!" years since the expansion of Shorinji Kempo to the UK arebeing celebrated and it gives me the greatest pleasure thatthis anniversary celebration is taking place+

!" years ago when Sensei Tameo Mizuno first introducedShorinji Kempo in the United Kingdom, I think that amongstthe differences in language, culture and customs there weremany, harder to imagine difficulties+ As well as having a sin-cere respect for Sensei's efforts and achievements, I amdeeply grateful for the cooperation of all staff and branchheads+

Shorinji Kempo was founded in #(*& with the aim, accordingto its founding teacher, Doshin So, of producing people whoare useful in society, based on the idea of "self establish-ment" and "being at ease with one another"+ Over )& years, with the assistance of the many who endorse its activities,Shorinji Kempo has expanded to currently !# countriesworldwide+ WSKO history apart, it gives me great pleasurethat each of the nations' federation and branches have accu-mulated their own history and in each place anniversary cel-ebrations or similar will be held+ Shorinji Kempo has unitedinto one world-wide organisation+

In order not to change the essence of Shorinji Kempo whichis founded on the combination of a system of teaching, tech-niques and education, the point of origin (The Founder'sintention) must not be forgotten+

Since the time when the Founder originated Shorinji Kempo !" years prior to the British Federation coming into being -and today, against the background of the period, society haschanged+ However, the aim of developing people who arewell versed in Shorinji Kempo and can contribute to society,is one which crosses country borders and those of space andtime+

We appear to be moving from the wars of the $"th centu-ry to the harmony of the $#st, but as ever humans are unableto rid themselves from the foolishness of trying to be supe-rior according to their degree of strength+ The $#st centuryis a period where more than ever the quality of a person andway life is questioned+ Let us walk together, taking pride inan organisation which cultivates those capable people need-ed by society+

Taking these !" years as an opportunity, moreover with thework that each and every member has put into the improve-ment and harmony of society, I anticipate that from thispoint onwards, an even more wonderful history will be accu-mulated+

Lastly, I would like to honour all of you ladies and gentle-men who have given your assistance and all of those whohave given your support to the British Shorinji KempoFederation+ I offer my hearfelt congratulations and hopesincerely for your continued assistance+

Message to the !"th anniversary of the British Shorinji Kempo Federation

First of all, as Director General of the Japan Foundation,London, I should like to convey my best wishes and congrat-ulations to all participants gathered here today to celebratethe !"th anniversary of the British Shorinji KempoFederation+ In particular, I should also like to express mydeepest respects to Ms+ Yuki Soh, Secretary-General of theWorld Shorinji Kempo Organisation for her energetic dedi-cation to the spread of Shorinji Kempo across the globe+

The Japan Foundation is Japan's principal institution for cul-tural exchange between Japan and overseas countries+ Wehave #( offices throughout the world including our office inLondon+ We have been active in London for the past !"years and have promoted to other countries a wide range ofactivities designed to introduce Japanese culture that spansthe traditional and the modern+ Through our work, I alwayskeep in mind the fact that sport is very obviously an effec-tive vehicle and a most influential way of penetrating andstimulating the minds of different nationalities+

In this respect, I have been proud to introduce overseas theJapanese traditional martial arts, Shorinji Kempo, whichconsistently preaches self-establishment and co-happi-ness between people, in order to foster a mutual under-standing beyond the confines of individual nations+ It is noexaggeration to say that most of the Kenshies dispatchedby the Japan Foundation are highly regarded and praised interms of the quality of the individual and their technique+

From autum #((" until summer #((# I was at WarwickUniversity doing research+ I had only just become a shodanin Japan+ Wanting to continue Shorinji Kempo, for the peri-od of one year I was looked after at Mizuno Sensei's dojo inBrixton+

I trained at Mizuno Sensei's dojo and there were two thingswhich differed from Shorinji Kempo in Japan+ The first wasthe cosmopolitanism+ At Doin in Japan there are mostlyJapanese people, but Mizuno Sensei's dojo was very interna-tional+ I became aware that this then, is the essentialShorinji Kempo+ The second thing was the concentration onspiritual aspects of Shorinji Kempo+ In Japan there are manywho tend to be interested only in learning techniques+ Aconsiderable number of Mizuno Sensei's pupils seek thespiritual and religious aspects+ There are many who treadthe true path of Kempo+

Other memories are also international+ Amongst these, thetraining seminar in Cyprus and the visit to Portugal (in con-nection with an instruction visit by Mizuno Sensei) areunforgetttable++ Attending a training seminar abroad, this is something you cannot expe-rience in Japan+

I offer my best wishes for the increasing growth of theBritish Shorinji Kempo Federation and the activities ofMizuno Sensei+

