Chennai faces a unique pollutionchallenge – pollution levels that appearto be low or moderate, but are not so.

Actual impacts can be much more severe – says CSEanalysis

· Unlike other mega cities, Chennai represents adifferent pollution challenge. Its annual averagepollution levels — though lower than other mega cities— still vary between moderate to critical. Without the seabreeze in this coastal city, the peaks could have beenworse· Analysis by CSE exposes steady and rapidincrease in pollution levels, high local impacts and hightraces of toxics making its air dangerous to breathe· Despite having better multi-modal publictransport compared to many other mega cities, motorization rate is high. If two-wheelers are added thenits personal motorization rate exceeds that of Westerncities· CSE’s assessment shows how car-centricinfrastructure – flyovers, signal-free roads, footoverbridges – are converting zero emissions walk trips tolong motorized trips adding enormously to pollution· Over the last two decades, share of bus and trainridership has dropped drastically. The share of personalvehicle trips has increased · Chennai needs to quickly scale up publictransport, integrated multi-modal transport options, carrestraint policies and walking for clean air

Vehicles are a special problem

• High exposure to vehicular fumes: Vehicles pose aspecial challenge. In terms of actual exposure, people aremore vulnerable to vehicular fumes while traveling and inclose proximity to roads. Pollution concentration in ourbreath is 3-4 times higher than the ambient airconcentration. In densely-populated cities, more than 50-60 per cent of the population lives or works near theroadside where levels are much higher. This is veryserious in low income neighbourhoods located close toroads. Road users, public transport users, walkers andcyclists are the most exposed groups – they are also theurban majority.

• Vehicles contribute hugely to air pollution: Sourceapportionment studies carried out in Chennai by MadrasIIT under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment andForests show vehicles contribute 14 per cent ofparticulate matter and 68 per cent of nitrogen oxides. Some other studies show that 35 per cent of PM2.5 inChennai comes from vehicles — tinier the particles higherthe share of vehicles.

• Chennai records very high exposure to vehicularpollution: A study carried out by scientists of Universityof Berkeley published in Environmental Science andTechnology in 2012 shows that the exposure to vehicularfumes (in terms of population-weighted intake fraction, orthe grams of vehicle pollution inhaled per grams of vehiclepollution emitted) in Chennai (72) is one of the highest incities studied in India – third after Kolkata (150) and Delhi(100).

Eye Care for ChildrenDr Lipika Roy, MS (Ophthal) internationally trained Eye Specialisthas put together the most common queries asked by parentsabout your children’s vision problems

Everyone has a vision of what children’s eye problems look like:Squinting, sitting too close to the television, rubbing their eyes.

Though those can be symptoms of vision issues, sometimesthere are no signs your child isn’t seeing well. Here’s what towatch out for and what to do about it.

How does a child’s vision develop? In the first few months of life, infants can only see clearly objectsthat are 8 to 10 inches from their face. It isn’t until 12 to 16 weeksthat their eyesight begins improving, and they start seeing thingsmore clearly and further away.

Over the next year, kids then develop depth perception, eye-bodycoordination, eye-hand coordination, and the ability to judgedistances. It’s rare for children to have vision problems at thisage.

When you should schedule my child’s first eye exam?Eye exams for children are extremely important, because 5 to 10percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of school-aged childrenhave vision problems. Early identification of a child’s visionproblem can be crucial because children often are moreresponsive to treatment when problems are diagnosed earlyAccording to American Eye Doctors association, the infants shouldhave their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age.Children then should have additional eye exams at age 3, and justbefore they enter the first grade — at about age 5 or 6. If the childhas been prescribed glasses 6 monthly check-up is mandatory.

What are the Common Vision Problems in Children?Vision problems in kids tend to emerge between 18 months and4 years old. The most common eye problems are:

Refractive Errors (Myopia- Near Sightedness, Hypermetropia- FarSightedness, Astigmatism)This is probably the most common eye problem and can at timesgo undetected in the early stages hence it is important that regularscreening is done. The amount of the error is first determinedafter a detailed examination and is usually treated with glasseswhich require regular evaluation.

