The Epiphany of the Lord January 4–5, 2020

A Note from Our Pastor,

For my column this week, as we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord Jesus, I am sharing with you my translation of a section of a sermon of St. Peter Chrysologus, Archbishop of Raven-

na in Italy in the 5th century and Doctor of the Church. Back in the early 1990s I wrote my doctoral dissertation on him, and I was thrilled to be invited to publish my translation of many of his sermons in The Fathers of the Church series of the Catholic University of America Press in Washington, D.C., volumes 109 and 110, in 2004 and 2005. Chrysologus tells us what the 3 gifts symbolize that the Magi brought to the Christ-child, and he also explains that what we celebrate at the Feast of the Epiphany or “revelation” or “manifestation” of Christ is also threefold: the visit of the Magi, the miracle at the wedding at Cana, and the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. The follow-ing is from one of his sermons on Epiphany, Sermon 157 (Volume 110, pp. 269-271):

The Magi were of Noah’s race, of the sons of Abraham, who had learned through God that Christ was born, and they had come to know by a profound mystery that this Man was God, a King, and that he was going to die. And so it is that they brought gifts in accord with the faith of their ancestors, such that they knew enough to offer gold to the King, frankincense to God, and myrrh to the One who was going to die, and by such gifts they showed Christ appropriate reverence and honor.

[In addition to the adoration of the Magi on this day] dur-ing Epiphany Christ at the wedding gave water the taste of wine, so that it was on account of power and not pleasure that Christ attended the wedding; not for the sake of cour-tesy, but of a miracle; the reason for his action was to per-form a sign, not to fill his stomach; it was not to provide for drunkenness, but to manifest his divinity. And so the very moment when he changed the nature of the water, the Creator of the elements was revealed by means of the transformation of the created entity. Happy is that wed-ding, happy indeed, at which Christ is present, and which is consecrated not by dissipation, but by his acts of power! What then will not be transformed into grace, when water has been transformed into wine?

During Epiphany Christ entered the basin of the Jordan River to consecrate our Baptism, in order that those whom he had assumed by being born on earth, he would raise up to heaven by being reborn; that he would have free in himself those whom he had seen were captives apart from him; that he would bring to life those whom guilt had made mortal; that he would make those live forever whom death had caused to live only for a time; and that those whom the devil had made exiles on earth, he would make his partners in heaven. The reason, brothers and sisters, that the Holy Spirit descended and infused himself in full at that time, and that the Father proclaims from Heaven: “This is my beloved Son”, was that those [other Two Per-sons of the Trinity] who had shared with the Son in the one activity of creating us would together impart the grace to restore us.

Thus it was that Christ was recognized as God at different times, but on one and the same day: by the Magi’s gifts, by the transformation of the water, and by the voice of his Father as a threefold testimony, and that from the triple revelation of Christ the one hallowed feast of Epiphany was established.

Gospel : Matthew 2:1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.” After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

Pastoral Planning

January 5 ~ The Epiphany of the Lord We know this story so well it is a good example of perse-verance. The Magi were determined to follow the star—“overjoyed at seeing the star…and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother…and did him homage.” Our culture urges us to follow a lot of “stars” these days: sports stars, rock stars, movie stars, stars famous for any number of reasons. But the question is, do they lead us to Christ? Maybe it’s time to take a lesson from the Magi and look for Christ. These other “stars” will come and go but Jesus Christ will never leave us!

In recent bulletins there has been reference made to an “early publication deadline” for the Weekly Bulletin. We will be back to normal next weekend, but I thought a bit of background might be helpful to explain why this happens. We contract with the J. S. Paluch Company to produce 1,500 bulletins each week and have them delivered by Thursday preceding the weekend. On a normal week this means submitting everything by the end of the day on the preceding Tuesday. The scheduling problem comes about particularly at Christmas and New Year’s because they are moveable holidays that make delivery of the bulletins dif-ficult. This means that we have to have all of the material to the company by the end of the previous week to insure that we receive the finished product before the following weekend. On another bulletin-related note, in addition to publishing the bulletin at no charge each week, the Paluch Company also gives the parish a $10,000 rebate each year and several other items including the weekly Children’s Bulletin. The company gets its revenue from the advertis-ing on the last two pages of thee Bulletin. We very much appreciate the loyalty of those advertisers and hope that from time to time you have a chance to look at the ads and patronize our sponsors.

The Offertory Collection for the weekend of December 21–22 is below but because of the publication deadline the collection totals for the Christmas Collection for the Cler-gy Fund and the Offertory Collection for December 28–29 were not available, so the results will be in next week’s Bulletin. The Grand Annual Appeal continues to do well as it enters its final weeks. As of December 23rd, 377 households had contributed $167,684, bringing us very close to our budgeted goal of $170,000. When a parishioner is hospitalized…. St. Agatha is a wonderful family of faith. It is im-portant to our priests and pastoral staff that we do all we can to stay in touch with parishioners who may not be able to attend Mass due to illness and/or are hospi-talized. Due to HIPPA (privacy) laws, the parish is not informed of parishioners who are in the hospital or in nursing homes. The local hospitals have a priest chap-lain on call who attends to emergency needs and cele-brates the sacraments of Reconciliation and/or the Anointing of the Sick as requested.