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to offer you myheartfelt congratulations on the !"th anniversary of theBritish Shorinji Kempo Federation+

In #(&(, I completed my studies in Afghanistan, where amajor conflict was imminent, and moved to Britain to fur-ther my studies+ I then joined Mizuno Sensei, who wasinvolved in the initial stages of establishing the BritishShorinji Kempo Federation+ Under his instruction and sup-port, I opened a Shorinji Kempo club at Oxford University, which I believe contributed to the increased popularity ofshorinji kempo among British people+ It was a hugely bene-ficial experience and it has given me great personal satisfac-tion in later life to promote a variety of cultural exchangesin this country+ It makes me happy and proud that theBritish Shorinji Kempo Federation now has !" years of his-tory behind it in its activities+ Given the undoubted recipro-cal bond created by this martial art, I feel it is fitting to holdan embu competition as an event at the forthcoming JapanCulture Month in Uzbekistan, with the help of MizunoSensei and several other Federation officers+

Sadly I am not involved in Shorinji Kempo at presentbecause of my current work-commitments+ However, it ismy sincerest wish that the British Shorinji KempoFederation continues to have a prosperous and successfulfuture+

The irony behind tamashii is it is usually manifested in a more casual form+ It is not seen as people struggling to their feet despite obvious exhaustion+ This is usually people for the short term+ The true tamashii are the ones that accept it as part of their daily routine, without complaint or surprise+ Keep it real+

Tamashii

When I started my Shorinji Kempo career $" years ago I thought little of the word tamashii, only that I should try my hardest+ I wanted to be faster, stronger and louder than anyone else in the class+ My relationship with Joe Collis, my lifelong embu partner, was always an ecliptic mix of competition and respect+ Memories of embu practise in his back garden, barefoot in the snow, will always be treasured+ Even now, our insane fascination with each others pain is delicately balanced with the laughter which follows+ The only viable explanation I can offer is that of tamashii+

The Japanese word tamashii can be translated as soul or spirit and loosely used to mean fighting spirit in the martial arts world+ It has nothing to do with training hard, loud kiai or being good at fighting+ It has more to do with putting everything into what you are doing mentally, physically and psychologically+ When punching in kihon, it is more than trying to perform well+ It is punching as though your life depends upon it+ Each punch is your maximum effort+ Your mind set should be that one, that one, that one+ Each attack being the one that saves your life against a threatening assailant+ Each one better than the one before+ All of them inadequate with room for improvement+ If you do not adopt this attitude then you are simply going through the motions, regardless how good you look and loud you sound+

Tamashii is to put your best spirit into your thoughts and actions+ Not once, but continually+ Not when you are at your best, but when you are at your lowest+ It has nothing to do with ego and the person next to you+ It is about you and your personal battle to develop and improve+ Leaving your comfort zone and pushing it to the maximum+

What were youre immediate aims when youarrived in Japan?

The first thing I thought was how can I teach, becausethe biggest problem was with the language barrier+Some time later I realised the most difficult thing wasto teach the philosophy of Shorinji Kempo to kenshi+ Icould make normal conversation but philosophy wasa quite an important thing for me+ If Shorinji Kempothrows away the philosophy then it is no longerShorinji Kempo+ My first aim (and headache, theywere same thing) was how to teach the philosophyand how to teach the original way of Shorinji Kempothat the founder established in Japan+ But obviouslythe first * or ) years was a very difficult period for myinstruction+

As well as language, what other difficulties werethere at the beginning?

Other than language I didnt have any particular diffi-culties+ I didnt realise so many things would have tochange in my life+ I needed to study everything, so Iwas never felt any boredom or difficulty+

Can you tell us about the first dojo you started inLondon?

When I arrived in #(&* I was introduced to the BritishKarate Control Commissioner+ He gave me names andaddresses of contacts for % universities and colleges inthe UK+ I chose City University; at that time it was ThePolytechnic of Central London+ That was my firstdojo+ I started in the beginning of November and itwas hugely successful in terms of the number of stu-dents I could not hold all of my students+ But obvi-ously my communication was limited and if I lookback, in a way it was poor instruction, especially myphilosophy, which was almost nothing+ My first reali-sation was how difficult it was to teach ShorinjiKempo+

The first private dojo was on Finchley road where Ihired a church hall+ It was quite strange hanging aManji, a Buddhist symbol, in a Christian hall, but theydidnt complain about it+ I explained it was not a

Sensei could you tell us how you came to teachShorinji Kempo in the UK?

Around #(%' or #(%( I was a student and at that timeI was very interested in going abroad+ Also ShorinjiKempo was a quite big deal for me and gave me a bigchange in my life, as well as confidence+ I was begin-ning to think that sometime in my life I would like togo abroad and teach SK outside of Japan+ That wasmy first occasion I felt I wanted to teach abroad+

Why did you want to travel abroad to teachShorinji Kempo and not stay in Japan?

