Welcome toUniversité Le Havre Normandie !

It is most likely that you had neverheard about the city of Le Havrebefore. Today, however, you are goingto unpack your suitcases and settledown for a semester, a year or evenmore, who knows…I hope you are ready to discover theFrench culture and lifestyle, far fromclichés and stereotypes. You will seethat we do not often eat snails, carrybaguettes under our arms or wearberets.You will very soon meet the otherinternational students of theuniversity. As you will all be livingsimilar experiences, you will have a lotto share. To help you know each otherbetter, we will organise events andactivities. You will also have to takesome time to visit the city and theuniversity so that you feel good, bothin your academic and personal life, andof course to do so we will help you!Le Havre is a port city located in theNorth-West of France. It was the 500th

anniversary of the city in 2017. It isclassified as belonging to the world’sheritage due to its architecture and itsport is the second biggest in France forthe amount of trade exchange.However, all students who have spenta semester in Le Havre will tell you thatit is much more than that. Le Havre is acity which deserves to be discovered, avery multicultural city with advantagesnot always visible at first sight. So youwill have to explore, wander, enjoy…

With 8000 students on three sites, ouruniversity is of a medium size. We also like tosay it is of human size as is a small towncompared to a big city. Here, it is easy to findyour way, get to know other students,professors or administration workers of thedifferent departments.

Our university offers a wide range of studyprograms, that can be divided around four mainareas:Arts, Literature, LanguagesLaw, Economics, ManagementSocial Sciences and HumanitiesSciences, Technology, Health

Every faculty and institute has internationalstudent coordinators who will be here to helpyou in every field of study. They will guide youand will assist you in the selection and follow upof your courses.We also have different departments that will bepleased to receive you, such as the sportsdepartment, the cultural department and manyothers. Indeed, the International Office and itsteam, Karine, Martine, Nathalie, Sandrine,Aliona and Elisabeth are already waiting foryou. They will be here throughout your stay toguide you and to help you settle in Le Havre,organise your studies and facilitate youreveryday life.

Check List

Before your arrival :

q Read the accommodation check list and make sure you follow all the instructions (p. 33)

q Inform the International Office (SRI) about your day and time of arrival at Le Havre train station via

email ([email protected]) at least three days in advance.

q Inform your student tutor if there are any changes and contact him/her as soon as you arrive in

France.

q If you do not have an international bank card, take enough cash with you in order to cover your first

expenses. (The opening of a bank account can take from one to two weeks)

q Prepare the following original documents, you will need them. Don’t forget to make copies and

keep them separately.

- for all international students:

q Valid ID card and/or passport

q 5 passport photographs

q Your learning agreement : it must be signed by your home University. Your transcript of records will be prepared on the

basis of this contract.

- For UE studentsq European insurance card valid for the whole duration of the stay

- For non-UE students:

q Visa and “OFII” document given to you with your visa (if necessary)

q Birth certificate translated into French

- For students not registered in their home university

q Copy of your last completed degree.

At your arrival in Le Havre (with the help of a student tutor)

q Go to the International Office the day of your arrival or on the next day in order to enroll to Université Le Havre

Normandie. Warning : Due to reinforced security measures, it is not allowed to bring any luggage to the university.

Before leaving Le Havre

q Make sure all the details on your learning agreement are correct.

q Make an appointment with the SRI two weeks before leaving Le Havre to check your learning agreement before

establishing the transcript of records. If you took any specific exam (oral, redaction or a dissertation), it is essential to

mention it to us.

q Close your bank account, cancel all your contracts ( mobile phone…)

q Follow all instructions on the accommodation check list

The city of Le HavreThe city of Le Havre is organised around thecoastline that borders it. This location led thecity to become a dynamic economic centrewith many port and industrial activities. Thetradition of hospitality of its people, pleasantliving conditions and a diverse offer ofcultural and physical activities make it anattractive place to live.

As a seaside resort bordered with a beautifulpebble beach, Le Havre has a promenade onits seafront which is a friendly place wherethe people of Le Havre love to meet for arun, to do rollerblade, to ride a bike, to strollor to sit down at the terrace of a café facingthe sea. The city centre – rebuilt by AugustePerret after the Second World War bombings– has been listed as a UNESCO world heritagesite in July 2005. It brings together publicgardens, stores and old districts, everythingbuilt with a unique architectural style.

