USCCB Prayer for an end to the Pandemic
Let us pray, dearly beloved, for a swift end to the coronavirus pandemic that afflicts our world,
that our God and Father will heal the sick, strengthen those who care for them, and help us
all to persevere in faith. Almighty and merciful God, source of all life,
health and healing, look with compassion on our world, brought low by disease; protect us in the midst of the grave challenges that assail us and in your fatherly providence grant recovery to the
stricken, strength to those who care for them, and success to those working to eradicate this
scourge. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
From the Pastor “Our resiliency—as individuals, as families, as communities, as a nation and as a world—is being tested” during the coronavirus pandemic, wrote School Sister of Notre Dame Rosemarie Nassif in an article titled Who Will We Become After the Coronavirus? published in the May 25 issue of America magazine. “Educators have always gone beyond teach-ing the three R’s of reading, writing and arithme-tic,” wrote the former teacher, administrator, and university president. “And, today we seek to instill in our students that fourth R of resilience.” “Scientists define resilience as the capacity to absorb disturbance and then reorganize so as to regain one’s identity,” she continued. “Resilience is not about not changing. It may require evolving as a result of all that is learned and experienced through a disturbance. We are not all born resilient, but we are all born with the capacity to acquire resilience.” “We can instill resilience by teaching the three W’s,” she emphasized. “The first is worth. Every student needs to believe that he or she is worthy—worthy of our time, our interest, our belief in them, worthy of our highest expecta-tions and, at this moment especially, worthy of our feelings of incompetence. We do not know all the answers, and we do not have to pretend otherwise. The second W is will: The discipline and courage to achieve is essential. Will incor-porates a grit and sustained persistence to overcome obstacles when pursuing your pas-sion or believing in the justice or rightness of a situation. The third W is wonder: Students must have a belief in the promise, a belief in the more that we can become, as well as a belief that we can make a difference by choosing to create the more for our world.” “Let us together spread the grace of resili-ence now so that we will become more than we were before,” she concluded. Sister Rosemarie Nassif, S.S.N.D., is the executive director of the Center for Catholic Ed-ucation at Loyola Marymount University.
Epiphany of Our Lord Church - Sept. 13, 2020 24th Ordinary
PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL
(Excerpts from our archdiocesan guidelines, Rationale, Principles, and Guidelines, appear below.)
Through Baptism and Confirmation all are called to exercise both their right and responsibility to participate fully in the life and mission of the Church. All members of the Church – laity, religious and clergy – according to their proper charisms and roles collaborate in the responsibility for fulfilling its mission. Vatican Council II urged active involvement in the life of the Church by emphasizing the principles of collaborative responsibility, consultation and lay participation. An important structure initiated to foster this collaboration in the mission of the Church by all its members is the Parish Pastoral Council. The Parish Pastoral Council assists pastors in achieving the cooperation of the parishioners and staff in the task of carrying out the mission of the Church on the parish level. It is envisioned that the Parish Pastoral Council is to be a major consultative body in the parish which advises the Pastor who presides over the Council. The purpose of the Parish Pastoral Council is to foster full participation of the entire parish in the life and mission of the Church which reflects the mission of Christ. The Parish Pastoral Council is solely a consultative body with the role of advising and assisting the Pastor in areas of pastoral concerns. The Parish Pastoral Council develops and recommends parish pastoral plans and directions through a consensus process and prayerful reflection. Every Parish Pastoral Council in its membership should be representative of the entire parish, recognizing and reflecting the parish’s rich diversity. A general function of the Parish Pastoral Council includes: Recommending policies, procedures and programs which would assist in the implementation of the parish mission statement and the parish pastoral plan; Reviewing and evaluating the effectiveness of existing programs; and, Reflecting on archdiocesan pastoral priorities and recommending how they can be implemented in the parish. In addition to the Pastor, there should be 12 members. Of these 12 members, six are appointed (three ex officio) and six are elected. Lay members are to be parishioners in good standing. Elected and appointed members serve a three-year term of office with the possibility of serving a second term. Elected and appointed members may serve only two consecutive terms. The Parish Finance Council, mandated by the Code of Canon Law, is separate and distinct from the Parish Pastoral Council. Communication between the two Councils is, however, essential. In order to ensure the communication, a member of the Parish Finance Council serves on the Parish Pastoral Council as an ex officio member. According to our archdiocesan guidelines for Parish Finance Councils, Purpose, Principles and Obligations, each member of the Parish Finance Council shall be appointed for a term of three years. No member shall serve more than two consecutive three-year terms. All members serve at the will of the pastor who will fill all vacancies on the Council.

Holy Rosary Review During the summer, we rolled up our sleeves; we defined our muscles moving EVERYTHING out of the classrooms, and we planned, and we re-planned, and we re-planned again. The result of all that hard work was: WE ARE BACK IN SCHOOL IN PERSON! Teachers and students look different-everyone is wearing masks, and people are missing-some children chose to learn virtually. Our virtual learners log in each morning while wearing their Holy Rosary uniform. They first tune into our morning prayer, flag raising, an-nouncements, and then off they go to participate in a full day of classes via Zoom. Our Holy Rosary faculty live streams their lessons. Our in-school students have their temperatures checked as they enter the building each morning, they sanitize their hands often through-out the day, and then they spend the day with their homeroom, now called a cohort. They do everything with their cohort-learning, eating, and playing. Our Specials teachers (Art, Music, Tech, PE, Library, and Spanish) now move to the homerooms rather than stu-dents traveling to them. Our goal is to limit the move-ment of students and the interaction with other cohorts. Our teachers spent numerous hours training this sum-mer to prepare for their now more complicated teach-ing roles. When we planned our budget this past February, we obviously did not include funding for the upgrading of technology and the purchase of cleaning equipment. Our parents have generously supported our efforts with a COVID fee that we included into their tuition. Several families have been able to provide additional financial help. To the readers of this parish bulletin, we welcome aid to assist in meeting these extraordinary expenses. Thank you. The opening sentence of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities fits our present school environment rather well: “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” It is difficult for ALL of us to adjust to our “new normal,” but we are resilient and with our faith in God, we will come out on top and we will be better for it!
