your juniors are your enemies as well. If you cannot defeat your superiors, you cannot advance. You cannot possess even

one friend.”

“To be truly victorious, one must be convincing. There will be no real victory if one cannot convince one’s opponent. In this sense, I

want all of you to study harder.”


TO CULTIVATE CAPABLE PEOPLE

“I want to cultivate capable people who, on a smaller scale will protect the safety of their families and be of benefit to local society,

and who, on a larger scale, will serve their nation and their people.”


DRAW FORTH SENSE OF JUSTICE

“First, draw forth a sense of justice. Then, instil solid conviction, and move in a positive direction. I knew this was the way that it

must be done. This is the main reason I adopted this type of pursuit upon opening my school.”


THE INITIAL GOALS

everyone works together things will somehow work out. With these as the initial goals, the flourishing Shorinji Kempo of today

was created.”


TO DEVELOP LEADERS

“From the beginning, I wanted to develop leaders. Those who wish to become stronger in street fights, want to show off, or who are

concerned only with their own interests are NOT WANTED HERE.”


WALK ON THEIR OWN LEGS

“Like the excrement of a goldfish, those who only string along behind, and are not interested in learning how to walk on their own

legs ARE NOT NEEDED HERE.”

“Behind the establishment of Shorinji Kempo was desire to educate people through a type of philosophical movement, a religious

movement, a moral movement.”

people things that money cannot buy, things more precious than awards, teaching them that the final source of strength must

be personal pride and confidence.”


MORE THAN JUST TECHNIQUE

“ShorinjiKempo is more than just technique. Technique alone is fine for karate or other martial arts. It is adequate if the only

objective is to fight. Although ShorinjiKempo was originally based on technique, just because one’s technique is good is no

basis for praise.”

“The essence of ShorinjiKempo is not merely a martial art or sport. We are not interested in developing athletes. We want to build

strong human beings, who will function effectively in society or wherever they go. This has been the basic aim of

ShorinjiKempo from its beginnings.”

“Educate your juniors, respect your superiors, acknowledge your own existence. This is shugyo. Any school which does not attempt

to even do this does not deserve a ShorinjiKempo club.”


LIMITATIONS OF MARTIAL ARTS

“No matter how fast one swims 100 meters, a dolphin can swim it faster. There is no relation between being able to swim fast and

being able to survive in the middle of stormy ocean, and save all your fellow passengers should the boat capsize.”


HIGHEST TECHNICAL LEVEL

“As an unarmed fighting art, I believe the technical level of Shorinji Kempo is the highest in the world. I can tell you this with great

confidence.”


DISCIPLINE OF ZEN

“ShorinjiKempo is one discipline of Zen, and it can be said that efforts to strengthen the body should be performed together with

zazen.”


WHY SHORINJIKEMPO?

“Why do people come to ShorinjiKempo? The answer is because the things learned at ShorinjiKempo can be used in society, and

are useful wherever you go.”


TRUE PRACTICE

“To truly practice ShorinjiKempo, go and teach people at the dojo and pursue the techniques in earnest. And remember, a single

technique will require at least two or three years to master.


TO MOVE PEOPLE

“Technique must be mastered. However, the ability to move people is a separate, more powerful strength. Excellent technique is

not enough to move people.”

WORLDWIDE DEVELOPMENT


Being good is not enough. You must have

the intensity to back it up. Just being good

will be of no help in times of crisis. Just

“seeing good” means apathy, and we do

not need such people. You must become

a person who can be depended upon in

any situation.

Be a person to be depended on first by

others in times of crises. Do not allow

yourself to be threatened or intimidated.

Tell yourself that you will not lose. That is

the goal of our organization.

You are all leaders. You

are future teachers. Do not

degenerate to the position

of mere skilled workers.

Our young members tend to

place more emphasis on

techniques. I certainly state

again, technique is not

everything.?

So what if your technique is skilful? You can do kempo, but nothing else. Of what use is this?
