Dear Parents The number of articles in this publication illustrates what an excit- ing half-term we have experi- enced at de Ferrers. Students have been involved in a wide range of challenging activities. The Technology Show was proba- bly our most enterprising and successful to date and this was followed by an exceptional per- formance of ‘Back to the 80’s’ starring 120 students! Year 7 Activity Days involved, in part, a complete transformation of a large area of wasteland into a beautiful Dove Garden area. We’ve also completed and com- missioned our new Sports Hall! Over 400 students have taken external examinations this half- term and we are looking forward to some excellent results this summer. I must comment on the excellent behaviour and atten- dance of Year 11 during this time. Both Year 11 and 13 finished the year with very successful social occasions – the Year 11 Prom and the Sixth Form Ball. Apart from the burst water main that closed Trent Campus for two days it has been a very enjoyable period in the life of de Ferrers. I hope you have the opportunity for a well deserved extended break this summer. We look forward to a successful 2008/9. Universityfor Year 12!A group of Year 12students were invited toThe University ofManchester to attend aspecial AS conference onForeign Languages.

The day started with a pres-entation on the benefits ofstudying a foreign languagein today’s global world; thiswas followed by a series ofpractical workshops in Frenchfocussing on different skills. Our students were taught bysome of the university’s lec-turers and certainly enjoyedthe experience of working ona university campus!

The last workshop was dedi-cated to learning a new lan-guage, in our case Chinese, and this proved to be a realand certainly enjoyable chal-lenge.

The day ended with the uni-versity admission tutor lead-ing a plenary on how to writethe best personal statementwhen applying for university.

Our students enjoyed andbenefited greatly from thewhole experience.

The sky was cloudy butspirits were high as 26 stu-dents from de FerrersSpecialist TechnologyCollege travelled to RockleyWatersports at RockleyPoint in Poole. On arrival,we were warmly welcomedby friendly staff, followedby a tasty dinner. After a good night’s sleep (ornot!), we awoke to the thrill ofgoing in powerboats, myfavourite part of the trip.Roaring over the sea, weskimmed the tops of the waves, while we sat in the back shout-ing and laughing. Afterwardswe went on to do Pico sailing, which was challenging butgreat fun. That evening, rockclimbing, beach games and abarbecue were enjoyed by all.We got up the next day to go toPoole Park where we enjoyedkayaking and windsurfing.Unfortunately, most of usspent more time in the waterthan actually on the windsurf-ing board! During kayaking wedid a version of the Cha ChaSlide, where we all desperatelytried not to fall in the water!

On our last day we attemptedDragon Racing. Trying to stayin time, we paddled as hard aswe could to win one of themany races that took place. That afternoon, we all had a goat raft building, which some ofus did successfully, but othersended up capsizing!

de Ferrers 2Hollyoaks 4Sunday 15th June 2008, wasthe big day for the rematchbetween the de Ferrers stafffootball team and the famousHollyoaks! It was almosttwelve months to the daywhen the mighty Hollyoaksfootball team, who apparent-ly had never been beaten, wasthrashed by the de Ferrersstaff 5 – 0.This year was to be a differentstory altogether. De Ferrershad trained even harderthis year, arrangingfriendlies wherever pos-sible and putting inextra hours on the train-ing pitch. The newlyappointed Mr Hand, asteam coach, had a lot tolive up to, especiallyafter the great successof last year. There werenew signings and moredepth in the squad. Theteam was confident of aclass repeat performance of2007. The team talk was sharpand the tactics were set. Allthat was left to do was to goout and produce the goods.

2pm arrived. The crowd wasready, both teams were hun-gry, referee and linesmen wereall set to go. De Ferrers hadlost the toss and Hollyoaks hadopted to play against the windin the first half. The openingfifteen minutes were prettyeven, both teams having halfchances but neither convert-ing. The defence was solid andde Ferrers looked dangerous onthe break. It was noticeablefrom the kick off that this wasnot the same Hollyoaks sidethat was humiliated last year. The team looked fast andorganised, but de Ferrers wasmatching their every move. The staff defence were com-fortably handling the power ofthe Hollyoaks attack and thenit came; a 25 yard half volleyfrom ‘Calven’ screamed intothe roof of the de Ferrers net.1 – 0 Hollyoaks!

