WHY DO PIANOS GO OUT OF TUNE?

Pianos actually stay in tune much better than most stringed instruments! A guitar can go out of tune within an hour, and a violin might need tuning after only 15 or 20 minutes of playing, but a piano only needs to be tuned about once every three to six months. This is because a piano has heavy, steel wires held by an iron frame. The steel wires are under a lot of tension, which keeps them stable even when they are struck by the hammers - in other words, the piano will go out of tune whether you play it or not (It’s the weather!).

Both iron and steel expand and contract in response to changes in heat and cold, but very little. Wood does respond to changes in both temperature and relative humidity. Wooden objects in a room absorb some of the moisture from the air, causing them to expand. Although the frame of a piano is iron, the soundboard and bridge are made of wood. The strings are pushing downwards on a maple bridge. When a note is played, the bridge transfers their vibration to the soundboard, which amplifies it. When the relative humidity rises, the soundboard swells, pressing the bridge into the strings. This increases the tension in the strings, raising the pitch. When the relative humidity falls, the soundboard shrinks, lowering the tension in the strings and the pitch. As small changes in humidity cause the strings to raise and lower in pitch, they never settle back quite into the same place they were before. Slowly, they get more and more out of tune. Usually, the pitch will slowly drop as the piano gets more out of tune. The strings are all under different amounts of tension, which can cause them to go out of tune at different rates. When this happens, the piano goes out of tune with itself. That is what causes that sour, unpleasant sound that really out-of-tune pianos have. Here are three top reasons to keep up a regular tuning schedule: 1. Pianos that are in tune get played a lot more! 2. Someone in your family will probably want the piano in the future,

and you’ll save them hundreds or thousands of dollars by keeping the piano in great shape.

3. Pianos with records of regular maintenance are very rare, and have terrific resale value!

CAPMT CONVENTION 2014INSPIRING THE 21ST CENTURY MUSICIAN

The annual CAPMT convention will be held in Northern California this year. It will be held at the Hyatt Hotel in Santa Clara on January 31- February 2 2014.

The highlights of the convention include a master class and recital by Dr. Peter Mack, professor of piano at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Mack has performed throughout the United States and Europe, as well as in Australia and the former Soviet Union. He is the winner of the New Orleans, Young Keyboard Artists and Pacific International Piano Competitions. His prize in the Sherman–Clay competition included a Steinway grand piano. Mack is well known for his extensive repertoire, having performed twenty–five concertos with orchestras. He is equally in demand as a performer, clinician, convention artist, and teacher, and his pupils are frequent winners of local, national, and international competitions.

We will also be having our very own Hans Boepple give a lecture and masterclass. A Steinway International Artist with a career of over forty years, Hans Boepple has received numerous performance honors, including First Prize in the International J.S. Bach Competition (Washington, DC). the Kosciuszko Chopin (NYC), the MTNA national competitions and the Coleman Chamber Music Award (Los Angeles). National Public Radio and Voice of America have broadcast his live performances. He recorded the complete Beethoven Bagatelles for Orion Master Recordings and three CD’s for the Kjos Music Company. He is Professor of Music at Santa Clara University, and his students have earned more than 150 state, national, and international awards. He has received the Master Teacher Certificate from the Music Teachers National Association and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Association of Professional Music Teachers.

In addition we are holding an open call for proposals for the convention. Please submit a one page proposal to Carmina Glicklich at [email protected].

STUDENT PERFORMANCE COMPETITIONS

All applications must be entered online by September 11, 2013, 3:00 PM EST. Please go to www.mtna.org and click on “Competitions” for complete information. Online registration will be available in August.

The California State MTNA Competition will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) Department of Music in Santa Barbara, CA. Winners of the Performance Competitions will be asked to perform at the CAPMT State Conference in April 2014 in Northern California.

Please note that, in addition to the registration fee paid directly online to the MTNA national office, there is an additional teacher fee for the state of California. This helps us cover the high costs in California and enables us to continue to offer these wonderful opportunities for members and students. This fee per teacher is based on the number of students entered and offsets facility rental, judging costs (housing, meals, transportation), piano tuning, etc.

