Newly turned three-year-old fillies will contest the first graded stakes for their division, the G2 Santa Ynez Stakes. Bob Baffert has a strong hand in this field with three of the seven entrants and a solid set that is. The most established of the trio #7 BAST already a multiple graded stakes winner, and recent winner of the G1 Starlet Stakes last month at Los Alamitos. Her resume speaks for itself, though does find a curious placement based on her recent races and shortening up in distance for this race. A strong Quad I Square, #1 AUBERGE will make her first start against winners and a threat to go gate-to-wire just as she did on debut. She earned a strong B+ OptixGRADE in her October 27 th effort. She has been freshened off that race and by all accounts training well (noted half mile bullet drill on December 29 th as the best of 142 runners at the distance) coming into this race. Prat will be taking over the riding as Van Dyke will stick aboard BAST. In addition to that pair, Baffert will also send out #2 GOLDEN PRINCIPAL off her debut maiden win on November 30 th at Del Mar. She earned a solid 93 OptixFIG for the effort though did have a favorable PERFECT trip. That is worth keeping in mind as well as her position on Standard as a Circle in Quad I, compared to her Square stablemates. In terms of speed figures as well as Circles in both Quad I/III both #3 LOVELY LILIA and #4 PAIGE ANNE look a bit below their competition.
