said.

Social networks have also been abuzz

with the groups fans raving about the

    song.

proceeds from the song will be donated to

    THIS past weekend saw the

    Skateboarding for Hope Tour hit

    the Loch Logan Waterfront Mall

    in Bloemfontein. Skateboarding

    enthusiasts from across the

    province had an opportunity to

    showcase their tricks on Sunday.

    With the perfect weather and

    more than 70 skaters participating

in the jamm sessions, the event

    was a huge success.

    The Skateboarding for Hope

    initiative was launched by the

    Northern Cape provincial govern-

ment to offer South African youth

    the opportunity to challenge

    themselves mentally and physical-

    ly.

    The programme aims to intro-

duce youth to skateboarding as a

    healthy, affordable and accessible

    lifestyle alternative, while creating

    a strong youth culture centred

    around mutual respect and

    intercultural cohesiveness.

    We have been increasingly

impressed by the skills and talent

    of local skateboarders and with

the speed of growth of this sport

in the Northern Cape and Free

State. During the past couple of

    years, we have seen skateboarding

    gaining an ever greater popularity

    and providing our youth with

    incredible opportunities, John

    Block, Northern Cape MEC for

    Finance, Economic Development

    and Tourism, told Express.

    The Bloemfontein activation

was an ideal chance for more

    youngsters in our neighbouring

    province to learn about this

    exhilarating sport. Over the next

    couple of months, this initiative

will also stop in the Southern

    Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the

    Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and

    the Western Cape and bring

skateboarding to the youth of the

    country, Block said.

    One talented skateboarder won

a wild card entry into the

    upcoming World Skateboarding

    Championships to be held in

    Kimberley in September.

    According to the organisers,

    the days action will include

    skateboarding clinics, demos,

    best trick competitions with cash

    prizes and skateboarding

    merchandise up for grabs.

    Expert skateboarders will be

    conducting training sessions to

    show novice skateboarders the

    basic moves. Kids from local

    childrens homes and disadvan-

    taged communities will be

invited to form part of the fun

and will be kitted out with

    skateboards and merchandise.

    FOCUSON CECIL NURSE

    THROUGH understanding the importance

of good ergonomic office furniture solu-

tions, Cecil Nurse continues to source,

    design and manufacture products that

allow office workers to adjust furnishings

to their optimal specification, a definite

necessity within areas where more and

more people are required to share work

    stations.

    By assessing the organisational working

environments of all their customers, Cecil

Nurse is able to provide functional,

    effective and productive workspace

    solutions.

But ergonomics also takes into consider-

ation the psychology of the worker and

their ability to think reason and solve

problems. Ergonomic health in the office

    environment encompasses various ele-

    ments.

    Workspace factors include lighting,

    air quality, temperature and acoustics,

which all affect our physical and mental

    comfort, and contribute towards delivery

    or non-delivery, happy or irritable

    staff.

Ergonomic solutions can be simple and

    straightforward to apply. Often small

changes such as altering the height of a

chair is all that is needed to make a

    considerable difference to an individuals

    comfort levels.

The Enjoy chair range brings extraordi-

nary economy to luxury office seating.

Sharing many of the features of the

    top-range ergonomic chair models, the

    Enjoy office chair provides intensive

    8-hour a day comfort.

With unique autoflex zones for back and

lumbar support and a range of adjustments

using the ingeniously simple single lever

    control to provide personalised comfort,

the Enjoy chair is beautifully designed to

utilise a synchro tilt mechanism with

three positional lock, seat slide and

    pneumatic height adjustment.

Height, depth and angle adjustable arms

and adjustable headrest are all in one

    very unique ergonomic chair.

The Flo Monitor Arm, imported from

Britain by Cecil Nurse, has a unique

design that offers range and ease of

movement and sets it apart from all

    other monitor supports.

The ergonomic design of FLO allows

the user to move the dynamic monitor

arm, which is compatible with the I-Pad,

    into virtually any position required.