Heads went down as Calvenshowed off his acrobatics. DeFerrers needed something fastto bring things back to levelpar. Mr Birt was threateningconsistently down the leftwing peppering the Hollyoaksdefence. They had resorted tobringing him down on a num-ber of occasions and it wasfrom one of these occasions deFerrers found the breakthrough.

A free kick from the left flankwas curled deep into the boxby Mr Hand, and the defence

leapt but Mr Mitchell leapthigher, climbing above all andfiring a powerful header intothe far corner of the net 1 – 1.This was the break de Ferrershad been waiting for.Confidence and determina-tion seemed to double fromthe equalizer. Many chancesfollowed and all de Ferrers’way. Mr Goldstein was power-ing forward, Mr Pearce hadgone up a gear and Mr Brownwas seeing far more of theball but no one could capi-talise. Half time couldn’thave come at a better timefor Hollyoaks who were clear-ly on their back foot. Halftime -: de Ferrers 1 – 1Hollyoaks.

A number of changes weremade at half time and Mr Gradywas to step in as coach fromthe sideline for the secondhalf. Hollyoaks came out gunsblazing. They were pressingfrom the word go, but MrOrchard and Mr Campbell werehandling the pressuresuperbly. De Ferrers was now

relying on the counterattack, using MrPearce’s pace and MrRoberts’ height tohound the Hollyoaksdefence. Hollyoakswas coping well andseemed very relaxeddefending whenbeing chased downby the de Ferrersfront men. Fifteenminutes into thehalf, ‘persistentPearce’ got thebreak through deFerrers had been

waiting for. After nippingthe ball awayfrom theHollyoaks’right back, Mr Pearceaccelerated into the boxand was just about to pullthe trigger when he wasbrought down just insidethe penalty area. Appealscould be heard from milesaround and a huge cheer

erupted as the referee blew hiswhistle and pointed towardsthe penalty spot. Mr Handnervously stepped up andplaced the ball on the penaltyspot. The crowd went quiet

and the whistle blew. 2 – 1 deFerrers! After slotting the ballinto the bottom left hand cor-ner, dangerously close to theHollyoaks keeper, Mr Handreaped the rewards of MrPearce’s hard work and cele-brated with his joyful teammates at taking the lead. Alead that was short lived asHollyoaks seemed to, onceagain, go up a gear.

Less than ten minutes aftertaking lead, de Ferrers foundthemselves on level termsonce again after a wondergoal by ‘Justin’. 2 – 2!Changes were made to try andlift the tiring de Ferrers teambut nothing seemed to work asHollyoaks grew stronger andstronger. It was a mere for-mality when Hollyoaks tookthe lead with approx fifteenminutes remaining and then

capitalised on thislead with five min-utes to go. Chanceswere few and farbetween for the deFerrers staff in thesecond half and thescore line could havebeen considerablyworse as the whistlefinally blew for fulltime.

Hollyoaks celebrat-ed, but the de

Ferrers staff held their headshigh as they had given thebest fight they could. It was afantastic day and a pleasure tobe a part of. The de Ferrers‘Man of the Match’ award wasa close call between MrMitchell and Mr Orchard, butafter discussions within theteam, Mr Orchard was creditedas the ‘Man of the Match’! Welldone to all!!

Ground Force doesthe Chelsea FlowerShow at de Ferrers.Yes it certainly was a majorevent which took incredibleplanning but the outcomewas certainly worth it. Overthe three days, in extremesof weather, the Year 7 stu-dents, working with theirtutors and other staff, com-pleted a variety of taskswhich ultimately led to ourcreating a beautiful gardenon Dove Campus. Duringthe three days the studentseither worked in the Designand Technology workshopsmaking bird tables, plant

stands and planters withtrellis or actually on the gar-den.

Day 1 was spent clearing theland and moving some ofthe hedging to open up thespace. Two of the paths werealso completed. In the work-shops four of each of thestructure were completedand given their first coats ofpaint.