Because I was quite young and at the same time I hadconfidence, I wanted to challenge mycapabilities and what I could do,especially outside of Japan+ If Iwas in Japan perhaps I couldhave relied on other people+But if I went abroad, I couldnot+ Thats why I wanted to findout about my capacity and howmuch I can do outside Japan+ So,the other most interesting thingis if I taught in Japan theyhave many branches and Id haveto follow the track of ShorinjiKempo there+ But if I went toabroad it would be a brandnew area and I could tryand teach my beliefs andmy aims, which would bemy decisions, so that even if I failed Icould take my responsibility+ So thatswhy I was interested in teachingabroad+

When did you first decide on the UK?

Japan and the UK had a special relationship+ EarlyJapan, after the Edo period was over, opened theirports to the world and there was a big influence fromEurope+

And Britain was one of the key countries thatbrought European culture and a new way of life+Thats why Japan has studied England for a long time+

So thats why one of my images was thatperhaps Japan and Britain are similar

islands and the mentality of theBritish was similar to the Japanese+ Icould see American people, but insome way theirs was quite a different

lifestyle and attitude+ I thought thatBritain was more similar to Japan, so I

chose Britain+

In the %"s why was itimportant toteach ShorinjiKempo in other

countries?

In the %"s ShorinjiKempo was ayoung martial artsorganisation, itwasnt as big as itis now+ So thatswhy I was verykeen to spilt this

movement out-side Japan+ But I was

amazed how the founder SoDoshin established a newway of martial arts that wasso successful+ My aims forShorinji Kempo was to see

how much of his philosophy and techniques could beachieved and impress people outside of Japan+ Thatwas interesting to me because, if the philosophy wasuniversally accepted then it is the truth+ But if onlythe Japanese can accept this philosophy then may beit is not much use to study+Since I came to Britain I have travelled to many dif-ferent countries and Shorinji Kempo is everywhere, people are interested in it and it is expanding+

Interview with Sensei Mizuno, #!/#"/"*+

swastika but it was a symbol of Shorinji Kempo and Iexplained the meaning behind it and they gave us thespace for training+ That church was rebuilt because itwas too old so we moved to the London Judo Society, perhaps the biggest Judo hall in London+ I taughtthere from around the end of the &"s to the end of the'"s+ So that was the beginning of my private dojos+

What were youre first impressions of Kenshi inBritain compared with Japan?

The kenshi themselves were the same+ I could see thatwhatever the nationality they are the same+ Thebackground cultures are different but once theyfound their interest and understood the philosophy ofShorinji Kempo, any nationality is the same thing+But the main difference is that generally the Britishare bigger and more powerful than Japanese+ If youcompared the strength of British and Japanese thenmay be the British are stronger+ Of course both haveweak points, but on average they are stronger+ But atthe same time they are very hard, not as flexible+Thats what I noticed+

Uzbekistan Trip $""*

Uzbekistan, one of the former Soviet Republics in Central Asia, gained independence in #((#+ Its capital is Tashkent, but it also boasts the ancient and cultured cities of Bukhara, Khiva and Samarkand, rightfully known as the "Heart of the Silk Road", lying as it does midway between Europe in the West and Japan in the East+ Uzbekistan is fostering relations with many countries, not least of which is Japan, who has invested millions of dollars in development aid+ Within Uzbekistan there is a great deal of interest in Japanese language and culture, and in recent years the Embassy of Japan in Tashkent has sponsored and promoted an annual "Japanese Days of Culture" event+ The organiser of the event is Hiroshi Takahashi, minister of the Japan Embasssy+ His aim has been to bring aspects of Japanese art and culture to audiences in Uzbekistan+In this aim Mr Takahashi has been very successful+ This year he wanted to introduce Japanese Budo to

the Uzbek audience for the first time+

Mr Takahashi is a former Shorinji Kenshi, so he wanted to give Shorinji Kempo the honour of being the first martial art to be publicly demonstrated in Uzbekistan+ Moreover, Mr Takahashi was a member of the British Shorinji Kempo Federation in the early #('"s, a student of Mizuno Sensei+ So it came to be that during its !"th anniversary year, the British Shorinji Kempo Federation was invited to give the first public demonstration of Budo in Uzbekistan+The delegation was headed by Tameo Mizuno Sensei (seihanshi), Chief Instructor of the BSKF+ Also in attendence were Koji Kato (Okazaki Chubu doin, seikenshi), Senichi Mie (Kyoto Kintetsu Bunka SalonCulture, seikenshi) who joined the delegation from Japan+ BSKF members were George Hyde (UCL, chukenshi), Satoshi Tachibana (Mayfair, chukenshi), Damian Mitchell, Xavier Alford, Satoko Iinuma, Yukiko Tasaki, Sami Elkhalifa (all Mayfair, junkenshi), Felix Lee (Mayfair, ikkyu) and myself+ We landed at Tashkent Airport early in the morning of Monday September #!th, where we were met by Mr Takahashi and other members of the Embassy staff+ After passing through diplomatic passport control we were accompanied to our hotel by a police escort+