Uneven focus(Amblyopia), where one eye is more farsighted thanthe other, affects 2% to 3% of kids. This vision problem is thehardest to detect, because young children don’t know their visionis compromised, so they won’t say anything about it hence therequirement for vision screening. A child’s stronger eye — the onethat sees further, or focuses better — slowly becomes theirdominant eye. The brain starts ignoring the images coming fromthe weaker eye, and stops developing the nerve connectionsleading to it. The compromised vision in that weaker eye, calledamblyopia or lazy eye, doesn’t have to happen. It can be stoppedand reversed, but it needs to be caught early with a visionscreening.

A crossed or wandering eye (Squint), which troubles 3% to 5% ofchildren. Symptoms include an eye that drifts or appears crossedin respect to the other eye,

After detailed examinations the cause is determined and thentreated with special glasses or at times surgery.

What are some common signs that I need to Consultant anEye Doctor?

Most of the time, vision problems aren’t obvious, and the bestway to catch issues early is through vision screenings.Sometimes, though, there are symptoms of eye problemssuch as infection, cataracts, or other issues. Warning signsmay include:

Eye rubbing, Tearing, Swelling, Redness, Discharge, Crust,Sensitivity to light, Droopy eyelids, White, yellow, or gray-whitematerial in the pupil

If your child has any of these symptoms, or their eyes changein any way, or you’re worried about their vision, don’t wait untilthey’re 3 years old to get that first vision tested. If you have aconcern, it’s always better to be on the safe side.

Beauty Tips and Diet......

Bridal-MakeupTipsWhat bride doesn’twant to look simplyfabulous on her bigday? Make sure yourwedding-day makeupis the best it can bewith thesesuggestions fromwedding makeup proStacey Lyn Weinstein.

It’s your wedding day— one of the mostlife-changing,unforgettable days ofyour life! This eventwon’t only live on inyour memory, it willalso be capturedforever in photos andlikely on video, solooking your very bestshould be a top

priority. And that starts with your bridal makeup. Here, weddingmakeup expert Stacey Lyn Weinstein, owner of New York City-basedsalon Once Upon a Bride, reveals the makeup tips you’ll need to be atruly beautiful bride.

First and Foremost: Be YourselfA mistake many brides make for their wedding day is heading in adramatically different direction from their normal special-occasionlook. It’s better to start with a makeup style you know you’ll feelconfident in, saysWeinstein. Then you can play with variations at yourmakeup trial runs (yes, you do need practice runs!) to up the glamfactor a bit. And there’s a difference between upping the glam factor abit and going overboard — piling on makeup is never the answer.Don’t think you have to overcompensate. It’s your photographer’s jobto catch you at your best angle and in the best light possible. So lethim or her focus on that.

Going With a ProWhen searching for a wedding-makeup expert, you shouldexperience at least two different practice runs before choosing theartist you absolutely LOVE. It’s a good idea to make the most out ofyour practice runs. That is, wear a favorite dress to each trial run, then go to dinner afterward with your fiancé or maid of honor (and be

sure to check yourself in the bathroom light). If you still loveyour makeup when you get home that night, then it’s thewinning wedding-day look!

Airbrush Foundation vs. Traditional FoundationFor summer brides worried about their makeup coming off, airbrush foundation (available in select salons) is the perfectoption. It’s sheer and light, but because it’s made withsilicone it won’t budge. It also provides great coverage forwomen with skin blemishes or uneven skin tone. Weinsteinuses traditional liquid or cream foundation only as thefinishing touch. It’s important not to apply so muchfoundation that it cakes or looks overdone, she says.

DIY MakeupIf you’re doing your own wedding makeup, don’t stress!Weinstein offers a few pointers that will help you avoid anybridal-makeup blunders.

