KEN ZEN ICHINYO
The first characteristic of
ShorinjiKempo is Ken Zen Ichinyo.
Ken refers to the body and zen to the
spirit. The body and mind are not
separate, and so it is impossible to
achieve spiritual awakening or peace
of mind only through mental or
spiritual training.
One should seek a discipline that
develops the mind while
strengthening and training the body in
which it dwells.

KEN ZEN ICHINYO
If you tried to live by thought alone,
neither feeding yourself nor drinkiing,
you would die, and your mind would
not outlive your body.
Training both can be a matter of life
and death. For your thoughts alone
would not save you if a man grabbed
you by the throat and started to choke
off the blood to your head.
Nor would your body alone help if you
lost your loved ones and sank into the
shock of depression.

RIKI AI FUNI
The second characteristic of Shorinji
Kempo is riki ai funi.
Riki represents “strength,” “intellect,”
and “action.”
Ai represents “gentleness,”
“compassion,” and “a non-violent way
of thinking,”
Riki ai funi emphasizes the necessity
for the balance of both power and
compassion.

Knowledge and strength without
compassion and love are merely the
beginnings of violence, but love and
compassion without knowledge or
strength are powerless, mere
decorations without use.
When a person seeks to do
something in the spirit of love, even
the most compassionate goals will
help no one if the person does not act
effectively.

Sometimes we meet people who treat
others with neither mercy nor justice.
To stop them from harming us or
others, we need to develop our own
strength and resources.
If the bully were to change however,
we also need the compassion to
forgive.
Do not forget that your forgiveness
only matters to others when you have
the strength to make it matter.

Do not forget that your forgiveness
only matters to others when you have
the strength to make it matter.
For forgiveness can only be given
from a superior position.
Sometimes that superior position is a
matter of moral superiority, but to an
opponent who has disregarded
morality by attacking a weaker party,
strength is usually the only position of
superiority.

Human are meant to be both strong
and loving. When strength joins with
love, and knowledge joins with
compassion, only then do people fulfil
their potential as human beings.
When you learn to value both your
strength and your love equally,
placing neither one higher than the
other, then you will be capable of
acting, with the principles or Dharma.

SHU SHU KOJU
Don’t be the first to attack. This
principle is important first for its
spiritual value, and only second for
defence’s strategic advantages.
Shorinji Kempo is an art of self-
defence, and this principle is
important not only as a part of a
kenshi’s mental attitude, but also in
the study method of techniques
based on counter attacks.

Martial arts should not be used for the
purpose of hurting others. Shorinji
Kempo is very effective as a way of
stopping violence, and it has been
designed so that if used properly, it
can allow you to immobilize an
opponent without causing any bodily
harm.

GO JU ITTAI
Goho refers to those techniques used
when you seek to overwhelm your
opponent. On the offense, goho
refers to strikes, kicks, hammers and
slashes. On the defense, goho refers
to dodges, parries, deflections, and
blocks.
Juho are techniques used when in
contact with an opponent. By
changing the contact it is possible to
gain control over an opponent.
Defense forms, releases, joint
reverses, throws, and pins are the
principal juho techniques.
