Social Networking can be defined as a phenomenon that has recently taken over the web, allowing more
connectivity and interaction between web users. Several websites, such as Facebook and MySpace are labeled
as "virtual communities."
MERITS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES• Social media is leading the biggest transformation in communication and advertising since e-mail.
• Most social networking websites typically have an open membership. This means that anyone can become a member, no matter what their hobbies, beliefs, or views are. However, once you are inside this online community, you can begin to create your own network of friends.
Other merits of social networking sites are:

DEMERITS OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES
• The most glaring disadvantage of social networking sites is the risk of identity theft and fraud.
• The personal information of users can be used by dubious people for illegal activities. Information like the e-mail address, name, location, and age can be used to commit online crimes.
• Usually once information is published on the internet, it is there forever.
• Sites like Facebook have been used to make the decision in whether an employer will hire someone.
• The open line of communication can lead adults to talk to minors in appropriately.
• Can easily be used as a tool to publicly or privately cyberbully.
• They can spread malicious humor among your friends and also download and morph your photos.
• Social networking may promote isolation and may lead to mental health issues.
• 91% of social networking teens claim they use the sites to stay in touch with friends they see frequently, while 82% use the sites to stay in touch with friends they rarely see in person.
• 72% of all social networking teens use the sites to make plans with friends; 49% use the sites to make new friends
• Boys who use social networking sites are more likely than girls of the same age to use social networking sites to make new friends (60% vs. 46%)
• Just 17% of all social networking teens say they use the sites to flirt.
• Boys who use social networking sites are more than twice as likely as older girls to say they use the sites to flirt; 29% report this compared with just 13% of older girls