Interview with Sensei Mizuno, #!/#"/"*+

When you look back at the passed !" years whatabout the BSKF makes you most proud?

Shorinji Kempo development in the UK is quitesteady, not very fast because it is not such a commer-cialised martial art+ So people come to join and theyall have individual backgrounds and aims, so if theirtraining purpose and our training purpose is not thesame they cannot stay+ Shorinji Kempo has a verystrong backbone of philosophy, so if people cannotcope or enjoy the philosophy of Shorinji Kempo theywill not stay+ That is why it is not easy for ShorinjiKempo to change over night and become a hugeorganisation+ But the last !" years growth has beenvery steady and it is definitely expanding+ There aremore branches and more black belts and branch mas-ters+ Thats why I can see that the organisation is verysolid+ It is not easy to break apart, it is very solid andthat makes me very proud and I have confidence inthis federation+

What are your dreams and ambitions for thefuture of the BSKF?

I have said that the development of Shorinji Kempo isnot easy and the number of students is not easy tobuild up+ But the BSKF itself, after Japan andIndonesia, has the third largest number of studentsworldwide+ I am quite proud of the improvement andexpansion in the movement+ I dont want to instantlymake instructors+ Instructors should share my aimsand dreams+ So thats why we cannot produce $"instructors in one year+ So, although it is slow it isvery steady+ So in the next ) #" years we can doublethe number of branches and double the number ofstudents+ That is my aim+ Slowly but steady and abuild a very sure and solid organisation+ That is myaim+

Have you got anything else you would like toadd Sensei?

We have ## or #$ countries in Europe+ They are closeto each other and we frequently travel to them andwe have good relationships+ For example at our !"thanniversary there are kenshi from Europe coming tocelebrate with us, and also British kenshi are going toPortugal+

That is a very nice relationship+ Also many British ken-shi have travelled to Japan, to the Shorinji Kempoheadquarters+ But also the USA, Africa, SouthAmerica, Australia, and Africa, in all these differentplaces there is SK being practiced+ It may be not soeasy to travel to those places, but if you have a chanceto travel to these countries please take youre dogiwith you and join the local dojo and communicate+Perhaps they will never forget your visit, and will bemore proud of Shorinji Kempo+ A very good thingabout Shorinji Kempo is that there is the same train-ing, the same techniques and the same philosophy+ Itsometimes depends on the experience of the instruc-tor, may be some will teach less philosophy but I cantcomplain because I was the same when I first arrivedin Britain+ So, as far as Shorinji Kempo is concernedthe World Shorinji Kempo Organisation is one gov-erning body that produces the same quality ofinstruction+ So if any kenshi go abroad and there is aShorinji Kempo club there, I hope they can join andbuild up good friendships and good comradeship+

On Friday we travelled to Samarkand+ This part of the trip was sponsored by the Uzbekistan ministry of Culture, and organised by Mr Yamamoto, a well respected teacher of Japanese in Samarkand+ We demonstrated again, in front of a thousand people this time, and once again the television cameras recorded+ Mizuno Sensei was presented with a traditional Uzbek robe, and the rest of us with Uzbek caps+ Sensei gave an interview for the local papers, and afterwards we were entertained by Mr Yamamoto and a member of the ministry of culture+ The following day we went to see the mausoleum of Amir Temur, the Observatory of Ulugbek, and the three Medrasse's round Registan Square+ These were simply magnificent+

On a personal note, I think that the trip was highly successful+ I was surprised how many martial artists there were in Tashkent+ They showed great interest in the demonstration and Mizuno Sensei's lecture, and I believe that we gave a good introduction to budo in general and Shorinji Kempo in particular+ We were completely looked after throughout our trip+ The local hospitality by the Embassy staff and the Japanese students is a perfect example of how Shorinji kenshi should strive to be in similar situations+ Mizuno Sensei later explained that we had been complimented on our good attitudes+ I am very grateful for the hospitality which made a very enjoyable trip+ This is not the first time that being a member of the BSKF has given me an opportunity to do something that would not ordinarily do+ I hope it is not the last+ I learned a little of the ancient history of Central Asia, and experienced first hand the local custroms+ Finally, as with all Shorinji Kempo trips and seminars, the prescence of other kenshi made for a great experience, and developing of good friendships+ I urge other kenshi to seriously consider taking any similar opportunities that are presented to you+