As a sport city, Le Havre offers numeroussports facilities which make its football,basketball and handball teams to play atnational level. There are a lot of water sportsactivities such as rowing, sailing, windsurfing,diving and more.

Le Havre is also a cultural city. There is a wildrange of cultural activities and theprogramme is bold. A lot of cultural outingsare proposed by theatres, concert venue,and art and history museums.

Le Havre is located at the heart of Normandy.You should not hesitate to move away fromthe city to discover this green regionsurrounded by impressive limestone cliffs, tohave a walk, to visit its castles and abbeys…

ClimateClimate in the Normandy region is quiteunpredictable due to its location near thesea-side. Temperatures can change rapidlyfrom one day to another. Days without windare rare. Winters are usually mild (5 – 10°Cfrom November to January, snowfalls beingrare), summers are pleasant (20 – 25°C). Theaverage temperature in September is about15°C. You will need to bring warm clothes forthe winter seasons (coat, hat, scarf).

Le Havre 2017 – 500 years of historyOn October 8th, 1517, king Francis I of Francesigned the founding charter for the port ofLe Havre, a city which was to become moreand more important during the upcomingcenturies. In 2017, the city celebrated its500th anniversary and offered exceptionalexperiences during the summertime of2017. To mention only two events that tookplace in the summer 2017, works of art wereinstalled across the city, 500 passengersembarked from Le Havre for a legendary andnonstop crossing to New York.

Directions to Le Havre

If you arrive by plane, your best option is tochoose one of the Parisian airports: RoissyCharles De Gaulle or Orly.You can also choose to arrive at Beauvais (low-cost flights airport).

By train from Paris airports:

From the airport you need to get to the railwaystation Paris – St Lazare and take a train to LeHavre (terminus of the train, travel time 2h,prices between 15 – 30 €).

From Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport:Take a Roissy Bus to Opéra station.Then , walk to St Lazare station (5 to 10 min).OrTake the RER B, direction “Denfert Rochereau”and get off at “Châtelet les Halles”.Take metro line 14 to Gare St Lazare.Travel time: about 1 hour – Price: about 12 €

Every level of the degree is obtained by acquiring a certain number of ECTS credits (EuropeanCredit Transfer System): 180 ECTS for the Licence grade (6 semesters of studies), 120 ECTS forthe Master grade (4 semesters of studies), 180 ECTS and the redaction of a thesis for theDoctorate grade (6 semesters of studies). This corresponds to 60 ECTS per year and 30 persemester.

The number of ECTS credits of each subject corresponds to the amount of work the studentmust provide.

• Universities offer traditional higher education study courses (Licence, Master, Doctorate) andtechnical education (Diplôme Universitaire de Technologie (DUT)). DUTs are two-years studycourses offered by the University Institutes of Technology (IUT)

• “Grandes Ecoles” and other specialised higher education schools

Exam periodsIn general, an exam period is held at the end of each semester. Re-sits may be organised in order to retake failed exams. Dates and time as well as all examination procedures are determined by each department.

Université Le Havre Normandie organises its studycourses in accordance with the L M D system: Licence –Master – Doctorate, as laid out in the BolognaDeclaration.

At the University faculties (UFR)

The first/undergraduate (Licence) degree correspondsto 180 ECTS credits for a study period of 6 semester.The second/graduate degree (Master) corresponds to120 ECTS credits for a study period of 4 semester.The third/postgraduate degree (Doctorate)corresponds to 180 ECTS credits and the elaboration ofa thesis (6 semester).

The Higher Institute of Logistic Studies is anengineering school offering a specialised degree inlogistics. The 5-year study program is divided into twophases: a 2-year preparatory phase followed by a 3-year specialization in engineering.

How to get to the university

Leaving the main train station, turn right(principal entrance) and follow “Cours de laRépublique” along the tramway for 500 m.Then turn right to “rue Philippe Lebon”.Université Le Havre Normandie is locatedon your left-hand side. Université Le Havre Normandie and the international

An international approach to teaching and Research is apriority for Université Le Havre Normandie. Ourinternationalisation strategy is focused on students’exchanges and foreign language teaching.