This additional teacher fee, payable to CAPMT, must be mailed separately to the Competitions Chair, Dr. Jacqueline Petitto, 1800 Golden Oak St., Thousand Oaks, CA 91320-5979. The deadline for submission of the teacher fee is October 1, 2013. The teacher fee schedule is as follows:

Junior Competitions: $20 per entrant Senior Competitions: $25 per entrant Young Artist Competitions: $30 per entrant Chamber Music Competitions (two categories - string and wind): $40 per ensemble

Please feel free to email Dr. Jacqueline Petitto with any questions.

VOCAL ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS

This new program is open to 2 to 8 singers singing either unaccompanied or with accompaniment. Each singer will sing a separate vocal line. The teacher must be a CAPMT member and one member of the ensemble must be a student of that teacher. The pianist may be the teacher or other professional and will not be judged. (The rationale for this is that it allows teachers to choose repertoire without the concern of finding a student able to play challenging orchestral reductions). Selections may be vocal duets, trios, quartets etc, madrigals, excerpts from operas, part songs and the genre can include musical theater. Teachers will apply to their local Ensemble Auditions Chair and the auditions will take place at the district level at the same time as Ensemble Auditions. Those ensembles receiving a rating of 5 will be invited to perform at the Northern or Southern Festival. The Southern Festival date and location is TBA. The Northern Festival is combined with the 2014 State Conference. As with Ensemble Auditions the teacher will select the level of the ensemble. Full details and the application form will be on the website over the summer. For the date and the location of the auditions, please contact your district/chapter chair or District Coordinator/Chapter President.

PIANO AUDITIONS

The CAPMT Piano Auditions program is open to any student of any age and level. Summer is a good time to have students begins the pieces for these auditions, which take place in the fall. Pianists perform two solos (one chosen from the published repertory list and one of their choosing) and one accompanied piece from an updated list that is published online (www.capmt.org). The two solo pieces must be memorized. As in the past, CAPMT recommends that the teacher not perform the second part of the accompanied piece for these auditions. Students receiving a performance rating of 5 will be invited (but not required) to perform at the CAPMT Piano and Ensemble Festival, Northern or Southern Division. The Southern Festival date and location is TBA. The Northern Festival is combined with 2014 State Conference. The application guidelines will be available online at www.capmt.org (please select the Student Programs link and go to the Piano Auditions information). For the date and the location of the auditions, please contact your district/chapter chair or District Coordinator/Chapter President.

STUDENT EVALUATIONS

All CAPMT Districts with the exception of District 1 have held and completed Student Evaluations for 2013. Compared with last year, total numbers of students are up based on reporting Districts. Since one District has yet to submit a report, final numbers are not yet available.

To cover rising costs of expenses, fees for the 2014 Student Evaluations have been raised for Levels 5 – 10 from $30 to $40.

Next year’s fees will be: Preparatory A – Level 4 $30 Levels 5 – 10 $40

Several Districts have inquired about a pass/fail level for future Student Evaluations.

Presently, a numerical score is given for both the Performance and Music Literacy segments. However, no indication of a “pass” level is given. Students receive a certificate of participation only. A number of teachers feel that a “pass” level should be instituted (70% has been suggested).

Feedback from CAPMT teachers concerning such a major change is crucial. There are three possible choices:1. No change – leave things as they are.2. Add a pass level. The Certificate would state that the student had successfully completed requirements

(demonstrated competence, or similar wording) for a given Level. A possible refinement of this option would be to offer an “honors” certificate to students scoring above a certain level.

3. Give individual Districts or Chapters a choice of the above alternatives.

Please offer your personal opinion to the CAPMT Student Evaluations Chair.

Karen Rogers, [email protected]

ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS

The CAPMT Ensemble Auditions provide students an opportunity to perform in ensembles at the chapter/district level and is open to any combination of piano, instrumental, and vocal students of any level and age. The guidelines are designed to encourage students to explore the musical challenges inherent in the study and performance of ensemble music. All ensembles that receive a rating “5” at the district/chapter level will be invited (but not required) to perform at the CAPMT Piano and Ensemble Festival, Northern or Southern Division. The Northern Festival will take place with 2014 State Conference. The Southern Festival date and location is TBA. The application guidelines will be available online at www.capmt.org (please select the Student Programs link and go to the Ensemble Auditions information). For the date and the location of the auditions, please contact your district/chapter chair or District Coordinator/Chapter President.