From having a tablet, notebook, in a

upright viewing position, the arm allows

THE South African Football Association (Safa)

has acknowledged that youth football develop-

ment is a key performance area for football de-

    velopment in South Africa.

    The organisation further acknowledges that

there are youth football development pro-

grammes throughout the country that are focus-

ing on the football development of both girls and

boys. The newly developed Technical Master

Plan has identified youth football development

as an important pillar to enhance the prowess

    of South African Football.

Safa, therefore, requests that all youth foot-

    ball development programmes, youth football

    academies, football programmes of excellence

and any other football related development pro-

    grammes register with them.

This registration processwill enhance the Sa-

fa database aswell as assist in the identification

of our hidden football talent in the country.

Safa and the Safa Development Agency

(SDA) want to capture all academies, schools of

development or any project that is in the com-

munity to place them on our database so that

when people contact us wanting these institu-

    tionsweareable topoint themin the rightdirec-

    tion.

Also so that we can provide them with sup-

port, and, to a large extent, they can apply to the

    2010FifaLegacyTrustFund for funding.Wewill

also grade themaccording to the different levels

    ofbronze, silverorgold, dependingonwhat they

offer and how they offer it.

Perhaps a crucial point is that we will also

be in a position to know which academies are

operating and we can get rid of the fly-by-

nights, Fran Hilton-Smith, acting technical di-

    rector at Safa, said.

We want to make sure that all the projects

are following the plans of the SDAwith regards

to the Technical Master Plan. And that is why

we are urging all the academies to register with

Safa. In that way we can assist them to develop

    and provide service to Safa.

THE Cheetahs have been boosted by the an-

nouncement that Springbok Willie le Roux

extended his contract at the franchise for a

    further two years.

French and Japanese clubs were hunting

the services of the fleet-footed back, but his

    recent inclusion as Springbok fullbackmade

the decision to stay easier. Cheetahs coach,

Naka Drotsk, confirmed the news to Ex-

reportedly had to choose between the Chee-

tahs, Sharks and Western Province, and ac-

cording to Volksblads sources, a massive

THE tenth anniversary of the Engen

Knockout Challenge proved to be very

special for the Harmony Academy as they

clinched the championship for a record

seventh time in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Staged at Windmill Park, Grey College,

the young, talented side from Welkom beat

first-time finalist, Brebner High School, 2-0

    in an entertaining match.

Whilst the local team put up a good

performance and were strong in defence,

they just could not match the firepower of

    Harmony up front.

Harmonys win was their seventh in

eight competitive finals at this event and

has not been matched by any other team

around the country. The teams champion-

ship goals came from the boots of Mandla

    Masangane and Buti Mokele.

This years winners were rewarded with

    a champions trophy, gold medals, a R10 000

cheque and bragging rights as the tourna-

    ment champions.

    The runners-up, Brebner High School,

were also handsomely rewarded with a

R2 500 cheque as well as tournament silver

    medals.

    National selector, Duncan Crowie, and

his technical team were on hand to observe

    the competitors throughout the tournament

    and evaluated individuals, referees and

    teams who displayed exceptional qualities

in the sport. Identified recipients were

later awarded with trophies and recogni-

    tion prizes.

Tyrone Mondi of Brebner stood out as

one of the star performers of the tourna-

ment and was awarded with not only the

    Engen Ten-Year Anniversary Award, where

he will be flown to Johannesburg to attend

    a high-performance programme hosted by

the the University of Pretorias High-Per-

    formance Centre, but also deservedly

received the Player of the Tournament

Award for his exemplary skill and sports-

    manship.

    The Engen Knockout Challenge has

grown from strength to strength in the past

ten years and we are proud to have been a

part of contributing to the growth of

    community upliftment and individuals

through soccer. We are extremely proud to

see this tournament grow to become one of

the most prestigious youth programmes in

the country which over the years has

unearthed a host of talented players who

now are applying their trade within the

    professional ranks, said Brad Bergh,

    group sponsorship manager of Engen

    the legacy of Madiba.

