President’s Message Well, it looks like we’ve had another very successful year. Our club is healthy and thriving. Our new members bring vitality and energy to our meetings. I’d like to thank the SGVCSS officers, board members, committee members, and dedicated volunteers for the tremendous amount of work that made this year’s activities possible. We look forward to 2017. We have excellent field trips and speakers planned and a few surprises throughout the year as well.

Our Holiday Party will be Sunday, December 4th. The fun begins at 5:00 pm. We need volunteers as early as 3:00 pm to help with the setup. Bring one of your delicious side dishes or deserts. Please bring enough food for you and your guests to ensure we have enough for everyone. Our Holiday Party is the number one social event on our SGVCSS calendar. Almost all of our members attend. I promise that you will have a great time. And yes, there will be live entertainment again this year. IMPORTANT NOTE: There will be no warming up your goodies before serving and no washing dishes after dinner. Break out those crock pots and warming trays. On a personal note, it’s been a joy to serve as president for the last four years. I’ve made many new friends and learned a few things along the way. The torch will be passed to the capable hands of incoming President Tom Vermilion. I look forward to serving as a director and in other capacities in the coming years. Thank you all for your dedication and support. See you at the Holiday Party!

December 2016 COMMUNIQUÉ
ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY! Instead of our usual monthly meeting, in December, we’ll have our annual
Holiday Party & Potluck Dinner on Sunday, December 4th, in Ayers Hall
at the LA County Arboretum. Park in the side parking lot and enter through
the gate next to the hall.
Setup starts at 3:00 p.m., and WE NEED YOUR HELP to set up tables and
the room. Dinner starts at 5:00 p.m. The club provides turkey, ham, gravy,
plates, cups, and utensils. Club members provide appetizers, salads, relishes, side
dishes, and desserts. Please bring stuffing, yams, that yummy casserole your fami-
ly begs for….anything you’d like to share. And please bring enough to feed both
you and your guests (one dish per person ensures that we have enough food for
everyone). There are some fantastic cooks in our club, and the meal is always
outstanding.
Please call your dinner coordinators Rebecca Mallonee (714)299-1304 or
Mary Brumbaugh (626)201-8615 to volunteer your set-up/clean-up
services, or for questions.
We still need cooks FOR TURKEYS AND HAMS, so please call to
volunteer.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We will have limited access to the kitchen this year, so
plan your dish accordingly. No warming up before serving, nor washing dishes af-
ter dinner. Break out those crock pots and warming trays!
Gift Exchange: Anyone may participate in this optional activity. Bring one
cactus, succulent, or related item per person. It must be in good condition
(something you would like to receive). Attach a label with your name on one side
and the species on the other. The item that is deemed most desirable will be sold
during the auction. The person who brought in that item gets first pick from all
remaining items. The person who brought that item gets to pick next, and so on
Holiday Plants: Each member receives a Holiday Plant as a gift from the Club.
Members are invited to bring in plants from previous Holiday Parties to show
how well they have been grown.

* Other items may include artwork such as paintings and pottery,
or just neat items with cactus/succulents on them.

* Club gets 25% of the proceeds, seller gets 75%.
* Label your auction items with your name and the minimum bid you’ll accept.

December 2016 COMMUNIQUÉ
Thanks From John Matthews As your Winter Show Sales Chairman, I want to acknowledge (as best as I can
recollect) those who made a special effort to make the sales effort run so
smoothly. These efforts include setup, tear down and everything in between:
manning cash registers and credit card machine, handling club vendor tags,
keeping carryout boxes available, manning holding tables and exits /entrances,
providing food and drink, and getting the final checks to the vendors. For all of
the above efforts, thanks to (apologies in advance to anyone I missed) Manny
Rivera, Tom Glavich , John Lemos, Jim Hanna, Ken Hanke, Louise Guerin,
Roberta Hanna, Evelynn Stevens, Cindy Arakaki, Jerry Williams, Joe Wujcik,
Walter Weststeyn, Rob MacGregor, Richard Roosman, Camille Rutkowski,
Margie and Victoria Wilson, Rebecca Mallonee , Mary Brumbaugh , Barbara
Hall, all our club and regular vendors who provided a great selection of sales
plants and pots, and especially to our customers who bought it all