Uzbek television crews filmed as Mizuno Sensei narrated the demonstration, explaining the history and philosophy of Shorinji Kempo+ Demonstrations included hono embu, dantai embu, hokei demonstrations by Kato-san and Mie-san, gosshin-jutsu demonstrations (self-defence), randori and was capped with a display of tanto-dori by Mizuno Sensei+ The audience eagerly participated in the final sample kihon+ At the end we were warmly thanked with flowers, photos and autograph requests+

On Wednesday local students of Japanese showed us the Museum of Art and took us for a traditional Uzbek lunch+ In the evening Mizuno Sensei gave a lecture on Budo at the Japan International Co-operation Agency, in the International Business Center+ The lecture was well-attended and included some of Tashkent's martial arts practitioners from Aikido, Judo and Nihon Kempo+ Mizuno Sensei began the lecture with a discussion of ninja; he asked if anyone thought they were a ninja, or if they thought ninja existed in Japan+ He then politely disabused the audience of any notion that ninja arts exist anywhere other than in the movies+ Sensei explained the concept of "bun-bu ryodo", the two ways of literature and martial arts, which have traditionally been followed side by side+ Sensei finished by explaining his motivation for studying budo+ After the lecture we dined as guests of the ambassador, a very enjoyable and unique experience+

After a much needed short rest we went to look at the venue for the next day's demonstration: The Uzbekistan Tennis Centre+ It is an impressive building, which often hosts the Asian Tennis Games and holds an audience of !"""+ From here we went to the Embassy, where we were very priviledged to take tea with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Uzbekistan Yuichi Kusumoto+ The Ambassador had only just arrived in Uzbekistan and we were his first official guests+ He had spent time in London in the early #(&"s, and spoke perfect English+

We were joined for the duration of our stay by Keiichi Sato (seikenshi), who used to live in Manchester, but is now Director of the Earth Link Japan Uzbekistan Office, based in Nukus+ He made the long journey to Tashkent to look after us during our free time+ He took us to local restaurants and attractions that we would not otherwise have found+ We were very grateful for his hard work in helping us+ Without him the trip would have been very lacking+

On Tuesday evening the Japanese Days of Culture event was opened by the ambassador, who expressed his confidence that the event would serve to strength friendship between Uzbekistan and Japan+

