    1. SCOPE1.1.1. This specification covers the requirements for the design and installationof driven steel pile foundations.

    2. APPLICABLE REGULATIONS, CODES, STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS2.1. TLM Specifications

2.1.1. All driven steel pile foundations shall be designed and constructed inaccordance with this specification. The following TLM specificationsform part of this specification: ES1.Q102 - Reinforced Concrete

2.2. Other Regulations, Codes and Standards2.2.1. All driven steel pile foundations shall comply with the latest edition of thefollowing:

Local codes and bylaws Provincial Building Code Canadian Standards Association (CSA) S16.1-M Steel Structures for Buildings Limit States Design W47 Welding Qualification Code W48 Series for Welding Electrodes W59.1 General Specification for Welding of Steel Structures G40.20-M General Requirements for Rolled or Welded Structural

Quality Steel G40.21-M Structural Quality Steels2.2.2. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM):

ASTM A252 Welded and Seamless Steel Pipe Piles ASTM D1143 Standard Method of Testing Piles under AxialCompressive Load

2.2.3. American Petroleum Institute (API): API Spec 5L Specification for Line Pipe API Spec 5LS Specification for Spiral Welded Line Pipe

2.2.4. Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Regulations

2.3. Conflct Between Specifications, Codes and Standards2.3.1. Where a conflict occurs between this specification and any specification, regulation, code or standard which has been specified for a particular

service or item of equipment, then TLM shall be consulted and a rulingin writing shall be obtained before any work is started.2.3.2. Where regulatory codes or regulations conflict with this specification, themore rigid specification shall govern.

    3. DESIGN3.1.1. The driven steel piles may be either HP shapes or pipe.

3.1.2. HP shape piles shall have a minimum yield strength of 260 MPa andshall conform to CSA G40.20-M and G40.21-M.3.1.3. The minimum yield strength for pipe piles shall be 241 MPa for ASTM

A252 Grade 2 and API 5L or 5LS Grade B.3.1.4. The design parameters, including minimum lengths, for driven steelpiles shall be as recommended by a geotechnical consultant.3.1.5. The design loads shall be the governing reactions from the supportedpile caps, grade beams, buildings, structures or equipment as well asany negative skin friction where there may be subsiding soiL.3.1.6. The minimum spacing of piles shall be three pile or diagonal diametersbut not less than 750mm.3.1.7. Where a group of piles are used, the design capacity shall be based ona rational analysis of the group as a whole or a recognized effciencyformula.3.1.8. Where a portion of a pile is not adequately laterally supported by thesoil, it shall be designed to meet the compression member stabilityrequirements of CSA S16.1-M.3.1.9. Horizontal loads on piles shall be resisted by the lateral load capacity of

the soil and/or by using battered piles. Ties between opposinghorizontal forces shall not be permitted where the tie may interfere withother or future foundations, or the proper installation of utilities or a floorslab. The relationship between maximum deflection and allowablehorizontal force shall be determined in accordance with the formulaefound in the paper: LATERAL RESISTANCE OF PILES IN COHESIVESOILS, Journal of Soil Mechanics and Foundation, Division ASCE -Paper 3825, Volume 9 SM-2, March 1964, Bengt v. Broms.

3.1.10. Piles supporting concrete structures shall have a 75mm clearance to therebar and have 150mm minimum embedment. The embedment shallprovide 150mm minimum cover over the pile. Dowells shall be used.3.1.11. Pipe piles must meet the following minimum requirements:

    . 150mm diameter;

    schedule 40 pipe.

3.1.12. Steel piles shall be provided with suitable protection where corrosion isa hazard.

3.1.13. Field and shop splicing details shall be provided on the drawings usingfull penetration welds.4. WORKMANSHIP

4.1.1. The hammer shall be capable of developing a blow with a minimumenergy of 27,000 Joules.4.1.2. Pile driver leads shall be constructed to allow free movement of the

hammer and held in position at the top and bottom with guys or stiffbraces to ensure support to the pile during driving. Use inclined leadsfor battered piles.4.1.3. The piling heads shall be cut squarely and reinforced if necessary. Asuitable driving cap shall be used to protect the pile head and to holdthe axis of the pile in line with the hammer.4.1.4. Deliver hammer blows in the direct axis of the pile.4.1.5. The Contractor shall take all necessary measures, to the satisfaction ofTLM to prevent damage to any underground pipelines, other services, foundations, survey markers, overhead wires and pipes, etc., that are inthe vicinity of the work.4.1.6. Driving records for each pile shall be submitted to TLM on a daily basisand contain the following information:

type and make of hammer, stroke or energy; driving cap and cushion information; pile identification, size and length; sequence of driving piles in a group; number of blows per 300mm for entire length of pile and number ofblows per 25mm for the last 150mm; final tip and cut-off elevation;. other pertinent information such as an interruption of continuousdriving, pile damage, location and alignment deviation, field splices, orany obstruction encountered.

4.1.7. The minimum driving depth shall be that shown on the drawings, or topractical refusal which shall be. considered to the 2 blows/cm at ahammer energy level of not less than 27,000 Joules. Practical refusalshall provide the minimum of embedment depth, as recommended in thegeotechnical report.

4.1.8. Redrive any piles lifted during the driving of adjacent piles.4.1.9. Where seasonal frost is encountered, holes shall be predrilled throughthe frost prior to driving the piles.4.1.10. Splicing pipe piles will be done by cutting the deformed end on thedriven pile and preparing the end with a proper bevel and land. Properwelding sequence (root pass, filler and capping) is to be followed for thepipe size and schedule.4.1.11. Splicing HP shapes will be done by offsettng the flanges with a 300mmcut down the axis of the web. The prepared edges shall be bevelled.

    5. QUALITY CONTROL5.1.1. The maximum permitted horizontal deviation from the design location atcut-off elevation shall be 75mm.5.1.2. The maximum permitted axial deviation from the design angle shall be2%.5.1.3. Piles driven out of position, driven below cut-off elevation or damagedduring driving or handling will be rejected.5.1.4. Driven piles shall be repaired or replaced to the satisfaction of TLM.

5.1.5. Piles failing to indicate design load capacity by a recognized pile drivingformula shall be load tested or otherwise proven, to the satisfaction ofTLM, to indicate an acceptable load capacity.