Day 2 started with moreground clearing and level-ling. The third path was alsolaid and fifty metres of logroll, which gave the gardenits structure, was put intothe ground. By the end ofthe college day we were

ready forplanting. Onceagain in theworkshops thestudents werebusily makingmore struc-tures. A teamof studentsBefore…

… and after

was also giving the prod-ucts second and third coatsof paint.Day 3 – let the transforma-tion finally happen. The daywas full of students pushingwheel barrows, digging, planting, naming andlabelling, shovelling, rakingand generally working veryhard. Alongside this was anumber of staff who wereworking on the pond areacreating some fencing tomake it a safer workingspace for the future. By theend of the three days twotons of gravel, three tons ofbark and four tons of topsoil had been moved. This project could not havebeen completed without thehelp, support and sponsor-ship from the following people:Mr Paul Steed and ParkRangers from ESBC;Miss Glenda Norton at B&QSupercentre Burton onTrent; A grant from “LivingProject”;Simon at WoodgrowHorticultural Ltd;Mr G Ingram at BretbyNurseries Ltd;Mr John O’Grady atGreenhouse 2000, FestivalPark, Stoke on Trent.

We are grateful for their contributions to this project.

The Championships- Wimbledon 2008Over the course of Wimbledon2008, 23rd June to 6th July, Irepresented Staffordshire StJohn Ambulance Youth byattending the event to do FirstAid cover from 23rd to 26thJune, along with cadets fromother counties of Kent andLondon District. This gave me a new a rewarding expe-rience of First Aid, which I wouldn’tusually see on local duties. Averagingout at a 13-hour day it is tiring butextremely satisfying with the opportu-nities to meet, as well as treat, peoplefrom all over the world. With such a wide variety of cadets andpersonalities this duty is a greatopportunity to meet new members andwork alongside people you wouldn’tusually meet.

The chance to see some tennis andmeet famous people is always up forgrabs, and I met Venus and SerenaWilliams.

Fingers were crossed for the weather,as we were hoping it wouldn’t rain;however, the heat contributed to anincreasing number of casualties, manysuffering from faints and heat exhaus-tion.

Wimbledon 2008 was a fun and excit-ing experience, which allowed me toimprove my skills and knowledge aswell as work alongside trained doctorswho were on standby to help if needbe - and in the process, have thefamous strawberries and cream forfree!

Following the normal Sixth Form Induction Day incollege on the 3rd July, eighty students boarded thebus for Wetton in the White Peak. The studentswere game for anything and everything! On arrivalat Wetton students pitched their own tents; specialmention must go to the small marquee that Tomand Andrew just about hadup by the time it wasdark… full marks foreffort, lads!!

After a BBQ and a quick lessonin trangia cooking, the studentsorganised possibly the biggestand longest football match thatWetton has ever seen. With allother campers joining in, therewere around one hundred play-ers all chasing the one ball…ataround 10.45pm the game hadto be abandoned due to poorlight!

Bright and early the following morning students cookedtheir own breakfast, which barely had chance to settle, whenthe orienteering began. The different coloured team t-shirtsclearly brought the groups closer together and really fired upa sense of competition. The independent adjudicators(Daniel Richins, Matthew Underwood and Lorna Hutton)were open to all evidence of cheating and deducted pointsaccordingly…we have much mobile phone footage of

Sixth Form Induction at Wetton!attempts to cheat the system!! Once all the check pointshad been found, the teams set about building a strawtower that had to hold a marble. The towers seemed toresemble more the leaning tower of Pisa than the EiffelTower but it certainly kept the ongoing competition alive! After the students had cooked their own lunch they set

about their last task whichwas to design a water rocket.A full scale assault was madeon the lunar project rivallinganything that NASA couldcome up with. The Wettoncamping field was turnedinto Cape Canaveral withlaunch speeches and the per-sonalisation of rockets ‘Thisis John’ and most imagina-tively ‘This is a rocket’. Jetpropulsion was taken to newheights using nothing morethan pop bottles, water, a cartyre valve, a foot pump andthe odd jelly baby!

A fantastic time was had by all and even Mr Galloway, whohas an aversion to camping, enjoyed himself! The weathercould not have been better although poor Mr Staples hasstill not quite returned to his normal colour! The studentswere a real credit to themselves and the college with localresidents and campers showing an interest in their activi-ties and commenting upon their excellent behaviour andteam work.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITIONYear 10 BTEC students and the KS3 Special Arts Club are currently undertaking the Sight Saversphotographic competition i Click. The theme is ‘The Senses’ and how we rely on them. Students have been taking studio shots and location shoots to fulfill the brief.

