Instrument Creation – Making Maracas, listening to Maracas (Cuban Suite) by Benjamin

Ambrose

OBJECTIVE

1. Understanding of Classical Composers, Instrument Knowledge

2. Students will listen at their desks to teacher explain the music they will hear when

listening to the piece Maracas (Cuban Suite) in the background

1. Following directions, creativity,

2. Students will watch demonstration by teacher on how to make their own

maracas.

1. Musical Analysis/Listening/Dancing/Playing Instruments

2. Teacher will lead students in a discussion about the music they heard while

making maracas. Questions may include: Where are maracas from? Did the students

hear the maracas in the piece? Students will use their own maracas, after they have

tried, to try and imitate the real recording of Maracas (Cuban Suite) as they move to

the beat in the classroom.

PROCEDURE:

Experience 1:

Students will organize at their desk and learn background information about 

maracas and the materials they will be using to create their own instruments.

Experience 2:

Students will watch demonstration by teacher on how to make the instrument using

the provided materials.

Experience 3:

Students will listen attentively while making their own instruments in order to

answer the discussion questions posted clearly. Students will discuss piece of musicand maracas with teacher.

Experience 4:

Students will perform and dance with their instruments to the recording of the

Ambrose piece.

Salsa Dancing

OBJECTIVE

1. Dancing, Latin American culture, Improvisation

2. Students will understand and perform the basic steps of a Latin American dance.

Students will have the chance to create their own version of salsa dancing.

1. Geography, Cultural Significance

2. Students will listen to and engage in a brief discussion of Cuban music,

composers, and dance culture. Students will be able to locate Cuba and its

surrounding countries on a world map.

1. Analysis to American music

2. Students will make connections between Cuban salsa dancing and the dance

music of the 2000’s (hip hop, reggaeton, etc).

PROCEDURE:

Experience 1:

Students will learn basic steps of salsa dancing with assistance of teacher. Students

will improvise the dance steps on their own to Latin American music.

Experience 2:

Students engage in a cultural discussion about Cuban music, composers, and

geographic relation to other cultures.

Experience 3:

Students will complete a formal reflection on their salsa dancing experience and

compare/contrast the Latin American salsa dancing to the dancing of their own culture.