Tried and True Cover-ups — When it comes to concealer,Weinstein applies it over foundation (rather than under) forbetter coverage. She swears by Stila’s Cover-up Stick to hideblemishes and uses Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Éclat fordark circles and to brighten the area under the eyes.Eye Shadow Tips — The type of eye shadow you usedepends on the season. Weinstein says cream shadow isideal for summer brides wanting a dewy, youthful look.Regular eye shadows work best for a fall or winter weddingwhen deep, rich colors are most appropriate.Mind Your Mascara — A waterproof formula a must! Youdon’t want your tears of joy ruining your bridal makeup. Justbe sure to have eye makeup remover on hand after thewedding — waterproof mascara can be tough to remove.Another tip: If you have dark under-eye circles, don’t applymascara on your bottom lashes. This keeps the focus upand prevents mascara from flaking off and causing moredarkness beneath the eyes.A Blushing Bride — Cream blushes are great because theycan also be used on your eyes. During the summer months, you can start by applying bronzer on your face and peachyblush tones just on the apple of your cheeks. In the coldermonths, you can still apply a bronzer, then a deeper-huedblush over cheeks.Long-lasting Lip Color — To help your lip color last throughthe reception, use a lip stain with a gloss over it. Glossesare especially beautiful in the summertime; lipstick is best inthe winter.

Now you should be ready to walk down the aisle looking asbeautiful as you’ll no doubt feel after your hubby-to-be takeshis first glance at his beloved bride!

You need not drink buttermilk to reap its benefits. External use of buttermilk workswonders as well.

Buttermilk is a natural pro-biotic and is rich in lactic acid. These are theimportant ingredients in most of the expensive beauty products.

Experts claim that this is one of the best peels for softening, brightening andexfoliating skin.

Because of its highly acidic and astringent nature, it treats age spots, frecklesand even tightens skin.

You may try a combination of buttermilk, honey and egg white and massageyour body with this mixture.

It will not only rid you off the stubborn sun tan, but will also give your skin aradiant glow. You can also apply pure buttermilk on your face, leave it on and wash offbefore going to bed.

You may also use buttermilk as a hair mask. Blend 1 banana, 2 tablespoon ofhoney and one cup of buttermilk and apply the mixture to your hair and leave it for 45minutes before washing it off.

Miracles of Sai Baba

Baba’s Leelas (Miracles)Lighting lamps with waterLong before Sai Baba’s fame spread, he was fond of burninglights in his Masjid and other Temples. But for the oil needed inthose little earthenware lights that he lit, he depended on thegenerosity of the grocers of Shirdi. He had made it a rule tolight earthenware lamps in the masjid every evening and hewould call on the grocers for small donations. But there came atime when the grocers got tired of giving oil free to Sai Babaand one day they bluntly refused to oblige him, saying theyhad no fresh stocks. Without a word of protest Sai Babareturned to the masjid. Into those earthenware lamps he pouredwater and lighted the wicks. The lamps continued to burn deepinto the midnight. The matter came to the notice of the grocerswho now came to Sai Baba with profuse apologies. Wouldn’tSai Baba kindly pardon them? Sai Baba pardoned them, but hewarned them never to lie again. “You could have refused to giveme the oil, but did you have to say that you didn’t have freshstocks?” he admonished them. But he had made his pointStopping the rainThere is the story of one Rao Bahadur Moreshwar Fradhan whohad come to Shirdi to take Sai Baba’s darshan along with hiswife. As the couple were about to leave, it began to rain heavily.Thunder and lightning rent the air. As the Pradhan couplelooked round in dismay, Sai Baba prayed. “Oh Allah!” heintoned, “let the rains cease. My children are going home. Letthem go peacefully!” The storm thereupon ceased, thedownpour reduced to slight drizzle and the Pradhans were ableto reach their destination safely.Raising the water level in wellWhen Sai Baba first came to Shirdi it had of no basic facilities. There was a well put only in name. It had no natural springwater and if ever there had been one, it must long ago havedried up. Water had to be fetched from a distance. When, therefore, Sai Baba gave his permission to the villagers tocelebrate the Ram Navami Fair, (Baba’s Birthday) the bigproblem facing the organizers was one of water supply. SoWhat should they do but go to Sai Baba with their problem?“‘Oh yes,” said Sai Baba, ‘so you want plenty of water, do you?