    The test match

    forms part of a bonan-

    za sports programme

    which will include a

    friendly soccer inter-

    national between

    Bafana Bafana and

    Burkina Faso at the

    same venue, a music

    concert and cultural

    activities.

    Oregan Hoskins,

    Saru president,

    praised the efforts of

    Fikile Mbalula, the

    Sports minister, to

    honour the ailing

    Madiba.

    On behalf of Saru

    and the rugby frater-

    nity I want to congra-

    tulate Mbalula and

    the Department of

    Arts and Culture for

    launching this

    unique event. We are

    extremely glad to be

    part of such a unique

    initiative, said

    Hoskins.

    I cannot think of a

    better way for us as

    sports people to hon-

    our the legacy of

    Mandela. By putting

    two of South Africas

    most popular sports,

    with contrasting cul-

    tural heritages, onto

    the same field on the

    same day we hope to

    recapture the Spirit

    of 2010 when the

    Bulls took Vodacom

    Super Rugby to the

    Orlando Stadium.

    Madiba is an in-

    spiration to many

    people around the

    world, not only in

    South Africa. Saru

    and the Springboks

    are extremely hon-

    oured to be involved

    in a programme that

    will honour his lega-

    cy, he added.

    Rugby salutes

    you, Tata Madiba,

    and today I re-dedi-

    cate our game to liv-

    ing the values you so

    nobly portray toler-

    ance, inclusiveness

    and nation-building.

    The Bafana Bafana

    game will kick off at

13:30 and it will be fol-

    lowed by rubgy in a

    packed programme.

    A music concert

    starts immediately

    after the Springboks

    match.

    Greg Peters, San-

    zar CEO, said: We

    are supportive of the

    forthcoming Nelson

    Mandela Sports Day

    and believe it will

    prove a momentous

    occasion for South

    Africa.

    We sincerely

    thank the South Afri-

    can Government and

    South African Rugby

    Union for maintain-

    ing open channels of

    communication and

    ensuring all stake-

    holders remained in-

    formed throughout

    the planning process.

    Sanzar is also ap-

    preciative of the Free

    State Rugby Union

    and the people of

    Bloemfontein for be-

    ing so accommodat-

    ing to the venue

    change that sees the

    South Africa versus

    Argentina test moved

    to Johannesburg.

    We trust thewhole

    nation will support

    the initiative as the

    Springboks and Bafa-

    na Bafana line up in

    auniquedoublehead-

    er to celebrate awide-

    ly-revered and much-

    loved icon, said Pe-

    ters.

    Meanwhile, Luis

    Castillo, Argentine

    Rugby Union presi-

    dent, said the Pumas

    were glad to play

    their part in the

    event.

    We are very proud

to be able to take part

    in a very special day

    like this to honour

    Mandela.

    In 2008 we also

    played in a special

    test to commemorate

    his 90th birthday in

    Johannesburg and it

    will be a privilege for

    us to honour him in

    this way in the next

    game between the Pu-

    mas and our South

    African brothers.

    In a joint statement

    from Lindsay Mould

    and Harold Verster,

    president and CEO of

    the Toyota Cheetahs

    respectively, the duo

    expressed their sup-

    port for the initiative.

    Free State Rugby

    supports the initia-

    tive to move the

    Springbok test to the

    FNB Stadium and see

this as a matter of na-

    tional interest and

    has agreed to do this

    in honour of Former

    President Mandela.

    Free State Rugby

    regrets that the move

    will negatively affect

    their supporters, sea-

    son ticket holders,

    suite holders and oth-

    er interest groups,

    but we trust that eve-

    ryone will have an

    understanding that

    this is done in nation-

    al interest and to hon-

    our Mandela in this

    special way.

    Tickets for the day

    are priced from R220

    and are available

    throughComputicket

    outlets nationwide.