In 2008, Université Le Havre Nomandie received theEuropean language label, awarded by the EuropeanCommission.

As part of its innovative, interdisciplinary and vocationalstudy courses, Université Le Havre Normandie encouragesthe learning of one or two foreign languages among twelvelanguages available: Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese,Malay Indonesian, Russian, Portuguese, Italian, German,Spanish and English. All of these languages – exceptGerman, Spanish and English – are taught from beginner toadvanced level and are open to both local and foreignstudents.

In cooperation with academic members (teachers andresearchers), the International Office has establishedinternational agreements with European and non-Europeanuniversities, aiming to promote staff and student mobility.Participating in one of the European or internationalexchange programmes allows our students to acquire aninternational experience and thus enrich their universityeducation. Every year, the university welcomes about 120international students within the framework of ourinternational agreements. Likewise, around 270 students ofUniversité Le Havre Normandie go abroad each year in ourpartner universities. About 80 students do work placementsin a company abroad.

Université Le Havre Normandie welcomes youInternational student tutors

The International Office has established apersonalised student tutor system for each ofthe international students. Each year,“international students tutor” are recruited tohelp students to prepare their stay and toorganise their arrival in Le Havre and at theuniversity. The tutors are French students orforeign students who have themselves beenabroad for a study period.

The SRI will give you the name and contactdetails of your personal tutor in July. You cancontact your tutor via email or social mediaduring the summer if you need help organisingyour arrival in Le Havre or have any questions.

The “student tutor” is there to help you beforeyour stay and to help you organise your daily lifeonce you arrive. His/her work is complementaryto the one of the SRI team in charge of yourwelcoming. His/her principal missions are:

v To pick you at Le Havre train stationv To take you to your accommodation.v To help you with all the administrative

procedures (enrolment in university,insurance, bank account, visa…).

v To help you manage your timetable (rooms,amphitheatre, noticeboard, etc.).

v To present the different university services toyou (university restaurant, sports service,cultural service, university library, etc.).

Please note:

v The International Office can only receive international students from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm during September. Starting from October you will have to respect the office hours on display.

v The student residence hall (CROUS) only accepts arrival from Monday to Friday before 4pm. If you are planning to arrive in Le Havre after 4pm, please inform the International Office a few days in advance, so that your student tutor can pick the keys of your university residence room for you.

The orientation programme

At the beginning of each semester(September and January) anintensive course in French as aforeign language (FLE) is offered toall international students to helpthem settle in. This course consistsof French language classes, as wellof activities organised by theteachers of FLE and the SRI team(welcome cocktails, guided tour ofthe city of Le Havre, excursions inthe region of Normandy, etc.).

We strongly recommend you toattend this French course, which isfree of charge. For the fall semesterof 2020 the course will start onTuesday September 1st. The exactdates and timetable will beavailable at the International Officeupon arrival.

Duration of the program

- September (S1) from 50 to 60hours- January (S2) from 20 to 30 hours(to be confirmed)

French course

The French course is proposed toexchange students all throughoutthe university year in each Facultyand Institute. There are threelevels: beginner, intermediate andadvanced (French superiorlanguage). Upon successful examsthere will be 5 ECTS creditsvalidated per semester.

The timetable and the courseprogramme are available at the SRIor at the FLE secretary’s office.

Activities

Throughout the year, the SRIorganises different events forinternational students: Salsa,bowling, festive meetings, etc.)..This year the SRI is going towelcome a German volunteer whowill contribute to the activitiesorganisation.

- Students taking à la carte coursesYou have to do your course registration atthe beginning of the semester after yourfinal selection of courses. This processconcerns the TD (tutorial classes)registration – if needed – and examregistration.

As you have courses from different diplomas,your courses could be attached to differentsecretary’s offices. You have to know whichof each of your courses are attached towhich diploma, and introduce yourself toeach secretary’s offices. Make sure to knowthe name of each of your professors as well.

Université Le Havre Normandie uses an onlinetool for timetable management(Hyperplanning), which is integrated in thedigital working environment (ENT) and allstudents have access to it.