The villagers of Shirdi and a farsoon found out that this was noordinary fakir but an avatar(incarnation) of a very highorder. He demonstrated throughhis miracles and utterances, the purpose and intention forwhich he had come. He wouldoften say, “My Leela isinscrutable”. To each one hemet, he imparted knowledgeaccording to the capacity of therecipient to absorb it. Baba’sLeela’s (miracles) were plentyand varied, and we recount justa few which occurred during andafter his lifetime.

Here, take this and drop it in the well and wait and see.”“‘This,” turned up to be a platter of flowers on which someprasad (blessed food) had been placed along with theremnants of alms Baba had received earlier in the day. Thevillagers had no qualms about doing as they were did. Theirfaith in Sai Baba was total. No sooner had that platter ofleaves been dropped in the well, it is said, water rose fromthe bottom as if by divine command and completely filled it.And great was the rejoicing of the people.Saving a child from drowningOne report has it that word had spread that the 3-year olddaughter of a poor man called Babu Kirwandikar had falleninto the well and had been drowned. When the villagersrushed to the well they saw the child suspended in mid-airas if some invisible hand was holding her up! She wasquickly pulled out. Sai Baba was fond of that child who wasoften heard to say : I am Baba’s sister!” After this incident, the villagers took her at her word. “it is all Baba’s Leela”, thepeople would say philosophically. They could offer no otherexplanation.Flow of Godavari (river) from Baba’s feetThese were instances of things they had seen with theirown eyes. It was not secondhand information they hadgathered. Sai Baba was to them as real as their homes andtheir fields and their cattle and the distant hills.Das Ganuonce had an unforgettable experience. On a festiveoccasion, he sought Baba’s permission to go to a placecalled Singba on the banks of the Godavari to have a bath inthe holy waters. “No,” Baba replied resolutely, “where is theneed to go all the way when the Godavari is here right at myfeet?” Das Ganu was vexed. He was willing to concede thatGanga the holy river (Baba frequently referred to Godavarias Ganga) rose from the feet of Sri Narayana (one amongthe Hindu trinity of Gods) himself, but his faith was not deepenough to believe that the waters of the Godavari couldspring form the feet of his master, Sri Sai. Baba who wasreading Das Ganu’s mind decided that this was the time tostrengthen Das Ganu’s faith. He told his devotee: “comecloser to me and hold the hollow of your palms at my feet!”.As soon as he did so water flowed freely out of the toes ofthe master’s feet and filled the hollow of Das Ganu’s palmsin no time. His joy knew no limits. He sprinkled the wateron his head and his body and distributed some more amongthe assembled devotees as tirtha (holy water).

Why We Shout In Anger” ~A short story on Relationships

A Hindu saint who was visiting river Ganges to take bath found a group offamily members on the banks, shouting in anger at each other. He turnedto his disciples smiled ‘n asked. ‘Why do people shout in anger shout ateach other?’

Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, ‘Because we lose ourcalm, we shout.’ ‘But, why should you shout when the other person is justnext to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a softmanner.’ asked the saint.

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the otherdisciples.

Finally the saint explained, . ‘When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to beable to hear each other.

The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear eachother to cover that great distance.

What happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at eachother but talk softly, Because their hearts are very close. The distancebetween them is either nonexistent or very small…’ The saint continued,‘When they love each other even more, what happens? They do notspeak, only whisper ‘n they get even closer to each other in their love. Finally they even need not whisper, they onlylook at each other ‘n that’s all. That is howclose two people are when they love eachother.’

He looked at his disciples ‘n said. ‘So whenyou argue do not let your hearts get distant,Do not say words that distance each othermore, Or else there will come a day whenthe distance is so great that you will not findthe path to return.’