were asked to speak about touching issues that

affect them directly due to conflict/war in their

home countries+ Plenty of issues were clarified in the

sense that children were able to freely exchange

points of view without blaming each other, but they

all reached the agreement that although they all fall

on different sides geographically, they were all

essentially on the same side+

The event also had a great impact on the adults,

most of whom thought they were alone in trying to

achieve world peace via the practice of Budo, and

were overwhelmed by meeting other likeminded

people+

What has this achieved? This event was only a pilot

project; there are plenty of improvements that could

be made+ Nevertheless, it provides hope for the

future+ The fact that children and adults from

countries in conflict, with differing backgrounds,

religions, political beliefs, cultures and opposite ways

of thinking, can come together in harmony through

the practice of Budo, provides hope for us all+

This year, the event was fortunate in receiving

attention form major Budo instructors: Nakajima

Takehido (Judo ' Dan), Bennett Alex (Kendo % Dan),

Hakim Danny (Karate % Dan), Mark Duncan

(Shorinji Kempo * Dan, Aikido * Dan, Judo $ Dan)+

The Budo Festival for Peace committee is looking to

start working on next year's project with the hope of

attracting more participants+

British Shorinji Kempo Federation !"th Anniversary $#

Samer Majed began his Shorinji Kempo career as one

of the original members of UCL dojo in London+

Having achieved #st dan, he went to Japan where he

successfully gained entry to the residential academy

at Shorinji Kempo headquarters+ Following two

years of full time training Sam graduated as a !rd

dan and returned to his homeland of Lebanon to

establish his own Shorinji Kempo branch+

In July this year he was invited to participate in an

event in the Budo for Peace Festival in Greece, an

event which fosters ideals very close to the heart of

all serious Shorinji Kempo practitioners+ This is Sam's

brief account of the event+

/////////////////

The Budo for Peace Festival brings children from

various countries, particularly those in conflict,

together to practice Budo over the course of four

days+ The pilot project was held in Delphi, Greece,

where about )" children and adults participated+ As

part of the organizing committee, it was particularly

fulfilling to watch the students grow in spirit over

the training period+

Everyday, the students got up early for Tai Chi

practice before breakfast+ The morning session

consisted of various Budo training under remarkable

instructors, and the afternoon session consisted of

light exercise and bonding activities+ The Founder of

the organization, Danny Hakim, Karate % Dan,

emphasized the point that in Budo, the opponent is

not called our enemy, but rather our partner+

Through the practice of various Budo, students were

able to break barriers of prejudice and overcome fear

of stereotyped images of the enemy+

The project revolved around two issues: Individual

development in terms of manners and technical

ability, and group development; cooperation and

mental flexibility+ Due to the social conditions in

third world countries, we can imagine the lack of

discipline that many children face+ But abiding by

Budo rituals in the Dojo and gradually taking these

rituals outside the Dojo, the students developed

habits of respecting their teachers, and each other+

Also, the sincerity in practice was somehow taken to

each and every activity leading to their self respect+

One great way of getting students to cooperate is

what we call in Shorinji Kempo Kumi Embu+ In

pairs, students practiced two techniques and were

then asked to practice it as an Embu+ The level of

cooperation was so high that two kids who had

fought on the first night were able to perform an

Embu on the third day+ This cooperation is visible in

all Budo thanks to the connection made via physical

contact whilst the safe environment created enables

children to overcome their fears+ In the event, this

feeling of security grew due to the bonds built via

Budo practice, and was therefore present even

outside the Dojo+

Seeing various Sensei explaining and demonstrating the same techniques that I had learned in London was very informative and enjoyable+ I felt that I had only scratched the surface of understanding; and how much more there was to learn, even in the simplest of movements+ I was very glad to be there!

After the days training, Mizuno Sensei invited us to join him at what had been one of Kaisos favorite restaurants+ Its speciality was very spicy fried chicken+ A large amount of cold beer was consumed by kenshi that evening!

After our first full day of training, we gradually began to appreciate the opportunity for learning+ Over the next three days, we had the privilege of receiving instruction from many of Hombus most senior Senseis+ Moreover, as special treat, we spent one afternoon visiting and training in Kaisos first dojo in Tadotsu+ It was very interesting to see and everyone in our group was very impressed at the modest beginnings of Shorinji Kempo+ We also toured the museum and walked around the cherry blossom trees behind Hombu+

On the last day of Spring Camp, we were treated to a demonstration by the Hombu Demonstration Team+ Everyone present was very impressed and resolved to train even harder+

Finally it was time to say goodbye+ Many friendships had been formed and everyone felt that it had been a great experience to participate in the Spring Camp+ We had learnt, not only Kempo techniques, but also that we were all part of something very special+

The realisation that I was finally going to see our headquarters dawned upon me when, coming out of Tadotsu train station, I caught the sight of the coloured roof of Hombu high on the hill+ I had previously seen pictures but the experience of seeing it firsthand was unique+ I felt a great sense of anticipation+

Mizuno Sensei was at hand to meet us and after the initial greetings and welcome at the administration office, led us on a mini tour+ We kept bumping into various Senseis whose names I instantly recognized from stories and anecdotes told to us by senior kenshi+ They joked with our Sensei and made us feel welcome+

The next day, we prepared for our first day of training+ I was surprised how friendly everyone was+ I had expected Japanese students to be somewhat reserved, however, after the initial o-hayo gozaimasu, most were keen on exchanging a few words (in Japanese or English) behind a big smile+

The drum signified the start of training and I listened, for the first time, to the Dokun being recited in Japanese+ It was quite lengthy and made me wish that I better understood Japanese+

After Chinkon and a brief warm-up, the participants divided according to rank and we got down to the serious business of training+

Hombu

After a long flight from London, we stood tired in line at the passport control+ When the official asked the purpose of my visit, I replied Shorinji Kempo seminar+ The official smiled and said I know Shorinji Kempo and stamped my passport+ I felt proud+

That evening, a number of Tokyo-based kenshi, most of who had trained in the UK at one time or another hosted a dinner for our group+ Unfortunately, I had previously agreed to meet some old friends and was sorry to miss the reunion+

Next morning, we flew to Takamatsu and caught the train to Muragame+ We checked in at the Alpha# hotel and went out to explore the town+ We had lunch at a small Udon restaurant near the station+ It was the first time I had seen Udon noodles being freshly rolled, cut and prepared, and they tasted delicious+ After lunch, Sensei had suggested that we visit Hombu to familiarise ourselves with taking the correct train to Tadotsu and getting to Hombu as we were expected early next morning for the start of the seminar+

Japan Visit $""!