Choose your courses

Exchange students may choose theircourses as follows:1) à la carte (Erasmus+, ISEP, bilateralagreements)2) within a double diploma programme

Most exchange students will, however,choose their courses à la carte (fromdifferent programmes and years) andwill have to fill out a learningagreement (contrat d’études). Thisdocument is very important and has tobe validated and signed by both thestudent coordinator at your homeUniversity and at Université Le HavreNormandie and also by you.

Fill out your learning agreement(contrat d’études)

The learning agreement must be filledin and signed before you leave yourcountry. It can be modified at thebeginning of the semester in case thereis a problem with the timetable forexample.

For the students coming within theErasmus+ framework, changes have tobe small. The students’ contract musthave 30 ECTS credits per semester.

- Choose your courses according to yourcurriculum at your home university.Your can choose courses from differentlevels (L1, L2, L3 or Master courses) andgo to several classes before you makeyour final choice.

- List the courses you have chosen. Foreach course, please specify the exacttitle and the number of ECTS credits.

- If you come from a non-EU country, your homeUniversity may have different requirements. The finalchoice of your courses and the amount of ECTS creditsmust be validated by the student coordinator of yourhome University.

- Have your learning agreement validated and signed.Warning: any modifications must be validated by bothof your student coordinators.

There are two different assessment typesat Université Le Havre Normandie

v Continuous assessment: shorterwritten or oral tests that take place allyear long

v Final assessment: written or oralexams at the end of each semester

The student restaurants of Université Le HavreNormandie are managed by the CROUS andoffer two types of meals:A full lunch including first course, main courseand dessert (from 3,50 € for the dish of the day)in the restaurants (RU) or smaller snacks andfast food in the cafeterias.

Accommodation

As far as possible, the International Office pre-books a room in a student’s residence hall forall exchange students. Due to the largenumber of requests, you will receive onesingle offer. If you accept the offeredaccommodation, you will have to contact therespective housing association yourself andfollow all further instructions in order to makeyour reservation. We strongly encourage youto make your reservation once you havereceived the acceptance letter issued by theInternational Office.

Rent an apartment in France: what you needto know

There are different types of studentaccommodation available. The rent is payableper month and ranges from 200 to 450 €.Water and electricity are not always included.Most apartments have electric heatingsystems.

Before handing over the keys, the landlord orhousing association will ask you several things:payment of a security deposit (before yourarrival), filling out an inventory report, (étatdes lieux), signing a tenancy agreement orlease, taking out housing insurance. Read theagreement carefully before you sign it.

Before leaving your accommodation, youmust give a written notice to your landlord orhousing association to inform them about yourdeparture, at least one month in advance, andmake an appointment to fill out the inventoryreport.

Financial aid

If you stay at the same apartment formore than three months, you can applyfor the French housing assistanceAllocation de logement à caractère social(A.L.S.), or Aide personnalisée au logement(A.P.L.). The amount of money you will beallocated depends on your rent, the typeof accommodation and your personalresources.

Non-EU students need to have theirresidence permit before they can apply forhousing benefit. The aid (A.L.S. and A.P.L.)will be paid only for the months after theresidence permit has been issued. Thesesteps will take some time. Therefore,students who stay for a period of less than6 months and need a residence permitmight not be able to get housing benefit.

Make sure youhave understood all renting conditions(security deposit (dépôt de garantie or cautionin French), water and electricity bills, Wi-Fi,departure notice, etc.).

Attention: If you are looking for a flat on yourown, watch out for fraudulent offers! Do notmake any payment before you have seen theflat. We recommend you that you book aroom in a hotel or youth hostel for the firstweek and look for accommodation on-site inorder to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

Check list for CROUS housing

All students have to make the reservation for their room before arriving in Le Havre. All

deadline given by the respective housing association must be respected. All exchange students

must arrive between September 1st and 30th and will have to pay the full rent for the month of

September.

Before your arrival

q Return the documents the International Office has sent you to the CROUS via email (resid-

[email protected]).

q Pay the security deposit by bank transfer. The exact amount is indicated on the

documents you have received.