PSFASince our last update we have heldthree events:

A Bingo Evening was held on 6th March. This is always a popular event with agood atmosphere and a number of peo-ple walking out of the door clutchingtheir winnings or raffle prizes at the endof the evening.

This was quickly followed by the FamilyQuiz on 11th April which saw fourteenteams racking their brains to answersome quite tricky questions such as“Whose Turn At The Bar Is It?” and“Where Did My Sandwich Go?” Thanks toNeal Upchurch, our Quizmaster on thenight.

Disappointingly, the Family Disco andKaraoke on May 9th had to be cancelleddue to lack of interest – no budding JohnTravoltas out there then, though I sus-pect the school students were not thatkeen on seeing their mums and dadsstrutting their stuff! Never mind, itcould have been fun.

Also the Bingo scheduled to take placeon 22nd May had to be cancelled, purelybecause of a clash of room bookings andthe prior claim by examinations.

So all our efforts were then concentratedon the Hollyoaks Charity Football Matchwhich took place on Sunday 15th June. This was a repeat of last year’s eventwhen the de Ferrers’ staff team soundlythrashed Hollyoaks. However, revenge issweet as Hollyoaks was to prove thisyear. On a beautiful, sunny and breezyday over seven hundred people came towatch the grudge match or just to have acloser look at the Hollyoaks pinups in theflesh. A BBQ with burgers, sausages andtasty pork baps, soft drinks, teas andcoffees, some excellent raffle prizes, atombola and an inspired commentaryfrom Mr French all added to the enter-tainment for the day. The strip was verykindly sponsored by Chauvin Arnoux andthe men from Canon were around to takephotos and donate a prize inkjet printer.

After the match the Hollyoaks team lin-gered a while for more photo opportuni-ties and autograph hunting. The fantas-tic profit of £2,300 from the day will gotowards funding more school projectsand we have donated £300 to the AlderHey Hospital for Children in Liverpool asrequested by the Hollyoaks cast.

We feel very proud to be handing over acheque for £10,000 to the college, whichwill be used to kit out a fitness suite inthe new fabulous Sports Hall. The com-mittee has worked incredibly hard toraise this amount of money, but havehad a lot of fun along the way. We lookforward to seeing all the super fit stu-dents who will benefit from this fantasticsports facility.

The end of the Summer term and theschool year is drawing near but the PSFAis already drawing up plans for theAutumn term. Our Annual GeneralMeeting will be held on Monday 15thSeptember quickly followed on Friday26th September by a Family Quiz Night.Although I hate to mention it so early, our Christmas Fair has been booked forThursday 4th December. Put these datesin your diary right away – I know youwon’t want to miss them!

Have an excellent summer.

Pat Thorpe, Chairperson ofthe PSFA, and committeemembers presented acheque to the college for£10,000 towards equipmentfor the fitness suite in theSports Hall. The committeehas worked hard this yearwith various fund raisingevents to help raise thismoney. Thank you to allwho have helped towardsmaking this possible.

Thenational project, “PublishingHouse Me”, will be launched inOctober and the creator has toldus that a lot of the ideas fromthe de Ferrers site will be incor-porated in the final version.

Students on the register shouldhave received, or will shortlyreceive, a starter pack from YGT(Youth Gifted and Talented). Each member should registerwith the organisation to gainthe full benefits of being nomi-nated as gifted and talented. They will also receive a question-naire to fill in which will helpidentify how we can help devel-

op their skills further (half havebeen completed).

The new de Ferrers VLE page forGifted and Talented has beenintroduced to all G&T students inYears 7-11 and Year 12. The siteincludes useful weblinks; a newsnoticeboard of G&T activities;discussion forums to debateissues and to seek or offer helpwith homework and classworkand competitions and surveys.Ideally, we want the content onthe site to be controlled by thestudents so, ideas please……!

The next main update of the reg-ister will be post SAT and GCSEresults. Inevitably, some stu-dents will come off the list andothers will be added. Please dolet us know if you feel your child

should beconsideredfor the reg-ister.

We are inthe processof meetingwith all stu-dents to dis-cuss theirindividualrequire-ments – thiswill obvious-ly take sometime so ifyou want tocall, email ormeet in thefirst coupleof months ofthe new aca-demic year, please docontact us.
