Happy Father's Day We wish all fathers and father figures a terrific day on Sunday. Keep an eye out for coming events such as the Bowling night this week and the Amazing Altius Adventure coming in September. Russell Bembridge Principal

Athletics Carnivals - Friday 1 September

The House Athletics Carnivals will be held this Friday September 1 for Pre Primary- Year 6. The Junior Carnival (PP- Yr 2) will be approx 9:00-11:20am with the Senior Carnival (Yr 3-6) approx 11:30-2:30pm. We are monitoring weather reports ahead of Friday's carnivals and will advise families via text on Thursday. At this point, we are hoping to hold the Carnival Cafe on Friday, even if the carnivals are postponed. If postponed we propose holding the sales for students at lunch in the Altius Centre. In either scenario, students are allowed to bring change (not large notes) to allow them to purchase treats from the cafe (if their family agree). Following the House Carnivals, Interschool teams will be selected.

Athletics Carnival Cafe - Friday 1 Sept - 9.30am till 2pm

During the sports carnival, weather permitting, at designated breaks parent/family volunteers from the Pre-Primary classes will be running the Carnival Cafe. On sale will be hotdogs (sausage sizzle), baked goods, lolly bag, small packets of chips, Tiny Teddy biscuits & Shapes biscuits, Slushies (iced drinks) and water.

The price of items will range from 50c to $3, with a limit of 3 items each, so please make sure children have small change. While we welcome parents using the cafe throughout the day, we ask that families don't bring food items to competitors when they are in the bays. We want competitors in bays to be supporting their team or preparing for their next event.

And there will be a mobile coffee van for parents!

Communicable Diseases

Parents are reminded that, in the event of your child contracting a contagious disease it is vitally important that they are kept home until the doctor advises that they may return to school. It is also important to notify the school of the disease. Recently, the school was notified of a case of Scarlet Fever. As is required, the child was kept home from school, doctor's advice was sought and the school was notified of the disease. Every effort has been made by the family to ensure that this disease has not been transmitted to other members in the community. We are pleased to learn that the student has recovered. Note: Scarlet Fever is a serious streptococcal throat infection which also causes a red (scarlet) rash. It is treated with antibiotics and most people recover in about a week. If left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body and cause serious health problems. Further information can be found by using the following link: https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/scarlet-fever We appreciate the way families consider other students and our staff by keeping sick students at home and notifying us before students with a communicable illness return to school.

Tournament of Minds... a competition for creative thinking - Well done to all teams!

Page 5: EDLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER N NEWSLETTER 30.8.2017.pdf · 2017-08-31 · EDLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 'Experience the Opportunities' Wednesday 30 August, 2017 35 Kingsway

Nedlands Primary School entered five teams in Tournament of the Minds this year. Each team consisted of a mix of seven students from Years 5 and 6. Teams worked on their long term challenge for six weeks. On Saturday 26th August, all five teams performed at Edith Cowan University (ECU). One team performed in the area of Language/Literature, two in Social Sciences, one in the area of Maths/Engineering and one in Science Technology. The solution for each challenge had to be presented in the form of a 10 minute play. TOM encourages students to develop and use creative and problem solving skills as well as cooperation and collaboration. During the last six weeks, teams met every weekend for at least two hours and used two lunch times a week for meetings and spontaneous problem solving practice. All teams worked together, to present informative and very entertaining performances - Well Done! Congratulations to Nedlands 2, a Social Science Team, who achieved a place in the State Finals on Sunday 10th September at Edith Cowan University, Joondalup. We wish them all the best. A special thank you to all the parent facilitators - Miriam Stanborough, Sarah Smith, Kate Steward, Anna Dartnell, Natalie Oddy, Jamie Ho, Rosalind George, Tania Hudson and Damon Ezekiel, Anna Davila, Vanitha Budhavaram, Sophie Bai, Angus and Melina Argyle, Jody Batt and Paul Belcher who welcomed teams into their homes to work on the challenges during the past six weeks. Thank you to all parents for supporting students during this time and also the teachers, Mrs Sahai, Mrs Fullgrabe and Miss Clamback. Daryl Morris-Hall TOM Co-ordinator

'CONNECT' Integrated Online Communication is coming to Nedlands PS In response to feedback from our community, Nedlands PS will be implementing a new method of online communication, using the integrated online communication system 'CONNECT' provided by the Department of Education. 'CONNECT' provides a secure environment for communication between home and school and can be accessed via a computer (for full access) or mobile device (access to the most commonly used features).

Page 7: EDLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER N NEWSLETTER 30.8.2017.pdf · 2017-08-31 · EDLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 'Experience the Opportunities' Wednesday 30 August, 2017 35 Kingsway

An information pack with details is coming home for each family. Please read through the information pack carefully so that you are familiar with how the system will be implemented. As part of the implementation, parents are asked to complete the Student Update Form, which should be returned to your class teacher as soon as possible. Parent information sessions will be run in the library for those that would prefer to receive their information face-to-face and have the opportunity to ask questions. The session times are: Tuesday 5 September 5:00 pm (1 hour) Thursday 7 September 3:15 pm (1 hour) Wednesday 20 September 3:15 pm (1 hour) Thursday 21 September 7:30 am (1 hour) Please use the reply slip in the information pack to reserve your place in one of these workshops if you are interested. For further information, please contact Julie Simpfendorfer by calling the school or emailing [email protected]

NAPLAN Online Trial

Last week, Nedlands PS participated in a trial of NAPLAN Online. Some Year 3 & 5 students did a 'mock' NAPLAN session to see if the computer system could handle the projected bandwidth load. Pleasingly, our computer system managed the load well. We were able to identify some minor issues that need to be addressed before full implementation of NAPLAN Online in 2019. We have also been able to give some constructive feedback about the questions and how students answered them. The students enjoyed doing NAPLAN in a different way, and are looking forward to full implementation. If you have any questions about this matter, feel free to contact Julie Simpfendorfer or Sandy Cottam on 9386 2278.

Earn & Learn for Robotics at Nedlands Primary School

Nedlands Primary School is participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. This year our stickers will go towards Robotics equipment to ensure we have equipment available for every year level. If you happen to be shopping at Woolworths between Wednesday 26th July and Tuesday 19th September and receive some Earn & Learn stickers, please reserve them for Nedlands Primary School. You may like to get your friends and relatives to save any stickers they receive too. We will be launching a competition for the class that collects the most stickers. More details will be available as the date draws closer. For further information, please contact Julie Simpfendorfer by calling 9386 2278 or by email [email protected]