Two weeks two trips

Last year, the BSKF organized a visit to Hombu spring camp+ We were very fortunate that Mizuno Sensei decided to accompany our group to Japan+ Some senior BSKF kenshi had visited Japan and Hombu before, for example during the Shorinji Kempo )"th Anniversary celebrations, but for many, this was the first time they would see Japan and moreover participate in a Kempo event overseas+ Twenty seven BSKF kenshi signed up for the trip+ Many UK dojos were represented including Mayfair, UCL, Glasgow, Harrow, City and others+ Kenshi ranks ranged from *th Kyu up to !rd Dan+ Many kenshi had not met prior to the trip but, afterwards, it felt that we had all been friends for a very long time+

In addition to the great experience of spending a week on Shikoku and visiting Hombu, for twelve BSKF kenshi, the experience was further enriched by Mizuno Senseis invitation to accompany him on a tour of the island of Kyushu+ Sensei had decided to visit some of the dojos, currently run by old friends, some of which he had not seen in #& years! I jumped at this opportunity, as I could not think of a better way to see Japan and appreciate Japanese hospitality and culture than as a traveling companion of the guest-of-honour, Mizuno Sensei+

Finally, it was time to say farewell to Kyushu+ I had enjoyed my visit tremendously and made up my mind to come again soon+ The friendliness and generous hospitality of all the people I had met impressed me greatly+

As we had an extra day before we were due in Osaka to catch our flight, we took opportunity to visit Kyoto+ We caught the train to Fukuoka and the Shinkansen to Kyoto+ In Kyoto, we visited Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji Temples+ Unfortunately, time would not allow us to do more and we caught the train to Osaka+ In Osaka, we were kindly invited to dinner with Osaka-based kenshi, many of whom had made a special effort to meet up with old friends from BSKF+ The evening was spent reminiscing and catching up on news+

Early next morning, as I stood in line at the passport control, I replayed the events of the past two weeks in my mind+ So much had happened in such a short time+ So many joyful occasions and new friendships+ So much learnt about Shorinji Kempo and Japan+ I felt a tinge of sadness that I was leaving but very happy to have been a part of a very memorable and special trip+ I didnt say much but when I got back to London, people wondered why I had such a big smile on my face!

My heartfelt gratitude to Mizuno Sensei, Arai Sensei, So Sensei, Takamatsu Sensei, Fuji Sensei, Yoshinaga Sensei, Muramatsu Sensei, Kakimoto Sensei, Miyazaki Senseiby Sami El-Khalifa Mayfair dojo

After the training session, we were invited to dinner at a local restaurant+ It was a great evening out with much merriment, toasts, speeches, a Sumo wrestling song and even an Elvis Priestly performance on stage by very happy British kenshi+

The next morning it was time to move on+ We bid farewell to our hosts and boarded the train to Kumamoto+ After the previous evenings entertainment, most kenshi caught much needed sleep during the journey+

At Kumamoto station we were again met by local Senseis+ I felt great privilege to receive such a welcome+ We were taken on a tour of Suizen-ji-koen Gardens and Kumamoto-jo Castle+ I had read about both these places before arriving in Kumamoto but seeing them first-hand was very special+

In the evening, we trained at a local dojo with many kenshi from Kumamoto and the surrounding area+ I

was pleasantly surprised to see many children enjoying training with the adults+ It felt very much like a family outing+ At the end of training, Mizuno Sensei gave a talk on

Shorinji Kempo in Britain to an attentive audience+ We then presented the kenshi

with an illustrated book about Britain+ It was very well received and much discussed in the subsequent dinner to which we were all invited+ We were

treated to Kyushu specialities such as raw Horsemeat (ba-sushi) and lotus

root (renkon)+ Later on, we enjoyed a night out at a local bar and helped the band perform old favorites on

stage!

Kyushu

Our second week in Japan began next morning with everyone rushing last minute to the train station to catch the train to Okayama+ At last, everyone was on board and settled down for the journey+ Then, we quietly watched as the train disconnected from our carriage and left the station without us+ So much for the start of our tour+ Fortunately, Mizuno Sensei would be meeting us ahead in Beppu+ And, of course, we resolved to be early next time around!

At Okayama, we caught the Shinkansen to Hiroshima+ Everybody in our group agreed that we could not pass by Hiroshima without paying our respects to that unique city+ As we got off the train at midday, everyone was in a jovial and joking mood+ But as we toured the city and visited the A-bomb Dome, Museum and Peace Memorial Park, our mood got more somber and reflective+ The events of that terrible morning touched us all+ I thought long about Kaisos saying the person, the person, the person - everything depends on the quality of the person

We continued our journey to Beppu, changing to a local train at Kitakyushu+ It was a relief to get to Beppu after a long day+ We checked into our hotel and headed straight down to the local onsen+ I had heard a lot about onsen and looked forward to my very first experience+

