Cumbria View Care Services would like to wish all our fabulous carers and

clients a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

This is our final issue until January 2015. We’d like to wish

all our readers and advertisers a very

Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New

Year!!!

A recruitment drive is being launched to find 24 new on-call firefighters who can earn £6,000 a year saving lives in Cumbria. Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service is looking for men and women from all different backgrounds who are fit, healthy, up for a challenge and prepared to commit to the role.

Firefighters are needed at Alston, Arnside, Aspatria, Bootle, Coniston, Frizington, Kirkby Lonsdale, Kirkby Stephen, Lazonby, Longtown, Maryport, Milnthorpe, Shap, Silloth, Staveley and Walney.

Call rates vary from fire station to fire station, with some of Cumbria’s on-call stations responding to over 200 calls a year and others as few as 15.

Two rounds of recruitment earlier in the year to find on-call firefighters at 25 stations proved successful, but additional firefighters are still needed.

If successful, the new on-call firefighters will be expected to attend a two-hour training session at their fire station each week plus additional core training courses in order to maintain operational skills. The nature of the on-call duty system also requires firefighters to live or work within five minutes of their station so they can respond to emergency calls. On-call firefighters are contracted to provide an agreed number of ‘availability’ hours and only attend the fire station when they have received an emergency callout.

The pay scales for an on-call firefighter are: • A retainer of £2,158 - £2,877 dependent on the cover provided • An hourly rate of £13.14 when competent in your role • An on-call firefighter can earn around £6,000 a year

To apply people will need to complete an application form, carry out a number of nationally recognised tests and have an interview and medical check.

Councillor Barry Doughty, the county council’s cabinet member for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, said: “On-call firefighters play a crucial role in our communities and are called upon to attend the full range of incidents including fires, floods, road traffic collisions, chemical spills and more, and work alongside their full-time colleagues at many incidents.

“I’d urge people in the areas we’re looking to recruit to consider applying to become part of the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service team.

“There’s lots of advice and support available to help get potential recruits through the selection process and firefighters on hand to answer any questions they might have about what the role entails.”

Open days are being held at the stations where recruits are needed so people interested in becoming on-call firefighters can visit their local station to chat to the crews, have a go at some of the tests and find out more about what this lifesaving role entails.

Open days are taking place at the following times:

Milnthorpe – Monday 8 December 4pm-7pmArnside – Monday 15 December 4pm-7pm.Shap – Saturday 13 December 11am-2pm and Monday 29 December 4pm-7pm.Kirkby Stephen – Saturday 3 January 11am-2pmKirkby Lonsdale – Saturday 13 December 2pm-5pm and Thursday 18 December 4pm-7pm.Staveley – Sunday 14 December 11am-2pmWalney – Saturday 6 December 11am-2pm and Thursday 11 December 4pm-7pmBootle – Wednesday 17 December 4pm-7pm and Saturday 20 December 11am-2pm.Coniston – Tuesday 9 December 2pm-6pm and Saturday 20 December 2pm-6pm.Frizington – Thursday 11 December 4pm-6pm