When you arrive at your accommodation

q Take an housing insurance and civil liability from the first week (assurance logement/

responsabilité civile).

q Fill out your inventory report (état des lieux) or check if it has been done by your student

tutor.

q Read and sign your tenancy agreement (contrat de location).

During your stay

q Take good care of your flat in order to be able to leave it in the same conditions it was in

at your arrival (clean and take out the garbage regularly, etc.).

q Be careful not to lose your keys. Any intervention by the CROUS because of lost keys will

be billed.

Before leaving your accommodation

q Give notice of your departure to the CROUS one month in advance – warning : every

started month will be due in total.

The University Library

Université Le Havre Normandie has two libraries; one atLebon site (main site in the city centre), the other atCaucriauville site (IUT), in the upper town of the city. Thesetwo libraries are an important asset for all students and willcontribute to a successful study period in Le Havre. Once youare enrolled at the University, you will have access to allservices offered at our libraries: borrow documents (books,magazines, DVDs, etc.), consult digital documents(magazines, books, data bases), use the internet (networkedPCs or Wi-Fi connection), borrow laptops, participate inliterature search workshops, etc.

The Cultural Service

A new country, that’s also a new culture! A culture you willbe able to discover thanks to the numerous events organizedby the cultural service of Université Le Havre Normandie.

The cultural service has 3 main objectives:

v Enable you to take part in local and regional cultural life byoffering student discounts (cinemas, theaters, concerts,festivals, etc.).

v Enable you to get involved in artistic activities at studentprices by participating in one of our many artistic andcultural workshops: dance, theater, photography, gospel,circus, etc.

v Enable you to become an ambassador of your homecountry by supporting your cultural projects: exhibitions,concerts, thematic evenings, etc.

The cultural service offers you:

v A performance hall (115 seats) where life performances,conferences and movie screenings take place

v An exhibition hallv An equipped rehearsal studio for musician students;v Two photo laboratories : silver halide photography

The Cultural Service furthermore organizes an on-campusprogram, offering you free* concerts, theater performances,exhibitions…(Usually every Tuesday)* Except performances by the University theater group andsome other events (student prices).

Sports

Sport and physical exercise are very important for ouruniversity community. All sports activities are managed bythe Service Universitaire des Activités Physiques et Sportives(S.U.A.P.S.), which offers:

v Around 40 amateur sports activitiesv The possibility to take part in University competitions

organized by the University Sports Association A.S.U.Hv Special events or tournaments on Wednesday or Thursday

evenings (free of charge and open for everyone!). Checkthe SUAPS’s notice boards to see what is on offer.

v Sports activities as optional teaching units (UL)v Adapted sports activities for disabled students (in

collaboration with the Student Disability Service)v Support of professional athletes

Each year, the sports activities start at the end of September.If you want to take part in an activity, you need to register atthe S.U.A.P.S. from the beginning of September. Prices rankbetween 20 € (badminton, team sports,…) and 80 € (sailing,diving,…) per year. Please not that the number of participantsper activity is limited.

For your registration, you need to have the following documents:

Your student card, a cheque to the university accountant oryour bank card. A health certificate will be completed on-site(a medical certificate is needed to do boxing, scuba diving,rugby and sports competitions.).

SUIO (Professional orientation and integration)

The orientation, information and integration service of theUniversity, “SUIO” is in charge of all activities regardingprofessional orientation, work placements and theprofessional integration of students and graduates.

The SUIO has an orientation and information office (BIO) aswell as a student’s professional integration office (BIPE).

The BIO informs you about study programmes in Le Havreand France, entrance tests for public service positions,different job opportunities, the labor market, etc. The staffhelp you to find the option that best suits your personalcareer plan.

The BIPE helps students plan their professional future,familiarises them with different techniques to findinternships or employment and brings them closer to thebusiness world. There are books and magazines on differenttopics such as CV and cover letter writing, job interviewpreparations and the use of social media in job searches andyou are welcome to use them.

Both offices have several computer work places and offer awide range of specialist magazines about professionalorientation, the labor market, economic issues, etc.

The SUIO also organises conferences for different targetaudiences (high school or university students, teachers, etc.)on a regular basis. We invite you to make an appointment inorder to meet one of our student counsellors to talk aboutany questions regarding professional orientation orintegration.