I proceeded cautiously and dipped my toe into the water+ To say that it felt hot would be an understatement+ I gritted my teeth and proceeded very slowly to melt in, bit by bit+ Needless to say, everyone at the onsen enjoyed my experience very much+ I, on the other hand, would never be unkind to a lobster again+

The next day, we met up with Mizuno Sensei and caught the train to Kagoshima and on to Ibusuki+ At Ibusuki, we stayed at a magnificent hotel+ I later found out that it was the hotel where the French National Football Team had stayed in during the last World Cup+ It had wonderful views and a number of onsen+ We sampled them all+ Later that evening, we further enhanced our onsen authority by being buried up to our necks in hot steaming sand+ Lying in bed, that night, I am sure that I radiated enough heat to warm up a small hotel if only we had been in England+

In the morning, we drove to Kagoshima, stopping on the way at Chiran to view a fascinating street of Samurai houses and gardens+ We also toured a silk factory, a shochu distillery (sampled for educational purposes only!) and visited a traditional medicine clinic, where acupuncture was explained and demonstrated on the brave+

In Kagoshima, we were welcomed to a local dojo and trained that evening with many kenshi+ Everyone was very friendly and very pleased to see Mizuno Sensei and his British kenshi+ I was impressed how easy it was to discuss, albeit with nods and many hand gestures, Shorinji Kempo techniques with local kenshi+ Everyone enjoyed the experience+

Gassho,

I began training in Shorinji Kempo in #('$ while a student at Glasgow University+ In #(') I was fortunate to win an exchange studentship in Japan and I spent that summer training in the Atsugi area (Tokai University Branch and Atsugi Doin), in Tokyo (Yotsuya Doin) and also a spell at Hombu+ At the beginning of #('& I moved London and was a member of Abbey Branch then Danceworks Branch (now Mayfair Branch)+

My years of training in the BSKF hold many fond memories+ Some things that stand out are Mizuno Sensei's famous kiai lesson at Glasgow University in November #('$ and his dry sense of humour(!), Jo Reid's impromptu expert mae ukemi when falling down a hill at Summer Camp, traveling with the BSKF team to Taikai in Europe and Japan, studying juho techniques with Paul White Sensei every Saturday after the class at Brixton, and the incomparable Graham spot of randori? Nabbs Sensei+

I left the UK (holding the rank of shokenshi, $nd dan) to live in Toronto, Canada in #((!+ There is nothing like the infrastructure of the BSKF here in Canada - it's a huge country and the Branches are mostly far apart+ However, we are gradually beginning to establish a group of Branches in the province of Ontario and aim to duplicate many of the features of the BSKF here in future, e+g+ regular black belt courses, gasshuku, taikai, etc+ We hope you'll join us for some of these events+

Finally, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Mizuno Sensei for showing me how to seriously and resolutely pursue the gyo of Shorinji Kempo and for his expert instruction+

Well ! Has it really been !" years since Mizuno sensei taught the boys and girls to play - Shorinji Kempo that is? Yes, and it has flown so fast+ Anyway, I would like to tell you how I first met him way back in #(&*+

I had tried a few different martial arts and wasn't happy with them - Full Contact, Free Style, Shotokan, Boxing, + I had been working in Scotland and decided that on my return to London, I would give Judo a try+ So, I went to Stockwell dojo for my first Judo lesson+ While waiting for the class to begin, a very serious Japanese man carrying a small suitcase and wearing a suit that seemed to be a little too tight, entered the dojo+ He sat watching the different martial arts being practised+ At this time there were not many Japanese people in London, so to see one in a dojo was something quite special+ As he sat there everyone was wondering who he was - including myself+ Was he a Grand Master, a famous Karate man, or a Champion of Sorts?

I had my first Judo lesson which I enjoyed, but felt that, for me, there was something missing+ After the lesson , back in the changing room, some of the instructors were discussing a 'strange' martial art being practised in the training area+ One said, 'There are some weird guys out there+ They're sitting-down cross-legged and a Japanese instructor is straightening their backs with a pole!' I thought to myself, 'I must see this!'

I saw Shorinji Kempo being practised+ There were five kenshi and Mizuno sensei+ I was immediately struck by the punching technique - its natural flow and body movement not to be found in any other martial art+ As I was watching a kenshi came and asked if I was interested? Of course I was, and started practicing Shorinji Kempo the following Saturday at Blackfriars dojo+ From that point on Mizuno sensei has been my teacher+

I have since moved to Switzerland and have had my own branch for #$ years+ Mizuno sensei has been very supportive and has visited me several times, even in the early days when my group consisted of only six kenshi+

I would like to say congratulations and a personal thank you to 'SENSEI' for his !" years devoted to the British Federation+ Also, for being my teacher and friend+
